tl;dr: This shop is great. Bob is a treasure. The dog is a gem. Fountain pens. I recently got into fountain pens, and the time came to pick up my first bottle of ink. I had a few brands and colors in mind, and while in NYC I had the opportunity to stop at Jason Office Products. I walk in and an older man calls out to me, as he is hidden, seated, behind the counter. I ask if they carry bottle of pen ink, and in a delightfully New York accent he says, "Of cooourse we have pen ink," as he guides me over. I spent a few minutes, and I was disappointed with the selection: squink, lamy basic colors, and a few others. I wanted something more...special. On my way out, I let the gentleman know the bad news, and I explained in more detail what I'm looking for. He gives me a sidelong glance, and asks, "What if I have exactly what you're looking for? I keep the good stuff under lock and key, for 'special people.'" And there it was, a limited collection of Caran d'Ache including my desired color, Saffron. I then learned that this gentleman is Bob, and we had a jolly chat about the store and our mutual love of nice stationery. I've got a thing for office supplies. Especially pens. How much so? A guy in a shop once called me "a pen hoe." So I smacked him, told him to have my Sarasa's 1.0 in blue by sundown, then hopped into my emerald green Caddy I like to call Oz. Jason's is a great place for my fix. They've got many, many different kinds of disposables, all of which can be purchased as singles. Not a big deal? Try finding that anywhere else. No offense to Staples, but sometimes, I don't need an 18 pack. So for me, I go here to get a few at a time. They've also got lots of pads, from Moleskin on down, as well as a decent collection of nicer pens, as in the kind you don't trash when the ink runs dry. I just bought my first fountain from here, and while it wasn't as cheap as Amazon, I felt a couple extra bucks was worth it to keep this place from turning into another Subway. But best in store has to go to the dog. Can't recall his name, but you can't miss him. He's the size of a small person, but totally friendly and always looking to play. As one of the other customers stated, 'watch out, he's sneaky' and it's all true. Jason has continued to do shotty work as best when we ordered business cards through his company. Every time we did, we would have to have a bunch of emails back and forth because the font was obviously WAY off from the other font on the cards or something wasn't the correct color, etc. We decided he was unprofessional and dropped him as a vendor. Since then he has been harassing the employees at our firm and calling their personal cell phones. He even called the Managing Partner of our firm, which he STOLE THE NUMBER OFF THE BUSINESS CARD we had printed through him. VERY unprofessional. If you feel like being ripped off for shotty work and then harassed about it later, then Jason's is your place. Otherwise, go somewhere else. read more

This place is the essence of a solid Manhattan business with an owner who will take the time to give you his knowledge in an entertaining and "New York Polite" way (ie. he's got a great attitude, with some attitude.) Went in to get a quality pen, and found great selection, great prices, and someone who really knows his trade. Gift wrapped and out the door with a smile on my face. Hey, I even was given the chance to see a pic of their beautiful dog (which was a no show that day) and may go back to just to check it out. I wouldn't have known about this place except for the small "Fine Pen Department" note on their signage outside as I was walking past at lunch. They have a huge selection of fountain pens in this hole in the wall store! I noticed Montblanc, Pelikan, Cross, Kaweco, Monteverde, Aurora, Schaeffer, Lamy... that's just off the top of my head. Not much ink to speak of except Lamy and Schaffer. The lady at the register was not very knowledgeable about the product, hence the star off. read more

If you want to step back in time and see what variety and assortment truly mean, I recommend you pop by Jason's. I love stores like that -- variety, quality, good prices, and great choices. Now-a-day's that is rare. It's a dream, and a flashback to a much better time in NY. I do remember back when stores had choice and variety. Jason's is a treasure. I read a comment here from a person complaining about the owner's quirky behavior. I am stunned that someone would think that they'd rather have a mind-lulling, personality-free, knowledge-deficient dope at a big box store than a real New Yorker with a cool, variety-filled store in Manhattan. These kinds of independent stores are few and far between now-a-days and I'd think you'd want to support a historic gem like this unique place. Oh, it would be a DREAM if more stores had quirky, funny, odd employees who know their products, rather than hunting for a hapless, sad-sack at a chain store. Long may Jason's (and long may any long-time, small business) reign!! The character and unique charm of this city is dying off.
