This dentist was a total waste of time and money. My very best friend recommended him ( I should've known something was wrong with his work when even after six years my friend's teeth were still crooked) so I booked an appointment because I wanted some bonding done on my teeth. Let me first say that based on my last visit (2007) I wanted to give them a lower rating, but Dr. Pasternak's professionalism, manner and initial first impression on my first visit warranted the extra star. My first visit to their office had a kindly gentleman greet me, hand me my paperwork and even answer a couple of phone calls. I didn't know he was the dentist until I went back to the cleaning chair and here he comes to clean my teeth and examine me...Dr. Pasternak himself! What a hands on dentist! He was friendly, and professional and gave me the old school doctor feeling....you know, the kind of jolly doctor that would make housecalls and give you a lollipop when your appointment was over. My insurance didn't cover this dentist, but since I only needed to come 2x a year for a cleaning, I didn't balk at the prices even though they were pretty high-$85 for a standard cleaning. On my last visit in 2007 I was told that I needed to get a recent set of xrays. The office manager didn't tell me there was going to be a cost involved, and no one brought me a quote or mentioned anything about cost, so I assumed it was a standard thing and that it would be covered in the cleaning appointment cost I knew I was going to have to pay. Imagine my shock when I finish and go to pay the $85 and my bill is $250. WHAT????!!!! Are you joking? The office manager woman didn't apologize or anything but just said, "yeah you had xrays and they are x amount". I was so heated and said, "well why didn't you tell me or give me a quote so I could have the option NOT to have xrays??" She had no reply. I mean come on! It's like if you went to a restaurant and you ordered a burger and the waitress asks if you want a bun and you roll your eyes and say yes and then you find out later that the bun is extra. Not cool. They wouldn't lower the price or waive it or offer any apology or admit their shady business practices. So I paid, left and never went back. The moral of the story: Dr. Pasternak is a nice and competent dentist, but the billing/office practices leave MUCH to be desired. read more

My sister and I have been going to Dr. Pasternak's office since the beginning of us visiting the dentist. I remember we would get very excited because we knew that at the end of our visit my sister and I would be invited to choose a prize from his treasure box. Still going there today that treasure box definitely looks smaller than I remember, but his staff, care and office are definitely still the same. Awesome. My mom has also had a lot of work done at his office since before she started taking us there. I am an adult now and have a child of my own and she has been a patient of his on and off since she was little. She is now almost 14. Taking a young child to the dentist for the first time can set the way they feel about going for the rest of their childhood. It can also extend into their teenage and adult years of their lives. Dr Pasternak had my daughter convinced that she liked going, wasn't scared and he we even funny to her. That really means a lot to a then first time mom. Going there today, getting scheduled for an emergency crown unexpectedly was still the same as I can remember. Awesome. Along side Dr Pasternak is his faithful dental assistance, office manager extraordinar. Diane. She arranged with my mom to fit me in right after my root canal appointment so I didn't have to miss anymore work than needed. I couldn't feel happier with my experience today as well as my life long experience going there since my childhood. I have been going to James Pasternak, DDS for a while and I have always had superior service here. I feel sometimes dentists shortcut treatments or services because we don't like to go but Dr. Pasternak is an honorable dentist and I like that. I really like the staff and the dental hygenist since going here I have had minimal problems with my teeth. I also decided to get Invisalign here and it has been the best choice I have made for myself. My teeth look great and I feel like I am taking good care of myself. I wish I did the Invisalign a long time ago when it was recommended however I am glad I did it now. Insurance fraud! and liars! I went to this place for a regular teeth cleaning. I chose this place because it was close to home at the time. I regularly see the dentist and have healthy gums and teeth. This practice charged me for a full mouth debridement that was $400 out of pocket. When I was getting my teeth cleaned I was assured it was a regular teeth cleaning. When I tired to deny the work done by this practice with my insurance stating they did not do a full mouth debridement on me because I did not authorize for them to do that on me, nor did I need it done and I was assured that it was a regular teeth cleaning. This practice fought my insurance and me stating they did do a full mouth debridement. And the lady who worked there would call me in the rudest manor stating that I owed them the money and that they will ruin my credit if I do not pay them the money. My best advice to anyone thinking of going here is don't, but if you don't have a choice make sure you see what they are billing you for before they start working on your teeth. read more

With a heavy heart, I have to write an overdue review of Dr. Pasternak. I had been going to Dr. Pasternak for 20 plus years, started going when I was 18. I loved his cheeriness and shortly after my wife and children would see him for years until they were grown. Everything seemed to be fine until what I can only describe as personal event in his life that he lost his bedside manner and possibly more, and became greedy. He fired his entire staff and I mean his entire staff from the day he opened his doors, not just office but his nurses and hygienist!! Then his billing got unethical and he seemed to be extremely money hungry and seriously grumpy. Wanting to do an extremely expensive deep cleaning $5,000 which I was to find out later I never needed! When I found his office after the big staff change had changed their billing practices to and came to find it was Dr. Pasternak was A-Ok with it. We had a great insurance but we were being charged for the full amount of the procedures out the door. I was like aren't you being paid for all or at least a large portion of the service today? They said they had to bill the insurance and would send the difference back to me or credit my account. The first time I was oh ok, I trusted the Dr. Then I never received a refund for the money I paid, and there were back to back procedures that I paid fully up front and never received a refund, always being to told the insurance will pay soon. I spoke to Dr. Pasternak about the insurance billing problem and he turned like Dr. Jekyll and Hyde!! He was yelling for absolutely no reason than that this long time customer was pointing out a big problem of not being refunded my over payments, I was floored! This was not the same man I had seen since I was a young man and felt complete trust with. I was then to find out all the money the issuance said I was to pay him and what they paid when the statements came in and I wanted my money back and he wouldn't give it, yelling nonsense about I'm the dentist and I need to be paid! I gave him the full amount for the whole procedure and then he got paid 85% of the full price of the procedures again from the insurance company!!! He got paid almost double for that it cost! And he is yelling at me?!! He called my wife out of the blue and said I am not welcome back to his office and that he would still see her, and my wife said you are saying he is not welcome because he is telling you there is a fraud on us and the insurance? She said not thank you and we went to see another dentist that was referred to us and our family is very happy, except for two last digs, when the new dentist asked for a copy of our file Dr. Pasternak refused!!! The new dentist was shocked by the behavior of Dr. Pasternak. AND ... I never needed that deep cleaning for $5,000! I never had it done thank god, that would have also been a big waist of money. Also, I read in another review on this thread that he made wrongful jokes that leaned on inappropriate and I can see that 100%. He would pass the time while you are in the chair and he had thousands of jokes he would tell. I could say there were many he told me that were very inappropriate looking back, but hay I thought the world of the guy and we were both guys. So to you Dr. Pasternak I don't know what happened to to you that caused a huge shift in your personality and your unethical need for money but I would say I hope you have gotten counseling for it and that the old you has returned! Whatever caused the loss of your true self I hope you find your place back to peace. I am sure we are not the only patients that have left you or were asked to leave, but I hope you make amends for your not you behavior to clean your karma. Say sorry to your faithful patients and pay the money back you owe, and you know it. read more

I do not recommend this dentist. After he "Fixed" my tooth it broke a few days later. I mean the whole side fell off and went in my gums, and YES it hurt very bad. Jesus now I have to get a root canal. He also got me for the $250 X-rays. If you are searching for a dentist Right now, keep searching. You will regret going here. read more

I found Dr. Pasternak a few months ago through my insurance company, By far this is the best Dentist office in the Valley. His staff is by far the best staff I have ever encountered as a patient. Dr. Pasternak has truly one of the best teams, they are so caring and willing to work with you. His personality is rare for a dentist (which is a good thing!!) and I am pretty sure they are now stuck with me as a patient as long as Dr. Pasternak is working. I recommend him as much as I can because I never had a Dentist who actually cares enough and will go over and beyond for his patients. Considering that I had been a patient of Dr. Pasternak's for about 15-20 years starting as a child well into my adult years...I have had plenty of experience's with him and the office. I have to say that Dr. Pasternak in general was a great dentist. Every time I left I felt like my teeth were in good shape. That said, as I got older and had to pay the bills for myself, I realized that his prices were quite a bit higher than any other office that I had called around to and am now going to. In the last couple years of going there, his office staff was terrible to say the least when it came to asking for a quote on services. The last bit of work I had done there was to have some fillings replaced and I had asked the staff to provide me with how much they would cost me out of pocket. I was given one price which was no where near what they ended up costing me. When I asked about it, they simply said, well we had no idea what he (Pasternak) was going to do. A few of these fillings have had to be taken out and refilled by my current dentist after he took some x-rays and saw some problems with the work that was done. There was a point where staff was fairly stable but it seems like this had changed as well and every time I would go in everyone would be new and aside from the quick examination I would get from the Doctor I could have been in any dental office. read more

This is my 5th visit to their offices and every time I am reassured that I've made a great decision of switching from another dentist. I found out about this office when I had a dental emergency and my dentist was closed on Thursdays (?!). So, I called Dr. Pasternak and he just said: "when can you come over?". Needless to say that I was very happy with the outcome and Dr. Pasternak's caring follow-ups. Luckily for me they take my insurance. Anyhow, they delivered. They are a true 5 star facility. The newest equipment. Researched methods. Individualized personal service. OK... this dental practice is AWESOME. I was visiting Chatsworth on business and unfortunately my crown fell off on the plane on the way from Boston. I called Dr Pasternak's office and the said... "come right over, we'll take care of it right away" . They did, and their charges were reasonable. Not many dentists would see someone on an emergency basis immediately. I have no dental insurance and my concern was high cost, but I asked Dr. Pasternak's front desk staff in advance what it would entail and they quoted a very reasonable and affordable price. Both my mother and grandmother love this doctor and his staff and I decided to give it a try: just had my first cleaning today and was very satisfied with the level of service, cleaniness, friendly staff and especially very gentle and detail-oriented hygienist, Laura. As my teeth are very sensitive I was worried about the pain but when she started working I relaxed completely as Laura was sooo gentle! They have created a comfortable, friendly environment meant to relax the most timid patient. Dr. Pasternak and the back office staff will make sure that you are comfortable while working on you and if you feel the slightest twing out comes the pain relief. Several years ago, I had to find another dentist as my work insurance changed. Believe me when I say that I did not want to leave my wonderful dentist. I went to this horrible place that destroyed my oral health with lousy cleanings. Then, I had a couple of teeth loosen and endured months of agony and discomfort while they pulled teeth, filed them down, and put in a bridge. I finally got fed up and paid the extra money to go back to Dr. P. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!! And, I was welcomed back like an old friend. Dr. P. has done everything he can to keep my teeth in my mouth, not just yank them out. Laura takes special care when cleaning. She is very professional and highly educated. Laura has answered all my questions about cleaning and oral health care. When I came back, my mouth was in bad shape. Now I'm doing great. Also, I've never had any problems with billing. People really need to educate themselves on medical expenses. The cost of seeing doctors can be very high, but the cost of poor health is higher. I know, i lived it. And, who doesn't know that X-rays cost extra? If you don't have insurance, EVERYTHING costs extra. Don't blame it on the doctor. Blame yourself for ignorance. Lee and the front office staff will quote prices. They will check with your insurance company before work is done. These people are not out to "get you". They are out to help you have a successful experience. Anyone looking at getting major dental work done should get a quote. Anyone without insurance should get a quote. He was understanding of my financial situation and lack of insurance coverage and was able to temporarily fix the tooth until my PPO insurance kicks in. Genetically cursed with teeth like those of a crack whore, but blessed with great insurance, I can go anywhere I want for dental care. I choose to go here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, they always tell me before each procedure what my out-of-pocket costs (if any) will be after insurance ded/copays. The office is clean, and I'm never kept waiting. Dr. Pasternak does it all, from general, to cosmetic, root canals to veneers, I've had it all done here. Oh, and get this, even though many of my procedures were pretty intense, I can honestly say, I never felt a thing. My husband and I have been seeing Dr. Pasternak since 1987. Both our kids (who are teenagers now) had their first dentist exam with Dr. Pasternak and we all visit for cleanings regularly. Dr. Pasternak is a hands-on, friendly, and competent dentist. The staff is always friendly and helpful, even going the extra mile to help me clear up insurance issues. About ten years ago, my insurance changed and Dr. Pasternak was no longer on the preferred provider list. I thought I would try to save money and switch dentists. It took only one visit to realize the difference in professionalism and competence. I very quickly switched back. After that experience, I had no problem paying the additional amount that my insurance did not cover. We love Dr. Pasternak and the personal phone calls he makes the night you have major work done. Worst dentist EVER! He put 2 crowns on my teeth which later eded up root canaled and one extracted.My new. Dentist took photos to show what a horrible job was done and rec me to SUE him! He also filed to much off my lower teeth for invisalign which I have written statements from 2 Orthodontist! Which he is NOT...BEWARE!! Our previous dentist dropped Delta Dental and we had to find a new dental practice. After reading the reviews and filtering out the noise, we signed up as new patients. Dr. Pasternak's office is nearby and convenient. We were welcomed by Kim and Lee who were both very accommodating and helpful, not to mention cheery and very positive. Laura, the hygienist, has a very soft but efficient touch. The dental assistants were very professional. More importantly, Dr. Pasternak made me feel like we have been his patients for a long time. He's very knowledgable about a variety of subjects - helpful in keeping patients entertained during procedures - and very detail oriented in the performance of his work. In addition, part of the paperwork included a patient partnership contract. Rarely do you see practitioners signing a covenant regarding the services rendered. We hope to be patients as a family for a long time. read more

Unethical business practices. Fraud. Liars. I went to Dr. Pasternak to fix two broken teeth. He stated that the teeth needed to be pulled and implants put in. When I asked how much that would be, I was told it was a certain price and that my insurance paid half of that and given the total due. I specifically asked if that was everything that I would owe and was told YES, that was my total share, period. I agreed to the price and started the process. Ten months later the procedure was finished. I asked them for the final balance so that I could pay them. They told me they would apply the final payment from my insurance and send me a final bill. It took 6 months to get the final bill and my share was over $2700 more than the price that I was quoted. When I complained, they told me the original amount was only for the first part and did not include the second part. When I argued that was not what I was told nor what I agreed to, they got rude and told me that I owed it and that they would go to collection if I didn't pay and ruin my credit. The doctor is a good doctor and did good work, but it is nowhere near the hassle and bulls*** that the office personnel give, and definitely not worth the exorbitant amount of money they try to charge after the fact. read more

Dr Pasternak is the GREATEST...I live in the neighborhood and was in between dentists (unhappy with my old one) when I began to have wisdom tooth pain. Checking the handy smartphone for dentists in my area. I called Dr. Pasternak's office and Erin was able to get me a appt. the next day. Dr Pasternak was friendly, and funny. Great combo. I unlike most people do have a fear of the dentist's chair but like many don't like people mucking about in my mouth. Dr P made it much more enjoyable and less stressful. Out came the wisdom teeth and even though shots in the mouth are unholy, he was very attentive to me and it made the whole experience better. (liked the laughing gas too). He even called me that night to see how I was doing. (UNHEARD OF !!!!!!). I had no issues with the charges ( all were explained up front and I was told exactly what was owed) and I was back the next month for Deep Cleanings. Thank You Dr. P and your great staff. I have been going to Dr. Pasternak for years. I have teeth that are prone to plaque buildup. My mouth is very sensitive and I had terrible results with other dentists or hygienists. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis. My mouth breaks out in terrible sores when undergoing any stress. Laura is the only one I will let touch my mouth for cleaning. She gave me a plan to get my gums healthy again and it has worked! No more bleeding, painful sensitive gums or teeth! The entire staff at his office are outstanding. When I have major work done, such as crowns, I can get up as often as I need to and they have all kinds of things to make me feel more comfortable.
