A really great experience here at JAR Studios! Let me start off by saying I have done around 40-50 escape rooms throughout the Bay Area and LA, but this was my first one here in the Sacramento area! I have always wanted to try some here as I heard there were some good ones out here. My cousin found this place on a Saturday night with a booking open for up to 15 people! With our group of 12, we were excited and determined to escape. Upon entering, the lobby is already designed in a way that you feel like you are in the game. In the lobby, we met our amazing game host and owner of the business, Joe! I truly have never met a game host with the same passion, enthusiasm, immersion, and intuitiveness as Joe! He had such great energy from start to finish, he set expectations for us so well, he really wanted to create a really amazing game experience for us in every way possible. THE GAME ITSELF: The game itself was really fun. It was a bit smaller than I thought it would be, but there were so many different puzzles for the 12 of us to work on and try to figure out. This room is not very linear, but it went well with the puzzles and storyline. I would say these rooms are all 1st gen, maybe a couple 2nd gen. You have your fair share of lock and keys, combo locks, and some keypad entries! With that being said, I think the storyline and room was played out in a way where I did not even think about the tech of the room or even take that into account. The puzzles made you think, overthink, and question yourself enough to just be super determined to finish the room. Obviously I do not want to say too much to give away the room, but I feel like as Joe said, you can be brand new to escape rooms or pretty familiar with escape rooms and still get tripped up on a few puzzles here. We escape with 4 minutes left to spare! My only critiques were the amount of times that he had to come into the room to show us something or make sure something worked. He did warn us in the beginning that some things wouldnt be working right away and played it as being "part of our team" so when he came in it wouldnt ruin the immersion. "Think of me as your NPC" he couldnt say it any better! OVERALL: Back to Joe, he spent some time with us to talk about the room and pretty much his outlook and intentions with the game. For example, the lobby being decorated the way it was, the reasoning for certain puzzles, etc. He also took the time to commend each person for solving puzzles -- he was THAT attentive to our game -- something that you might not usually see at your average escape room. Joe really cultivated the experience for us, and I am glad that we could play his room! I really had a great time here and am looking forward to what updates to the room he might make, what new rooms he might open, and so on! Much support and power to JAR studios!

The best part of JAR Studios is the owner. He's so enthusiastic about what he does , you can't help but have a great time solving puzzles with your friends . He was very friendly and explained so much about escape rooms in general. You can see and feel his passion for them ! Anyway, like most escape rooms , you have to find the clues, to get the next clues, to get the heck out in time to survive. If you get stuck , you can get help to move to the next clue. So did we make it out in time ... nope. But we were close, and it was cool that he let us actually finish the game despite running out of time . Location is weird, but plenty of parking, and it really is a fun escape room . Definitely give it a go and I hope you all survive:)

One of the best escape room experiences I've had. The owner really makes you feel like you've succeeded.

It seems like part of this recent trend of what I consider "corporate escape rooms." From the storefront, it looks like the rooms have pretty high production value. However, I've come to realize that more money dumped into visuals doesn't always mean more difficulty, creativity, or just overall fun. Nonetheless, I was quite surprised by the room my group decided to tackle, called The Heist. In an effort not to spoil the puzzles for anyone reading this review, the main things I want to point out are (1) the puzzles felt really organic and there were times where I felt like was really part of a heist, (2) there were several puzzles that really rode on the edge of what I would consider natural limitations, and (3) all of the puzzles worked the way they were supposed to, and some a bit overly precise. I'll always appreciate precision, regardless of how much it pisses me off in a room, though. My group and I have already booked our next challenge here, and are excited to see what else they have to offer. Highly recommend getting a large enough group together to fill all the spots, since they do allow other people to fill in to reach capacity, unless you're into meeting new people like that. To each their own!

Ryan was our host today, and he was very patient. At one point, we moved too far ahead of the game, and was pretty lost. He helped pause the clock, and moved a few pieces around to help us backtrack. There were still a few pieces of the puzzle we had to solve before moving forward. Thanks for the assist Ryan, we appreciate it. We tried The Heist this time, and would absolutely recommend! We played with two adults and two kids. I think we asked for help/clues 7-10 and escaped with 3 mins to spare. I would probably say 3-4 adults would've been sufficient for this game. Will absolutely be back for another visit. The price is $43 a person. Kids 5 and up were the same price as adults. 4 and under are free. It's on the pricier end, but they will price match with Groupon! Book ahead would be recommended.

Not saying it was awful but:…read more1) For a group of 4, they should provide more than one light source in the dark room we were in. 2) This was my first escape room experience, we were in a 9/10 difficulty room, and there were many combination locks involved. Probably more than 25 locks across the different scenes. One of the combination locks had letters so worn away it was very hard to read, so we spent 10 minutes with what we thought were the correct letters, only for a staff to point out that we had it on B when we all thought (4 of us looked at it) that it was on R. The paint on the B was worn off so it looked like an R. I told two staff about the letters being worn away, and neither of them seemed to care. Had they just said "Thanks for letting us know, we'll look at getting a new lock" that would have been good customer service. There is another review here mentioning "apathetic staff" and I think that's exactly what I experienced. Staff should inspect those items, in the dark as customers experience it, to see when things are worn out so as not to be readable. Not being able to see or read the objects should not be the challenging part of an escape room. Replacing a $5 padlock is better than a customer having a bad experience (with the room and with the staff) and never wanting to come back again. Overall, again this was my first escape room experience, but when the puzzles almost entirely rely on combination locks, that to me doesn't seem very imaginative. Granted it's not easy to find all the combinations, but it gets kind of boring keep figuring out letters and numbers for the sake of opening locks. If I ever do another escape room, I'll probably try it at a different business.
