    Amazing film!
    Morgan C.

I simply adore the Jane Pickens Theatre - it's truly one of Newport's hidden gems! Built in the 1840's, it was actually originally an Episcopal church and then had a more sordid turn of use as a vaudeville theatre at the turn of the century! Nowadays, it's an art house movie theatre that shows everything from documentaries to indie films, and even theatre productions that are streamed live from London! It's a great way to take in a show without the inconvenience of hopping on a plane! While I've seen tons of great movies here, I got the chance to see "The Dead Don't Die" tonight, which was no exception! Without giving away too much of the plot, it's a wild zombie themed romp with an all star ensemble cast headed by Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Adam Driver that pays homage to tropes of classic horror movies and isn't at all shy about smashing the fourth wall to pieces. Just my cup of tea! I wish they would show more films like this, because their offerings at least in the last year have tended more toward the esoteric. There's a time and a place for everything, but let us have fun once in a while! The best part of seeing a movie at the Pickens is the option to purchase a cocktail or alcoholic beverage from the sophisticated snack bar, which also features an array of next-level movie snacks along with the classics. The alcohol offerings are mostly made with spirits produced right on the island, like the Dark n' Stormy made with Thomas Tew rum. If you want to keep your snacking local as well, check out the Anchor Toffee, a flavorful sweet delight made with fresh Newport sea salt. As others have noted, the theatre can get a bit chilly, so do bring a sweater. Other than that, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy never disappoints!!!

Why hasn't anybody reviewed this lovely theater in ten years? Lots of changes and improvements make it a jewel.

My favorite movie theater in RI. Great space, comfy seats, excellent movies and the best snacks, including gourmet chocolate and wine.

She seems to enjoy talking down to grown adults and forgets the money we pay helps the rebuilding of the Fort. She has a habit of threatening to REMOVE you if you don't submit to her condescending strict rules. e thought it was an off night for her when we went last year and tried to do it again last wknd, but NOPE. She's just ignorant. Sorry, I go to these things to have a good time, not to be enrolled in a derelict boot camp. Adults be warned: your money isnt worth as much as the TOO YOUNG children that seem to direct the rules of this place. Dont get caught swearing in lines or in the Tunnels of Terror (ummmm sometimes a natural reaction to being scared) or yet again, YOU WILL BE REMOVED. Not enough volunteer actors, though no fault of the event staff, leaves you feeling like a regular tour at night would be sufficient. Went through the tunnels and 3D experience with no surprises. Give us a lantern and let us actually enjoy ourselves without the pompous hosts thank you. This place has so much potential to actually make ALOT more money for the cause, but its not gonna happen when you let a bitter old lady and arrogant staff treat GUESTS like they are worthless. STAY AWAY!!

He said to me, "It's... all... girls." Panic set in. I convinced him to give it a try. When I picked him up later that day, he said, "Best... camp... ever!" That carried on for the full three weeks, concluding with an incredible play where the students created a whole musical from scratch... plot, music, words, sets, choreography - everything. (What 10-year-old learns Shakespeare?!?!) Again, it was the best five weeks of his life. His younger brother just became eligible and did the "techies" version. That's where they create the sets, run the lighting, sound, and all those behind the scene things. He's hooked as well and will be signing up next year.

It was the perfect excuse to get dressed up and try something new, with a twist of course... delicious cocktails. The Edgar Allan Poe experience itself was really well done. The actors were fantastic and fully committed to their roles. I loved the costumes and the dramatic personalities. It made the whole evening feel immersive without being over the top. I'm actually at the museum about once a month for meetings, so it was fun to see the space used in a completely different way. My only wish is that we had a little more time to wander and take in the current exhibits, because it's such a beautiful setting. My one real downside is parking. With the recent changes, it has become pretty difficult to find a spot that is easy to get in and out of, especially during a New England winter. Definitely something to plan ahead for. Overall, such a unique and memorable night. I would absolutely recommend grabbing your friends and checking this out if it comes back around.

There are actually 2 buildings and both were beautiful with some stunning pieces. Small, but lovely, and still somehow incredibly grand. I didn't get to go into the main/large room because they were installing a new exhibit but there is a good amount to see beyond that one space anyway. The gift shop was small and no one was manning it so I didn't get to buy a souveneir but I enjoyed walking around the history and art that was everywhere. Also worth mentioning, but they had some good pieces by woman artists (c. 1940s) which I feel can be extremely hard to find. For this museum, the women tended to be friends of the original owners or at least ran in the same circles and some were even founding members of the museum's art association. Always so nice to see women's art (and some were my favorite pieces!) That being said, most of the art was very high brow white upper class with an emphasis on orientalism, which I feel simply encourages conversations about the zeitgeist of the early 1900s. I did really enjoy the pieces they had from Edward Mitchell Bannister which were on loan from the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society. There was also a members juried exhibit which brought some breath into the traditionalist art space. Well worth the visit!!
