we went to this restaurant this evening. My friend order something but it is so sour. We told them and they change it for us. However we still think it is not fresh. Wo talked with their boss. We just want to get an apology and we hope they could do some changes next time. But they just smile and say good night. i don't understand their behavior. Of all the sushi joints I've been brought to (I'm, admitedly not a sushi fan), Japan West is probably the most classy and genuine. With well-dressed wait staff, intimate atmosphere, and full-service bar, Japan West is certainly aiming for the older crowd in Findlay. One glance at the menu offers a good mix of sushi and traditional Japanese cuisine, but a second glance offers horrifying price ranges. I'm no newbie to sushi prices, but $12 here and $6 there for a couple rolls adds up FAST, and moreso than many other places I've gone to. Unless you are willing to drop 40 or 50 dollars on yourself for sushi, you are probably going to leave hungry. Fortunately, lunch prices are more agreeable, at least for kitchen food (around 8 or 9 for Katsu/gyudon bowls), but the lunch portion is a bit small. I glanced the dinner menu and appetizer menu, and nothing was below $12, but I can assume the portions are larger for dinner. There is also hibachi available at pretty typical prices, and it looked delicious. For the timid, the typical chicken teriyaki meal is available but at a laughably small portion. As it should be at any respectable Japanese restaurant, presentation is everything here; heavy garnishes, tail-on shrimp formations in the sushi, and an overall lavish feel makes the food feel high-class. A full bar is available, but I was unable to glean the prices, but from what I could see, the selection of alcohol was robust, and the atmosphere is entirely classy, meaning this is the spot to bring the sushi-loving-lad/y for a date. As with any sushi/Japanese restaurant, the food tends to be outside the commanality of children's likes, so I suggest leaving the kids at home for this one, but they do make excellent accomidations for the kids, and have excellent wait-staff who don't seem to mind picky eaters. If you want an authentic Japanese meal, look no further if you are in the Findlay area. read more

Japan Midwest. I have been to....you often see Sushi restaurant reviews prefaced by this type of hierarchial qualification when reviewing a restaurant. So I will play. I have been to NY, Chicago, SF, but also Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Sao Paulo (look it up Japanese fans) and this sushi may not rival what you would find there. But....it is really, really, really good. Seriously, this is the real deal, this is not some Ichiban or Shogun type of theatrical American Japanese food. This is serious sushi.sashimi. I had the sashimi appetizer and Uni and Toro and they were excellent and extremely fresh. Please....try this place if you are a sushi/Japanese food aficionodo. For a location like Findlay, Ohio, it might as well be Chicago. Well done, fresh, many different and authentic Japanese food choices. read more

Asian Grill and Tokyo Steakhouse/Hokkaido Steakhouse are better value for sushi. The sushi at Japan West is the over-priced kind of fru-fru stuff if you want to appear classy. If you just want great tasting sushi, go elsewhere. read more

I was in town for business and headed here based on several recommendations. The entire meal was incredible. Ate a ton of sushi (we requested that our waiter bring us whatever he recommended - it was the best choice we could have made). Japan West is actually two restaurants. One serves Sushi (front) and the other serves Hibachi (back). The sushi restaurant is primarily targeted towards employees of a Japanese auto manufacturer on the outskirts of town, who funded and partially owns the place. If you go to the very back of the restaurants you can often get a glimpse of some of their private dining rooms. The draw for most locals is the Hibachi place. It is run by a native Detroiter that is an absolute pleasure to chat with over dinner. Both the beef and the fish dishes here are excellent. The chef is also happy to bring out his special spicy seasoning if you are into hotter foods. These guys also do a great job of catering to vegetarians. read more

Japan west is the best restaurant in town. Really fresh fish and the best sushi. Better than most Japanese restaurants in many big cities. Try the Koran BBQ ribs it's really special. Tonkatsu with curry rice is my favourite lunch at Japan West. read more

This is a really good sushi place, just DO NOT GET THE SEA URCHIN it looks and tastes like cat food. This place also has an amazing toilet!!!! It's half robot and half toiletry. You can squirt water in the air at a maximum of 4 feet! My waiter was Peter if I recall correctly? Very very very nice server. A great meal, and a great dining experience. I know some think that the price maybe a little high, but I understand the expense of good sushi ingredients. Given that there's not a lot of Ocean around Ohio, I expect to pay the same for good sushi whether it's in Cincinnati, Columbus or Findlay. We go out for sushi twice a year - my birthday and our anniversary. I love that there is good sushi nearby...when I moved from Austin Texas I briefly lamented being in the middle of nowhere Ohio and missing out on good food but then I found this gem of a sushiyasan! It's not the best sushi in the US but it is very good for Ohio and takes me down memory lane whenever I want to reminisce about living in Japan. The sushi chef is a professional and an expat, I think. You will pay $35-40 a person or more with alcohol, but worth it. I do not recommend tuna in general in the US unless you know it's been flown in from tsukiji but my husband claims the tuna here is very acceptable. The tamago sushi and salmon sashimi are delish. read more

Really really slow! You cannot imagine we spent almost an hour for the first dish to come. The waiter was really rude! When we complain it was too slow and we were having limited time, he replied very impolitely that if we wanna cancel it! How can someone serve people like that if you really wanna do business... You will not find higher quality sushi anywhere! I have eaten at more sushi restaurants coast to coast than I can count and very few have the overall quality of fish that Japan West does. I used to live in Findlay and ate sushi for the first time at Japan West. After nearly 10 years of being gone and eating sushi across the country, I came back. All I can say is WOW! I was surprised to see a simple menu in comparison to most fusion sushi bars, but realized quickly that this is the cuisine at its finest form, in true Japanese traditions. I literally go out of my way to eat at least one roll every time I am coming through town. One of the worst experiences I have ever had in eating in Findlay. We had reservations on a Sat. night for 3 @ 7:00, we arrived at the restaurant @ 6:55 were seated at the counter/bar nobody even approached us after our sitting down. The place was maybe half full, we then notified sushi chef that we were moving to adjacent table, and he said that was fine. About 15 minutes later, waiter came and took our drink order, came back about 5 minutes later with drinks, (beer and saki, no drink prep). He then took our sushi and dinner orders, 35 minutes later we are still nursing our drinks, no sign of our server/waiter. People have come in 30 minutes after we have sat down, and our being served apps./salads/soups etc. At 8:00 my son goes up front by the server's station and after waiting for over 5 minutes for anyone to even ask what he needs he finds our waiter and tells him if anyone doesn't come to our table and lets us know what is the problem, we are leaving. The waiter doesn't respond, doesn't come to our table, nothing!! We then stand up and leave after being there well over an hour. Unbelievable evening, a real nightmare! read more

I went to Japan West after having found it online. It was my 50th birthday, and was a special treat. My mother had the Chicken Teriyaki. And though the lunch portion was small, she said it was very good. We both had the Miso soup, a first for her. It was good, but then it's hard to mess that up. I had an appetizer portion of Vegetable Tempura. It was 7-8 pieces, very lightly fried, and good. Though I would have said no to the hot pepper had I of known. I had Sushi, the reason for choosing Japan West. I have had Sushi in a few places in Columbus, this was on par with the better of them. I ordered the two kinds of Eel and Sea Urchin. I enjoyed them all. The prices were a bit steep is my only complaint. And, that they did not have any kind of fish roe, another of my favorites. The place looks wonderful and high end. The bathroom was very clean and modern. Finally, we had the cheesecake. My mother could not stop raving about it. She suggested we go there to eat the next time we are in Findlay. read more
