Amazing place for hair color!!! I've always been extremely picky with my hair -- either in terms of price or quality. In a city where you can find a hair salon on every block, its hard to pick a place to be truly comfortable and happy with. After doing extensive research using Allure magazine's salon finder, I had narrowed it down to a couple of places worth checking out. And then I used a secondary means of filtering out those results -- Citysearch. But my work was not done yet.... I had the addresses of two salons so I decided to check both of the places out and pick the one that intimidates me the least. The next day, I booked an appointment at Janet Rufin's parlor. The name of the stylist who was going to be coloring my hair was Karen, and back onto citysearch I went, "Ctrl+f" -ing for her name. I was relieved to find that all the reviews which mentioned Karen labeled her as a super-cool amazing colorist, so i was able to breathe a sigh of relief! Saturday morning, I arrived on the dot for my appointment. The receptionists were very nice. You fill out this survey they give all the newbies, and without further delay, I was whisked into the changing rooms (where they had robes in 3 different sizes, perfectly organized) and sat down. The salon itself is small, containing maybe about 7 caramel leather chairs. The interior design was very minimal, but warm and cozy due to the warm palette of browns. Within minutes, Karen came over and introduced herself -- a girl with style and edge! (I've always been weary of stylists whose own styles do not reflect what they may be capable of) She's super patient and takes her time with your hair. You never feel like you're being rushed (but make sure you allow plenty of time if your coloring process is more complicated. mine took 3 hours). In the end, my hair was perfect. It was a dark multi-dimensional brown, the highlights were subtle, fine, and added the perfect amount of shine to my hair. Amanda had dried my hair smooth and super-straight without using a flat iron. I felt like I had Jennifer Aniston's hair.. dipped in chocolate. ---------- edit: i've been a loyal customer of this salon for quite some time now. my hair has changed from that chocolate brown to a sandy brown with blonde highlights.. love it! karen is a super talented colorist and everyone who works here is soo extremely nice. the last time i went, i stopped by around 5pm on a friday night, just trying my luck to see if karen would be free for a walk-in, and she was! karen, her assistant christine, and the receptionist all stayed late (they close at 8pm, but everyone had left around 7pm because it was a slow night) to do my hair. i didn't feel rushed, and my color came out gorgeous as always. now how many stylists will stay late on a friday night to accommodate a last minute 3-hour color appointment?! and christine, the girl who dried and styled my hair, she was great too, taking her time to make sure every last strand was straight and in place. I can't believe it's taken me this long to write this review! AH! Well I dyed my hair for the first time at Janet's and may I say- AWESOME experience. The colorist was on point- personable, a conversationalist, and knew exactly what she was doing. She was also VERY excited about dying my hair... "virgin" hair is a colorists' dream apparently. haha. I wish I knew what color she used in my hair because I LOVE it and have gotten many compliments. My haircut (done by Janet herself) was great and she was well-informed. Knew exactly what kind of cut would be good for my hair type (curly) and promised not to hack. I hate stylists who are scissor happy. Thankfully she was NOT. My only complaint would be the blow-out; it lacked. I've had MUCH better blow-outs but in their defense it was raining outside. Yikes! Hair nightmare, right? I met Janet in The Container Store one day and we suddenly started talking about our hair! One week later I ended up in her salon and I fell in love with how my hair turned out! For people that know me, I'm never truly satisfied with any of my haircuts or colorings.. but Janet definitely broke that chain! I came across this place on Yelp, and decided to book an appointment for a Haircut and bayalage. I went to Crysdian and OMG he is absolutely amazing!!I am very particular when it comes down to my hair, Crysdian listened to everything I asked for and he seemed to really study my hair and face to give me the perfect cut. Crysdian has an amazing personality, he was very nice, gentle and professional, he made my visit a fun one. I love my cut and color, looks absolutely amazing! Crysdian is my new go-to hair stylist, I highly recommend him to everyone! The salon itself is very nice, clean, and prices are reasonable. read more

How do I know when I have gotten a great haircut? When it still looks great after I wash out the styling. I'm considering on putting Maggie P. on speed dial. The salon is located on the second floor, of Irving Pl. If yo know the area then you know this is a lovely location, a few blocks away from the easily accessible Union Sq. but without all the madness. Janet Rufin's Parlor is a great space with huge windows and wonderful staff. Everyone I met were very pleasant and courteous. My appointment was with Maggie P. OMG, I'm so glad I found her. She really knows her craft. She listens to you, will analyze the look you want and explain what will work and why. There was great communication, you know what is going on at every step. I love that in the end she explained to me what she did exactly with my haircut, so I could get the look and shape I (have always) wanted. Overall, it was a great experience and I will be back. P.S. Bought a Groupon deal and got a Brazilian Blowout. First of all Janet is by far the best hairdresser ever! Book with her! Shes so cute, sweet, and personable She knows exactly what she is doing, and she makes your hair look like you are a movie star. Really glad that I found this place on Groupon. Last summer I got a Brazilian Blowout and was so impressed with the results that I knew I had to get one this summer. I went to Janet Rufin's Parlor because I had purchased a Groupon here for a Brazilian Blowout hoping that I would love it just as much as I did from Salon AKS. Unfortunately, the whole experience and the results were not up to par. My stylist, Natalia, was very nice and knowledgeable even though she has only been styling hair for 2 years. The salon itself was was fine, nothing special. I would have expected to be offered at least some water before sitting there for 3 hours, but that did not happen. I think the worst part was that the stylist next to me was rambling on and on about herself and making uncomfortable comments to her client. As for the actual results, I felt as though my hair was less frizzy than normal, but I think that the last time that I had a Brazilian Blowout my hair was softer and shiner. Although I was satisfied with everything at Janet Rufin's Parlor, I was not impressed with my hair and the overall experience therefore will probably not return. read more

Horrible experience. A dog was walking around the salon the entire time which gave the salon a foul odor. The presence of this canine seemed unhygienic. I had scheduled an up-do and makeup application. The up-do took about 15-20 minutes. I was not happy with the outcome. I decided to forego the makeup application based on the results of the up-do. I was initially going to be charged $120. I let the stylist know my displeasure with the service rendered. She dropped the price to $60. On my walk back to my apartment a piece of hair came undone. Obviously it was a rush job with a high price tag. Will never come back here. read more

Love, Love, Love this place! I have gone to three different salons in NYC to get the Ombre highlights and had no succes, Everyone made a mess of my head. I pretty much gave up and hated my hair. So I ended up buying a groupon a haircut, highlights and a pravanna smoothing treatment to give it one last try. It was the BEST decision I ever made. Jeffery the sytlist is heaven sent. I showed him a picture of what I wanted and he DID it! I now love my hair! He also can CUT! I got a great layers and smooth locks with the pravana! They got them selves a regular. I can't not stop raving about Janet Rufin Palor. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. First of all, I had no trouble getting an appointment. The receptionist was helpful and super pleasant on the phone. On the day of my appointment, I called to inform them that I was running 10mins late. To my surprise, the receptionist didn't give me any attitude and thanked me instead for letting them know. That's a rare thing in NYC. I had the pleasure of having Allyson as my stylist. She was so friendly and professional from the minute she introduced herself to the end of the appt. Prior to receiving the Armada Style e-Cure, I had a very thorough consultation. Not only was Allyson a good listener, she was able to execute. In addition, Allyson was extremely meticulous with making sure both sides of my hair are even. I'm extremely happy with my haircut which consist of side bangs and long layers. If you are in need of a hair stylist like I was, look no further than Allyson at Janet Rufin Palor. I LOVEJanet Rufin's Parlor! Came here by chance with a Groupon nearly two years ago to try out a Keratin treatment. Janet herself quickly took a look at my hair and suggested that my hair would take to the Pravana treatment much better than the Keratin......and still honored the Groupon. Two years later, I am a regular customer and still get the same treatment. All of their stylists that have cut or treated my hair are fantastic - I've had cuts, highlights and the Pravana treatment, and even got blunt bangs for the first time here. I just had my hair done by Crysdian a few days ago and I am thrilled with the results! My hair was damaged with faded rainbow highlights but Crysdian really went above and beyond to save my hair! He spent so much time making sure I was happy with my transformation. Not only was the color correction executed wonderfully, he cut about 2 inches off and straightened it (blow dry AND flat iron). All of my friends are shocked at how healthy and shiny my hair looks now! He did a great job giving color recommendations that would look nice with my skin tone and eye color. I trusted him completely! Everyone at the salon is very friendly! I always get nervous with Manhattan salons that I'll encounter snobby attitudes, but not here! It's a very intimate, laid back environment. I was offered something to drink multiple times and felt very comfortable during both my consultation and appointment. This place is amazeballs. I came here with a Groupon for a conditioning treatment + cut back in May. I was booked with Eugene, who took his time talking to me about what I wanted and what worked best for my hair. I'm usually the quiet type when it comes to talking to stylists, but we connected over music, art, yoga, etc. Eugene rules. He took his time cutting and styling. At the end, he let my hair air dry which I appreciated because usually once I'm home and have washed my hair, I can't recreate what magical thing a stylist did that one time. It looked great when I left and I knew this is how it would look every time I washed and air dried my hair. It's now 4 months since I got the cut and I'm STILL getting compliments on my hair. Eugene (and I'm sure everyone else) at Janet Rufin's is a miracle worker and I would be more than happy to splurge at their salon again, even without the Groupon. read more

I went in last week with a groupon for cut and highlights. Immediately Janet was very professional and informed me that for what I wanted I would need full highlights (Groupon was for partial) and how much extra Id have to pay which I appreciated. Janet did my color and Allyson did my cut, and both were so friendly and clearly experts- I was so happy and they gave me the same care and attention they give customers paying in full which is rare. A week later I realized my highlights were a bit to blond in the front and since I was getting married in a week they squeezed me in immediately and Janet did my color correction, which was minor, no questions asked! This place is AMAZING! I received the Pravana treatment from Allyson, and it was a fantastic experience. This was the first time I have ever done anything to my hair. I loved my curls, but I was finding them to be hard to manage recently and I was unhappy more often than not. Allyson spent 20 minutes explaining the treatment, and answering my 100s of questions. I didnt feel rushed at all. We started with a wash, cut, and then the Pravana treatment. She explained every step of the process, and managed my expectations as to what would happen over the next 3 months of having the treatment. I could not be happier. My hair looks fabulous and is so easy to manage. I use minimal product (vs the 4+ gels and creams i was putting in my hair every day). I am always so scared when I try a new salon, and I'm extremely fussy about my hair, so making the appointment was not an easy task for me. That being said, I am so happy I won't have to find a new salon in the city ever again because I loved the treatment I got here. I used Eugene and during the consultation, I was definitely not the most helpful patron. He was extremely patient and came up with ideas, despite how fussy I was. When we decided on a hairstyle, he told me step by step everything that he was going to do. I have never had a hairstylist so meticulous in my life, or spend so much time on my relatively easy to cut hair. He was extremely friendly but not overbearingly so and gave me a cut that I am thrilled with. The salon is cozy and warm, and has a great aura to it. Everyone there was friendly (another stylist was chiming in on our conversation and making me crack up) and extremely appreciative of the clients. I had one of the last appointments of the day and did not feel rushed at all to get out. I am always nervous to try a new salon but Janet Rufin's was a pleasant surprise. I was looking for a place for single hair color and googled away. Janet Rufin's had overall great reviews. My first appointment was great. I saw Jennifer who convinced me that highlights were not appropriate for me and that I should stick with a single process treatment. This surprised me since the salon stood to make a lot more money from highlights. Jennifer did a great job and I continued to see her until she recently left the salon. Last week I went back to Janet Rufin's and saw Stacey. She was also great. Super friendly and takes her time to make sure her client is satisfied with the results. Overall the salon is super comfortable and all the stylists are laid back and friendly. In addition to beverages there are always snacks - cheese and crackers, cake, bagels, etc. (depending on the time of the day). The resident dog named Sugar keeps everyone company. I am officially a Brazilian Blowout convert! I can't say enough how much I love this treatment... I came in with curly, frizzy and poofy hair and walked out with straight and sleek hair as if I had spent an hour blow drying and straightening it. After I washed my hair that day my hair dried straight and smooth... I had to keep checking in the mirror to make sure it was actually happening. I used my Groupon that I purchased forever ago, so with tip I paid $200 for the service, when it normally costs $250-300 w/o tip. They had an "extended deal" going on at the salon so I bought my next Brazilian Blowout for $150! Jeff did an amazing job, and he is so sweet and fun to chat with. Janet takes great pride in making you look your best. She is friendly and professional. The salon has 2 chairs, but due to social distancing, she is only having one client in at a time. She keeps everything sterile and I felt comfortable that my health was not compromised in any way. I always get many compliments on my hair even after it has grown in for a long time in between cuts. I have very short hair and she cut it into a style that suits my face perfectly. I also have her do my color and highlights. Both look very natural. I used a Groupon for a cut/blow dry and had a good experience with Maggie. They were able to fit me in for an appointment earlier in the day, which was nice since I've found some places wont take you before noon. The location is cute, on the second floor with great big windows. The haircut itself was fine, not the best, not the worst and although they did try and talk me into buying an extra conditioning treatment, Maggie didn't push when I said no thanks. I really liked that they had a little private area in the back to put on/take off your own smock with a mirror to check out your hair before and after the cut without the hair stylist breathing over your shoulder. Plus the little room had a lint roller to get any stray hairs off before you left the salon. Double thumbs up for that! Overall a solid 4 star experience. read more

I wish I could give more than five stars. Before I go into the actual services of the salon, I have to say - my brother got married in the city on Saturday and the Tuesday before we were left without someone to do our hair. I did a quick yelp search of the area near our hotel (the W at union square) and found that janet rufin's was only 3 blocks away, and well reviewed. I called, they agreed to open early for us to come in, Janet was there and Jeffrey, they offered us COFFEE and it was 8am. EIGHT. IN THE MORNING. Planned four days beforehand!!! Even if they sucked I'd still give them stars. BUT THEY DIDN'T!!! THEY WERE AMAZING!! Janet did a blowout for my mom who has very short hair, and she was incredibly responsive to all my mom's requests (sort of vague like, "a litttttle more spiky" and "just like that thing you did before"). Jeffrey handled my updo with a remarkable amount of making sure I was getting what I want (which was - "whatever") and taking artistic license when I kept assuring him that's what I wanted him to do. I looked amazing. And somehow he didn't pin my hair to within an inch of its life! I'm not sure how, but it stayed all day and only came down once I got caught in a massive downpour (even then, it retained its curl and shape - it was crazy). My sister got a "Kardashian-esq" blowout, so a blowout with curls at the bottom, from Jeffrey and she was thrilled. It also lasted the entire day in humid Manhattan, and even retained a lot of its straight post-2am showers. I was amazed. They dealt with us on a stressful day with aplomb, Jeffrey was HILARIOUS and Janet was so gracious and told us stories from her own life. They were kind, and funny, and sweet, and fleeeeexible and SO TALENTED! I couldn't have been happier. It started off a crazy day on a fantastic note, and I would highly recommend them to anyone for any sort of styling in the future. (Two last notes. 1) I wish I could come back for a cut but I moved from the city to DC a few years ago. When I return permanently, you can bet your bippy I'll be here. 2) I know yelp says "pricey" but I dunno, for Manhattan? I would say normal, at least for hair styling.) read more

Decent haircut. Rufin was definitely not friendly towards me. I got the feeling my clothes weren't designer enough for her. She asked me in a strange tone...."so...um...do you work around here?" I told her yes, that I worked at a foster care agency. "Oh...okay." Weird. I just got a very weird vibe from her. My stylist was nice enough, and did a decent job. I have to say that Janet did get very friendly when I was about to leave. For straightening only: I've been to JRP three times now with various Groupon/LivingSocial deals for straightening, and I have yet to be disappointed. The staff is kind, professional and punctual, the space, located on Irving Street (my favorite street!) is clean and gorgeous, with huge windows and tons of light, and I've been pleased with the straightening results each time. JRP phased out use of any Brazilian Blowout-type treatments with high levels of keratin, as stylists were apparently having health issues from being around the products (yikes). They now offer three treatments involving either very little or no keratin. The stylists are always extremely up front about the differences between the treatments, their respective effectiveness, etc, and take the time to walk you through your various options. read more

Last year I purchased a Groupon to try this place out and chose a stylist based on some reviews on here. While she was really nice the cut was not at all what I asked for and I was really unhappy. When I called to let them know they were very understanding and accommodating and suggested I come in to see a different stylist to have it fixed. They suggested I see Allyson (who came in early to accommodate my schedule) and I'm so glad they did! Not only was she able to fix my previous cut but she actually ended up styling my hair in a way that I loved. She explained there were some areas that would just have to grow in but overall I was really happy with how much she was able to fix it. Fast forward a few months and I just went back to see her again for another great cut. The style had grown out really nicely but it was getting too long. She listened to all my requests and I didn't worry for a second while she cut 4+ inches off. On top of that, she's really lovely to talk with and I genuinely enjoyed getting to spend time with her while she worked her magic. The vibe of the salon is great and part of the reason I came back. It's very low key and has lots of big windows overlooking Gramercy Park. It's small and cozy and definitely does not have the judgement factor like some NYC salons. There is a dog that's there- I don't mind, as I'm a dog owner but I could see that being a turn off for some people. I'd highly suggest going to see Allyson! I came to the parlor for the 1st time last Friday, using a groupon ($50 worth of $100). I booked for a full highlight with the apprentice program to keep the cost as low as possible, knowing it could be risky. Well, I don't regret it ! Natalia took care of me. We did highlights and lowlights in a coppery tone, very flattering. It ended up costing $25 more and it took 3 hours to do it, but all worth it ! She did a great job, even thought she's has been styling for only a couple of years. She did a better job than any experienced stylist here in the Suburbs (oops, I am being bitchy here)... I will make sure to book next apt with her again as she really understood what I wanted. She is very friendly too and offered me a glass of Malbec ... I will keep my review short and to the point. My haircut and color was expensive, but great. I would have gone back, however my experience went sour at the till. I paid, and by accident the receptionist took my payment twice. I realized later that week and called the salon for a refund. It took a month and several phone calls to get my money back. Many excuses about the 'bank being slow', etc. I had to demand the repayment - even when the salon acknowledged the error. Furthermore, in all of this, Janet offered weak apologizes and never once took the initiative to offer any incentive for me to return. A salon charging more than $100 for a simple trim should have the decency to consider this. On principal alone, I won't be returning. read more

Small and modest salon near Union Square. Got a blowout with an apprentice here. Leah was the instructor. She was strict (and even a bit impatient?), but not that helpful with the apprentice. She told the apprentice what to do with my hair after it was washed, and then didn't come to check the progress until it was all done. Granted she was busy with another actual client at the same time, and she did come to check the end result. Still, it felt weird that Leah didn't come to check in with the apprentice at least ones during the process. read more

Randy reinvented my hair color and I'm thrilled! Be warned the salon decor is modest but the skills and formulations are world class excellent. I scheduled for a free consultation. Randy spent as much time as needed talking to me and I never felt pressured or rushed. She expertly discussed my hair color, what I wanted to achieve and how to go about it.
