Decisions, decisions, decisions. I've been coming here more often than I really need to but not really because I want to. It's more a need to. The seniors like it. Especially the Old Bean, and it's proximal. Why does he like it so much? Breakfast. Scratching your head? I'm not, because I live in his reality. This is a bakery for cakes, pasties, and other HK style sweet snacks. Even the so-called savory items in here are slightly sweet, the wiener buns are an example. As the Old Bean is wont to do, this is what he consumes for breakfast. Pastries and cake, not congee. Although he'll go out for congee, but at home, it's cake. Chestnut cake, at 9:30AM, along with robusta bean pre ground coffee, aka MJB, out of a jumbo-sized tin or plastic tub, from a percolator, after a rolling boil of 20 minutes. Basically, a combination of bitter melon and sulfuric acid is the end product, generously seasoned with 6 heaping teaspoons of sugar, and a bit of milk is the way he likes it. This is not hyperbole. It's a gruesome brew in the morning, enough to kill the appetite and palate of a starving alligator or any reptillian in the Florida everglades. So this is why I'm here. It's my living certainty. I do eat stuff from here every now and then but not on any regular basis. I order B-Day cakes from here for occasions also. It's what the seniors are accustomed to. Helpful staff. This Maxim's stocks the standard selection of sweet and savoury Chinese pastries. A nice touch here is the hot steamed buns. Affordable prices. It looks like they also have cheap coffee and tea, but cheap in quality, not just price. Cash only. There are some tables inside or some picnic tables on the nearby closed street. The place looks a little dated and dim. I got a vegetarian steamed bun and a fruit cocktail cake. The steamed bun, kept nice and warm, was soft and the veggies inside were savoury and crunchy. I'd recommend this. It was my first time trying a Chinese fruit cocktail cake - I always would see them at Chinese bakeries and be tempted - so I have no basis for comparison on other fruit cocktail cakes, but I enjoyed the flavour. The cake was light with lots of fruit in the filling. It seemed a bit sweeter than the Asian cakes I'm used to. The sweeter cake and frosting in combination with the fruit cocktail, which is itself sweetened, made this a sweeter dessert than I would've liked. I'd be open to trying them again if it was in my neighbourhood, but it wouldn't be my first choice for Chinese desserts just based off this one cake. read more

They accept only cash or debit card. If a credit card is acceptable, probably 4 star bakery. Each bread and pasty are in the plastic bag and cashier will peel off glue part and seal them. I stopped by for something savory, and BBQ pork bun was so delicious. It was like soft version steamed pork bao. Very fluffy. Their cakes looked well made and had nice decorations and still affordable. Each $3.5 ish. read more

This is more of a 2.5 stars for food plus a 0.5 star for price. Strictly per Yelp's description, the food is "Meh. I've experienced better.", noticeably below Kam Do and St. Germain food wise. But price wise, they are solidly lower than either of those places. If your pocket book is limited, this is a worthy place to go. Of the items I tried: Red bean pastries were the best. A thick dollop of red bean fill the middle. The pastry layers are only "ok". There are discernable layers but taste flat nonetheless. Wife pastries 老婆餅 are solid too. The fillings are thick and tasty with bits of the wintermelon chunks. Thumbs up. Century Egg pastry was the biggest failure at a zero star level. A tiny chunk of century egg surrounded by unrecognizable interior, should be lotus seed paste but tasted more like doughy nothingness. Do not buy this one. I suspect the bun items are pretty good though I didn't have any. The Maxim brand is well known in Hong Kong. I think this is an actual branch based on the logo. Worthy of a revisit. read more

We stopped at this bakery by accident since we parked the car in front. I was very skeptical about the place just because I've never been to and the not very good experience in the past with some Chinese bakeries. When I stepped inside of the store, I was actually impressed with cleanliness and open space. I didn't see any crumbs or fingerprints on the showcase. Pastries were displayed neatly inside the cases along with the clear explanation of what they are and how much they are. Most of the time, I don't buy a lot in Chinese bakeries because they are not very appealing. But I bought about 10 pastries. Total was $13. I wanted more but stayed with 10 since I already bought a bunch of Japanese pastries across the street before coming in. I love bread! My husband and I tried taro bread, sesame ball, raisin twist and an egg custard next morning, and were impressed. They are surprisingly so good! Will come back for sure. read more

Maxim's has been a Vancouver mainstay for decades and continues to be my go-to place for fresh Chinese pastries. Regardless of the location, their pastries are consistently high quality and fresh. I love their Cocktail Buns and Pineapple Buns. Their Egg Tarts are also decent. The Fraser Location has a large floor plan, with several self-serve display cases. This location has a terrific selection of cakes as well. read more

The servers here today were rude asf. I came to pick up the cake I ordered and they were like we don't have it. Then I find it myself and then they think I'm stealing someone. Else's cake that had what I asked them to write on it. Then they have the audacity to talk shhhh about me in Chinese to each other. We were on Fraser Street recently, "killing a little time" with some browsing of stores and shops during a couple of morning walkabouts, before heading to where we had chosen to do lunch. There was no way we could just walk past Maxim's Bakery - sights within definitely beckoned us in for a closer look. We found the venue (this shop, and its 'brand' was totally new to us), such a delight to check out. The offerings and presentations looked so good, and so appealing in the nicely-arranged shelving, and in such a cheery, bright, clean, and neat environment. This visit to Maxim's Bakery provided a fun, first walk-around to check out the shop's set up and various offerings. And it ended with daughter catching some good-looking bbq pork buns, and egg custard tarts (two of which turned out to be much-enjoyed, tasty treats for us!). Ordered a custom cake for a baby shower. It turned out great and was ready on time. It wasnt the exact shade as the picture i showed them, so be sure to specify when you order a cake. The cake was delicious, the sweetness of the cake was very subtle and guests loved it. I bought this 8" cake for $27. I accidentally shifted the cake when carrying it home but it was peefect when i got it. The service however could have been much more friendly. Also, they charged me an extra $3 just because i brought them a picture, which is a scam. read more

* Dan tat pastry! * I spotted this new location of Maxim's. They seem to be popping up all over the place in the Vancouver area....This is a very clean and new location. The dan tat ($1) looked good, and I just had to try. The layers of pastry dough were flaky and crispy - just the way I like! In fact one of the best I've had in Vancouver. The custard was less so unfortunately. It was a bit too sweet and not eggy enough for my taste. I also like the top to be a bit more brown - particularly for a Portuguese style one. But it wasn't terrible. And did I mention that wonderful pastry crust? Now if we could just get the custard up to the same level this would be a five star dan tat! The place is clean, bright and spacious for eating. The food/buns are fresh and good prices. Some buns are smaller than what you would get at other bakeries like Pine House and Saint Germain but thats why the prices are cheaper. Three small coconut buns for $1.50 rather than 1 coconut bun at Saint Germain for $1.20. I rather have smaller portions than 1 big bun. The mini cakes are really good. They have bigger cakes on display for you to buy. If you preorder a day before, you get 10% off. The staff are friendly and service is quick. They ask if you if you want it all in a box or separated into smaller resealable bags. I usually get the box so I can recycle it. It is cash only so make sure you have some. They don't take debit or credit. They've been open for about 6 months now and so far, they've been consistent in quality and service. read more

Nice little bakery on Fraser. There's a free parking lot in the back, but have to walk around, past the Bank of Montreal, to the front door to enter. Things are fairly cheap, but the size of things have shrunk a lot though. Egg tarts are $0.75 each, but are kind of tiny. You can get a discount if you buy more/multiples on some items. They also have one of my favs, Curry Beef Turnovers which are hard to find. They have a good selection of cakes and other pastries as well. The staff is also friendly. It's a brand spanking new location. Service is quick (cash counter service only), food is fresh and well presented along with the modern interior decor. However for the price, their portions are tiny and I'll have to explain because it's not just the size, it's the weight as well. If you've ever baked bread, you'll know that the longer it ferments the larger the size. You could patt it down and make a smaller loaf but the weight will stay the same. Maxim puffs up their bread with minimal dough, the result- medium sized bread with small size dough. Sure you may like this cake like fluffy texture but you'll never get full nor get your money's worth. If you've tasted breads made in HongKong- the origin of this style of pastry you'll understand. Meanwhile I'll stick to better proportioned YET cheaper shops like: NewTown bakery or Ying Wah Bakery. Pinehouse by the way is very similar to Maxim's size and texture. I just ate two buns and feel like I didn't eat anything at all =( . The Richmond location is the same and a friend has had the same "small portion" comment so as good quality control will have it all their branches will be alike. read more

I ordered a char siu bao (pork bun) and gai May bao (mini coconut bun). The coconut bun was really good. The char siu bao was okay but the char siu tasted much different than I'm used to. All the items were reasonably priced and the cakes looked good too. I'd come back again. read more
