Randomly decided to go to an escape room with my friends and we found JAR studios on Yelp. Luckily they had spots open on the same day so we booked a slot for 4 people. Half of our group has done escape rooms before while the other half has not. Needless to say, this room is a bit difficult - it's a well thought out game BUT we did end up solving it and escaped! Joe, was a fabulous game host. You can tell he is super passionate about what he does. He was able to give us good hints to get us forward and finish the game. We booked this escape room after seeing rave reviews from all corners of the internet... And it did not disappoint! Between our team of 5, we've easily done over 100 escape rooms, all over the world, and this was one of the best we've been to. Joe's room was a simple but brilliant mix of classic escape room riddles and puzzles. It's really true the room is suitable for anyone from 8 to 80. And you have no advantage having done escape rooms before! His passion and enthusiasm for the concept made the whole experience even more compelling. Joe didn't rush us at all before we entered, answering each of our questions very patiently. It was fantastic being able to geek out about the room with him after as well and get some insight into how the mind of an escape room designer works. A really great experience here at JAR Studios! Let me start off by saying I have done around 40-50 escape rooms throughout the Bay Area and LA, but this was my first one here in the Sacramento area! I have always wanted to try some here as I heard there were some good ones out here. My cousin found this place on a Saturday night with a booking open for up to 15 people! With our group of 12, we were excited and determined to escape. Upon entering, the lobby is already designed in a way that you feel like you are in the game. In the lobby, we met our amazing game host and owner of the business, Joe! I truly have never met a game host with the same passion, enthusiasm, immersion, and intuitiveness as Joe! He had such great energy from start to finish, he set expectations for us so well, he really wanted to create a really amazing game experience for us in every way possible. THE GAME ITSELF: The game itself was really fun. It was a bit smaller than I thought it would be, but there were so many different puzzles for the 12 of us to work on and try to figure out. This room is not very linear, but it went well with the puzzles and storyline. I would say these rooms are all 1st gen, maybe a couple 2nd gen. You have your fair share of lock and keys, combo locks, and some keypad entries! With that being said, I think the storyline and room was played out in a way where I did not even think about the tech of the room or even take that into account. The puzzles made you think, overthink, and question yourself enough to just be super determined to finish the room. Obviously I do not want to say too much to give away the room, but I feel like as Joe said, you can be brand new to escape rooms or pretty familiar with escape rooms and still get tripped up on a few puzzles here. We escape with 4 minutes left to spare! My only critiques were the amount of times that he had to come into the room to show us something or make sure something worked. He did warn us in the beginning that some things wouldnt be working right away and played it as being "part of our team" so when he came in it wouldnt ruin the immersion. "Think of me as your NPC" he couldnt say it any better! OVERALL: Back to Joe, he spent some time with us to talk about the room and pretty much his outlook and intentions with the game. For example, the lobby being decorated the way it was, the reasoning for certain puzzles, etc. He also took the time to commend each person for solving puzzles -- he was THAT attentive to our game -- something that you might not usually see at your average escape room. Joe really cultivated the experience for us, and I am glad that we could play his room! I really had a great time here and am looking forward to what updates to the room he might make, what new rooms he might open, and so on! Much support and power to JAR studios! read more

Our party of four had a wonderful time. Two of us are huge fans of escape rooms and had done many before, while the other two of us were relatively new to them; this escape room was so passionately crafted with care and designed to be just the right level of challenging, that we all had a lot of fun. The whole experience, from the moment you step into the front door of the shop, shows an absolute love of both the story being told and puzzles in general. The game master's enthusiasm, terrific sense of humor, and willingness to give so much of his time before, during (if you need it), and even after the challenge took the experience to the next level. The best part of JAR Studios is the owner. He's so enthusiastic about what he does , you can't help but have a great time solving puzzles with your friends . He was very friendly and explained so much about escape rooms in general. You can see and feel his passion for them ! Anyway, like most escape rooms , you have to find the clues, to get the next clues, to get the heck out in time to survive. If you get stuck , you can get help to move to the next clue. So did we make it out in time ... nope. But we were close, and it was cool that he let us actually finish the game despite running out of time . Location is weird, but plenty of parking, and it really is a fun escape room . Definitely give it a go and I hope you all survive:) read more

What an awesome escape room or Live Action Gaming room this place was! First and foremost a big thumps up to Joe the owner. As soon as we entered he was engaging and had a extremely affable personality. He was extremely passionate about this business and it really started the experience on a good foot. I am still pretty new to escape rooms but so far this place ranks as my favorite. The lobby is themed along to the escape room and it was really nice to see that this detail was seen throughout our entire experience. Joe started off a quick chat and some brain exercise puzzles. I don't want to spoil any of the room but there was definitely enough of a challenge to make this a fun and engaging experience. Joe also offers the options of clues on a walk-talkie if you are having trouble, but we really did our best to not ask for help. We caved but thankfully it was only for one puzzle. Throughout the experience Joe didn't act as a silent observer criticizing our mistakes but acted as a helpful guide. Decided to take my wife to an escape room for her birthday and JAR Studios did not disappoint! This was our first time doing an escape room and our host, Joe was great. He gave us instructions and a brief run down of what to expect. He also let us know he would check in with us via walkie-talkie and offer clues if needed. Clues were definitely needed! He presented them in a way that guided us in the right direction while still requiring problem solving instead of just giving us the answer which I liked. Towards the tail end of the game my wife and I started to get in the swing of things and were able to escape just in the nick of time. Overall we had a great time and look forward to doing it again. I read the reviews and it sounded promising, it was! My boyfriend and I had time to kill before our dinner reservation (2hrs) and luckily there was a cancellation so we got to come in immediately. Our reservation wait time sped up so we only got 15 minutes into the game but host was awesome enough to let us either come back after dinner or another time we chose. Every detail was thought out and you can tell Joe really cares about the experience you have. We went to JAR Studios for a work team building activity. I highly recommend others choose this venue for a corporate event. Most of us were inexperienced and were worried about more immersive rooms that can be emotionally intense i.e claustrophobia. I bought a Groupon deal for a session at JAR Studios and I was definitely not disappointed. My group and I were also not treated poorly for using a Groupon. My Groupon deal was only for a party of 8, but JAR Studios was super accommodating and allowed us to add a 9th person for an additional price. JAR Studios is not a private escape room so if you don't buy all of the tickets for a game, you risk having to play a game with strangers. FYI. JAR Studios is hidden off to the side of a shopping center, but the windows have large signage so you can't miss it! There aren't too many parking spots on this side of the shopping center so either carpool in or park to the side and just walk to JAR. Upon entering JAR, there was a small waiting area as well as lockers on the side to put your belongings into. Our game master that day was a guy named Joe who I believe is also the owner. He was very energetic, friendly, and you could tell he is very passionate about creating escape rooms and puzzles in general. My group did the Fallout Shelter game since that was the only one available during this time. This escape room was a little different from the ones that my group has done before and this threw my group off. This is coming from someone who has done at least 11 escape rooms. Unfortunately, I can't tell you too much or it'll ruin the game! We had unlimited amount of clues and the way to get clues is to use a walkie talkie to communicate with the game master. Overall, I think Joe did a good job on giving us enough clues and hints without actually solving the puzzles for us. This escape room was so challenging that even with unlimited clues, we were unable to escape! The escape rate is 18-20% according to Joe. Even though our time was up and we had not escaped, Joe allowed us to continue finishing the puzzles that we needed to complete in order to escape the room. It definitely took us over an hour! LOL. This is something that makes JAR stand out because normally with other escape rooms, once you fail at escaping, the game master either quickly verbalizes or shows you what puzzles you needed to solve in order to escape. The majority of the time, they kind of rush you out too! There was one that did not even explain to my group what we had left that needed to be solved to escape. The game master told us to come back and play the game again. I totally appreciated Joe allowing us to finish the game even thought our hour was already up and not rushing us out. Overall, I think my group had a fun time even though we did not escape! This is an escape room that I'd definitely recommend to others and will for sure come back when they have new games! read more

We found this place on yelp. After reading the reviews this out weighed the others so we had to come here. Our group my husband, myself and our daughters 13 & 8. And another family of four that joined our group. We arrived a few minutes early and met the owner Joe and he is funny and pretty awesome. The room setup is small but big enough for a group of 8. It wasn't as easy there was a walkie talkie to communicate to Joe when we needed a clue. We can tell he is passionate about what he does and he even gave us a few extra minute to finish which was awesome because our girls were happy. The experience was different from any other escape room we been to. It might not be high tech and does not have obstacles that you crawl or climb. It was just the uniqueness of the setup and well thought out. We all had such a great time! This is a fantastic escape room. Absolutely book it. Our group of four booked this last minute on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend (we booked the 5pm slot at 3:15 from the JAR website based on quality of reviews here and on Google). We were looking for an Escape Room and everything else we could find was booked. Our group was a 13-year-old, a 20-year-old, and two 40-year-olds. We've all done Escape Rooms before, but you won't have needed to if you want to have fun in Fallout Shelter. We arrived 10 minutes early and met Joe, who is awesome and hilarious. You can really tell that this is his passion, and his energy is contagious. He made everybody laugh and made us all comfortable with his demeanor and jokes. We had no other folks with us, but our group of four still had a fantastic time in this room that has a maximum game size of 8 people. The story is great. The room is great. His use of a walkie talkie to facilitate communication is thematically appropriate and fun. The puzzles were cleverly designed - excellent use of visually comparing different things in the room, text-based logic puzzles, physical dexterity puzzles, the room really runs the gamut in terms of variety. It's all very well-thought-out and designed. Joe never made us feel bad about asking for hints. Several times he offered us one unprompted when he saw we were struggling for a long time on a certain puzzle (always asking whether we wanted it first, which we did). You can tell he really watches you the whole time and wants you to get out in time. And even when we didn't make it out in time, he let us finish. He builds additional time between his bookings to let you finish. This is something that no other escape room I've been to does. I can't recommend JAR Studios highly enough. read more

Excellent experience!!! My coworker and I played this room and had a blast. I have done 30-40 games previously, and my coworker has done about 3. This experience is not scary, frustrating, or misleading. It had a great assortment of puzzles as well as our game master was so enthusiastic and helpful. Having tried most of the escape rooms in the Sacramento area, I can safely say that JAR is in the top 2 or 3 for the area. The production value is great and the puzzles are very creatively designed. No two puzzles were alike. My gf and I have done many escape rooms, but we brought along two first-timers and all 4 of us had a great time in this room. Unlike some rooms, everyone can contribute to these solutions no matter their skill level. The room was not easy at all, but Joe is very good about giving hints without handing you the solution on a platter. We did not escape in the allotted time but we were allowed us to finish anyway so we could see experience all the puzzles. I have been to escape rooms before but my boyfriend, who is a puzzle/board game enthusiast had not, so I decided it was about time to show him how much fun they can be. JAR studios did not disappoint. We arrived a bit early, but that gave us the time to chit chat with the owner/operator Joe. He is a very engaging personality- you can tell he loves to connect with people through games and he loves to interact with the people coming to his escape room. This is a family business and I'm proud to support it. Even though this is a family business the production value of this room is very high. Everything is very professionally done, the introduction videos were a great lead in, the decoration of the lobby helped with the immersive experience, and the actual room was very intricate, everything was tied in and made sense. The escape of the room is more achievable with a bigger group, 4-6 would be ideal- any more than that it may seem a little crowded. We only had 2 people so we ended up not escaping the room within the given time period, but the host is very fair so he gave us as many clues as we needed and actually came in to help us with a few of the more difficult tasks- both my boyfriend and I were running on only a few hours sleep so Joe's assistance was much appreciated. My boyfriend and I are definitely looking forward to JAR studio's future projects, we are guaranteed repeat customers! read more
