This place did not give the caffeine fix. I ordered the iced ceremonial matcha latte, sweetened with brown sugar. I saw them whisk it in the bowl, but it just tasted like I paid $6.50 for regular milk. Unfortunately I knew before I even tried it was not going to be good, due to the color of the drink. It was barely green. I like a strong match with that richer green color. My partner ordered the Honey Cinnamon latte. This one wasn't bad, but it was also weak in coffee flavor. It was basically a honey-cinnamon milk, with a splash of coffee. Overall, the flavors/sweetness arent bad, but that's not what we came for. Also, a bit nit-picky of an observation... the lids were not comfortable to drink from. It was just an awkward angle. Disappointing experience, I'm so sad to say I would not recommend this to friends or anyone looking for coffee in the area, as I would love to support the smaller businesses in the Carmel Mountain area. read more

I work in the area and come here often but I've been out of the country the last two months and just came back so excited for a croissant and I have no idea what happened but they're not the same :( seems like the shop has decided to start buying in bulk from a cheaper distributer or something because the baked goods used to be amazing it's why I kept going back and now they taste like something I would get at the gas station for the same price. Hate to say this, because I love the coffee. However, the service and staff need to get it together, I am not sure why I always run into an issue here. One time I ordered for pick up and the place wasn't closed there was just no one working.... there is always this girl that goes to the back when there's a line. No one answers the phones. I don't know but these are some of the laziest baristas I've ever dealt with and that is like every single time I go. Please improve your service and hospitality. James Coffee Co has been around in San Diego for at least a decade now or so I believe. Happy to see this location opened up a couple of blocks away from my house. I can easily take a ten minute walk or less to get here. Parking is great! Very prime location that they chose. This was my first time trying their iced matcha. I ordered an ice strawberry matcha and although it wasn't on their menu, I asked the nice gentleman to make me one and he happily did. I ordered mine with almond milk. My mom got a regular matcha with a touch of vanilla sweetener. Service was prompt and the person working today was so friendly! They do serve ceremonial matcha which is GREAT. I do have to say though that our drinks tasted a bit watered down. I'm used to stronger matcha and this order disappointed me. Hence, I did have to give this 4 stars instead of 5. Inside this location, they had their usual James Coffee branding on the walls, merchandise, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating! I'll return to try their coffee drinks. I did not know that there was a Jame's Coffee in North County, San Diego. I was happy to find them while I was in the area. I picked up a cortado and a gluten-free pumpkin muffin while I was here. The cortado was well made. It was smooth and rich in coffee flavor. I was very pleased that they served in the proper gibraltar glass. The pumpkin muffin was excellent. It offered a great soft texture and nice pumpkin flavor and a subtle spice flavor. The service at the counter was very friendly. When I arrived, there were several tables that had debris from previous visitors, but they quickly cleaned the tables after I mentioned it. There's a very good amount of parking at this location. Second attempt to love the place but find it to be just plain okay. First try- the Rancher. I asked for more cold brew because it tasted water down. Barista was not happy about that, as she poured a few drops of the concentrate without any word. Second try - cold brew with pumpkin cold foam. Friend and I stopped in, the service was amazing!! The young girl working was so sweet and helpful. Coffee came out quick and was made really well- the worker was able to adjust the sweetness of my coffee and make my order to my preference the first time, which was amazing. Wanted to try this new coffee place. First visit I got an iced americano. It was good and made me crack another visit. I saw someone with a cold brew with coconut milk (I asked him what he ordered) that looked refreshing as well. I agree that the wait time for what I ordered seemed long. I think this is on account of there only being 2 people up front working. Even without a long line it took at least 10 minutes for my drink. This is a Saturday morning around 9:30am. I went again today and decided to try the cold brew and an iced black tea. The cold brew was good and I would get it again. The ice black tea wasn't really dark or strong (or seemed black) and lacked flavor. I wouldn't get it again. I decided to add a growler to my order so I could take cold brew home. I'll be back. Got a decaf espresso and a strawberry cheesecake. The two star is from the TERRIBLE wifi. I don't go out midday for coffee much but I had a goal to sit down and just trail blaze through things and wasn't able to. It seemed like the baristas were spending a bit too much time chatting with customers, which slowed things down, even as the line kept growing. The service really was impeccable here the last couple times that I've been here. I really love the coffee soda, seasonal mango version too! I also think that they have one of the best matchas in San Diego, iced or hot. They roast their own coffee beans too, the white owl blend in the white bag is my current favorite. It has notes of berry, vanilla, and cocoa. They also have really good baked goods and pasties. I especially like their jalapeño cheese bagels, savory ham & cheese bear claws, chocolate croissant, and avocado toast. I hope that they bring back their seasonal quiches. I had one of the loveliest decaf lattes I ever had. Very smooth. No weird aftertastes. I noticed a nice assortment of pastries for sale, as well as a nice selection of beans for sale. Walked in, I immediately noticed that the place was clean and music was great. Staff appeared friendly; they greeted me and were patient as I explored their drink choices. I landed on a hot honey cinnamon latte. The barista placed the loveliest design in the milk foam. I took a sip....delicious! The honey and cinnamon paired really well together. Such a nice Fall combo! The espresso was solid, smooth. No acidic aftertaste. I see there are some negative reviews left here. It's a shame really. I can't vouch for all the reasons why and perhaps many are valid.... But I had no complaints with my drink or my first visit and plan to be back to support a local coffee shop soon. read more

I ordered an iced non fat latte and the cashier said we don't have nonfat milk which is odd considering they have multiple nondairy milk options. She then proceeds to say we like to focus on the taste of our coffee as the reason. Excuse me what?!? Number one that is the most pretentious hipster coffee shop thing to say and to use that as an excuse for nonfat milk is really stupid since it doesn't taste like anything. Go work in North Park or somewhere that people will be impressed with an answer like that. You're in a dead strip mall in CMR serving retirees and families get over yourselves. read more

I have passed by James Coffee on my walks and Sunday decided to finally stop by and check it out. I got the famous vanilla latte iced and my husband got an iced Americano. He liked the Americano ok, he said it was good but he is not as picky about his coffee as I am. I was super excited to see the vanilla was house made and had high hopes for a rich, flavorful drink. The espresso was good, they do not have nonfat milk so I got oat milk (upcharge). The latte didn't have much flavor, the vanilla was not very prominent and not sure what kind of oat milk they use but it wasn't very creamy. The coffee ran almost $7 and had quite a bit of ice and the drink was ok but more watered down tasting than I am used to with other vanilla lattes. It was busy and the staff was working hard, they were nice but not smiling. Plenty of seating inside and out and the store has a fairly modern aspect to it. Next time I am on a walk that way I will probably swing by and get an Americano and give them another try. read more

Please for the love of God don't go here. This was the absolute worst coffee I have ever had in my life. I got an iced vanilla latte, how can you mess that up? I took 4 sips to be sure I was as disgusted as I was by the first sip. Threw my entire coffee away, it tasted like soap and rubber. I've tried a lot of different coffee places and was excited to try a new one (James) and it was AWFUL.
