We got married here and went back this year for our 4 yr. wedding anniversary. Not only did we get a free wine tasting but we also met some great couples at the tasting and in the courtyard. There is a great ambience in this place and the staff is as friendly as back when we got married. They have a red wine that has a cinnamon finish thats excellent with chocolate (makes it taste like a choc. covered cherry) or great heated up for the winter. I have been to their winery a couple of times now. First, was a wedding a couple of years back (which was stunning) and then not too long ago for one of their many events. Great place to try wine with a group of friends while having a great picnic. I have never been here when there wasn't a main event, so I cannot judge the overall winery on it's own. I can say that the venue is quite nice and I have never had a bad time there. The wines are pretty good and considering it is so close to Richmond (off Route 1, down the road from VCC Mall), it makes visiting a winery that much easier. read more

I had my wedding here in May and I am so glad we picked this venue! The were so great to us and accommodating (they even re-mulched the week before my wedding). They included tables, chairs, tents, glasses, a coordinator, bartender, they allow outside catering (Carytown Burgers and Fries was a show stopper), and you can bring in your own beer. read more

Great little winery close to home. Their selection is not bountiful but the wines that they do have are good. The staff is very friendly and they have items, games and even toys to keep you and your children occupied as you enjoy a bottle or two of wine. Their food menu consists of cheese trays and such and they are priced accordingly and you need to sign up for their new letter as JRWC hosts various music events throughout the year. LOVED this winery! My Mom and I stopped by around noon on a Friday. We were the only tasters there so we received a lot of attention from the gal pouring the wine. She was very informative and was able to answer all our questions. We were able to taste about 8 wines, which was fun. Afterwards, my Mom and I purchased a glass each and were able to go upstairs and sit on the balcony to enjoy the wine and the lunch I had packed. The weather was perfect. The outdoor patio was closed due to an issue with the neighboring driving range, but the balcony was perfect for my Mom and I! I have been to the winery a number of times. It tends to always have a pretty good crowd which leads to an initial problem when visiting-golf balls. The overflow parking area is near enough to a driving range that there is real chance of an errant ball off of the club of a not so competent golfer coming into it. The plus side is tht this makes the walk to the tasting room interesting! My wife and I visited a few months ago and encountered some really nice pourer at the tasting on a Saturday. Overall the wines are fair, nothing jumped out at us either as a positive or negative. Weare not usually Chardonnay fans but actually enjoyed the 2012 Reserve so much that we bought a few bottles. We also purchased the Rad Red and Chambourcin. Prices were not bad and the $5.00 tasting is in line with most wineries that we have visited in VA. What is nice is if you decide to join the wine club, you do not get charged the tasting fee AND receive an additinoal discount on purchases. The overall experience is a good one.Sitting outside in the srping/fall is relaxing. It is a tad warm in the summer. read more

We were on a wine and beer crawl on 95 N on our way from Jacksonville to DC (via myrtle beach). This was about a 2 mile detour for us and worked out great. We were surprised on how busy the place was. It costs 5 dollars to taste all their wines (14 when we visited) which is a good deal. The girls working here were volunteers and seemed happy and welcoming. We did feel rushed a bit during our tastings probably due to the crowds and being close to end of day. read more

This Winery really is a gem off route 1! You wouldn't know it passing by but my good friend Ashley took me here for a sunny afternoon on 03/24/2016. We sat upstairs on the balcony and it was wonderful. The wine tasting are get this, only $4.75 each! And you sample like over 10 wines!!! The bottle only cost me $16.00 and we got the Chardonel which was wonderful! I live in Northern Virginia and the closest winery I got too is Clifton and their cheapest bottle is $25.00 and wine tastings are expensive as well. I want to come here every single time I come to the Richmond area. Loved it!!! read more

Instead of sitting in traffic on 95N we decided to veer off and follow the signs to James River winery on a Sunday afternoon. It was almost 4, but upon arriving we learned that they actually close at 6pm. We were welcomed by a round of hellos from tasters and staff which set the tone for the afternoon. After a young of laughs and samples my husband and I decided to join the wine club. After doing so, our oenophilist offered to share her delicious "not on the menu" red velvet cupcake. The staff was informative, attentive and friendly. All in all we had a wonderful experience and look forward to coming back soon! read more

I have just left this excellant winery. They have a large variety of wines (I tasted 12). All were good examples of the variatal. The 2012 Cabernet Franc and Meritage were excellant. They served Chardonnel, that was especially nice. This is somewhat unusual as Chardonnel is normally used as a blending grape in Virginia. The Real Santa Red is one of the best Christmas spiced/mulling wines that I have had. I rarely like that type of wine. I will be returning on my next trip to/through the Richmond area. read more

I stopped here with my parents to avoid beltway traffic on a Monday afternoon for our first winery experience. It was excellent! Keep in mind I had no idea what to expect and have nothing to compare our experience to but I was impressed with the wine, pricing, and customer service! First of all, we were able to try 13 wines for $5 which I thought was a deal. Dennis was absolutely great! He also gave us a private, mini tour even though it was raining out which we really appreciated! We had a great time and will definitely be back if we're in the area again! read more

We went on a Friday afternoon and it was still cold outside and rainy. We did the wine tasting which was so much fun and then got a bottle and went upstairs with some cheese and crackers! Okay wines. Awful service. We have had great experiences in the past traveling to various winery's in Virginia. Good service and welcoming environments. Today this all CHANGED. We waited 15 minutes after arrival at the tasting table. Not busy and four servers at the table. After 15 minutes of waiting to explain the wines and serve the wine, we were acknowledged. For the next 45 minutes, my husband and I sat as the four servers mingled with the other customers. Finally my husband asked if anyone could help us as we considered the purchasing of wine and the attention was received. Not sure what the long term vision is for the owners of this winery, but I would invest time in your servers/sales staff on the importance of making every customer feel as if they were the most important. read more

Why I like James river winery. It's close by. (just reread that and it makes me sound like a wino!) Need something fun to do on a weekend? There is normally something going on here. It's in a weird location - off Route 5 and next to a golf course, so it's not like a lot of the wineries you go to in Charlottesville as far as location but I still think the ambiance is good. There is an expansive lawn and tables and chairs to sit on the side of the tasting house and also balconies upstairs as well. I have never been here for just a tasting in the middle of the day but I have been to 5 tasting events here and I can't think of any reason not to give those 5 stars. There is always plenty of parking and the area is always clean. Something I find with some wine tasting places is the glasses seem dirty - even though they are supposed to be brand new! Not here! Also they have a good variety of wines and the prices are fair. Little secret if you go for a tasting ladies - there is another bathroom upstairs :) as we always seem to have a line.. The chamborcin is my favorite and it sells out all over Richmond, so if you find a wine you like here - buy it here! read more

I wanted wine tasting to be part of my birthday festivities and we hit the jackpot! I had no Earthly idea that this winery existed and it is literally 15 minutes away from my house. Well at least I know now! There weren't that many people in there when we got to the cute little house, but that was good because we got extra special attention! The guy facilitating the tasting was so knowledgeable and patient with us. We were not wine connoisseurs when we walked in but he made sure that we were by the time we left! It was an awesome experience. My friend and I both walked out with a bottle (and I had no intentions of doing so). The best part about this particular tasting is that we got to taste a whopping 15 wines! They just so happened to have some bonus wines in for that day. I would definitely go again; especially in the summer when they have music and food trucks (I love food trucks). A small winery, but there are many great wines to taste! There's also golf course next to it if you are interested in playing golf! The winery has a lot of connection with American history! The names of wines is related to American history, I enjoyed learning about it. The best part is I love their design on the wine glass! It is sailing! I would go back here again. My family and I visited the JRC winery for their Mother's Day event this past Sunday. The day was almost ruined by the long wait it took to purchase bottles of wine. They only had one person available to attend to the hundreds of customers looking to purchase. I personally waited a whole hour before being able to buy our wine for drinking. This is unacceptable for an event like this. I was not the only customer with a complaint. Later in the day, they finally opened up another station where you could purchase the wine, which was located in the tasting area under the tent. There is no way they should have expected to handle the crowds purchasing wine with only one person checking them out, and better planning should have been done ahead of time to avoid angry and frustrated customers. I would not attend this event in the future unless they have a better set-up for tasting and purchasing. read more

Poor customer service. Owner/gardener was rude and upset kids who were on the property playing games and football in the front grass within reach of us parents. Kids were respectful and actually complimented by strangers on their behavior. They played in the grass with a football as we enjoyed the wine and beautiful weather. No one seemed bothered by us until this "gardener/owner" came out and got upset because one of the 5 year old girls picked a flower. Mind you no signs are posted to not pick flowers. Other patrons witnessed the "owners" behavior towards us and they left the property as well immediately as did we. Really sad that he doesn't appreciate the patrons and would rather cause a scene instead of let kids be kids. Kids were visibly upset thinking they did something wrong when they did not. Really a shame that he chose to be a douche instead of appreciating the business he had. We will NEVER set foot there again! Obviously this is NOT a kid friendly place! read more

I had my wedding there, and now wished that I didn't. Don't get me wrong this place seems great for small things like wine tasting, meeting with a few friends, and other stuff like that. It was not a good setting for a wedding though. Me and my husband felt as though we were lied a lot. They constantly told us one thing, and then turned around and said the opposite. When we first paid for the place, we were told we would be able to set up the night before, and since we were catering it ourselves we could use the kitchen that's located in the same room we rented. Then a week and a half before the wedding they said we couldn't use the kitchen, and had to replan everything for the meals. Also When we first signed for the place they said we would be able to set everything up the night before. Well they booked the place we had rented out the day we were suppose to set up. The woman said she talked to the other lady and explained the situation, and that they'd be gone by 5. The other party didn't leave until about 6:15. In the mean time we had all of our decor and pre-made chilled foods in our cars withering in 105 degree heat. Then she said we would absolutly have to be out by 9 and we couldn't stay a minute later b/c she had plans, and that she was being nice by letting us set up past 6 anyways(she said this with total attitude as well, and everyone with me was in complete shock that we were being talked so down to.) So what were we suppose to do if our wedding was at like 10 in the morning when they first opened. It just didn't make since. Our wedding was at 2, but seriously what were we suppose to do if it was earlier. You're going to tell me you wouldn't of gave me time to set everything up. The situtation was awful, and got worse. I had to cancel hair and makeup appointments just so I could go there first thing in the morning on their convience to finish setting everything up. I had to cut my decor in half b/c they screwed up and didn't give us enough time to set everthing up. That's stuff I spent money on and didn't even get to use. They never even sympathised or anything. Thanks to them I'll forever remember all the mistakes and money I wasted on stuff for my wedding that I didn't even get to use. I felt like it was like as soon as they got their money, they just stopped caring. It was like they would tell us everything we wanted to hear when we booked it, and then change everything around and stopping caring once they got their money. They made me and my husband feel as though we were about as important as fleas. I've never seen him get so mad over a situation before, and we dated for over 4 years before we got married. I will never go here again because of this, and neither will my friends or family. We were in complete shock over the attitude we were being treated with, and the total disregards for our feelings. I wish I never got married there. read more
