I discovered Jantz recently because my bestfriend and I were looking for a place to meet up after she moved. We had a great first experience there and we just had another memorable one today. There is a good variety on the lunch menu and we enjoyed our meal on the patio with pies to end. Employees are friendly and I can tell that the staff follows social distancing protocols the best they can with the narrow spatial layout of the restaurant, which is very much appreciated. I like that the restaurant offers a reward program where you can get points as a patron and earn yourself a free whole pie as a "Welcome" gift. Also something unique in the Central Valley are the good selection of gluten free baked goods that they have at the counter! I haven't had the chance to try any of them, but very cool to provide those options! I visited once in the morning and once shortly after noon, and both times, the restaurant was filled with diners. Today's visit was just so-so.. I went in with a co-worker and the place was not very busy but it seemed we had to wait longer than needed. We sat for about 10 mins before our waitress came and took our order. When our food came it was decent. My omelette was solid. I do wish the fruit that came with it would of had a better mix it was mostly honeydew. My co-workers potatoes were not cooked enough. Our waitress was ok after the delay. Hopefully our next visit will be back to the 4-5 star range. read more

Jantz Cafe is a super cute small and friendly restaurant. All the cheese's they use in their food come from local farms nearby. Their coffee is local as well! The food is always delicious. The Cinnamon French Toast is super delicious! It taste just like a cinnamon roll but much lighter and fluffy. The macaroni salad they serve is also super super good! Normally I don't like macaroni salad but the one here is super light and it doesn't have an over powering amount of mayo. The breakfast items as well with lunch and dinner is all super delicious. The prices are very reasonable as well. They also have a student menu. The desserts are great as well. They have a variety of pies, cakes, and cookies. Yes, it's true. Jantz has come to Merced, where Piano Caffe used to be! If you don't already know about Jantz, it's a family-owned bakery based in Atwater that also serves some meals. They expanded into Mariposa, and now they're in Merced. I visited today, and it looks like the menu (which is up on blackboards above the register, and I'm not sure if they're going to eventually print menus) includes breakfast and lunch, in addition to their famous pies and other desserts, like muffins, cookies, and some other stuff. They are only open on weekdays. You walk in, and there's usually two (indistinguishable) lines: the first one is for people picking up a take out order, and the second is for ordering your food. Make sure you're in the right line! You get a table number and they bring you your food. I had a veggie sandwich, and I only wish I had better understood exactly what would be on it (in terms of condiments), so next time I'll ask at the register. I'm not a big fan of mayo, and the cheese used seemed overly processed. It is also not clear if the optional side is included in the price of a sandwich. The lemonade was delicious, with bits of lemon pulp! They also have a child's menu that is affordable (under $5 for a sandwich, side, drink, and cookie). They have only been open for a little bit, and things still seemed a bit hectic behind the counter (too many people, it seemed), so I understand that the child didn't end up with their cookie, and my order of pie to go got lost in the craziness. Came here in the evening time. It was my two boys and I, we were the only ones, which was kind of nice. Our waitress was nice, great service. Got our food right away and I enjoyed it. Only cons: 1. No music, a lil too quiet. Since my boys and I were the only ones, it was kind of awkward noise, could of used some music. 2. Kraft mac-n-cheese for my son's dinner. I came here 2 enjoy a meal (which I did) + my son as well. If I would have known they served the kind of mac-n-cheese that you buy in the box from the grocery store. Jantz Merced was finally open for in dining service after months of offering take out during the pandemic. My daughter and I went there this past Weds. (6/10) to finally have lunch with our good friends. Jantz has always been clean and friendly, and this day was no different. They were set up for social distancing. We were seated outside on the patio. All employees wore their masks. This did not interfere with our excellent service we received. We had our salad and a wrap and enjoyed our company. Our waitress was amazing. Split our bill into 4 different tabs with no problem. She was kind, courteous, and truly accommodating to all of our needs while respecting our space. Of course we all had our free slice of pie, which she was gracious enough to remind us. It was a truly a well needed nice visit with friends and a breath of fresh air. Jantz serves "home cooked" meals. Everything is so fresh, wholesome, delicious, and tasty. Local produce, fresh baked goods, and local beef. The food in their breakfast is lacking any kind of flavor. The sausage is extremely greasy, literally gives me throat spasms. The breakfast *looks* appealing, but again, is lacking in flavor. The biscuits and gravy taste like a terrible blend of their greasy sausage, butter and flour as if it was composed without any additional salt or seasoning. I don't like writing negative reviews, but this is meant to be helpful to the owners. 1) the cook needs to learn how to make soft, fresh biscuits and creamy (not watery with bits of flour) gravy or just don't offer it on the menu--sent it back twice! 2) staff could be heard chatting about their social lives during our entire meal, and became more annoying when waiting for them to bring us our check 3) person responsible for seating customers practically scolded us for waiting to be seated at a table, and basically said she'd get around to us when she had a minute, what? 4) sorry, but sourdough "toast" isn't a thick slice of soft bread that has a vague hint of sour--very disappointing. Spent $40 for two people for a basic breaksfast and felt ripped off by the service and the food. Will not be back, found two better places in town, Waffle House and Scott's Diner. read more
