First time to eat here, and the last! The prices were out of touch for what we actually were served. My friend got really sick shortly after we ate. FOOD POISONING was the answer at the urgent care we went to. The sushi rolls were tasteless, the soup was basically water with a little bullion cube in it, the salad was at least a three bite salid. We didn't get what we ordered but chose to eat what we received after waiting and waiting, wanted to eat sometime that day. Would be better off eating a frozen microwave dinner. read more

Hidden gem, a small hole in the wall. Friendly wait staff, food is always amazing and consistent. I read other reviews where they messed up to go orders but I order to go frequently and they are always on point. Never had a problem and price is always the same. The food is good but meat portions are ridiculously small. I ordered the steak and chicken hibachi and literally they hardly put any meat. It's nothing but rice and noodles. I really don't understand why this place has such high reviews. I was visiting a friend in the area and I suggested we come here. We walked in and the staff was nice and suggested we seat ourselves. We ordered water with a plate of lemonS and the waitress brought us 1 a piece. When we asked for more, she asked us how many slices we each wanted lol. It was so strange because I've never had a server ask me that. Anyway, we both got the special that comes with soup, salad and 2 rolls. We also both got a side of fried rice. Our rice was pretty cold so we asked for it to be heated up or some fresh one if it wasn't any trouble. We got back some hot, extra crispy rice. It was like they popped it in the microwave and forgot it in there. The sushi was alright. It wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special. The water is disgusting, btw. Damn near undrinkable. Japan Express is more than a "chinese takeout", but less than a "Benihana-type restaurant". It is located in a most unlikely location, in a little strip mall w/Winn Dixie etc. But don't let the location scare you off because it's all about the food. Primarily japanese dishes are offered fusing into chinese style (such as lo mein noodles), the food was very good, freshly prepared, tasty and good portions. You've got to try this hole in the wall eatery because the food is outstanding. Also, service was very good with friendly and informative young folk as servers. Good, cheap, and fast. I've been trying every sushi place in the area and finally found something I like. Fresh fish, proportionately made rolls (not to much rice), fairly cheap, and fast. I had Philly, Alaska, and spicy tuna. I subbed in fresh salmon as opposed to smoked (not a fan). They were delicious. But not sure if I got charged extra for the sub. When in Tavares, there's only about 2 known Japanese places to go, being Kiku's and Lampu. But sometimes I don't want to crammed with a bunch of people to a table.. So Japan express was a totally new experience. It's super convenient for quick service although there's no hibachi tables in front of you, the quality and taste of the food is the same if not better. On my first visit, I ordered two rolls. One yellow tail roll and one Ninja roll. I asked for no mayo on my Ninja roll but it was presented to me with mayo anyway. They were kind enough to re-do it but charged me for two Ninja rolls on my tab. I didn't realize it until it was too late. My yellow tail roll had way too much rice on it for such little yellow tail. You've had better (even though the prices were great)... the chicken and steak "speacial" wasn't tender at all and that "cum" sauce... OMGosh, the "cum" sauce was n-a-s-t-y. My b.f. wouldn't eat any of his food (reg. chicken teriyaki, likely) as his meal had the sauce all over it after one bite. Presentation was pretty, but, that sauce... My family member enjoyed her hot soup and I enjoyed the salad before dinner came out, by the way. The staff- however- were very friendly and attentive. Facility was clean and the b.r. was, too. Excellent! Came here because of the yelp reviews. I had the tempura shrimp rice bowl with a house salad. My husband had the crunchy crab and shrimp tempura sushi. All were excellent and fresh.
