This review is long overdue. Came here on a recommendation a few months ago and got my hair cut and styled by Mary and I was impressed with the results. I have frizzy curly hair (prone to breakage) and all the past hair salons I've gone to, did not know how to cut or style my hair. I made an appointment with Mary at 6pm and I was greeted by her when I got there. She had a very friendly demeanor, very accommodating. She asked me a couple of questions about my hair and my preferences and proceeded to wash and cut my hair. Mary was so fun and entertaining to talk to. She really knows a lot about hair and how to cut them so that it's flattering. She combed my hair from the bottom to the top, which is important for hair that is prone to breakage, and only used a scissor to cut (important to avoid split ends). I ended up loving my hair, whether I used an iron to straightened my hair or had it curly. I'm due for another hair cut soon so I'll definitely be returning. I think I finally found a hairstylist that I can always go to! read more

I bought a Groupon for a haircut + color session in December 2012. I was in and out of the salon within 1.5 hours, which was relatively quick compared to other salons I have been to color and cut my hair in one sitting. I will highlight reasons why they deserved 2 stars: - Upon entering, no one greeted me except for the stylist who was going to do my hair. She told me to wait in the front as she finished up. -Other stylists were talking and cussing loudly and gossiping about which concerts to go to. I don't care what you do in your free time, but I thought it was hugely unprofessional to behave like that. -My stylist and I made small talk, and she asked about my occupation. I told her I was a grad student to which she said, "Oh, I guess you people don't go out to party a lot, huh?" Whoa. Huh? "You people?" Heeyyy, I can have fun just like anybody else, too! :( -The owner of the salon--I'm assuming-- was on the next stall and had said to my stylist, "Oh my god, I hate Groupons. I know you hate them too!" ....Excuse me, I'm sitting THREE FEET from you and can hear you as clear as day. Hearing that made me question their willingness to bring their "A game." I'm still a paying customer. I may have purchased a discounted service but that does NOT mean you should downplay your skills and treat my hair in a sub-par fashion. - I had brought in pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like and I had specifically asked for short, wispy layers to frame my face. My stylist chimed back, "Yeah. That's what I've been doing." Trusting her, I let her finish her job. When I got home to inspect my hair cut closer, I was very disappointed. Instead of wispy, subtle, layers, I was given a blunt quasi-layered cut that made my head look like a MUSHROOM. At least, the color of my hair was okay. -The stylists seemed to know and favor the locals and treated them very nicely with warm conversations. I was treated with much haste and with barely any conversation at all. :( I'm never coming here again. read more

First time coming here after hearing many good things from my friend. This place is a true hidden gem in Temple City. If you are sick of typical Asian haircuts that make you look like a troll doll, come to James! He really takes what you have to say into consideration. He even stopped halfway to double check how short/long, thinned out/ thick I wanted my hair. If you don't know what you want, James will think of a modern, edgy haircut for you that you'll be sure to like. $18 for a wash and cut which took 30 minutes. Super convenient and he did a great job. HE DOESN'T USE A CLIPPER/BUZZER?! Not to mention the man is freaking hilarious. I'll be returning soon :) Be sure to make an appointment! read more

Dude!!! I love this place!! Everyone that works there is awesome....they are friendly and talented. James, the owner of the salon, is my stylist. Life would be miserable without him. My hair loves James and I love my hair, therefore, I love James. For $18 bucks you get a wash and cut. James is amazing...he's funny and super talented. He doesn't use a buzzer so you know that is some legit cutting right there. The Salon itself is set-up like a mechanic shop theme. Make your appointments at least a week in advance. The man and his team are always busy. Parking: available in front of the shop or back lot provides ample spaces. I can't see my life without James and his Salon. I'm a fan for life!! read more

When I go to James, I get a cut that costs less than $50 and looks like it cost $350. He is really really good at technical cuts and styles that mimic the ones you see in really high end salons in Beverly Hills. I currently have long hair, but he's done a really amazing shoulder-bob for me before and the layers were out of this world good. I have no idea why he's willing to charge such a reasonable price, but thank goodness. I also used to get my highlights done there. They looked great and he was FAST. I've never seen such a precise, fast colorist before. Saved me hours. I've moved away from this area but the quality and the savings keep me driving back to James. Oh and he's fun, too. I always have a good time talking with him and Mary while getting my hair done. I think Mary also has a massage service if you ask her. read more

This is my first time going to this Salon. I went in for Erika who used to only work in Beverly Hills but now she's doing two days in Temple City, so much closer. Erika has curly hair, she knows how to cut and style mine so I don't end up with triangle head. She added beautiful color and depth, she knows I'm a mom and really busy so she did something that I don't have to maintain on a schedule. She cut my hair while curly which is key for me. She's also amazing at blowouts and her prices are reasonable for her expertise. She's also really good with straight hair. I'm so glad she's in the area now. Go and see her, you will not be disappointed! read more

I am SO surprised that there is no yelp listing for this salon. They are great. James takes his time to give you the best hair cut and style possible. What I especially love about him is that he listens to people attentively and gives them (hair wise) what they are asking for. The place is decorated like a garage, hubcaps and the works. The one star is for Jame's absolute extraordinary talent. He is one of the best hair stylists in the region but the reliability of his business really disappoints me. I was cancelled on ALL three or four appointments that I booked or was randomly booked for me. I hope nobody has to ever go through what I went through... I love James but this is just ridiculous. I first called to schedule an appointment a week ahead after coming back from Berkeley. James called me and said he had to reschedule. A-ok he said he had a cold. For the agreed upon appointment. I went to the salon and waited outside for A WHOLE HOUR and nobody showed up. I called the salon the next day and there was no sense of apology from the lady I spoke to. She said they called to leave a message about James hurting his back. Never got the message. I was so fed up I went to another hairstylist who totally messed my hair up. A few weeks later, I got a call for an appointment I never made. The message went like this, "Sorry Jason we cannot cut your hair James is out." Wow this salon hates me so much that they called me to cancel a appointment I didn't even make. But somehow this time, they managed to leave me a message... It really sucks that I don't have a good and affordable hairstylist in Los Angeles now. I have to go through all the bull crap to find another talent like James... Love his haircuts, he is probably the best barber i've ever been to. However, its pretty hard to schedule an appointment... not uncommon for me to need to call 3 or 4 times just to get through to him. Also he can cancel his appointments on you without letting you know. read more

I have been going here for years and think that this is one of the best salon's I have ever been to. Not only are their prices more than reasonable James, Mary, and the other stylists constantly keep up to date with the latest trends and techniques. The best stylist in the San Gabriel Valley. He has been to different conventions throughout the world to become a better stylist. I have been going here for about 13 years. I wish I can always look the way I look when I come out of that place. He makes me look great. James is also one of the funniest individuals you will ever meet. James is a cool person, however, when it comes to his work I have a few doubts. First, he's unprofessional with customers and can come off as a total a** (I've never experienced this firsthand, but just witnessed/ overheard conversations). Second, he's super quick with hair cuts, which is great, but my hair would always end up choppy and have a lot of random long/ short strands. Third, his prices are pretty decent, but not for the quality. I used to suck up the fact that my haircuts weren't always great, and I've went to him for color about three times. This past time, I intended to go ombré, so I was in the first stage of going light when I went to James. He bleached my hair then applied color, but I when I went on vacation over Christmas time, my hair turned ORANGE! I was so horrified that I had to book an appointment for a random hair salon by where I was staying. They charged me $180 for color correction because my hair was so messed up from what James had done to it. On top of that, I had to get another haircut there because my cut was uneven. I paid $120 at James' salon just 2 weeks prior, then $200 to fix what he messed up. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back here and I'll be finding a better stylist. read more

A really great salon. Mary is a truly talented stylist. At my first appointment, she took the time to go through the salon's large supply of look books and magazines with me to figure out what I wanted in terms of style and color. The results were beyond my expectations. When I went back for a root touch up and trim, she matched the color perfectly. I used to spend 2 to 3 hours getting my hair done, but Mary gets me in and out in half the time. Talented, efficient, and friendly. Added bonus -- no one really used to notice my hair before, but now I get at least a few compliments a week. read more

I went in today for the first time this morning with Tangie. I just moved here recently and trusted the yelp reviews and I agree. I had a good experience and I felt like I was in good hands with Tangie. My friend who works for Toni and Guy (and who use to cut my hair) once told me that a good hairstylist always makes adjustments after they blow dry. that's something Tangie does. And I can fairly say I've had my share of bad cuts where they don't do that and u see these out of place, uneven pieces of hair that I end up having to adjust myself. I trust Tangie's skill and experience just as much as my friend and that tells me that she is comparable to anyone else at those uber high end salons. James is probably my best friend here. Ever since my cousin brought me along while getting ready for prom (8 years ago), I have been coming here to get my hair cut by James. He is so much fun to talk to and he always knows what he's doing. I usually like bringing multiple pictures of what hairstyles I like and I ask him to help me choose. He is FANTASTIC. Mistake coming to this place... knew people buzzing about this place, how great it was. I go in, first impression I get, seems like an OK place. My turn to go up, the girl calls my name in a pissed off tone, doesn't smile, instead of asking "What can I do for you today" I got "what do you want?" in the same pissed tone of voice. Tell her exactly how I want my hair cut... GRAB the part of my hair I told her to LEAVE LONG.. she ends up cutting my hair and styling it like she's done with the 98% of asian "frohawk" design... when the previous cut clearly wasn't like it at all... buzzed my sides all around without even asking a second time what I exactly wanted to do, figured I wanted the same style as every other asian guy out there. Bad attitude, racial profiling, doesn't listen to what someone is telling her. Horrible experience. Never going there again, and I will recommend everyone against this place. read more
