I had zygomatic implants placed by Dr. Neugarten on 3/8/21. I have to say that Dr. Neugarten was so professional, competent, courteous and friendly. Could not have asked for a better surgeon. I always had issues with a very exaggerated under-bite since I was a kid. I first started with braces at the age of 13 and my teeth looked great but by the time I was 17 my jaw kept growing and the process went completely backwards again and I had my same under-bite. At 17, my dentist at the time recommended I go to visit a surgeon to hear about the possibility of getting jaw surgery. That surgeon absolutely terrified me, explaining my jaw would be wired shut after the surgery and set a very intimidating image for me. After that discussion, I pushed back the possibility of doing the surgery another year until I discovered Jay Neugarten and his team. They explained step by step the process I'd be going through and said I WOULDN'T need to get my jaw wired shut, as that was a "way of the past." This was music to my ears.... The best decision of my life was trusting Jay to perform this surgery for me. Dr. Neugarten performed my double-jaw surgery (more technically, a "Lefort 1 osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, and genioplasty"). In my life, I have seen three orthognathic surgeons: Dr. Neugarten and two others. One of the other surgeons had already operated on me. I cannot stress this enough: if you are considering orthognathic surgery, you should see Dr. Neugarten and his group. I had struggled with braces most of my life and had already had one major jaw surgery. Dr. Neugarten completely identified all of the problems my jaws were creating. In addition to orthodontic challenges and an asymmetric appearance, I also had a very narrow airway which was causing sleep apnea. I woke up many times every night. The narrow airway affected me in other ways as well. Any allergy or head cold closed off my already small airway and would get me too sick to sleep or work. I wasn't aware of just how much this was affecting me, as it was my "normal." Since the surgery with Dr. Neugarten, I sleep much better. I dream a lot. I'm rarely sick. My voice sounds clearer. My braces are finally off, and my bite is better than my orthodontist could have hoped for. My face is symmetric. I feel great. It's not just Dr. Neugarten that makes NYCOMS great. It's the whole operation. The staff facilitated all insurance communications. They helped schedule ancillary physician appointments (e.g., sleep study, endoscopy). Lisa was awesome and helpful. I strongly encourage you to go there. Notice that the office is not overwhelmed with piles of paperwork and noise. Notice that the equipment is modern, clean, and ideal for what they are doing. Notice that the staff is polite, professional, and not overworked. Notice that the staff is easily reach-able and follows up with you quickly and clearly. These things add up. I'm not sure even where to start...and yes if I could give zero stars I would. Trying to figure out which was the worst part of this experience and realize it all was equally as vile. I was treated so rudely by the staff upon entering...."insurance cards and ID"...no hello...they are all clearly stressed and even when I called for the coveted appointment I was cut off before finishing a sentence as they rushed through the dental factory procedure annoyed I was even asking to be seen......I waited for some time and was brought to an exam room where I was left for minimum half an hour...someone came in at some point and asked if the dr had come in...I said he hadn't...she then called to another colleague letting her know that he hadn't come in yet....another woman came in to tell me that they did not forget about me and the doctor would be in soon. This of course meant they DID forget about me and the doctor was probably on his way home when they realized he left without seeing me....finally in came his royal highness not even bothering to make eye contact with me or introduce himself as this was our first (and definitely last) meeting...no apology for forgetting about me as clearly he doesn't consider my time of any value in his kingdom.....instead he walked directly to a computer in the corner of the exam room and asked what was going on with his back to me punching in information. He then proceeded to posture and exude the most insincere and arrogant lack of care. It was really a bad doctor skit from some sitcom or something aimed at pointing out exactly this horrible behavior and exaggerating it grossly for effect.....except this was real. He was embarrassing to himself only...he was foolish. It was the most ridiculous experience with him not at all listening and instead speaking in a condescending manner that again, was impressive in it's cluelessness...he probably considers that his bedside manner. When he finally did grace me with a two second oral exam he did not even look at the area I came in for. He rudely spoke to his assistant who was a lovely woman totally undeserving of such disgusting treatment. He offered nothing of any help....instead he gave a referral which I would never take from him for any reason and then off he went...just before leaving he did his sad puppy face which I think was to express care and concern. Not sure...as the whole scene was so badly orchestrated I just couldn't wait to go....like a bad show you just want to end. I paid the high price of this circus ticket and left as fast as I could. Now to billing. They billed it as medical under a different doctor's name. When I called and said it was an oral exam I at first was told that that is not how it was described in the records as though it were my fault! When I said there is clearly confusion as he is a dentist and I came for an oral exam...I was quickly asked if I wanted it billed to my dental coverage as the obvious was now in front of this employee and so she could finally see it. I said yes as it was an oral exam....I mean can it be anymore insane....I am only writing this because maybe it will help someone who thinks this is a good place to go and get really good care. Dr. Neugarten performed a double jaw surgery and genioplasty for me. I don't have any permanent damage from the surgery. The nerve on my chin is partially numb but that doesn't bother me and some nerves in my upper right teeth were impacted but with time they partially regenerated too. I think Dr. Neugarten is a very skilled surgeon. His office staff is great and the technology they use to prepare you for the surgery is high-tech. I like the results of the surgery, I like the way I look and I have almost zero side effects. The only thing I didn't like much was the doctor's bedside manner like arrogance and lack of patience. read more

I was referred to Dr. Neugarten by my orthodontist Dr. Lemchen. I was 33 when I first visited NYCOMS, I arrived having some previous dental and orthodontic work done in Seattle that I was VERY unhappy with. I had been wearing braces for three years, I was very uncomfortable and my bite was completely off. I had a complicated case. Dr. Neugarten recommended orthognathic surgery to correct my malocclusion. I was extremely hesitant to undergo this surgery, so hesitant, I pushed against doing the surgery for an entire year. One year later, I gathered the courage and I'm now six months post-op from double orthognathic surgery. I couldn't be happier, probably the best decision I've made in my life. Having survived being hit by a car as a pedestrian, I sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including a mandible that was broken in three places. I had jaw surgery immediately following the accident that entailed having my jaw wired shut for weeks. Despite this, the ability to open my mouth decreased to about 11 millimeters (1/2 inch). Luckily, I found Dr. Neugarten, who is truly a miracle worker - along with his staff - as we planned for double TMJ replacement. His words - "this is in my wheelhouse." No jaw wiring, only rubber bands. Everything he said and did was spot on in terms of the surgery itself and my recovery. After many weeks of physical therapy, I was able to open my mouth about 32 millimeters!!!! When I see Dr. Neugarten, I remind him that he gave me back the ability to eat and 20 pounds! Miracle Worker My son was born with a small airway that caused him to have severe obstructive sleep apnea since birth. As he grew, my son's sleep apnea worsened and other treatments such as having his adenoids and tonsils removed and having his epiglottis stitched up failed to improve his condition. We were referred to Dr. Neugarten by our ENT and were impressed from our first meeting with him and his team. My family spent several hours in consultation with Dr. Neugarten over multiple meetings and he made us feel comfortable. He took a LOT of time to answer each of our questions and to address our concerns. He won't necessarily tell you what you want to hear - he will tell you the truth and prepare you for what the procedure will entail, including recovery. Much more importantly, he made our son feel comfortable. Dr. Neugarten performed a surgery called mandibular distraction surgery that involves pulling the lower jaw forward in order to increase the diameter of the airway to fix the sleep apnea. Just thirteen days following surgery, a sleep study showed that our son's sleep apnea was 100% gone! The difference in lifestyle for our son is incredible - he has much more energy and is much less grouchy during the day. We have had numerous follow-ups with Dr. Neugarten and during each session he has made our son feel comfortable and at ease. Dr. Jay Neugarten is the most amazing, expert, knowledgeable, committed and compassionate oral surgeon I have ever met. Dr. Neugarten and his entire team, Dr. Epstein, Ben, Lisa and Jill, along with everyone else in the office are not only professional and polite, they are truly caring and supportive. This is the team that gave me my life back. At age 63, I first met Dr. Jay Neugarten in March of 2015 when I was referred to him by my dentist to discuss dental implant options. All of my other multiple attempts at implants had failed and had left me in an improperly fitting denture. For me, it was truly demoralizing to be in a denture. Worse than that, it did not stay in. In May of 2015 I underwent zygomatic implant surgery, an amazing procedure, which placed four implants (2 on each side) into my cheekbones. I was able to leave Dr. Neugarten's office the day of surgery with fixed teeth. Sadly, I became infected over the summer and ultimately these implants failed. I was an emotional and physical mess. Still, in what remained of my fixed teeth, the compassion, support and expertise of Dr. Neugarten, Ben and his staff, they got me through the summer as Ben was able to wire a tooth so that I could smile at my son's engagement party. Throughout that summer and into 2016, I was in constant contact with Dr. Neugarten and his team. I cried and laughed with them. On January 4, 2017, I underwent the procedure again, this time 6 zygomatic implants, (3 on each side) were placed in my mouth. Last week, I bit into an apple. My new teeth are not only beautiful, they are fixed. I can eat and smile without fear or hesitation. I can hold my head high and look at people when I speak with them. I've never had surgery before, so going into the office I was very nervous and didn't know what to expect, but everyone in the office was so nice and courteous. There was no waiting time what so ever, and I was very impressed how on top of their appointments they were. It was almost like they had it down to a science. I was receiving wisdom teeth surgery. I had four impacted teeth. He did an incredible job, and I woke up with no pain and it resulted in a very speedy recovery. What an outstanding doctor..When life leaves you hopeless he brings hope to you.. He's very confident and knowledgeable about his work and abilities.. My son was born with a small jaw and had an airway obstruction. Dr. Neugarten saved my son from having a tracheostomy tube. My little one stop breathing numerous of time before Dr. Neugarten got a hold of him. He will stop breathing while eating, sleeping, reclined in my arms and all activities a newborn does. We was hopeless and nervous obout the out come that was going to occur with our 4 week old son. Upon getting his bronchoscope procedure they realized that he had a small jaw that caused his tongue to flop into his airway. Then our life changed when Dr. Neugarten was refer. He explain everything in details and gave us a visual as well. He performed the surgery and my son hasn't had any non breathing episode. This doctor changed or life and gave life to my son. I was referred to Dr Neugarten by Dr. Craig Sirota, an amazing prosthodontic surgeon. They work as a team together with Dr. Ralph Esptein who performs the general anesthesia. I can't say enough kind words about Dr. Epstein. He is a mensch. I was terrified to do the surgery incase it triggered off the trigeminal neuralgia I had suffered from for many years. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is the worst pain known to mankind & it has the highest suicide rate. But when I met Dr Jay Neugarten, I was immediately impressed. He was very professional and conscientious and he took the time to explain everything to me. I found him be an all around nice guy. Also, from the minute I walked through the door, the staff were all very warm and friendly. Lisa who works with Dr. Neugarten has a lot of empathy and compassion and she put me at ease. I had my surgery about four weeks ago. Dr. Neugarten called the next day to make sure I was doing well. This is clearly someone who cares about his patients.
