I've been a client of Jax and King for years Jaylin is the leader in hair extensions he is super fast efficient and so fun! His staff is professional and so great. Sam has been doing blow outs for me for the weekend to have fab hair and she is the bomb too. Experience and so much style she really knows hair! If you are looking for a top of the line hair salon look no further and book at Jax. The salon is cool, clean and open 7!days a week. It look be a long time to find someone that has this experience but it was worth the wait. I guess you need to kiss a lot of frogs... Thanks Jaylin for making my hair look fab every time I walk out of your salon xo They really go above and beyond to keep the customer happy and you always walk out happy!

I almost don't want to share my thoughts about J&K... but if you want the best hair ever... go here! You cannot go wrong with choosing J&K - the folks who work here are simply fabulous - super talented and just amazing. You will come out of this salon looking and feeling oober great. I enjoyed pampering and "hair therapy" at Jax & King in La Jolla. It's pricey, but I'm worth it. And my fine, fragile hair needs help. Tanya massaged my head when she washed my hair! Ooooh I melted into my glass of white wine. Yes, they offered me a complimentary drink...I chose a glass of white wine. I need a no-fuss hair style. I just get up, comb and go. Tanya listened well and gave me a cut that was appropriate for my hair. She also gave me tips on how to wash my scalp instead of tangling up my hair. (Normally I rip out half my hair during the process of washing, conditioning, and combing.) Tanya's tip worked, along with the shampoo & conditioner that she recommended, which I bought at Jax & King. I bought the Kevin Murphy "Angel Rinse" and "Angel Wash" for my fine hair. Works better than any product I've been able to purchase anywhere else. And it doesn't make my scalp itch. I have a sensitive scalp, and this product is sulfate-free. I loved this place so much that I'd like to return to try something more daring for me...maybe a streak of red or purple in my hair. My little granddaughter says I should try pink! If you have a special occasion, this is a great place for you to make an appointment. I highly recommend it.

I've been on a quest to become an Asian blonde the last few years, and I admit I have gone through a couple of stylists. Finicky? Perhaps, but a gal deserves to have a good hair day nearly every day! Once Jaylin did his magic, I knew I've found a permanent home. Jaylin is a master at his craft, and he stays informed of all the latest, modern trends. My biggest hair goal is to be a blonde without the brassiness and warmth in the color, which often accompany dark, pigmented hair such as mine. I understand that this can't be done overnight -- that it's a journey, but I want to see progress with each salon visit, and Jaylin certainly achieves that. Somehow, he's able to create a natural look with a typically unnatural color for an Asian person! Jaylin's hair cuts are also amazing. I have stick-straight hair, which I used to have to curl if I wanted something less ho-hum. Not anymore: he worked with my hair texture and expertly added layers where needed, so that all I have to do is spray on a texturizing product and off I go! Jax & King is a top-notch salon. I feel like I am visiting close friends every time I go.

Finally, a perfect place that gives an epic blow-out for natural multicultural hair! Jaylin is the absolute best!

If you are on the epic search for a San Diego salon that can perfectly execute a blow-out for natural multi-cultural or African-American hair, please run to Jaylin...your hair will love you for it! Jax & King offers amazing service, professional staff and incredibly knowledgable stylists. Normally I see Rivkah at Maxine's in Chicago, but while back in my hometown on vacation I needed a quick all-natural blow-dry style for a last minute work trip to New York the next day. I was able to squeeze in an appointment before my flight and Jaylin slayed my hair, which is a fete considering my experiences at other salons in San Diego. No guesswork here, just years of perfecting his craft. Thanks to the Jax & King crew I was off to New York with bouncing curls and flowing tresses! Thanks for everything Jaylin! P.S. I had to take an hour-long conference call in the middle of my service and instead of annoyed looks they kept working on my hair, gave me a look that said "You better work girl!" and turned down the music so I could make it happen. This place is the professional woman's dream come true. So kind!

I had my first appointment with Juli today, and she was so amazing! Juli is sweet, very knowledgable and so patient! I came in with hair that had previously attempted ombre that was heavily colored over with dark brown which had turned brassy and red, and split ends for days. It was a lot of work and she did an incredible job, you can tell she loves what she does! She turned my hair into something I never knew I could have, a lovely balayage. She was able to get that terrible brassy red out. I've never been happier! I was also very happy that she taught me some perfect tricks for blow drying my hair and styling. She let me try the styling technique with the curling iron while she stood right beside me and offered corrections, it was SO helpful! The salon is warm, welcoming and very stylish but not trying to hard, it has a great vibe! As soon as I sat down Jaylin came right over and introduced himself, he was a pleasure! I really enjoyed my experience and they really listen to what you want and also make great suggestions. I've never had such a great experience at a salon! Do yourself a favor and make an appointment at Jax & King asap!!

OK so I'm writing another review for a new service I've gotten done by them: extensions. So I've always had long hair and Jaylin has always been amazing about styling it au courant with ombrés and balayages and perfect coloring, particularly when I want my Asian hair completely blond in the summer. Cut to (ha! pun totes intended) when I had my first baby, I had the brilliant idea to cut my hair waist-length hair to my shoulders thinking that'll be easier to take care of with a newborn. Boy, was I wrong. Not only is short hair more work because you actually have to style it, but it also takes FOREVER for the hair to grow out. Mid-length doesn't really serve anyone, really. Jaylin suggested why not vamp up my look (as a pick-me-up since I'm pregnant again and feeling not-so- hot) to slightly longer hair than I used to have with an amazing technique they use on cancer patients and runway models that basically helps growth without damaging or gives sudden length. HELLO I need both! Thank you for giving me my confidence in myself back. Motherhood has made me feel so undone and out of body... Made me remember my inner fire. (ps. my fave extension specialist, Avian, has since left so I've stopped getting them done....)

Jax and King is the best hair salon ever! I started getting my hair cut there about 3 years ago and I have never gone to anyone else. The atmosphere is really nice and the staff are so welcoming, really good therapy-salon vibes. I always stick to the "victoria's secret" cut, soft layers and long hair. I absolutely love all the stylists, and Jay is phenomenal! I got the balayage a couple days ago and I have never been happier with my hair, you'll never walk out of here unsatisfied. Thank you Jax & King for making me feel beautiful!

Looking for the best and willing to pay for it? Then this is the salon for you. After moving to San Diego and enduring a year of lackluster cuts, blah highlights, and humdrum ombrés, I began to scour yelp for a stylist who could bring some wow-factor. After reading up on Yelp (and hearing glowing reviews from my sister-- who, unbeknownst to me, had been Jaylin's client for awhile), I made the great decision of booking an appointment with Jaylin at Jax & King. When I walked in for my first appointment, I had long hair that reached halfway down my back. Jaylin began the appointment with a consultation. He asked about my personal style, what kind of styling I do to my hair on a daily basis, and what amount of upkeep I would want to put into my hair. Then, after asking me the look I wanted, we compared photos to make sure we were on the same page. I walked out of Jax & King that day with a "lob", and I'm not sure I will go back to long hair ever again! And while other haircuts have grown out and become flat, with no movement, Jaylin's cuts have maintained shape and movement even months after I have been to Jax & King. From the first appointment, Jaylin has been an amazing stylist. Every time I go to Jax & King, I know I will walk out with hair that will bring the wow. And every time I go back, it's like meeting up with one of my best friends to catch up on each other's lives. Jaylin and his team definitely make you feel like a member of the Jax & King Family! Jaylin is a hair god. Entrust him with your hair, and I guarantee you will be pleased.

Extensions that fell out not even an hour after my appointment

DO NOT go here. I had 6 extensions fall out hours after my hair appointment. Jaylin also highlighted my real hair (something I've been doing for years now) and it was so unbelievably fried, I actually had to go somewhere else to have them cut it off because it felt like straw. Here's where it gets good: I called them EVERYDAY for 3 weeks straight, left voicemails crying, sent numerous emails, and not ONE person called me back. The only time they answered was when I called on a different number and they lied and said Jaylin wasn't there, when I could hear him feeding them lines in the background! To make matters worse, the lady that answered (Megan) heard my situation and advised me to email over my photos of the extensions that clearly fell out, and then she would refund me after receiving them. I emailed them over the following business day and of course, never heard back from anyone. Collectively, I called and emailed another 10 times after that and they weren't answering. To make this story more wild, Jaylin's assistant, Ash, initially quoted me $350 during my consultation and then when they rang me up the bill read $700+. I nearly fainted. They purposely added a bunch of things they claimed I "needed" that I never asked for nor have I ever "needed" in my years of getting the same thing done on my hair. I didn't even know if I should write this review because I'm not the type to do things like this. However, I saw someone had a similar experience recently and thus felt inclined to share my story as well. Jaylin and team: you had the chance to make things right and I'm sad to say this was a nightmare that I hope no one else has to go through. My boyfriend said they must have to pay their rent because that's how much they're charging people. They are super nice up until you pay them. Then it's like you didn't even exist. Save your hair and your money, and go somewhere else.

Antthony is an absolute artist! I completely and totally trust him with my hair. He really listened to the kind of blonde that I wanted to achieve and continues to amaze me every time I see him for my highlights and/or balayage! On top of that, he has an amazing vibe and makes you feel completely comfortable. I won't see anyone else if I'm in need of more blonde!

I found this salon on yelp and decided to give it a go due to its rave reviews, and seemingly high percentage of happy clients. When I had my first consultation with Jaylin, I left feeling confident that we were on the same page and that I had finally found somebody who heard my concerns and was dedicated to getting me to the outcome I had envisioned. When I came back the next morning at 7am to start my transformation from brunette to a cool/baby balayage ombre blonde, we went over my whole hair history, cuts, colors, bad experiences, everything. I told Jaylin that about 7 years ago I box died my hair red (a dark wine/burgundy red) but I also remarked that since then, I've had many, many haircuts and hair dye jobs that have 99.9% most likely eliminated any trace of that color. While Jaylin and I went over my hair history, I expressed my growing frustration that every hair colorist Ive been to over the past year or two (and have subsequently spent over $1000 on) seem to pin their inability to lift my hair past a rusty shade of copper on the fact that, once upon a time, I dyed my hair red. I showed Jaylin my hairspiration picture to which he responded with, "Oh I can do that, no problem!" His enthusiasm was, in that moment, most reassuring. When we began my process, Jaylin and I were the only people in the salon, he explained to me that everybody had the weekend off for a festival and he would be the only one attending to the salon in the meantime, including a receptionist. During my 7 hours in the chair, the phone was ringing, and clients kept walking in for their respective appointments, to which i grew very nervous as to how he would attend to all of us with the same attentiveness, given the amount of money we were spending. At one point, there were 2 of us in foils, myself in the bowl, and Jaylin was trying his best to attend to all of us, as the phone continued to ring. When I was finally pulled from the bowl, Jaylin half dried my hair and again inquired how long ago I died my hair red (which was a huge red flag, no pun intended). After my hair was half dried, Jaylin hastily gave me a mirror and directed me outside to check out my new hair. I was very confused and frustrated because my hair was, again, a copper hue, and after being quoted $300+ (not including tip) I was wondering what I just paid for. His attention? The color service? I asked Jaylin about the shade of blonde and how I was going to get to the shade that we discussed in the picture, to which he replied that I'd just have to schedule another appointment/ service. Never being blonde before, I left with a grain of salt trying to accept that maybe I just needed one more session. My girlfriend ( who is blonde) convinced me to go back to him because he knows my hair history and would probably be able to give me the best chemical attention because he was the most recent stylist to do a process on it. Against my better judgement, I went back and had another consultation with Jaylin about the color of my hair, I showed him my picture again about the blonde I was trying to achieve, and again he quoted me, this time at $160. Luckily, I used his yelp check in coupon and got my glaze for free, therefore bringing my quote down to $120. I decided to go through with the process right then and there. Once it was time to rinse, he handed me off to his assistant, who was very sweet and warm, because another client had walked in. Jaylin's assistant brought me back to the chair and began to comb through/dry my hair. Jaylin then walked over to finish the job and only made two remarks while doing so, he asked his assistant what she put in my hair while I was in the bowl, and then proceeded to ask me exactly how long ago I died my hair red. I knew, once again, my hair was still going to be copper, if this was his immediate response while drying my hair. I left the salon that day, again, very frustrated. I called the salon a couple days later to speak with Jaylin about my frustrations. I asked if Jaylin was at the salon, to which Jaylin actually responded, "No he isn't, may I take a message?" It was so awkward, I realized it was him after I heard him speaking. I responded with my name and that I had some questions about my hair and requested a call back at his earliest convenience. Jaylin didn't bother to take down my number, and simply responded that he would have him call. To this day, now weeks later, I still have yet to hear from him. Although the majority of this salon's reviews are positive, my assumption can only be that this is ok for them.The mentality that "most" of their clients leave happy, is "good enough." I tried to give Jaylin the opportunity to help me solve this dilemma, but it doesn't seem imperative enough. It appears that the only thing that is important is fitting as many clients in as possible, regardless of them getting their value for their money. At this point, I really just want my money back, none of this was really worth it.

Cannot say enough good things about the salon. I have had a variety of services- cut, color, smoothing and each time have been very satisfied. My hair is healthy and makes me feel gorgeous! To give this salon only 5 stars doesn't even do it justice! I am so blown away by every aspect of this salon on the entire team... I could go on and on for days! This past saturday I frantically called the Jax & King salon to see if there was anyone willing to correct my color which had previously been done the day before and was awful (to say the least.) I was asked to come in as soon as possible for a consultation and possibly services to follow. I sped down to the salon, not knowing that I was about to strike gold! (As far as hairstylists/salons are concerned, they are absolute GOLD!) My entire experience was exceptional. Jaylin is incredible to say the least. He is an absolute hair magician. He was completely capable of taking my naturally blonde hair, that had been dyed deep brunette (with nearly green/grey looking ends) the day before, and take it back to a natural balayage blonde, that was more gorgeous than I could have ever imagined. I had initially just hoped to restore my hair color to something normal, I never expected to leave the salon loving my hair more than ever! In addition to Jaylin's unparalleled skill, he is also incredibly knowledgeable and a pioneer in the industry. He explained in depth each procedure he was performing on my hair, reassuring me that there would be zero damage done to my hair... Even getting my hair back to blonde, he never used bleach once. Instead of a harsh chemical stripping agent, a vegan, oil-treatment was used to remove the unwanted color from the day prior. When I left, my hair actually felt healthier than it had in months. I couldn't believe it after having two full colors in less than 36 hours. The entire team was outstanding. Warm, friendly, accommodating, and most of all, sympathetic to this 5-month-pregnant mess that walked into their salon! Not only did they make sure I always had a beverage, but they actually made sure that I had a few snacks, since I had come unprepared for a nearly 4 hour appointment! I couldn't have asked for better experience. I would more than recommend this salon to anyone who not only wants an incredible service, but a team that is genuinely committed to giving you beautiful and HEALTHY hair! PS. it is still unbelievable to me that Jaylin agreed to take on my transformation that day, as he was already completely booked back to back the entire day. He moved gracefully from chair to chair making each one of his clients feel like they were the most important person in the room. It was truly inspiring to watch him work! The entire team works synergistically to make sure a client is never left sitting and waiting. Everyone there is committed to exceptional service. So grateful I found this salon and stylist with such a beautiful spirit. :) read more

I was REALLY nervous to leave my hairstylist after 5 years, but after several pretty bad cuts/color(like my blond hair turned GREEN after the last color session!) decided to finally make a switch. I did a TON of research to find an amazing salon, which brought me to JAX & king. I absolutely could not be more thrilled with the experience/results I got. I was given Lindsey who evidently was a newer stylist at the salon which made me nervous at first, but she was FABULOUS! Seriously, the best cut and color I may have ever had!! She gave me a perfect shade of bright blond and got out all the green color that my last stylist had left. And she gave me the cutest LOB cut! Im totally sold! The cut and color was pretty pricy, but they were SUPER generous with the wine which made the session way more fun, so I'm rationalizing it as entertainment costs! :) read more

Two thumbs up to J&k hair sallon, working in San Diego on a business trip needed to get my hair done!!! Hate trying new places bc it typically takes me forever to find a good stylist....most hair stylist usually don't listen. Just because u are a guy it does not mean u don't care about your cut. Lindsey was a sweat heart and got it right the first time!!!!. She really is gifted and her hands work like magic. The Facility is super chic and the staff is very friendly. I think I may just have to give a notice to my current stylist! read more

Life saver! It had been many many years of living with a hair-color that I just wasn't happy with, until a friend recommended I have a consultation with Jay....a few days later I was beaming from ear to ear, finally the color I wanted. He is an absolute expert in color and the products and methods for coloring and highlighting are different from anywhere else I have been. I wouldn't ever hesitate to refer a friend to Jay, I know he would make them walk out very happy! read more

Julie is absolutely amazing!!! Shes so amazing I traveled from Northern California just to have her do my hair! I have always had the most difficult time finding anyone here in N. Cali that could color my Asian hair the way I wanted. It would either be too orange, red, or not light enough. I told Julie what I wanted and she gave some recommendations-one being that I should do a ombré to keep the maintenance low since I wouldn't be able to travel to La Jolla often for regular maintenance. I thought it was awesome that she didn't want to do something to my hair that I wouldn't be able to maintain. I am loving my color! It's the most perfect gradual ombré to ash blonde color. Julie knows her stuff!!!! Love her!! She is super sweet and friendly too!! Contact her! You will not be disappointed! read more

Jax and King is absolutely fabulous. I have been seeing Lindsay for years and followed her here when she started at J&K. She is the one person who I would trust with my fine blonde Norweigan hair. She is up to date with current styles and hair trends and is honest when something just wouldn't work for my type of hair. She's always patient and listens to what my concerns are regarding my unruly tresses and like a lion tamer, has my mane all silky smooth. I look forward to seeing her because I know I will feel refreshed when she's done working her magic. The salon itself is super comfortable and everyone that I've met there has been friendly and welcoming. I love their chairs and the TVs above the hair washing station. I was asked to be a model for a blowdry for Ashley. I was hesitant at first I have thick hair and she said she was learning. With that said, this was one of the best blow outs I've gotten in a long time. I booked a late appointment this Saturday and Ashley made me feel like a princess. She is gentle and kind and has blow dry skills that will keep me coming back to her. Can't wait to visit her again at Jax and King again! read more

There are no other colorists or hair stylist in the country as good as Jaylin and his wonderful team. Jaylin is a master and once you go to Jaylin you never go back to anyone else!!!!! I have had colorists before and now I realize none know what they are doing. When you sit down with any of the folks at Jax & King it is a whole different world of what color should be. read more

Jax & King has been my salon since June of last year and I cannot picture myself going anywhere else! The dedication to quality,service, and outstanding work is what makes Jax & King the only salon choice for me. I didn't know I would ever have fun, fashion colors without sacrificing the health of my hair. I constantly get compliments on my hair whether it's at its rich red or deep purple and no one ever believes it was accomplished without a drop of damaging bleach to my hair. For now purple is my color of preference but I know if I have a change of heart and decide to do something different, I know the team at Jax & King will make sure it's something fun, beautiful, and amazing all the while keeping my hair healthy. I don't know how they do it, but I can't imagine going anywhere else! I love my hair and it's all thanks to Jax & King :) read more

Got my hair colored for the first time from another salon in La Jolla and I ended up with my hair bleached even when I really didn't need it because I asked for a subtle balayage and so I was a little unhappy with how light and damaged my hair had become. I'm soo glad I went to Jax & King a month later to get my color corrected! Everyone over there is so amazing! They try their best to really understand the look you're going for and even if you're unsure, I'm pretty sure they'll give you a look you'll probably love. The atmosphere of the salon is so relaxing and welcoming, I just love the whole experience. I don't think I'd go to any other salon ever again read more

I traveled up to L.A. for years to the salon. Finally, a couple of years ago, one of my friends told me about Jaylyn. I think that I threatened his life if he fried my hair. He is brilliant and no more driving up to L.A.!! Everyone should know about Jax & King! As long as I have my standing appointment once a month! He is truly the best and his partner Paul is just as wonderful! They make you feel fabulous & look fab!! read more

Jaylin knows hair. He is the most knowledgeable stylist that I have encountered and he understands the value of a classic look. I'm not too adventurous when it comes to styling my hair and Jaylin knows how to customize my hair to what I want it to look like. However, this doesn't mean he's only limited to classic hair styles, he's well versed in other styles and I've seen him receive numerous compliments from clients that he's given trendy haircuts and color too. On another note, Jaylin is a genuine person and you can tell he truly has a passion for hair because it shows in the work he does and how he treats his clients -- a rare gem in the hair industry. Whenever you see him, you'll always catch a drift of his positive energy that stays with you throughout the day. In a nutshell, Jaylin is a wonderful stylist who will give you want you want and perhaps what you didn't even know you could want in the hair world! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Jaylin!! I have never felt so happy about my hair as walking out of his salon. His color is unlike any other color you will ever have done. I've had numerous compliments recently on how beautiful my color is. He is seriously amazing, and talented- there is no other way to put it!!!! I love his talent and his personality. I have been coming to Jay and Paul now I think over two years. They know hair, believe me. Jay saved my hair from an imminent haircut from a bad job done at another salon. He is a great colorist and Paul his husband comes regularly from the Vancouver salon I love the way he cuts my hair. They are super nice people too. I came to Jaylin from a co-workers recommendation and I'm so glad I did! She had beautiful, healthy looking blonde-colored hair and I wanted to to change my brunette hair to her color of blonde. I feared that going back to blonde would take several salon visits over several months and would ruin my hair... But nope! Jaylin was able to bring me to the blonde color I wanted to reach in ONE visit without completely frying it! (He uses NO bleach!) it took several hours, but the results were amazing and so many people were shocked by how great and healthy it looked. I LOVE my color and found my salon :) He has a great 'smudge' technique (ask him about it) that keeps my hair coloring cost effective. I only have to highlight my hair about 2 times per year, in between them I get two smudge appointments. Definitely try this salon--you'll be happy you did! read more

Tiffany T. did an amazing job with my hair when I came in! I hate getting haircuts because I'm a perfectionist and never feel like anyone ever gets my cut the way I like it, but she did everything just the way I wanted it :) I got so many complaints afterwards as well which was a plus and made me like it even more! I'm so happy I finally found someone that will be able to get it right in the future and can't wait to come back. The place is also super cute, so it was a pleasure just to hangout in there for a while AND Beetle Juice was even playing above the shampoo bowl while I was getting my hair washed which was entertaining. Just had my color done here. What an amazing experience! My stylist was Tiffany and she was on top of everything. From making sure I was comfortable to really listening to what I wanted to achieve with my hair color. My color came out fantastic! Not to mention my blow out, I never knew my hair could have SO much volume. The really cool thing was she explained to me how I could get the same results at home (though Im not so great with a blow dryer, lol). I have definitely found my new stylist and salon! I had my service done by Carla and I absolutely love my hair! I asked for a grayish color and she totally achieved it. I also love the cut! I have straight hair And most people make my hair very choppy looking but I love the way mine was cut! And what I loved most about Carla was that she was realistic about the color and how my hair will take to it. Me and my best friend were struggling to get our hair done since a year. Non of the places felt so promising to get the keratin treatment. I took my risk to try J&k with my best friend. It was so nice of them to accommodate me and my best friend at the same time when they were about to close. Amy and Tyler both of them were so amazing. AMAZING!! If i could get my hair done by Jaylin every day, I would! Before I found Jay I always left salons feeling content but never satisfied. It was often to chunky, not blended, still saw roots, a yellowish tint, not even, damaged looking, ect. It's not easy to get the perfect blonde. Jaylin found a way! He has a way of keeping the natural color woven in while still getting my hair "bombshell" blonde as we like to call it. The best part is the outgrowth. He manages to use some kind of magic to make the roots barely appear after 6 weeks. It must be the way he blends it because I never see a distinct line at the roots when its time for a touch up. We also do "pretend" hair cuts. He gets rid of all the dead ends and touches up my layers without getting rid of any length. My hair has never been so healthy. The thing I like the best is that he doesn't use bleach on me! He uses an ammonia free lightening agent. I feel like I'm not damaging my hair every time I get it done. My favorite part about this stuff is that it holds its bright blonde color, it never turns dull or yellowish after many washes like bleach sometimes does. The sad part about this story is that I recently moved to the bay area. All the things I left behind and the number 1 goes to Jaylin, I knew I would never find someone to do my hair the way he did. The first thing i did on my visit back to San Diego was make a hair apt with Jay. I've had it done once since and it's just not the same. I'm planning another trip around the time I need my next touch up. No matter where he or I move, I think I'll have to fly to him as he is irreplaceable! He's great company and always makes you feel welcome. I know the type of people he attracts so I can only imagine how great the other stylists and employees are that work there. For a while, I searched around for a hair salon in La Jolla that offered great dye service at a decent price. After reading positive reviews, I decided to make an appointment at J&K. The first appointment I made was with Juli, and I wanted to color correct my poorly ombred hair. She instantly made me feel comfortable, and was very easy to talk to. The bayalage job Juli ended up doing to my hair completely transformed it and gave me the results that I had hoped for. The next time I came in, my appointment was with Jaylin. This time I wanted a more drastic change, so I decided to cut several inches off of my hair and ombre it from brown to a greyish/chrome color. Like Juli, Jaylin made me feel right at ease and explained the whole process he would be doing in a very knowledgeable manner. He did an equally amazing job at dying/cutting my hair. I walked out of the salon feeling very confident and extremely happy with the results. Overall, the atmosphere of the salon and the talented staff provide a wonderful experience. There are different tiers of hair stylists with different price points, so you can always call and ask while booking. The first tier price point starts at $65 for a long hair cut, which is what I have always booked. It is only street parking available, but I have personally found parking pretty easily every time. Just beware there's street cleaning Thursday mornings so some parking spots nearby aren't available! I usually just give myself extra time, and if I arrive early they have a seating area to wait, or you can always look at the hair products at the front!

"I'm not in the business of hair, I'm in the business of confidence" - J.Lin Everytime I visit Jaylin, I walk out with sore cheeks from laughter, a heart warmed with love, and the most amazing hair EVER! This guy has seriously transformed my hair! I used to think that I had amazing cuts, great color, etc.... but Jaylin took my hair to a whole new level.... seriously!! I get more compliments on my hair than ever before! People literally stop and ask me, all the time, where I get my hair done.... or better yet, people assume that I always just left the salon. He's made the long, luscious, victoria secret dream hair become my daily norm. It's unreal!! His talent is honestly hard to put into words. I have to speak to his character a bit as well. From the quote at the beginning of this review, Jaylin truly inspires people. He is a beautiful soul that encourages and warms the lives of those he touches. In the middle of what feels like a belly-aching laugh session, you walk away with the most beautiful hair you've ever had! I also must mention how accommodating Jaylin is despite his incredible schedule. During the middle of managing hair for multiple shows in NYC fashion week, Jaylin managed to fit me in for a touch up. I recently took time off to travel, and had not been able to see Jaylin for months. Once we found out that we both were in NYC at the same time, he literally came to where I was, completely spiced up my hair, and absolutely made my day. With that being said, I'm still traveling, but always find a time and place to fly wherever Jaylin is.... for an amazing hair style.... and a hilarious, comforting, loving, creative, moving, powerful, helluva good time!! If you can get an appointment at Jax and King - do NOT hesitate. Owner and stylist Jaylin is a hair genius. From the moment I walked in I was greeted by name as though a long time customer. When I mentioned I wanted a fantastic short cut (from should length hair), Jaylin asked questions about how I take care of my hair (shower and go, don't even own a hair dryer or curling iron). Then out came the Ipad with pictures of a suggested cut. Once decided, a long massaging wash, comb out and hair cut begin. Usually I'm a quiet hair cut gal, but this time, the conversation flew as Jaylin and the crew gave me tourist, food and things to do suggestions (all written down on a list now used for my vacation plans). Besides a fabulous cut (really fabulous and that's after showering the next day when it still looks great), I was impressed with a couple things: 1. Excellent customer service from the appointment making phone call, greeting at the door to when I walked out the door. 2. Jaylin knows hair. After the initial cut, he then briefly dried and styled, followed by another finishing cut. He called it cutting the style in. In made perfect sense and after a wash, can see the difference such a second cut makes. 3. I don't live anywhere near La Jolla, but Jaylin made sure that my hair cut could be used as a template for my next trim when I get home. If you need just a trim or a radical change, Jaylin and Jax and King is the place to go. read more

I would give more stars if possible. This is a small, boutique salon where Jaylin and his team create amazing art. The interior is rich and warm. You feel like you're sitting in a cozy library surrounded by your favorite books. You may not immediately notice, but there are no mirrors on the walls. Jaylin explained to me that clients will pick themselves apart while staring into a mirror for hours. The experience is ruined by too much self criticism. I had never thought about that until my first session sans mirror. It was so relaxing to not stare into a mirror for a few hours. They carry and use both Kevin Murphy and Kerastase. Jaylin has assembled a great team of upcoming stylists. Not only is Jaylin hands on with his clients, he is constantly teaching his team at the same time. While listening to him talk about his craft, you realize how much experience he has. Every little detail is important when it comes to your style, your color, your cut. Before your first appointment begins, there is a detailed conversation between you and Jaylin. He tailors your appointment to your lifestyle and how much maintenance you care to have between appointments. For me, my hair is an investment. I only want the best products and people touching it. Jax & King is a total lifesaver!! After two DIY attempts at getting the ombré look using box kits, I was left with damaged and bright orange hair. I tried toning and fixing my hair myself, but nothing would work on my stubborn, long Asian hair. Finally, I decided that I needed some professional help and started looking for a hair salon. Jax & King was an immediate front runner, and after reading so many great reviews, I called and made an appointment. My first appointment was for a color correction and cut, in which Jaylin worked his magic and I came out with gorgeous dark ash blonde hair. My cut was fabulous too, and my stylist gave me the longer, face framing bangs I'd been wanting forever and made sure to respect my request to keep my hair as long as possible. My second appointment was to get me the dramatic blonde ombré look I was aiming for. Again, Jaylin didn't disappoint and somehow got my stubborn hair to lift and I finally was blonde!! My hair felt so smooth and healthy since he did all this without bleach:) I absolutely LOVE my hair and the fact that this look is something that's low maintenance (perfect for my lazy self!) while still letting me have some color in my hair. Jax & King was amazing, and I'll definitely be returning!! read more

I am not exaggerating when I say that for over 8 years I made the drive from San Diego to Santa Monica to get my hair done...For years I could not find a stylist in San Diego that could get my hair color (highlighted blonde) right without frying it, making it brassy, etc. Then about 3 years years ago, my sister introduced me to her stylist, Jaylin Youm. He is literally a "hair angel" sent from heaven! No one has ever done my hair better than Jay...he uses delicate color that manages to get the pale buttery blonde that I love without damaging my hair. He always gives me just the right haircut, be it a "baby trim" as he calls it, or adding more layers. He always insists on the perfect blowdry and even better, gives me tips on styling my hair! Jaylin and his salon girls (all family), have become part of my family! I love them...they are always professional, yet make me feel like I'm spending time with girlfriends that I've known for years. They are caring, compassionate and fun. I'm so happy that Jaylin has opened his La Jolla location for Jax&King. It is a little sexy jewel box...enter J&K and you will leave with a smile, feeling sexy and beautiful...just like all of us girls hope for! read more

Walking into Jax & King I was taken by surprise the unconventional flair and the character filled room . It's like a entirely new take on a stylists perception in a fashion forward field. I used to go to different salons unsuccessful in finding a stay worthy stylist and at most I would leave with an " OK" feeling ...far from "ecstatic " always having to undergo the trial and error lingo. I heard of Jaylin by word of mouth and ever since I have literally had an enlightenment of what it means to have a cut and color that leaves me feeling like I'm a new person! It means so much to have him take the initiative and ask what works and what doesn't , there is an evident passion he shows in every piece of work ! Even if I do not know of what I may want I have to say I feel at complete ease letting him do what he does best and I have always left feeling wonderful not to mention beautiful! No matter how far I live away from his location in La Jolla I would absolutely not think twice of course I'd drive several hours to have Jaylin style my hair . Jax and King is a wonderful salon. My appointments are with Jaylin and I have been going to him for haircuts and the most wonderful glaze color for over two years. He listens to what you want, is genuinely interested in what works for you and then creates an amazing shape to complement your face shape and lifestyle. He helped me go from a grown out bob (that my last stylist just couldn't shape into a cute long style) into the most fantastically easy to blow out long hair with face framing layers and movement. I feel like a supermodel every time I go there and best of all with his expert cut I am able to channel the supermodel at home when I blow my hair out myself! It is truly amazing. He is easily the best stylist I have ever been to. I also take my daughter there and he does an amazing job with her curly hair! She grew out her bangs and every haircut he snipped everything so that she never had a tell tale clump of bangs. They felt like an integral part of the haircut and so she always felt cute and confident while they were growing out. Go to Jax and King and experience the magic for yourself! read more

LINDSAY IS AWESOME!! I don't usually write reviews on Yelp but I really had to give Lindsay a shout out because she really rocked out my haircut. I'm from the east coast and recently moved to SD, I've been going to the same barber in Philly since I was a kid. I was recommended to Lindsay from a pal of mine that had been going to her for years. I am pretty picky about my hair for a guy but I know what I want and I have a ton of cowlicks on my head and every stylist I've tried so har in SD keeps cutting my hair too short which leaves me with a bunch of little "alfalfa sprouts" all over my head. LINDSAY WAS AMAZING!! Aside from the fact that she's super cool and offered me a micro brew when I arrived to the location she took the time to ask me all about my hair and concerns about my last cut and offered me a bunch of great options of different styles to keep me current and looking handsome, aside from that she showed me a couple of ways to style my hair that were easy for a guy like me to do..... It is difficult to say anything that has not been said about Jaylin's amazing work, but I will do my best. As someone who has a ton of very very curly multi-ethnic hair, I am very cautious in letting anyone come near me with a pair of sheers. After driving to OC for 9 years to get my hair cut, I found Jaylin several years ago after extensively researching stylists in LaJolla. I can truly say that he has been a godsend. Beyond being a trusted friend, he is absolutely the only person I will trust to cut, color and style my hair. Having "ethic" hair has allowed for several terrible cuts and blow outs in my day and he understands that like no other. He continues to give me the most beautiful and natural highlights as well as blow-outs (stick straight with no breakage), to date. Furthermore, he has often saved me from myself. He has a great way of suggesting alternatives that may be better suited for my hair type and color requests (he is always right in the end). His training coupled with his inherent talent makes him a true artist. I really can't say enough about his work and highly highly recommend. read more

I absolutely love this salon and it is very highly recommended! I've been in for a trim and to brighten up my hair and I was paired up with Amy Dickey. When I first arrived, I was greeted by the owner Jay who offered me something to drink along with a snack. The staff was very friendly and the salon itself is very beautiful and vintage. I went in not knowing exactly what I wanted to get done but with the help of my stylist, she helped me decide to add some lighter tones to my dark hair which was previously box-colored. She explained the process very thoroughly and helped me decide something that would fit with my personal style and something that required little maintenance. I've already booked a treatment for next week and I plan to continue coming here and recommending anyone I know who is looking for these type of services. I would refer anyone to Amy Dickey, I was very nervous about getting my hair done but I am very happy and cannot wait to go back her. read more

I had the pleasure of getting services done by Miss Tiffany Thater. She is amazing in so many ways. Her knowledge of hair care, styling, and creativity for cuts and color makes it easy to walk out smiling with a fresh new look! The salon itself is such a good time to be in. The décor and staff is wonderful and you feel very special because the salon is intimate and you get that one on one time with your stylist. Tiffany really listens to your needs and wants and gets the job done. This last appointment with her I got a Keratin Treatment and she saved my hair. I had been dealing with very dry and unhealthy hair and I walked out of the salon that day with practically new hair! Since I've washed it now my hair is smooth and silky and VERY easy to style and maintain. When it usually takes about 20 minutes to dry my hair after this treatment it took about 6 minutes and looked perfect! I HIGHLY recommend Tiffany for cut, color, make-up, and this Keratin treatment. read more

I recently went to get my hair done here with Amy and the experience was fabulous. For starters the salon is beautiful, so relaxing and chic. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with friendly faces and welcomed into a great ambience. I was immediately seated for my appointment and Amy took time before starting my color to ask about what I would like to improve on in hair care and helped me to understand why my hair had been acting so dry and brittle lately. Throughout my session I was so relaxed, drinking delicious coffee and engaging in nice conversation with my hairdresser. Not only did I get what I was looking for in a hair style, but the health of my hair improved dramatically. Having dealt with horrible hair procedures in the past at other salons, Jax and King has helped me to take better care of my hair, feel and look great. I was referred to Santiago through my wife. He has done her hair for years, between Imperial Valley and San Diego. He always manages to keep her hair looking sexy and up to date. She always has new ideas for different colors and different styles, and every time I am amazed in the outcome. "Santi" as we like to call him is a magician with hair and makeup. He has also done my wife's makeup for a wedding and for our engagement photos. We were both very excited for his move to Jax and King. My wife says it's an awesome feeling to tell people our stylist is in La Jolla, I agree. I thought the salon would be a very modern and stuffy type. It has a funky, eclectic, personal touch which I felt was awesome and chill. I recommend Jax and King to anyone looking for a reason to visit La Jolla, what better way to get your hair done, and walk the town feeling like a million bucks?! Jaylin truly has the magic touch. Being a guy I never envisioned myself going to a salon for style/cut. I would always tell barbers or stylists what I wanted with my hair and when they would finish it would feel like a fresh new hair cut but that's about it. I never really got the look I wanted and always assumed that it was because I just wasn't "pulling off the right look" Jaylin is the first person to take my input and make it a reality. It has come to the point where this is a typical conversation: Jaylin: what are we doing with your hair today? me: you are the professional, it's up to you. I have that much trust in his skill. From the moment you walk into this chic, intimate salon you feel welcome and right at home. The staff immediately offers you coffee or tea after a friendly greeting. Hair stylist, Summer, has been styling my hair for some time and is outstanding. She has many years of salon experience and has been trained in L'Oréal, Toni and Guy. She attends the L'Oréal Academy every year. She has an immediate sense of color and style for each of her clients and spends a great deal of time discussing your expectations and style wishes before she begins. She has a gift of transforming "drab to fabulous" with ease. It is always a wonderful spa experience topped off with a scalp massage during the shampoo phase. Today I went in for a Men's cut at Jax & King. It was my first time there and after many bad haircuts at other salons I have finally found one that works for me! Jaylin exceeded my expectations and really listened to me and what it was that I wanted out of a good cut. After he was done cutting me a lovely woman named Amy came over to style my hair. She asked me about the products I was using at home and about how they were performing for me. After getting some information from me she found a product that would suit me well and proceeded to style my hair. Not only did she style my hair but she also gave me tips on how to recreate the style at home. Jaylin has performed consistent miracles on my hair for now more than 6 years! I just want to say how confident I feel for all of my work and personal life. I speak publicly a lot, and I can count on good hair days every single time. That counts for a lot. Thank you Jaylin! Backstory: I looked for at least 5 years for a colorist who would rescue me from my every-other-week root touch up to cover my incoming grey sprinkles. I wanted to grow my base color out and have more freedom and fun with the color, but stay soft. It took about a year to make the full transition, and now, people literally stop me in the streets and in restaurants to ask me for my hair stylist's name. : ) Very grateful to have found such a great fit. read more

I have known Phavy for awhile now. There's no one who can work with my hair like her. I suffer from gray roots and always come to Phavy when it gets out of hand. We have great conversations and at the end of our meeting I feel as if my hair is alive again. She always knows what hair color and style works well for me. If it's not my roots I will most likely ask her to do highlights. I have always been a fan of that look and she never disappoints. ;) The moment I walked in I was greeted and accommodated. Best salon in San Diego - Jaylin and Paul are fantastic and everyone there is so helpful and nice. I always call with last minute requests and they always do their best to fit me in. No judgment, just great attitudes and fantastic hair cuts and styles (I don't color my hair so I can't comment as to that aspect of the salon). Plus everything making up the décor is upcycled and shows that they are eco-conscious and stylish at the same time, which is always a bonus. The only thing that could make the salon even more perfect [for me] is if they used Davines products since I am a personal fan of those over Kerastase. read more

At first, I was a little hesitant to try a new color on my hair because I have had a handful of bad experiences. Amy gave me exactly what I asked for. She asked me in depth questions about my previous experiences with hair coloring and how I felt about each different look. She is great at making you feel comfortable in her chair. I walked out of there feeling like a million bucks. I was so satisfied with my color that I even went back to get a keratin treatment and a haircut. I will no longer go with anyone else.
