It's a wonderland of products for an outdoor enthusiast: clothes and shoes for any activity, camping gear, biking gear, fishing gear, hunting gear and hats galore. They even have other miscellaneous items to keep non-adventurers excited like soaps, toys, dish towels, hot sauce, dog toys, etc. Truly, they have it all! And... it's all priced the same as REI. Plus, staff has always been helpful when I've asked questions. And... they allow dogs in their stores! It's been a great spot to take our pup to socialize. :D read more

I go in here occasionally for clothing or gadgets. In recent months I've bought some flashlights, Cocoons brand sunglasses, Patagonia windbreaker, and Timberland shoes. They carry a mixture of high-end brands and more obscure brands. This is mostly a self-service store, lightly staffed, but I've always gotten good service when I asked. Good local stop for outdoor products, gear, and maps. The staff is helpful and knows their stuff. They have a lot of gear in this life space, and it's nice and bright inside to see everything. There's a good size clearance section in the back as well. The bike shop is a nice add on too. read more

Trying to find another establishment in this part of neighborhood we came across Jax Outdoor Gear. Since this is the first time I was there, with A.W April 29th 2012, I feel its a small version of REI that I am used to. The prices are slightly higher on certain items. Perhaps it will be sufficient for other customers who do not wish to drive to REI and perhaps Jax Outdoor Gear can run REI for its money at this location. Since I am unfamiliar with Jax Outdoor Gear, I googled their website, and found out there are 6 Jax Outdoor Gear here in the USA, in which 5 of them are located NORTH of Denver, areas such as Fort Collins, Lafayette and Loveland. 1 of which is located at Ames, Iowa. Bought a $70.00 metal detector to find my wedding ring and was told that I could return it once I was done with it. Nope! Said ok to no shopping bag but I asked for something to wrap a glass item - and was handed some tissue paper and the person walked away. guess the days of good customer service is over, where person supposedly helping you asks if you would like them to do it. Bubble wrap to recycle/use would have been a better offer. I'll stick with REI and mostly online shopping if I'm on my own anyway. read more

A few times a year I got to this location to get boots for work. Today I was there about 9:30am with no other customers in the building. Went back to shoes spent about 20 minutes picking a few option off the wall. Two associates were laughing and giggling the entire time no one offer to help or get my sizes. They both looked over at me once then went back there conversation. Frustrated I just walked out. Jax is a great source for hunting and fishing gear. You can buy other sporting goods here, such as running shoes, but there are so many specialty stores that offer a wider range of product. However, if you need archery targets, ammo, cleaning supplies, or similar items for the outdoorsman, I can't think of anywhere else in Boulder County where you can find an equal selection. My visit here was fruitful, I was able to find most of what I needed, and was able to quickly get help to find the rest. I'd driven by this store dozens of times and had no idea it was so well stocked. I will be back. read more

Our family absolutely loves Jax Mercantile! Not only do they have a great selection of products, but also their classes have been very informative and a lot of fun. Our daughter took an interest in archery, and their range has been perfect for her to learn the sport. Their staff is always very friendly and helpful, and you can tell they really enjoy the activities for which they are selling supplies. I was a first time shopper to Jax's. Heard about it on the sportsman show on 92.5.. I went in looking for a rack for my Tacoma shell.. But, I did some shopping first. Kid In the camping department was really nice and informative. Then, I stopped by to look at some guns. Once again the guys there were super nice and informative.. And all the staff was very nice! Getting back to the rack for my Tacoma shell.. Well, no one in the bike shop could really help.. Fair enough because I wasn't in a rush. They did say they have a expert but he wasn't in. Fair enough! I like this store better than REI or Dicks for practical good quality clothing and shoes. They have fun stuff you didn't know you needed like a Jeep or a motor-bike + sidecar! They have dog-socks for a puppy to wear inside his dog-boots. The staff are very helpful. read more

They literally have everything you don't want and nothing you actually need. Kidding aside, it is a really cool store. Really random assortment of gear, tools, and knick knacks. The service is top notch as well. I went in once to get a map for a snowshoeing trip and a staff member sat with me for a while telling his favorite places and helped my route out our trip. I called to see if they had a particular bow in stock (which they did). I went in with my release and arrows to test the bow out on their range. The gentleman that helped me was friendly, but had no knowledge of bows at all. He said they did not have an archery person and couldn't get anyone to work there. I don't understand how Jax expects to sell these items when they can't even assist a customer with a simple test on the range? Considering each bow sold needs to be adjusted for draw length, weight, etc. I can't imagine many people are buying here. Some of these bows are in excess of $1,000, so it seems like it would be a good business decision to either staff this department adequately, or do away with it entirely. read more

I recently had an issue with a pair of hiking shoes that I bought this past summer. The team of associates jumped right into action. I purchased a pair of dog snowboots from Jax. I took my dog to hunt with them in South Dakota, and it was immediately apparent that the snow was too deep for the boots. I had wrapped his legs in equine tape to try and help secure them, but it was a futile effort in such deep snow. The boots stayed on less than 15 seconds. Jax let me return them, no questions asked. As has been the case every time I have gone to the store, the staff was friendly and very helpful. I love this place, and though these boots for my dog did not work out I will definitely be coming here for any other need I have. read more

The salesman, Peter, walked me through my purchase from start to finish and pointed me in the direction of a gun that would suit my needs, not the stores needs. I've been coming here for several years, and every time the customer service is exceptional. I sadly can't remember the names of all the employees who have helped me over the years, but I would like to mention the two who have stood out recently. Ryan, the bow tech, is infinitely patient, full of knowledge, and answers even my dumbest questions without hesitation. I took their bow shooting class with Ryan, and it was fun, confidence building, and he even managed to tighten up my groups despite my crappy shooting. Shout out to the other guy who works the bow desk (I apologize that I forgot your name). Both of them always greet me with a smile, and are incredibly helpful. In the age of internet shopping, employees like these two (and all the others I have worked with at jax) are the competitive advantage that retail stores need. Ouch... my bike isn't even rideable after my tune up. I took it in and they said they'd call after it was ready... a week later, we still hadn't heard anything so my husband stopped by. They hadn't done anything with it, so they did a quick "tune." Now, the chain won't stay on & it refuses to shift. read more

Disappointed in the bike shop.Bought a bike here,6 days later the rear derailleur falls off.The guy in the shop tells me I must've hit something,despite no evidence of impact(I didn't hit anything).I plead for them to work w/me,he cuts me a modest deal on a new derailleur,ok not ideal but I take it.Fast forward to the 30 day tuneup(they offer 30&90 day tune ups w/purchase),take the bike in,3 days later I get it back and it was essentially just cleaned.The rear brake cable is still stretched,I bring it back to point this out and am told that cable has been cut cause the set screw was tightened too much.Ok,they put the thing together,seems like they should fix the cable...nope I gotta buy a new cable...Which I will cause I want a functioning bike,however not from Jax.They will not see another dime from me. read more

I'm really happy to see a business take over the old Ace Hardware building. I loved that Ace Hardware, but I have to say, JAX smells better. It's also a really fun store to browse in: from women's clothing to gardening stuff, to hunting, fishing and camping gear. This place is not for the budget shopper, but they've got a lot of neat stuff you don't see elsewhere. It was a little weird to me last time I was there, when I looked up and noticed a salesperson inadvertently pointing a gun at me. He was showing it to another customer. I'm not anti-gun, I just LOVE gun safety. So go ahead and sell them, just don't point it at the chunky, middle-aged lady trying to find the birdseed. Or, just don't point it at ANYBODY. Otherwise, the service has been fine, and I'm looking forward to Christmas shopping here - lots of good stuff for my husband. read more

while driving home from work one day, I found myself in midst a snow storm. I left early, but unfortunately for me alot of other people had that same idea. As I was almost home the traffic came to crawl and then to a gridlocked stop. I decided to pull out of traffic and into a shopping center and looked in this store, Ive been in this store before when it first opened and noticed that it mainly stocked highly expensive hunting, fishing and camping gear and clothing, to which I have little to no interest.. Well, it just so happens that they remodeled part of the store into a bike shop with a service area. The prices on the bikes seemed to be reasonable and the clerk was friendly and helpful. After 3 hours of waiting for the traffic to die down I finally was able to make my way home only to see that the cause of the traffic jam was a small out of state car broke down in the middle of the street. read more

Stopped in a couple of days ago with an odd water line problem. Talked to Byron who managed to find a solution for us. He probably spent 10 minutes searching and finding the parts we needed. So, instead of ordering a part on-line for $20+, we spent a bit over $4 for Byron's solution. And it worked! read more
