Wifey and I haf the king-sized; comfy level 6/10. Overall, a clean experience! The floors looked redone (that wood tile-looking stuff), no critters were seen and spacious. The staff, accomidating. We didn't eat there but the resturant next door gives discounts if you stay here as well, I guess. I'd come here again!

MGM restaurant next to Motel is also very reasonable and has many options. There is also some night time entertainment at the restaurant, live music and dance classes. Problem was with smoky air in the room. In the morning I opened door and window to clear the air, motel cleaner walked past the room with cleaning supplies smoking, making room smoky again. I packed up and went to front desk. Manager was very nice about it all, and explained that my room was next to a smoking room, so it could have come from there. Cleaners are not supposed to walk around smoking she explained. Disappointed as otherwise its a good place to stay for a reasonable price and I wanted stay on for another night, but the smoke was too much for me.

Overcooked scrambled eggs, a toaster that didn't work very well and took forever to make any toast at all. A waffle maker that a guest told me not to use because it didn't work. The fruit was precut up and soaking in sugar syrup. Not tasty. Aside from the breakfast we enjoyed our stay and would return.

I recommend taking Highway 1A and driving through the little towns of Chemainus (stop here if you have time, otherwise admire the many murals from your car), Saltair, and Ladysmith. 1A will take you to the Duke Point Ferry Terminal, or you can spend some time in Nanaimo and find the best Nanaimo bar (look up the Nanaimo Bar Trail and you'll find many suggestions for who sells them). Situated on a windy finger of land that shares Jack Point and Biggs Park, the ferry terminal itself is well organized and about 20+ lanes across. Buy your tickets online to save time and make sure you get to there an hour before departure. At the window, you can pay your fare or the agent will scan the prepaid barcode In your email. You are then assigned a lane. You can wait in your car or get out and walk around, grab a snack, use the restroom, take in the view, or pose with two orca statues flanking the walkway to the terminal. On the day we were there, two tents were set up with local arts and crafts. A large digital sign gave sailing information and PSAs about COVID safety. When it was time for everyone to board, an announcement was made asking us to return to our vehicles. About 10 or 15 minutes later, attendants guided us to the awaiting ferry. Everything was orderly and well organized, and I can't wait to come back.

This hostel is not suitable for big and heavy suitcases, because there's no elevator, but when you're with a backpack/ smaller suitcase it works just fine. For your convenience there is a bar right around the corner, and the super market and a drugstore/ banks are just about a 10 minute walk away.

Going to Victoria we flew a single-engine plane, which may have been older, but was so exciting. This trip took longer so we had more time to savor the beauty of the water and islands speckled throughout the landscape. On the way back, we flew a twin-engine which was faster but almost as exciting. The representatives were a little officious but they could not damper the excitement of these flights. We booked the flights and a tour of the Capilano bridge through Harbour Air and could not have been more delighted.

The ride around Lasqueti is very pleasant with a couple of beaches to stop at and relatively car free hilly dirt roads . There is a hotel /pub at fakes bay where the ferry lands You need a mountain bike or a hybrid or gravel bike with 32 mm plus tires . Suspension is useful for the sweeping corners that are gravel covered with washboard in some spots. I called Greg at Oceanside outfitters about one minute after closing to try and get a bike for the 9:45 ferry the next day. Greg kindly offered to open the store at 8:30 the next morning and I made the ferry with no problem. He also let me drop the bike off after shop closing time , at his beach rental spot. A really nice guy and I appreciate the above and beyond service and the great bike as well. Stefan
