Ok, so when I checked things out online, I was planning on having sushi. That all changed when I got a closer look at the menu. Yes, we did get one maki, but explored so much more. Everything was excellent! The drinks were delicious if a little bit different from what I expected. Pesco? Yes! Teriyaki Shrmip? Double yes! Steak shrimp and calamari dish? Triple yes! White or fried rice? Get both. They were perfectly prepared. It's been a long times since I have so thoroughly enjoyed EVERYTHING that I've eaten during a meal. read more

The food was quite good. Only complaint was that there were no soba noodles in my chicken yakisoba dish...bummer, I was really looking forward to the buckwheat taste when I ordered it. Very nice outdoor setting. Service was inexperienced, however. The kind of faux pas of bringing the food out before the sauce that goes with it and obligating you to the awkward table silence before starting to eat....or having to flag somebody down to order another drink.... Absolutely loved this place! Funny thing is that myself and those who came to the restaurant were supposed to go to another restaurant but they lacked in customer service even before we were seated so then Japu was it after a quick Yelp search! We came to Japu to celebrate my mom's friend's birthday. Just a few reasons why this place gets 5 stars: 1) my mom's friend brought her own cake and we were trying to see where to place it. One of the servers who worked there - grabbed a small square table placed the cake there as well as the balloons we brought without us even asking- and enthusiastically at that! 2) the appetizers were amazing! And so were the alcoholic drinks according to the ladies I went with. I don't drink and went with the pineapple, mint and ginger drink and it was amazing! The tilapia entree I had was ok- but other than that everything was exactly to my liking. 3) the servers were attentive! 4) when it came time to sing happy birthday in true Dominican style they played a Dembow birthday song and made my moms friend feel sooo special . We came here on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, so that probably impacted our experience, but we were generally disappointed. The restaurant was empty of patrons when we arrived at 6:30pm; they were out of all but 2 of the sushi rolls, and of a few other things on the Peruvian side-- waitress said it was because they were going on vacation the next day. This of course limited out options so perhaps we should not have stayed. We had the Chicken Causa appetizer, which we thought was delicious. With respect to drinks, my Mai Tai was disappointing and not very fruity or with much flavor; the Pisco Sour was excellent. We both ordered the Chaufa; one steak and one mixto. Both were heaps of rice with little in the way of vegetables; the steak on both was tough, chewy, and tasteless; the Chaufa Mixto had 4 shrimp, which were fine; and very sparse tiny nuggets of chicken-- so both dishes consisted mainly of a large mound of rice with a bit of protein. The server was generally inattentive, despite the restaurant being largely empty when we were there; with the staff more interested in animatedly chatting with a friend that had popped in. We may well have caught them on an off-night, but perhaps it would have been better they had not opened that evening. It certainly turned us off from going back; if we're going to spend $140+ on an appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks with tip, we will do it elsewhere. read more

Three of us ate here the other night, tried a couple of different appetizers, two main courses and desert. Everything was tasty and would certainly order again - thought there were a lot of other things I would like to try when I go back. I've only had traditional Peruvian out in So. Cal a few times before this, and Japu is meant to be Japan/Peruvian fusion (read Wikipedia if you're not familiar with the history) and I think they nailed it there. Service was prompt and friendly, and looking around the room I would say the other diners were having a similar positive experience too. My only suggestion is they expand the beer list to include a couple of local breweries as an option. The parking lot next to the restaurant has spaces reserved/marked for parking. It's great having a somewhat unique restaurant choice in the area and we're planning to go back. read more

These people commenting about how dangerous Lawrence is (do you leave your iPad on your seat in an unlocked car?), or how this should be in another location (Yes, let's pack the whole restaurant and move it directly infront of your house...), or how they should cater to the 'Lawrence population' (what, Latino? poor? #behonest) are wrong. Just wrong. There's a large population coming up here from Boston looking for affordable housing. There are too many Latino restaurants (I said it) with no distinct variation. This is exactly where it should be, and I welcome them. I've been there twice: once with a Bostonian friend who wanted to try something new, and once with co-workers. The service is great. The staff are very knowledgeable about their menu and will make suggestions based on your tastes. They offered yucca fry samples which were delicious (that SAUCE, though). There are standouts on their menu that should be repeated, such as the Pineapple-Ginger-Mint shake, the Lomo Saltado, and the Poor Man's Steak. The tastes are familiar to a Latino (there's plantain in the shrimp tempura and some of the sushi), but because they're Japanese-Peruvian (which, in South America, is a WHOLE category of food), they have such a delicious spin that, even if you've grown up with Dominican food (COUGH*me*COUGH), it feels like it's been given a new point of view. There is plenty of parking and shared with the mill lofts in the back area. It's an easy walk from the Lawrence T stop. There are some small storefronts across the street and on the other side of the Duck Bridge, there's the New Balance Factory. Go eat and get yourself a new dress with matching sneakers. New spot in Lawrence. Great service and food. I tried the teriyaki salmon and my husband the beef which he says was very flavorful. For appetizers we tried the yucca with yellow pepper sauce. We had a specialty drink a pineapple mint ginger mix which was perfectly balanced ed and refreshing. I want to go back and try the sushi and noodles or ceviche. They have free parking too. It did get a lil loud but it was because a large party came in to celebrate a birthday. Must try. read more

Let's start with the appetizers! We had both gyoza and eby maduro tempura. The gyoza was alright, we agreed that we have had better. The eby maduro tempura however was out of this world! Definitely try this if you ever step foot in the restaurant. It is like no other food before and the sauce was amazing. So amazing that we dipped ougyoza in it making the gyoza much more enjoyable! Onto the entrees! We had the Chaufa mixto and the teriyaki salmon. The chaufu mixto was very good. The flavor was there, the rice was so good! I wish there was a little more protein in there cause the ratio to chicken steak and shrimp was off. Surprisingly there was more shrimp and steak than chicken. But other than that no complaints. I added a little bit of soy sauce to top it off and I was very happy with this meal. The teriyaki salmon was a treat to look at! The salmon itself was amazing, one of the best salmon I've had in a while. The only down fall if this dish was the rice. We had fried rice and it just wasn't up to par to the salmon nor the rice that was in the chaufu. One thing I would love to mention is value! The amount of food you get for what you pay is a good amount, especially for the quality of the food very nice aspect of this restaurant. Service was good okay in a Friday night. I wish our waiter was just a little more attentive. It's a very nice looking place, the music was good and it wasn't too loud that you can't have a conversation. Went there on Sunday afternoon and it was pretty busy and lively. Definitely family friendly. The wait staff were very kind and attentive. We ordered the Sapporo sushi roll-very rich, cheesy and sweet, covered in crunchy Panko. I've never had one like it! It was good, definitely unique. My family also ordered two noodle dishes, the yakisoba and saltado and while they were both good, had fresh ingredients, they were just way too salty. We will definitely try them again and skip the noodle dishes. I hope they expand their sushi menu and cut back on the salt a bit. read more

I met some friends at Japu restaurant in Lawrence after hearing about how good the food was there. I'll start by saying it was easy to get to and had plenty of parking. The restaurant itself is in an old mill building and is updated to a modern sophisticated upscale but casual atmosphere. Wow, this place does not disappoint. The service was great and the food was outstanding. Our group ordered a few appetizers along with our main courses and everything was fresh and delicious. My husband and I live an hour away but we are already planning our next visit there. I never write restaurant reviews but I had to share my experience there. I had ordered the chicken yakisoba via takeout. I was told there would be a 30 minute wait, so I was pleasantly surprised when I was called and told it was ready after less than 15 minutes. Parking wasn't clear, and I'm fairly certain I had to use an unrelated lot nearby, but I was in and out so it wasn't really an issue. The food itself was very good, even though it's not something I would normally order. The sauce was sweet and tangy, maybe a little too sweet my my personal preference, but that's no fault of the restaurant. I will come back again and try something else. read more

Food is good but the service is TERRIBLE! Our waitress was the absolute worst!! I decided to celebrate my sons birthday with family at Japu. When we arrived they weren't ready although Arturo stated the space would be reserved all day. Everything was going well until my 10 year old picky niece decides to order a specific sushi roll. Her exact words were Avocado, shrimp and cucumber. Ana our waitress brought it out but decided to add cream cheese in it. We kindly asked her to make it the way we asked and then her whole attitude change. She said "that's the Japu way" she said "what do you want me to do about it". She then clarified we would HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SUSHI ROLL SHE GOT WRONG. Which we replied, no because we were specific. Ana went crying to her mother who is an assistant manager to which she called her husband the manager (Arturo). Arturo decides to interrupt my event and state my family is being rude and he won't tolerate that. We confronted Ana infront of her mom and Ana was screaming and yelling saying "you can't go to a restaurant and just because you don't like the food you can't return it" we responded it's not that we did not like it - it's that you added cream cheese to a specific order. Ana became very emotional to which we just said bye take off the tip and we will NEVER give you business again. Ana get help and learn that the customer is always right. Very impressed by this restaurant! Went in today not expecting much and I was blown away. At first finding the restaurant is a little hard cause the sign isn't too big and there's no parking lot but there's street parking. I walked in and immediately got attended and was pleasantly introduced to the restaurant and their specialities. I skimmed through the menu and was intrigued by all the fusion food, they all sounded so delicious! I decided to just try a staple Peruvian dish called Lomo Saltado. The waitress was very friendly and helpful and attentive. I really haven't seen service like that in months! As I waited for my food which wasn't long I noticed the beautiful attention to detail in the decorations and the music they were playing which was Spanish Rock from the 80s which really set the mood. Once my dish arrived I was shocked because it didn't look like my regular Lomo Saltado and a lot smaller so I was hesitant. Let me tell you guys, this dish blew me away! The chef definitely knows what he/she is doing. They perfectly mixed peppers and another vegetable to the onions and tomatoes that already go with the steak tips. The steak tips had so much flavor and were cooked perfectly, they were so good that I had to cut the tips smaller so I won't eat it all at once! Haha. The rice was delicious and very fresh. The fries had the perfect texture and weren't soggy which is the best. I definitely enjoyed lunch today and will be back to try more dishes and drinks! read more

Went there for the first time with a group of friends. Food was ok, definitely generous portion if you are a big eater with I am not. Service was very friendly. One thing they forgot to tell their patrons is that they include their service charge in your bill. We were not aware of that. Unfortunately, we noticed that a day later after reviewing the bill and wondering why was so high. We discovered we have added an extra tip to the whole amount! Just a small recommendation, please tell your patrons that the service charge would be included in their bill. We did call and they told us that their menu states service charge would be included. Took my family there on Friday night and expected it to be packed at 6:30. It was not busy at all! This was our first experience and let me say it was awesome! The waiter told us a lot of customers are staying away from Chinese restaurants due to the corona virus, which is just silly. I mean, lucky for us because we got piping hot food, quick seating and amazing service. The portions are huge! We had enough for two more meals. The edamame was the best I have had in a long time. Not a traditional sushi restaurant, with a fun balance of Peruvian food and drinks with a little Japanese twist. All of the food, including the cow hearts, were flavorful, perfectly cooked, and a true delight. We look forward to coming back to try even more. And, service can make or break a restaurant with good food, but You will NOT be disappointed with the service! I went to Japu with family. I got a sushi and said "wow, I've never tasted a sushi like that its almost like a chimichanga how its fried." The female server said "if you dont like it the door is right there." Tried this place for the 1st time and was pleasantly surprised! We got the Mixto Cerviche - which was super good and refreshing - a mix of shrimp and some white fish and some legumes. I got the mar and Tierra - which was a combo of steak shrimp and octopus - also good. Others got Lodo de pobre and the yaki soba and we're pleased. Only note is that if you are looking for traditional sushi, Japú does not have it but has an interesting take on sushi with a Peruvian twist of cooked meats not all of them fish. Don't be bashful about saying where you want to sit rather than let them seat you at a small table in the middle of the room. Don't be scared homey!!....good spacing for privacy.
