We came here while waiting for our RV to be fixed as a way to kill time. It was the best way to do so. It was raining pretty hard the day we visited so we didn't get to see much of the lovely grounds, but what we saw was very nice. We were also able to bring our dog, which was good because she was a puppy at the time. When we visited it was during COVID19, so we expected to be outside anyway. Easy to find with plenty of parking. We loved the wines after a tasting we ended buying 6 bottles. The tasting room was nicely decorated and staff very friendly. I had a blast here and was really sad I could get shipments to Vegas, but I understand. The tasting room was cute and the property was beautiful!! I could have stayed there all day if my partner let me. The tasting room staff were friendly, fun and funny. I would for sure go back to here. The Rad Red wine was good and the Hanover Red. The tasting room was never empty with new visitors coming and going; yet, there was plenty of space inside and outside for everyone. Hope to go back soon. read more

My sister was in town after Christmas and she loves to visit the vineyards around Virginia. I've heard really great things about James River but haven't made the trip to check it out. My sister drove up from South Carolina and the last thing either of us wanted to do was spend an hour+ in the car, so we decided to check out James River and I'm glad we did. We arrived just before noon and the place was completely empty. I'm not surprised given that it was just a few days after the holiday and people were probably returning items, recovering or just taking it easy. Jeremy was working the tasting room and greeted us the moment we walked in. We were fortunate to taste about a dozen wines and the price of tasting was super reasonable. The trick is to not finish your taste, especially if you're driving. Jeremy spent a lot of time explaining the wines, helping us learn about the varietals, how they're made and patiently answering our questions. He was awesome. I ended up buying 3 bottles and my sister bought one. They have construction underway--not sure what they're building, but I hope it involves serving food. Having options for food would keep people at the winery longer and would definitely be a bonus. I'll be returning very soon. Love that this quaint winery is less than 15 minutes away and the wines they produce are totally drinkable and some are stellar. read more

Very,very nice folks. Great winery, great wines. Love the Petit Mansing. They treated us so wonderfully.

We came in May for a birthday celebration. There was a good amount of people all around the winery. Luckily we got a table on the deck for our party of 7. When we came there were 2-3 food trucks in the back and most of the food was good. The winery had a few flights to choose from, but I stuck to the wine slushee which was delicious but expensive for just a little cup. Staff were nice, and the family had a good time. read more

James River Cellars Winery has certainly stepped their cookies up for 2018! I haven't been to this winery since 2016 and when I went last week I was floored by how much it had changed. First of all, they've completely remodeled and added so much space to this winery. It's HUGE. There's an outdoor patio, indoor tasting room, indoor tables. Ugh, it's beautiful. I'm so happy for them. Moving on to the wine! I've always loved JRC Wine because it's local and because the staff is always so knowledgeable and entertaining. The wine is also good, don't get me wrong. This place is perfect in the spring/summer time. They offer wine tastings which I believe are about in the $10 range and now they offer WINE FLIGHTS. How cool is that? I love a good variety! I got the wine tasting and a glass of their wine slushy. Now, just one moment of silence for their wine slushy. I feel like I could drink that thing all summer. It's SOOOOO good. They often change the kinds of wine they put in the slushy but it's always really good! They even sell the stuff to make your own. If you haven't been, please go! It's well worth it! read more

A few friends and I attended two special events this month. The signage from Rt 1 is nonexistent and the lights along the sidewalk were not on. The parking area was also dark. Since it is dark by 5 and the events were 6-8, it was difficult to see and potentially dangerous as there were some steps. The first event was paint and wine. The serving of wine was what you would expect and it was an instructor led event with all of the supplies provided. A great evening. The second was cookie decorating. The wine was a skimpy portion, there was a line and they didn't have the upstairs fully stocked. We were told when we entered that we would get our wine upstairs; once upstairs they announced that we can get the wine either upstairs or downstairs. The cookie decorating was not instructor led. They gave you 3 cookies, icing and toppings and you were in your own. We were very disappointed as were many of the other patrons. We were done and walking out the door by 6:30. read more

It's been several years since we were last here and that time we came, it was with a large group for a wine festival. We really enjoyed that visit, so while back in the area this time we figured we'd stop in, on a Tuesday around noon or so. They were actually quite busy at the bar and the friendly gentleman at the bar started our tasting, but then it switched over to a much less personable lady who seemed like we were bothering her. The pours were stingy and the wines were mediocre. The seating is a little odd, lined up tables and nothing more comfortable to allow lounging while sitting & sipping, like most wineries we typically visit. But the prices were really decent, considering this is VA wine and that tends to run high in price. Overall it wasn't too bad, but I can't say I'd return unless it was for another event/festival with friends. read more

I've been to James river cellars a few times now. And every time I've had a different experience. This time around it was course accompanied by good ole COVID. All the employees were wearing gloves and masks and clearly stated their guidelines and practices as soon as you walk in. Although they are unable to offer the wine tasting. They still allow you to sample whatever you're looking into buying. They have outdoor area for everyone to sit, or you can bring your own blanket or chairs and sit out on the lawn. They normally have different events going on, and this particular day they had a live band out there which was a great addition to the day. I definitely recommend for those who live in the Richmond area, it's only about 15-20 minutes from downtown! read more

Decided to stop in on the way back from Charlottesville after Google made me aware of its existence. It is in a strange location for a winery, next to some golf/baseball type venue. I asked the staff and they told me it started as another business and then they went into wine. On this day they were doing a Girl Scout cookie and wine pairing. You get a flight of wine with Girl Scout cookies that are supposed to go with the wine. I frankly didn't care for most of the wines or the cookies that they gave us. After trying that interesting selection, we opted to do a full tasting. I wanted to give the place a chance. The tasting area was pretty packed. And they had a nice selection of reds and whites. My favorite two were there Oaked Chardonnay and their Monitor. I bought a bottle of both and they are both gone now. Overall I would say this place is cute and a nice change from all of the breweries in Richmond. I think it can do with a new space especially since the vineyard is not on-site. I like that they have live music and events. Fun place to pop in if you're in the area. read more

This is a very beautiful place. Not only is the scenery really gorgeous, but the wine is very popular there. The location is totally unexpected because it looks like the highway, so you do need to keep your eyes open. I went here to do some wine tasting with a really good friend and it was actually her first time. The wine tasting was quick and delish and we ended up buying a few bottles. We didn't want the date to end so we opened up a bottle and bought the prosciutto cheese roll with crackers to eat with our wine as well. All the tables and chairs were taken on the ground level, so we got a really good spot on the balcony. The view was beautiful and unfortunately, it was really hot. :/ Anyways, the place is pretty good and their wine is delicious. My husband and I are a huge fan of the Rad Red and for sweets I highly suggest the chambourcin and Hanover White. The Salsa that they sell at the place is pretty good as well, I think they're actually local. read more

James River is one of the closest wineries to Richmond, and set in a surprisingly urban area. They have some vines on the grounds, but mostly I think this is for show - their 20 acre vineyard is actually in the town of Montpelier. This may primarily be tasting room, but it's a pretty nice one! As for their wines, I didn't dislike anything, but neither did I especially enjoy anything either. The reds trended towards mild (except the Petit Verdot), while the whites were typically somewhat (but not overly) sweet. But the prices were all very reasonable, they have a broad selection, and they also have wine slushies. I tried 13 wines; here are a few of the better ones; 2012 Petit Verdot: Jammy nose & palate. Surprisingly medium bodied 2014 Chardonnay: Crisp apple 2014 Hannover red blend: Made with the Chancellor grape (the parent of Chambourcin) and several other reds; not bad I'll have to visit in another year, when they have their Pinot Noir. read more

The wines that we had were pretty good. But the location is terrible. It looks out over a highway and industrial buildings, it's noisy and unpleasant. It's right next to a golf driving range, so there is a constant sound of whacking balls. The staff are rude and unpleasant. The pours are ridiculously tiny. Our $7 glasses of wine MAY have been 4oz pours, barely more than most places give for a sample. I really don't ever see myself coming back or ever recommending James River Cellars. read more

I just completed a wine tasting here and I just want to say, Logan is very knowledgeable and just a fun person. The wines were great, but I'm having an issue with my taste buds right now. I know it's not the wines because I've experienced the issue with 2 other wineries. The sweet wines were remarkably good even though I'm not a sweet wine drinker. With a dog friendly tasting room, JRCW is a great place to go if you love wine, but also love to take your pup everywhere like I do! Their bottle prices are very reasonable with most being around $15-20. Their tastings are $8 or $10 if you want to keep the glass and you get a pretty good number of wines to taste. They will even give you a couple extra wines to taste if they have a couple extra open bottles. The bottom tasting room is pretty small and can get pretty crowded, but they have a second tasting area upstairs as well. The grounds of the winery itself isn't very scenic compared to many of the other wineries in Virginia and there isn't a lot of land to roam around on. On the weekends, they can get pretty busy here, but usually you can easily find a space to settle in the grass on a blanket. read more

Went today for the wine and cheese pairing. We loved the idea of trying 8 wines each paired with a different cheese. The problem was that the had a large number of people signed up and you moved through 3 stations. A lot of pressure to hurry along because of the long line behind you. Very small pour for each wine and two of the cheeses were communal. You took a small spoon and scooped out your taste. Biggest problem in my mind is that they were next to each other so you know people were eating off the spoon and dipping in the second dish. All in all a great idea that was poorly executed. The total "tasting" experience was 15 minutes for $15/per person. Really disappointed in this event. read more

I went here for the first time on a rainy Saturday. The wine tasting price was reasonable and you get taste about 12 wines. The staff is very knowledgeable about the wines, but there was one guy that went above and beyond. He was able to tell us what foods we could pair the wines with, what other wines we could compare them to, and even the best seasons to enjoy the wines. I really enjoyed myself. He even told us about some of the upcoming events that I can't wait to attend. I'm not a big wine drinker but I enjoyed this place and would recommend it to anyone. read more

Stumbled across this winery taking a detour during mass traffic on I-95 and I've been back quite a few times since. I love hidden gems. This one sits on Rte1 between Richmond and Ashland. So if you visit over the next few months you will notice construction but be patient it's for your future benefit.They are expanding- adding another wing with bar for 40...as well as somethings upstairs and outdoors. The place still booms from the local visitors but I've managed to do both weekday visits (for alone time with a bottle of wine and a book) and weekend tastings with no issue. Service is excellent and the frozen wine slush is so delish! Don't drink and drive. My suggestion is to grab a local bite and spend a few hours. It's a great place to wine down. (- pun) As you enter you will notice a golf driving range next door so there is a sign posted to alert you to be careful. Don't let it keep you away. James River Cellars has probably the oddest location of any Virginia winery I've visited over the last couple years. The tiny vineyard lies directly along Route 1, sandwiched between a truck sales company and a driving range (one of us may or may not have rolled an ankle on an errant, neon-yellow golf ball walking up to the tasting room). From the front porch one can watch traffic fly by on the highway and hear the {{thwack thwack}} of folks practicing their golf swing. It's definitely not the prettiest or most relaxing setting in the world. The tasting room is quite small. When we entered there were four people at the tasting bar being helped by an older gentleman. We were ignored at first, standing awkwardly until the older gentleman said drily, "I presume you're here for a tasting," and set two glasses on the bar. I was already formulating thoughts for a Yelp review when suddenly the dude -- Dennis -- turned on the charm and ended up giving us a nice tasting with lots of personality (although it felt terribly fast-paced). Most tasters will tell you which foods to pair their wines with, but not many will do so with the mouthwatering detail Dennis did. After our tasting I wanted to find the nearest all-you-can-eat buffet. $5 included 13 wines: 2010 Chardonnay, 2009 Gewüztraminer, 2010 Vidal, 2010 Chardonel, 2010 Rad Red (50/50 blend of Cab Franc and Merlot), 2008 Cabernet Franc, 2008 Merlot, 2008 Hanover (with Cab Franc and Chancellor grapes), 2011 Chambourcin, 2008 Colonial Red (Merlot infused with cinnamon post-fermentation), 2008 Montpelier Blush, 2010 Hanover White, and 2010 Divino (in the Eiswein style with 12% abv *and* r.s.). I found many of the wines to be palatable but unremarkable, and several were too sweet for me -- obviously the Divino but also, and surprisingly, the Chambourcin with a sugar content of 4.9%. The wines that stood out the most to me were the juicy Rad Red, the Cabernet Franc with notes of green pepper, and the off-dry Chardonel. Three of James River's wines are touted as "Gold Medal Winners," but they don't say which awards. Overall, I feel relatively neutral about James River. Average wines, weird setting, but a convenient location. You be the judge. read more

MK was my tasting expert and not only was she knowledgeable but also so fun. I loved chatting with her about wine and learning and laughing! This vineyard is located close to the border between Ashland and Glen Allen, Va. I love most of the wines that they make here, particularly the reds. They make a Chambourcin that apparently has the nickname "baby maker". After a bottle of the Chambourcin, I began to understand how the name came about... The grounds are nice and they have a lot of stuff going on during the weekends. The tasting room is kind of on the small side but the people working there all know what they are talking about. They offer decent discounts on bottles and cases and charge a small fee for tasting. read more

There was a towering magnolia tree, hydrangeas decorating the grounds where there were plenty of tables & chairs outdoors for nice days. They even have seating on the outdoor deck! The place is not a huge operation and its local. Love it. The wine tasting is $5 and, hold on to your seats, a tasting of 14 wines!!!! For wines, we got two whites, two reds (one a more pricey bottle described by our taster as a rustic lodge lol), two desserts. I'm always on the lookout for places I can take my two pooches. This local winery often hosts special pet-friendly events which benefit the Richmond SPCA. also like the Fridays on the Patio, where you can sit outside, listen to live music, do a tasting, and munch on some light hors d'oeuvres. For under twenty bucks, it's a great...or grape as the case may be...date night option. They do tastings seven days a week and the price is really reasonable ($5). They have some decent reds and whites, but this is not Kluge, so oenophiles need to keep their expectations in check. It's a fun way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon or a different place to take friends and visitors. read more

The backstory to the beginning of the vineyards shares a common thread of a love of the grapes that grew into a family business. HORRIBLE AWFUL HEINOUS experience at JRC - *NOT* family friendly. Here's what happened: My family arrived on Sunday 4/7/19 around 3:15pm with three other families - 8 adults & 9 kids total. FWIW - Our kids are well-behaved and VERY well supervised (other patrons felt compelled to comment on how courteous & well behaved the kids were). Our boys were having fun throwing the football around in the front lawn while the girls colored and played with other activities we packed. About 2 hours into our visit, two of our girls (both 5 years old) came to the table, each with one flower in their hands - one red tulip & one yellow tulip. Before any of the parents had a chance to speak with the girls about not picking the flowers, a JRC employee (who first identified himself as the gardener, then later said he's the owner - both lies) reprimanded and berated the girls for "ruining the flower beds" - this rude old man made our five year olds CRY because they picked a flower. Of course, as parents we were quick to come to the girls defense, while acknowledging that the girls shouldn't have picked the flowers. He then proceeded to lie to the large group of patrons assembled (including our 4 families) about how the other children also wreaked havoc on the property. THEY DID NOTHING OF THE SORT. This old man continued with his abusive and insulting comments about our children & their behavior. For a winery that touts themselves as "family friendly" they seriously missed the mark. Don't waste your time or money here. With so many options in & around the Richmond area, I urge EVERYONE to go somewhere else. read more

Although the view of the moving cars on Washington Highway may be off-putting, we instead focused on our wines, the sunset, and the vines in front of us. For $8, tastings of 14 wines is amazing and really gave us a feel for the effort, love, and GREAT descriptions the owner has for his wines (we were told that the gentleman who wrote the descriptions of the wines was a journalism major in college and we LOVED his humor, play on words, etc.). Because we were the only ones in the tasting room (tastefully "decorated" with be-ribboned, award winning bottles of their wines, posters advertising their events and products, plus a wine barrel, or two to lean on), we were given a great deal of attention and good, local talk and, all in all, between the sunsets, the mellow, soft wines, and good talk, we had a great time. I could NOT wait to write this review! I went this morning, with a friend, to the James River Cellars Winery. What an AWFUL experience! Unbelievable to say the least. As we arrived, there was one barista behind the counter helping another client. I waited and then walked to the bar counter. She was unwelcoming and treated us as if we were not worth her time. She never introduced herself, did not explain any of the wine tasting options, and provided little to no details about the available flights, and did not explain a single detail about the daily function of the winery. As I looked at the wine menu on the counter (which she did not provide; it was already there), she started helping yet another customer. I did not interrupt her while she helped the customer before me, and I did not expect her to allow us to be interrupted as well. She never offered wine tasting options, so my friend and I just selected our bottles from the menu. She did provide us with the small taste cups, which I guess made her feel she helped us. I have purchased James River wines for years; however, I WILL NEVER GO TO THE JAMES RIVER CELLARS WINERY AGAIN!! I have no intention of going somewhere where we cannot get the same level of service as the customer before us or after us! The strange thing is that my friend and I did not talk about this until we were on our way back home (an hour away from the winery). We both felt the same way. We both felt like we were not welcome at the winery. We felt we were intentionally made to feel unwanted. The James River Cellars winery staff was truly successful!
