Very busy little deli in Santee. Limited seating inside, in front of the deli, and they also have patio seating located behind the deli. We were told while there that they were going to expand their dining area as they took over what used to be a taco shop located next door. They are located in a small shopping area so parking is no hassle. I would have given them 5 stars except my mom found a hair in her corned beef hash plate. Everything was going good until the hair in the meal just threw the whole experience off!!! Of course we brought it to a waiters attention. He apologized for the mishap and offered to replace the plate for a new one. We denied the offer and just asked for it to be taken off the bill. They were happy to do so. At that point moms was inspecting everything from toast to fresh fruit etc. My son ordered the Egg & Sausage plate which came with a side of fresh fruit (his plate was fine...no hair found). However, this page says that they close at 2:30 and it turns out they close at 2, Very disappointed that they don't have their hours on the window / door so I would not have made a special trip to pick up something to take home. Indoor and outdoor seating in the strip mall that contains the library, a coffee shop, bookstore etc. surprisingly cute for a strip mall restaurant. I had a waffle and egg combo breakfast. The waffle was EXCELLENT with whipped butter and quality maple syrup. Eggs over easy and nice, crispy bacon. My brother had biscuits and gravy that were way better than average...but not amazing. It'll be a sad day for me when my daughter graduates from college and move back home to Hawaii. Why? Because I won't have an excuse to come to Santee and come here. One of the many things I look for when I at a restaurant is the customer service. Excellent here! Very friendly and personable staffs and very fast. Very attentive to you as customers and they treat you like family, even for first timers like me. Next, the ambiance of the restaurant is important for me. Love it here. It's a small, family style restaurant and they have tables in the front and the back of the restaurant. Very very clean. No complaint in this area. And now the food. So far I've only had the corn beef hash breakfast and the veggie breakfast wrap. Very very good. Thumbs up! The wrap is my favorite. It's huge and full of goodness. Very tasty and perfect with the salsa sauce they give you. I have to try other things in the menu so this part of my review is bias to only what I've eaten so far. Janet's has been around for quite some time in east county San Diego. My first experience with Janet's was up in Alpine at the Montana cafe, so generally I was very happy to see one in Santee when I was driving by for work. The restaurant its self is quite small compared to the other Janet's I've been to, they do have a large out door seating area though, which is nice since its a great area for breakfast outside. We came into Janet's around 730ish, so they had been open for not long and the place was already filling up on Saturday morning. Our waitress seated us right away and was very quick and prompt to bring us our drinks. The coffee here wasn't really anything special, but it was better than diner quality coffee. My friend and I decided to go with omelettes, it felt like an egg type of morning. The hash browns couldn't have been done better, crispy on top yet soft under neath, perfect hash browns. Hey East County!! This is the place to be before 2:30 pm!!!!!!! I am so relieved to find a marvelous breakfast restaurant in East County that isn't IHOP or Denny's! The service is ON POINT and the food is excellent! This is a small restaurant with patio and indoor seating in a cute plaza off Mission Gorge. They serve breakfast and select lunch foods like sandwiches and salads. I got the 2 eggs any style and my man got the bacon and eggs. Both came with a side of either hash browns or fruit. Then your choice of pancakes, biscuits, toast, or.... something else I cannot remember. At first, I thought it was crazy to pay $8.45 for 2 eggs and 2 sides. But at the end of the meal, I felt like I had eaten $20 worth of food! The side portions are pretty generous and the food is so good, you end up getting your bang for your buck. This place actually makes a pretty good Crepe. It's funny how tings have a way of working out because I'm only in the neighborhood to workout at the nearby 24HR Fitness Gym. But before I was about to workout, a funny thing happened...I got hungry. So looking on my phone (on the yelp page of course) I found Janet's Cafe and Deli. What sold me on the Yelp Phone site was the picture of the Crepes, so I'm telling myself, "that's what I want for breakfast!" The people that work here kinda make you feel at home in a way and when I didn't see the Crepes on their menu board, the folks at Janet's rest assured me that they can make the order...even if it wasn't on the menu board. Here's what I thought of the Crepe: This dish was pretty big and pretty filling. As I cut into the middle of the crepe (with my fork,) out of the center came a creamy and sweet custard that had a way of melting in my mouth. This crepe was one of the finer crepes I've ever had (...yes...even better than the I-HOP's crepes.) The mixer of Black Berries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Blueberries and Bananas on top of the crepe make this breakfast dish a pure delight! And even though I was full after a pretty good sized breakfast, I actually found myself wanting more (That's how good it was...at least in my own opinion.) I can not beleive this place got a one star rating... I was going to go with a solid four stars but will upgrade to five for a bit of an offset. Tunamelt special was huge, great and fresh! Onion rings!! One of the best taste ever! and a dessert of carrot cake... Can you say leftovers? Half the cake and half the sammy for dinner tonight! Best part was we were there with a 2 year old. One of the best and most filling breakfasts I've ever had. Cant wait to come back again. My husband and I were in the area and wanted to try someplace new so we quickly pulled up our yelp app and Janets based on all their awesome reviews. We arrived and about 25 people were already waiting. We were seated in about 10 minutes. I ordered the Country sausage biscuits and gravy. MMMmmmm The biscuits were some of the biggest I've seen. My biscuit was cut in half with a sausage patty and a poached egg covered in delicious gravy. The biscuit was perfection. My plate came with hashbrowns as well, which had a great flavor on their own. My husband ordered the country fried steak and chose a biscuit as his side. My husband is a pretty big guy and normally has no problem finishing his food. This was one of the seldom times he was maxed out and could not eat everything. While waiting for our food we seen the Carmel Pecan Bread Pudding. Seating is so tight you can reach out and touch the table next to you. The food is decent the service is good. The bacon was big, but not crispy, and had a weird flavor. The French Vanilla creamer gave the coffee a rancid taste. This meal made me sick for over 24 hours. I would not recommend it to anyone. The portions are big and the service is good. There is a nice patio out back and outdoor seating in front, as well. But the meal was $15 plus tip, so it definitely wasn't the experience I hoped for. Even though service can be spotty due to the way they manage their waitlist, it doesn't take away from how great the food is and how big the portions are. This is a great place for breakfast with the family on a Sunday or really for any day of week. We were told 30 minutes until they would have a table open for us which was expected because it was Father's Day however, we must have gotten super lucky because we only waited 10 min! Never been to this place before and saw the reviews on Yelp and they were pretty high. And I can see why. As soon as I walked into this place they welcomed be and said to sit wherever I'd like. The inside is a little small but they do have a back patio for you to enjoy your meal in some good weather. The staff here is great! So nice and welcoming. I had different servers come to me and take my order/bring my food/refill my coffee and check up on me to see if I needed anything else. No complaints whatsoever about the service. My food came out in a very timely manner. Didn't have to wait no more than 10 minutes. Not even 5 minutes if that. This is a nice little spot for breakfast! Janet's has by far the best pies. I ordered a coconut cream and chocolate peanut butter. They were both so good. My favorite pie is coconut cream and it has been years since I had a really good one. 2nd visit to JANET'S: My Reuben sandwich was overpriced and just ok. There wasn't enough sauerkraut, and they forgot the dressing. It was my second visit to Janet's, and I'm beginning to see a pattern...the sandwiches that I like are all over $10 at Janet's, and I can find an equal or better sandwich someplace else for less money. It was also disappointing to notice that my granddaughter's kid's meal came with the crinkle style frozen fries, not home-made fries. I will try someplace new for lunch the next time I'm in the area. I was happier the first time, but that was partly because I love discovering new places. 1st Visit to JANET'S: Great onion rings accompanied my chicken salad croissant sandwich for $10.95. I enjoyed my crunchy onion rings dipped in ranch dressing. My little granddaughter preferred to eat the crunchy and pick out the onions. There were other choices of sides, if you don't like the crunchy or the onions. (-; We ordered my granddaughter a breakfast with eggs, pancakes, and sausage. She took a few bites and then declared "Nanny's food is better!" So I shared my onion rings and my chicken salad with her. My daughter enjoyed a tasty wrap. On the daily specials menu, there was a home-made chicken pot pie which I'd like to try next time. It comes with dessert for around $11 or $12. We also shared a slice of house-made coconut cream pie. This wasn't my favorite. It was just ok. It was a very generous slice, so we took some home. CONCLUSION: My overall summary after two visits is that while Janet's food is pretty good, it's not amazing. Three of us had lunch on two separate visits at Janet's, so I got to try a variety of things. Janet's is a bit too expensive, and I think I can find a better value in the area for lunch. If I end up paying over $40 for lunch for 3 people, I want it to be very special...gourmet or all home-made. So after coming here a few times it's time to write a review. Janet's is a small cafe with around 10 tables to eat at(I didn't count them so don't quote me on that). There isn't a bar area or an area to stand and eat so you'll have to put your name on the list and wait it out. The wait is usually quoted around 15 minutes (based on going on Sunday's around 10:30-11) but odds are you'll be waiting longer than that. Luckily they are creating a seating area out back (patio style) that should be opening up within a few weeks. The service here seems to be a hit or miss. Sometimes the service is fast and great and other times is slow and mediocre. It's the same staff every time I come so you would think there would be more consistency with the service one way or the other. It is what it is but the dude with the tattoos needs to take some acting classes so that he can appear like he doesn't wish he was dead rather than working. On to the most important thing, the FOOD! Everything here that I've gotten has been great but the portions seems to vary from time to time. Sometimes your pancakes are the size of the plate and other times it's the size of an iHop pancake (dinky winky). I'm a big fan of eggs benedict and while the country eggs benedict doesn't have hollandaise sauce, it sure is delicious! It comes with nice thick biscuit halves, two sausage patties, two poached eggs, all doused in country gravy :)))) Oh and you also get a side of hash browns or fruit, blah blah blah. Throw some Cholula on that shit and dig in!!! The country fried steak is also good, also doused in country gravy :))))) All in all if you're looking for a good breakfast that will last you through the day then definitely hit this place up. But definitely be prepared to wait anywhere between 15-30 minutes for a table. But don't worry, you can watch the guy with the tattoos look like he's slowly die with every passing minute. read more
