My first visit was great--X-rays, a thorough exam, a cleaning with a gentle yet effective hygienist, and a thoughtful conversation about Invisalign and how to prevent cavities from forming. Everyone in the practice is friendly, patient-centered, and caring about what's best for the patient. Costs were also explained up front and tailored to my budget. Plus their rates are better than my old dentist in Alameda! My second visit was for a cavity filling and Dr. Mattingly narrated every step (his next career could be as a voice over for nature films) and the procedure was painless! I was met by the receptionist, Sabrina. she not only let me wash my hands, but she let me hang out in her office that was cool until my dr came back from lunch. The dentists themselves, Dr. Tan and Dr. Mattingly, are absolutely wonderful. Their care has always been professional, thorough, and welcoming, which is why I stayed with this clinic and spent around $8,000-$9,000 here over the past year. Unfortunately, my experience with the office administration has been very different. I was told by Erin that my benefits would be restarting in July 2025. It wasn't phrased as "I think" or "I believe" -- it was stated as fact. Trusting that information, I scheduled my cleaning. Later I found out this wasn't true, and have to pay for the visit fully out of pocket. When I raised my concerns, instead of hearing empathy or even an acknowledgment of the misunderstanding, I felt dismissed. Erin has consistently come across with attitude, and when I received a voicemail and phone call from Arlene, the tone felt accusatory rather than understanding. Even a simple "I'm sorry for the mix-up, unfortunately that wasn't the case" would have gone a long way. I understand the balance is my responsibility but it would've been nice at least knowing that leadership will review the previous verbiage used so the team can avoid similar misunderstandings for future patients. Instead I got "but like I said, this is your responsibility to know your benefits just like it is outlined in all the forms that you signed". The dentists are the reason this is a 3-star review and not lower, because the clinical care is excellent. But after this experience with the administrative staff, I no longer feel comfortable continuing as a patient here. read more

After 6 years, I'm still happy with the entire staff. I had teeth cleaning today from Aleks and talked to Dr Tan. I realized that I've been lucky to only have 3 dentists since 1977. Two retired and when Dr Mattingly took over the practice, I stayed and continue. On the few occasions I've needed help in a hurry, I've always gotten a fast appointment, which apparently isn't the case with many dentists. I really appreciate it because as much as I hate going to the dentist, I hate pain even more. Without insurance, it's getting pretty expensive but I would never chance one of the cheaper chain offices with dentists that are often mediocre at best, according to what I've read and heard from others. Very, very, very good dentist. Did I say good? I meant great! Kind and friendly staff, clean office, and the location is great, just off of Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek, parking is good too. All that is great, but the Dentist, Dr. Mattingly is such a great Dr. He takes time with each patient, asks questions to find out exactly what the problem is, gives his recommendation taking into account everything that is going on. He's my favorite dentist, and I kind of home that you don't choose him because I will have to wait months to see him, but I do want him to grow his business, so I guess I will have to get used to waiting. This review is for Dr Mattingly and his partner Dr Tan. These are excellent dentists, who out patient comfort first. I had Dr Tan fill a cavity in my rear molar yesterday, and she was so, so careful, their new equipment made the drilling and filling easy and comfortable. Dr Tan is funny and careful with her work, double checking to make sure it's done right. Her assistant Maria is so careful, lovely to chat with and they work together so nicely as a team. I highly recommend them. PS I am a former patient of Bruce Scott, who owned this practice for many years. I see Dr. Tan at this office. I hadn't been to the dentist in over 2 years due to fear. I've been dealing with the same phobias since I was little. I cannot express enough how great this office has been in accommodating me. They all know how scared I am going in, and I've had nothing but great things to say after walking out. I have been working with Dr. Mattingly on my Invisalign treatment and he has been a consummate professional the entire time helping ensure that the entire process has been flawless. I had to have some work done (sadly some cavities) and speaking from experience having quite a few as a child I can say this was the BEST experience I have ever had getting cavities fixed. My husband and I just started going to Dr Mattingly and I was not very pleased. My first appointment wasn't even the cleaning I'd expected, he said he'd "take a look at my teeth and then give me an ESTIMATE" at the end of my visit he seemed rather disappointed that I didn't need any "work" done, just a regular cleaning---which I had to come in for a few days later. My husband went in and his "estimate" was very costly, of course they said everything was absolutely necessary. I don't trust him and we won't be going back. Overall, I was deeply disappointed with his service and only gave one star for the cleaning service. I have used dentists in other countries as well as the USA, this is my only bad experience. Costs for services was very pricy too, I found to be expensive. The workmanship I was not pleased with either, as a ridge was left on a filling. First thing before even looking at your mouth is a 10 minute video on Invisalign (my teeth aren't visually messed up to start out with that aggressive type of sales pitch) I felt like I was at a used car dealership and kept getting sold on stuff I didn't ask for nor need. It was a quick check up and then boom! What kind of insurance do you have? Ok, it'll cost this much for this or that and I was thinking to myself.. why am I here? I have always had a great experience at his dentist office. Dr. M is nice, and honest, and direct, doesn't evade the questions and it goes quickly and he spends time to make it right. This is big coming from a dentist hater. Knocking your front teeth out in 1965 in a small town in Nebraska meant going to the only dentist in town that practiced in a basement at the end of a dark hallway. The fat needles and his awful hair and black eyes come roaring back whenever I run across that distinctive dank basement smell. I was under construction with head gears and silver teeth for years after that incident and I remember nothing good. All that bad stuff is nowhere near when I walk into Mattingly's office. If I lived in another state I would probably fly back here to be able to go to him. In fact, I'll probably still have teeth when I am old because of him. Now thats something. read more

Dr. Mattingly is quite possibly the most gentle dentist I have been to. I decided to switch dentists to a local office despite liking my previous dentist. I've had trouble in the past getting and staying numb and having painful injections. Not the case here. I was completely comfortable and liked the sense of security being able to use his drill stop button if I felt any discomfort during the procedure, which I did not need to use. I interacted with two of his assistants, both of which were friendly and professional.
