For the past 2 decades, my hair was brown with orange highlights because my previous hairdresser (whom is also a sweet person and I went to her until she retired) employed techniques that could only lighten my hair so much. I found Benson via Yelp and texted him to express what I'm trying to achieve. He replied quickly, gave a quote before I committed to an appointment, and when I arrived he did a full color correction with care- slowing and carefully painting small sections at a time while rotating around the entire head to ensure every strand was cared for. I am so SO satisfied with my haircut. With the over-saturation and focus on colorists in salons that specialize in women's hair, skill in just cutting hair seems to have taken the backseat over the years. I've been to different salons that just do the bare minimum when it comes to my hair: length and simple face framing. I've asked for layers in the past, but for the most part they've ended up looking one-dimensional and flat. However, Benson has done the total opposite and has given me the exact cut I wanted. He's even exceeded my expectations with the level of precision that he has at cutting. My hair is really thick and I have a lot of it. But Benson took the time to really cut, add layers, and thin out my hair. I love how light it feels, but while still maintaining the length I want it. It was also a very relaxing experience because there was no pressure to make small talk. The studio was a bit hard to find since it's so easy to miss or maybe it was just me. So I ended up being late to my appointment and got lost in the streets. I called Kay and she came and picked me up & dropped me off at my car and let me follow her car to the studio. When I got there Kay helped me choose which hair color would suit me since I had some worries about skin tone, my eyebrow colors etc. and Kay helped me decide on the color. If I had any questions Kay would explain it to me really well and gave me ideas on what suited me and would advise me not to do certain stuff I wanted because it would make me look older. So I was thankful Kay would advise me on how I should look since it was my first time dyeing my hair. Def try out this place if you're tired of the usual sgv crap salons. check out my birds nest turned sleek if you don't believe me. He also has extra layers of protection to keep hair away from my clothes and neck which i didn't expect but it was cool (some foam collar looking thing) and the shampoo wasn't the shitty cherry one that ratchet salon uses. it almost smelled like the high end japanese shampoo. My sister recommended Benson so I decided to give it a try. He is SO incredibly detail-oriented, focused, and seems to really care about giving you the outcome you want. Usually when I get my hair colored, there's inevitably a drop or two of dye that gets in the outer edges of my forehead. I was sporting an asymetrical bob I really liked but needed a trim for CNY. **Actually 4.5 stars** Wanted to try a new salon to re-dye my hair after a year since my first hair dye and found this one that was also pretty close to my boyfriend's house! I read great reviews about Benson, either it was just hair cuts or hair dying so I decided to give him a try. Made an appointment for a hair consultation and to get all the information I need before letting him take over my hair. He speaks little English and I barely know Chinese so another language barrier but that's okay! He was very patient and diligent! HAIR: so I showed him a picture of what I wanted and the color and everything and he started to get to work! The color was a balayage of a blonde/silver. He first trimmed/cut my hair. I didn't want to cut too much and he respected that I didn't want to cut too much but still wanted to get as many of the split ends out. Then he started on the coloring. It took around 4 1/2 hours and I think he did 2 - 3 sessions. I'm honestly not sure what's considered as a session. I've always thought it was when they would just apply different layers of the color. He definitely took his time and wanted to make sure to achieve the color I wanted and asked me to wait a little longer here and there since the color wasn't lightening my hair as he wanted. PRICE: $160 coloring + $40 hair cut. He said this is with the 20% check in on yelp. This is $60 less than what I paid for the first time and I was okay with it since it wasn't too cheap but also not too expensive and right in the middle of my price range! I personally didn't think the haircut price was worth for what I got. He did trim my hair and cut very little which is what I liked but he didn't cut it the way my hair already was, which was a V formation. I'm not sure if this is my fault as well since I didn't tell him but overalls even thicker than before and I don't like thick hair. It seemed like he just cut straight along the ends of my hair. :( but it's okay honestly, can get it fixed. RESULTS: other than my hair cut issue which wasn't a huge deal, the color wasn't the same exact color I was hoping. I showed him a more of a silver/blonde color that was also a balayage on the person in the picture. The color was the only issue but only at first, it started to grow on me just a little later on the day. I think the sun really makes a difference on the color! In the car is when I saw it was more blonde and a little silver. I think he didn't tone it enough but nonetheless, I still like it! I've gotten a lot of compliments when I posted pictures so I'm happy with that and I really like it at the end. :) the balayage is more of a technique as I've learned and been told and I'm not used to it since I've gotten an ombré before. Benson made my first bleaching/balayage experience super pleasant! I had super long, black hair coming into my session (approx 2 years since my last haircut). I wanted to snip a few inches off my hair and then dye it an ash brown that would fade naturally over time. My appointment was at 11am on a Wed afternoon and I was the only one there upon arrival so no wait. Was offered water, but if you have a longer session and want to eat you'd probably want to bring your own snacks (warning: bring easy finger foods cause moving around with all those foils in your hair is pretty difficult). My eyes did start watering a little as the bleaching got closer to my face but it stopped after a while #beautyispain I didn't make much conversation with Benson but I was okay with that (made it easier to study for the GRE ) Overall, as other reviewers have mentioned, Benson is nice and super gentle with hair! Only slightly negative thing is that my finished hair looked more brown than it did ashy but it doesn't look bad by any means! Would def recommend Pricing: I was initially quoted $180 for balayage & $48 for cut (for a 4-5 hr session) over the phone. After a 6 HR session, my final charge was $220 for balayage and $40 for my cut (20% off for first timers with yelp check-in). Even though I paid more than anticipated, I completely understood. Came here specifically wanting a belyage but wanted consultation first. I even showed him pictures of what I wanted and to make sure if it was something he can achieve. One of my main concern was the bleaching that can potentially cause great damage to my hair. He assured me he could still do a belyage without bleach although it would be subtle. He even showed me a sample of a light colored (ashy blonde hair) he could achieve without dye. My hair ended up being dyed a solid color - no variation in color at all. The color being dark brown (hardly no change to my original color). Furthermore, he tried to play it off like there was a change in color from root to tip. But no, there was no variation at all. This stylist did not listen at all to anything I had wanted. And he made me believe he could achieve something he couldn't. I was so disappointed. If I wanted a simple dye job, I could have gone to regular stylist and would have paid less than 1/2 of what Benson charged me. I felt absolutely scammed. read more
