After looking at a number of different photographers' portfolios online, I fell in love with Shane's approach to capturing his subjects looking so relaxed, natural, and effortlessly beautiful in a range of natural and urban settings. After meeting him, it was easy to see why everyone looks so comfortable in his photos -- he's got an incredible easy going manner that makes even the most photo-shy (me and my then-fiance) eager to get in front of the camera. Bonus points for sharing a lot of our interests (dogs, traveling, nature, internet memes) and being an interesting person to talk to. Shane was super flexible when it came to scheduling our engagement photos and wedding photos. He had a ton of ideas for different locations and shots and made us look incredible. The two other people he brought to shoot our wedding, his second shooter Sam and his intern Ana, were great and our whole wedding party just adored all of them. We had asked to take some gritty photos in an abandoned area, which attracted some unwanted attention and Shane and his crew went above and beyond. They stayed late and arranged a fantastic "last shot" late in the night that was a lot of fun to do. Shane posted some teaser photos immediately after our wedding on Facebook (he asked us whether that would be something we would want, and it was) which is a lot of fun when you're basking in that just-married excitement. We notified him via email 'within' the 7 day grace period he gives to customers that we want him as our photographer. He responded that he would love to be our photographer and we started the process to have the contract written up. Due to our schedules, it took 2 to 3 days for us to get back to him at times, but was able to get the contract written up in 1.5 weeks. My fiance and I were not able to both review the contract till a week later. I can understand that the delay in our response could have been frustrating. After a week I called him with final questions and requested to have the contract modified to ask for our approval before images are posted. He did not indicate issues with this and he said he would gladly modify the contract and send to us the next day. I thought we were all set to go and was very excited. Two days later didn't receive an updated contract. Instead, received an email stating that he accepted another customer who signed and paid him right away. I'm not sure how he expected us to pay him a deposit when he had not yet sent the updated contract he promised to us. We would have appreciated being consulted before he had accepted the new customer since we were in the middle of signing the contract. It is very unfortunate as we did not expect this and we are now back at square one. In the end, it is probably for the best. After this review had been posted, Shane indicated he thought we were on the fence the whole time. I can not speak to his photography as I've only seen his portfolio which is what appealed to us. This experience may have been a fluke. We didn't have the ideal experience, but Shane has 8 positive reviews (see filtered reviews) and a friend of mine who used him for their wedding enjoyed working with him.

We scheduled the photo start time for 2 PM, annd Alex showed up at 12:00PM to begin setting up. My makeup artist told me this is Alex style. Once he finished setting up the video equipment, he went to the site to start capturing the details--shots of my dress, my beautiful high heels, and jewelry. He was so detailed, trying to get different angles of the shots, which I really liked. I spent a lot of money on my dress and accessories, and I definitely wanted to capture them in my book. The ceremony was outside under the stage, and he guided us to the back area, which had more greenery, for our family and wedding party portraits. He was so funny and creative--everyone enjoyed his sense of humor. I believe he has a gift for making people feel comfortable and de-stressed. He even made my 85-year-old grandmother smile, which I hadn't seen in a long, long time. During the ceremony, he captured so many different shots, from wide angles to close-ups. He stayed close to us but kept enough distance so that the guests felt comfortable. I remember at my sister's wedding, her photographer stayed too close to everyone, and it felt awkward. I was very clear I dont like group photos that have a "set-up" cheesy type quality. I spoke with David over the phone 5 days before my wedding and confirmed the time, location, etc of my event. I made a point of telling him that at my wedding location there were gorgeous backdrops for pictures including the glass museum bridge, union station, the downtown waterfront in Tacoma, and many more. On the day of my wedding David showed up over an hour late to my hotel room to take photos (he text me when he was ten minutes late to say he was 15 minutes away then I guess he was looking for parking for the rest of the time). By that time I was busy and unable to get the candids I had wanted of me getting ready. I told him again how much I dont like the cheesy set up type pictures and to please avoid photographing the wedding party that way. Let me state that David is very personable and a very pleasent person to have a conversation with. He took pictures of my husband and groomsmen on the stairs inside the Museum (not outside infront of any of the lovely old building that were literally outside the front door). He kept telling them to do "something crazy". The photos all look very cheesy, set up, and forced. He did not take one single photo of anyone infront of any of the beautiful architecure that was available. He took pictures of the reception area, pictures of me infront of a concrete wall with blinds (which washed me out horribly), and for some reason back to the same nondescript staircase again for family photos). When I recieved the photos from weddingbug I was sick. There are maybe 3 usuable shots of my husband and I together. There were 300 photos total he took (and I mean total, not after he threw out unusable shots). There are maybe 25 shots total that can be edited to look average at best. He managed to catch every bad angle and unattractive facial expressions on both of us. He repeatedly took phots of us in a pose that made me look like a hunchback. He took 10 shots of a photo that I got my husband as a wedding gift. Thats right my friends. He took pictures of a picture that I already owned. Nothing to be done about it now, my photos are awful. Whats interesting is David showed me some photos of a friend of his wedding. He mentioned he had gone and scouted the location ahead of time. There were beautiful, dramatic photo journalism style photos I loved. For some reason, maybe because Im not his friend, or I booked him through weddingbug.com, he decided my wedding was going to look like cheesy, forced, bad prom photos. I should have said or done something at the wedding about my concerns but I was too busy trying to enjoy my event and foolishly expected I wouldnt have to tell a professional adult how to do their job. I probably wouldnt have written a review but David asked me to write a review for his profile (before I had even seen my photos).

The idea was to achieve professional portraits in a natural home setting and we definitely were able to capture the mood and personalities of each family member.
