Sapporo + hot sake to open. The Japanese bar snacks were a cool addition. The chopsticks are very cheap. Usually a sign that they "just don't care". I was told this place was opened and owned by Japanese companies for Japanese customers and clients. We shall see. I ordered Anagi, unagi, yellow tail, ebi tempura, California roll closing with AMA Ebi. My favorite. Hoshizaki coolers are a good sign. No Asahi :( Miso was hot with fresh green onion, as it should be. Ebi tempura. Delicious. California with tobiko. Fresh pickled ginger. Excellent. This is REAL Japanese eel. None of tha fake US catfish stuff here. Anago is very strong. Delicious. VERY good sushi! And now for the amaebi. I ate one piece before I remembered to take a picture. Delicious! Not quite the clear fresh I had hoped but it is Findlay, OH. No heads which is disappointing but again, where are we. This is a fantastic place and I will be back soon. read more

I grabbed take out lunch from here and was extremely disappointed. I'm no sushi expert but I can tell good sushi from bad sushi and this was definitely bad sushi. I order a cucumber roll, a pickled radish roll, and a spider roll. None of the ingredients from the rice to the veggies to the crab were fresh. The ginger and wasabi provided even seemed old as they had a brownish coloring to them. I was really disappointed in the quality as this restaurant was recommended to me. The service when picking up was good, though I did have to wait past the pick up time. The staff were friendly and the inside of the restaurant had a good atmosphere. There should be a law against how poorly the seafood was prepared! Salmon was dry and done cooking about 10min before it was pulled off the griddle. The scallops made me physically hurt watching them get scorched and needing a scrapper to turn them over. Swordfish tasted more of tuna than anything and dry. No egg in the fried rice is just flat blasphemy and should be enough to shut them down. Needless to say, I couldn't be more disappointed and irritated with the entire experience and priced far too high. Was told by Japanese acquaintances that this place was the place to go to in Northwest Ohio, and it is certainly a gem of the place. Had sushi, and Tamago sushi was awesome. The chef told me that they make the egg part at the location, which is not something that many Japanese restaurants do these days. Had a wonderful lunch thanks to the chef. Way over priced for what it is ! And I'm not being cheap, I have no problem dropping $100 for good quality food! HANDS DOWN THE BEST SUSHI JOINT IN FINDLAY. This place has a great vibe, great servers, and an even better Japanese tasting menu with a street food vibe. If you're in Findlay, go where the Asian people go. Japan West's menu is elaborate, well-tuned, and caters to the adventurous eater. A full sushi menu, but they also have small plate options in a tapas style for tasting. Everything was delicious; we had some sushi staples, but also ventured out and tried some unfamiliar stuff. Flame broiled squid, noodle bowls, and yakitori were all awesome. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place for an experience. They have a hibachi if that's your flavor, but I would recommend the sushi and tasting menus! read more

Went here for date night with my girlfriend, and This dinner was simply wonderful. We had thick udon noddles as an appetizer, a couple of sushi roles, and then a slice of cheesecake, and another desert I cannot remember the name of (pictured). And it was so wonderful. This was my first time to Japan West. The waiter was such a sweet soul to us! The menu is very vast and filled with amazing selections! I was in the mood for a warm bowl of ramen that would make me feel full and happy....so miso ramen it was! We were given a bowl of rice snacks and a warm towel to wash our hands with upon seating. Located on Main Street, Japan West is wonderfully designed, modern and visually very appealing. We arrived early for dinner during the week, and given the quality experience we had, a bit surprised it was slow, although it was typical winter weather in Findlay. Which is enough to make anyone stay home. The good news, we didn't have trouble finding a place to park. The hibachi grill menu is a bit narrow, but we didn't have any trouble finding enough to choose from. It was a bit more expensive than that awful Japanese steakhouse on Tiffin Avenue, you know the one serves all the starch with bits of protein here and there. It was definitely fun, but the objective was perfectly prepared food rather than a food throwing show. The chicken and steaks were perfect with maybe the most tender steak I have had in years. The vegetables were served al dente and delicious. This is a definite repeat the next time in town. read more

The best sushi in Findlay! The quality of the fish is top notch and is obviously prepared by someone who knows their craft. It's a fairly small menu, but it's all the best it can be. The atmosphere feels a little more upscale than other sushi restaurants in town, but it isn't stuffy. There are private rooms in the back which is perfect for a small party, in addition to the front dining tables and hibachi tables. I've eaten at Japan Wests with friends, family, and with a Bachelorette party and have enjoyed myself each time. read more

Came in to Japan West to celebrate my birthday. After exploring the traditional Japanese dinner menu, my family decided to try the beef teriyaki & tempura and the tonkatsu & tempura. It was delicious and perfect for those who want to try something new but are afraid that "traditional Japanese" means raw fish. Japan West (JW) is one of two Japanese restaurants in Findlay, Ohio. My friend has raved about JW since moving to this small town last summer. She enticed us to visit her with a promise to take us to JW. We came to JW for sushi and hibachi. The availability of pickled plum and mint leaf sushi is a sign of authenticity for any Japanese food establishment. My friend has homemade pickled plum in her fridge and even pickled plum-flavored hard candy. Needless to say, she knows her pickled plum, and JW does not fail to disappoint with their roll. Our party of five arrived after rush hour dinner hours on a Saturday night. We had made a reservation, and we were on time. Upon arrival, we weren't greeted by the host for over ten minutes. It was awkward for us to be kept standing at the entrance, so awkward the other restaurant patrons noticed. After ten minutes, a host had us seated at a round table while they cleaned a hibachi grill table. We sat at this table and weren't asked for water or drinks. We were then moved to the grill table, and we waited another 20 minutes before we were offered drink s. The waiter told us they were short-staffed-there were 2 waitstaff and two grill chefs for the entire restaurant. My review is less about the 45 minutes we waited to have our drink orders taken, and more about the quality of the food. Because I could care less about service or wait time, given I've waited for more than 9 hours for a hot dog from Hot Doug's in Chicago. Food: Hibachi: We ordered scallop, shrimp, and teriyaki beef hibachi. D said the scallops were cooked to perfection, among the best he has ever had. The beef was cooked medium rare and to perfection. Tip: It's easier on the chef if you have your meat cooked to the same level of doneness for everyone in your party. Make it easier on your chef-higher quality jokes will ensue and he will let you have his burnt rice if you ask. He may still serve the man in your party first after saying, "Ladies first." Veggies were perfectly grilled to almost caramelization and seasoned well. The rice was clumpy, but an excellent complement to the vegetables (cucumber, carrots, onions), bean sprouts and mushrooms, and meat. Sushi: The pickled plum and mint leaf sushi roll measured up. Not as sour or salty that would turn a pickled plum virgin off, so highly recommended for a non-seafood sushi roll. The Japan West roll (tuna, salmon, eel, octopus) was wrapped in a light green wrap. I understand why it's the house specialty roll. JW is also known for their bidet in the bathroom. I recommend playing with the settings, and starting at lower pressure if you've never had a bidet experience before. Nice touch to the restaurant. Overall: 5 stars for food. 5 stars for our hibachi chef. 0 stars for the wait time. read more

I am really torn on how many stars Japan West really deserves. This is one of those times I wish half stars existed for sure... The ambiance is nice, and probably worth four stars. The restaurant is nice, clean, and quiet. The design of the dining area out front is what you would expect from a typical sushi place, and the hibachi tables are, well, hibachi tables. The food was overall quiet good, but there was one serious miss. The sushi was absolutely delicious. Great rice, super fresh and clean fish, and great rolling technique. The soba noodle soup itself was great, but the tempura shrimp is a terrible idea. I didn't realize it would be in the soup...which kind of destroys the whole idea of tempura. All things considered the food was a four star. The service is where this trip fell apart. The host was also the bartender and waiter...and I'm not sure he should have been doing anything that involved personal interface. He was incredibly hard to catch when we wanted something, and on the rare occasion he stopped to help was downright rude. We will go back for the sushi, but I hope to high heavens to have somebody else as a waiter. read more

Inside was nice and clean and our Hibachi chef was very kind. Unfortunately that's the best part of my experience. We were never given hot towels like the other tables and after our two children had been in their high chairs for over 10 minutes the waitress said they needed to take back a high chair as we didn't have a reservation and the party that just arrived did have a reservation and needed the high chair. The spicy tuna roll was more fishy than I have ever eaten anywhere and the price for everything far exceeded the level of food quality and very obviously the service. Japan West does not have the "specialty rolls", with several different kinds of fish in one roll, because that is not how it is done in Japan, according to the manager, Ito. We just want to get an apology and we hope they could do some changes next time. But they just smile and say good night. i don't understand their behavior.
