I would normally just walk away from an unpleasant, high-strung experience. Humans are complex creatures. What I champion in a world of polarity, control and reactivity, is more communication and receptivity, which may have been lacking on this day at this office and with Dr. Sands. I too take accountability for any miscommunication. Upon arriving I quickly gave the latest information to the hygienist (she did my cleaning last time). I informed her that I sometimes take the prophylaxis but that I did not have it at this time. I briefly explained that I just returned from a long journey out of the country and that my insurance had changed and that I have just secured an appointment with a new Dr. to get a script. With a newer diagnosis of LAFB, I was unsure if it was a big deal or not to forgo the prophylaxis. I thought that the DDS could give me a script for it (because you can take it within two hours) but was informed otherwise at the front desk. It was my choice and responsibility to medicate or not. She left the room for a long bit and then returned to continue with the cleaning. There was no discussion on the prophylaxis. I let it go. I'd done it without before. She then said that she needed to take 6 new x-rays. I said that I would sign off on that because I was planning on doing my onlay in the next few months and didn't want to do the x-rays twice. I have never followed the prescribed x-ray protocol and only did it when necessary. She then disappeared. After about 10 long minutes, Dr. Sands came in and introduced herself. She then asked what my fear was around x-rays. I shared with her that it was not a fear but that I did not want to do unnecessary and extra procedures and then do it again in the next couple of months before my onlay. I wanted to focus on the one tooth and upcoming procedure . As most DDS's, she gave me the usual lecture on x-rays, protocols and legalities. I am aware. I get it. I have signed off before. We were focusing on one tooth. I just wanted consideration around the scenario of the big picture and upcoming procedure. She then said it was now too late to do the cleaning and that I would have to come back. But that we could not rebook until they took all six x-rays and did the exam. Breath. Was she really going to give me an ultimatum? At this point, I just wanted to move on. It was a cleaning. I wanted to move on and book my onlay. So I trusted and relented. I was glad to have Dr. Sands do the exam as it was her practice. The hygienist was now going to take the six new X-rays. Two in the front, which wasn't even in question or a problem. Protocol. While I applaud Doctors and Nurses, I feel that the medical establishment is often over stepping. I have experienced and seen plenty. I require my boundaries, rights and sensibilities to be honored and respected where reasonable. The hygienist took the first x-ray rather quickly, and then the second. I could not see her face as she had a mask on the whole time, but I could feel her nervousness. As she pulled out the second X-ray, I took a breath and said, please, just do it right the first time. Well, as I was saying this the second x-ray came up on the screen distorted. Bad timing. Another breath. I said, the same thing happened with my mammogram. I at no time was upset or disrespectful. I was calm, only disappointed. She ran out of the room, triggered. I could hear her asking if someone else could take the x-ray because there was an overlay. I heard Dr. Sands asked if there was an overlay on my teeth. No. A few minutes later Dr. Sands comes into the room and tells me to leave her practice as I don't want to abide by her protocols and that I was "mean" to her hygienist and upset her. Wow. She goes to grab my purse and says that she will walk me to the door! I am surprised by this reactivity. I am calm and watching the whole scenario. I tell her that there is no need for her to walk me to door. I take my things and tell the hygienist that I'm sorry that she got nervous. I leave. What a fiasco. The times before when I had my cleaning, Dr Sands was not in the office. The hygienist felt calm and confident. The energy was completely different this time. It's great that Dr Sands is protective of her employees. It's great that she holds a high bar to her ideals. It's also unfortunate that her reactivity was way over the mark on that day. That she read the room wrong, and that she read me wrong. "Mean" is not something I have ever been described as. Honestly, if anyone deserves an apology, it would be to me. I felt unheard, unaccommodated, condescended to and well, scapegoated. As a woman close to my pier group I would consider more from Dr. Sands. I would hope that she would consider her part in handling this and take accountability for this human foible. No defenses needed, but an acknowledgment and fair response would be up to par. read more

After 14 years of good care, I'm never seeing Dr. Sands again. Because, after multiple appointments where the WRONG SHADE on 3 veneers was discovered but not installed, SHE ACTUALLY ASKED ME if I wanted to buy 3 more veneers to match the wrong shade, so they would all match. She thought I would pay an extra $4500 for 3 totally unnecessary veneers, just to fix her mistakes. There's no denying the quality of care dropped off precipitously. It was also shocking Dr. Sands assumed she could remedy such a mistake on her customer's dime. There were also multiple denials (from her specifically) inquiring whether the mistake was from her office, or the labs. It was her office, of course. The lab confirmed it when I went there, and an employee in her office confirmed it. The right thing to do would be to acknowledge these mistakes, and the unprofessionalism, and apologize. She won't. This is what hubris looks like. There is no forgetting the lack of patient protection I felt. She did not hesitate to offer me 3 completely unnecessary veneers when it suited her narrative. Healthcare providers should hold themselves to a higher ethical standard than asking patients to pay for their mistakes. Draw your own conclusions. Before scheduling a first consultation about composite veneers, I asked direct questions in the email to determine if it was even worth driving so far and spending an entire day on it. The avoidance of providing even an approximate price range already felt shady, and I should have trusted my intuition. I a have been seeing Dr. Jamie Sands for many years and am so happy to have met her. Besides her incredible warmth and care that she and her staff provide, she is an extremely dentist or more what I would call an artist of the mouth. Years ago she said something that I will never forget. "If your teeth are not taken care of, they will really age you" and not that I have not been diligent, but pay a lot more attention to the cosmetic part of my smile. Recently I had an accident and had a chip to my front tooth. Many dentists would have suggested several veneers but she likes to keep intact if she can and actually repair existing teeth. Although it took some time, she was able to restore my smile as if it never happened and even make it stronger. Dr. Jamie Sands is by far the best dentist I have ever seen by light years, and I have seen dozens. I needed a massive amount of work done and consulted with multiple top dentists in LA. Dr. Sands was the only dentist I've ever seen who had compassion for me and immediately understood how I had ended up in this situation. She was also the only dentist I saw who believed in my ability to take proper care of my teeth going forward, and as such, saved as much of my natural teeth as possible. Whereas every single other dentist I saw just wanted to put crowns on every molar. I have spent the last 8 months in and out of Dr. Sands office and as of today, my work is finally complete. She never tried to "up sell" me on anything and never tried to push anything cosmetic. In fact, her treatment plan was more affordable than any of the other dentists' because of her approach to save as much of each molar as she could. Someone looking to make a quick buck would have put a crown on every tooth. I cannot emphasize enough the high level of care and compassion Dr. Sands brings to every visit. Dr. Sands is quite possibly the only medical professional (not just dentist) that I trust completely and totally to act in my best interest, and in accordance with the science that she is beyond an expert in. She is a perfectionist in each aspect of what she does and you can glean that from every last inch of the office, her staff, and how it is run. When I was on IV sedatives (an anesthesiologist was brought in) for the bulk of my restoration work, I had been worried I would say something crazy under the sedation. As her staff knows well by this point, I am very anxious, high-stress, and deal with PTSD, which they always handled with the utmost compassion. When on the IV sedation, after Dr. Sands came in to begin the major work, I said "Is that Dr. Sands? I loooove Dr. Sands." And that's really all there is to say on that. I came here for a dental consultation and was so disappointed with this place! Upon first look, it's a super nice office- clean with great customer service. However, they took up at least 3 hours of my day trying to just sell me products. Before I even was diagnosed with anything, they made me sit through a commercial trying to sell me Invisalign. Then when the dentist finally came, she tried to tell me about *all* the problems I had. I got a second opinion and the dentist (who I know personally and trust) said that most of the problems she said I had were not issues and he did it for me in 2 appointments and with about $1500 less (after insurance)! She had originally said I needed crowns and everything when all I needed were some fillings. This place is trying to take all of your money- do not come here. read more

As a lifelong tooth decay sufferer, (thanks genetics) I have had only a handful of dentists in my lifetime. Two dentists between age 5 to 18 and then two additional dentists as an adult. Jamie Sands is my third dentist as an adult, and hopefully my last dentist for a lifetime. None of the dentists I have ever had as an adult were able to diagnose my adult teeth the way Dr. Jamie Sands could. The fix to pain, decay, and discomfort was always a filling. It was always just more fillings and drilling. First silver fillings. (Ugly) then white fillings. After fillings are taken out and refilled and then sit for over a decade, they wear down. Why could no other dentist tell me this?! Dr. Sands was able to take me as a new patient in early 2017. Her office does a complete consultation to new patients including x rays and photographs. The session with Dr. Sands identified 8 teeth that needed fillings out and restorative work in to preserve them. This year, I went in around 6 sessions and replaced all of my old, worn down, fillings with really nice porcelain crowns or onlays. This was necessary to preserve the tooth. All 8 of them. A filled tooth left alone will be in danger of either an eventual extraction or root canal if left untreated. I am happy I have been going to Dr. Sands for almost a year and trust her and her staff. For those with dental anxiety. Being a patient of Dr Sands will put you at ease. As I am a patient with dental anxiety due to bad past experiences....Dr. Sands and her entire office have been comforting and assure me I'm in good hands each and every time I am so anxious. The costs of all procedures are clear ahead of appointments so there are no surprises and they do accept many different types of dental insurance. Dr. Sands is also known to do really wonderful cosmetic work such as veneers. I plan on going to her in 2018 to rebuild my smile and remove the old bonding on the front teeth as well as eliminate my white calcification spots Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Sands to adults who are seeking a new dentist. I also recommend her entire staff for all your dental needs. My husband and I have been going there for all of our cleanings, dental work, night guard (for him) and retainers for me. I take good care of my teeth. The hygienist at my visit at Dr. Sands office even said something along the lines of, "Wow! Your teeth are in such wonderful shape! You obviously take great care of them!" Now, I realize a hygienist is not a dentist, but this set off additional alarm bells later. When I saw Dr. Sands later that day, she told me that I had FIVE new cavities since my last visit, and I should schedule their repair ASAP when I checked out. FIVE? I have long felt this place takes advantage of their patients: "oh you NEED this additional $75 treatment as well as your usual cleaning, you should really spend $5500 on Invisalign with us to fix that one tooth, etc." Now, I truly believe the doctor performs these "additional" treatments because she believes they are in the patient's best interest. However, as someone who came from a small town, what Dr. Sands considers to be the "patient's best interest is not what I would call a "conservative" approach to dentistry. I never returned to this office. Cut to months later when I am now at a new dentist for my cleaning. The very-esteemed dentist there now says that I POSSIBLY have ONE cavity, but that we'll simply keep our eye on it and see if gets arrested with proper dental care. I mentioned that my previous dentist found five cavities, and the dentist was very taken aback by the claim. I've now been at my new dentist quite awhile, still taking excellent care of my teeth, and have not needed one, much less FIVE cavities, fixed yet. read more

The experience was so terrifying the first time with her, it took me years to get up the nerve to change then. She then REFUSED to fix them because i was too nervous the first time , she blamed the ceramist for the poor shape and color yet SHE cemented them in! I moved into the neighborhood recently and decided to take a chance on a local dentist. Dr. Sands office is walking distance to my home and the office decor is delectable. Whilst having my initial visit, in place of having to stare at dry wall, with a mundane photo of a paint-by-numbers sailboat portrait, I had the pleasure of watching the trees sway against the cloudless sky, and the hummingbirds feeding: sounds silly but it is Relaxing. The walls are glass, her decor modern, and her staff is both dedicated and amicable. During the initial dental cleaning Rhina, the dental hygienist gave me all sorts of wonderful preventative advice since I had a bit of tartar build-up. That was awesome. She had the patience to answer my litany of questions. I always have questions. You never learn, if you don't ask, right? :) I'll be back guys. read more

I visited Dr. Sands at her valley village location. The first time I visited I saw Dr. Jin, who was ok. However, he recommended I replace old mercury fillings but did not tell me there was a cavity there. Forward to today when the dental hygienist said I have one and that it what "amalgam decay" meant! Ok?! They hygienist has been completely unprofessional since my last visit where she diagnosed me with jaw clenching and TMJ and strongly recommended Botox injections. Only, to have Dr. Sands come in and see me for one minute without examining me and recommend $5000 Invisalign instead! Problem:she isn't an orthodontist, so there is no way I'm getting braces there w/o a second opinion and s full exam. I don't care how many weekends she spent getting a side certification on Invisalign to increase the revenue in her practice! They also recommend teeth cleaning more than twice a year even though they know dental insurance only covers twice a year. Yeah, they expect you to pay out of pocket for the other cleanings. Finally, when I questioned the Invisalign vs traditional braces, the dental hygienist said I could go to the national orthodontist web page or read their journal articles. Hmm, seems to me like she shouldn't be diagnosing as she is NOT the doctor or trying to intimidate me by recommend reading that most people would be able to read. I'm pretty sure I will not be returning to this office. Update: went to a new Honest and ethical dentist. My husband and I both see Dr. Sands and I must say that she is the BEST dentist that I ever had. She is beyond meticulous with great bedside manners. She is very knowledgeable and is always up to date on what is emerging within her field. She is a cosmetic dentist, not a basic dentist. There is a difference! If you allow her to do her magic and take the advice she gives you, you will obtain the best results possible and have that perfect smile that you so desire. Dr. Sands is great but the whole experience is highly professional and the attention to detail makes visiting this dental office exceed expectations. In the past I have followed a particular hygienist from dentist to dentist as the dentists have either moved or retired. This time I went for location and discovered that dental care doesn't have to be painful, time consuming, or filled with costly surprises. Appointments are respected, staff are always pleasant, technicians are simply good at what they do and prices are clearly discussed ahead of time. Perhaps most importantly, the hygienists are trained to be thorough in their work but minimize discomfort to the patient. Dr Sands was SUPER knowledgeable, super willing to arrange her schedule to solve our situation and FULLY SOLUTION oriented. She thinks in solutions - options and education.
