Pre-pandemic, the (catered) pizza from Jay's used to be stellar, crispy and tasty, reminiscent of real Italian pizza. Since the pandemic, the catered pizza is always undercooked - chewy dough in the middle, ok on the crust edges I am not sure if this is a post-pandemic change in the cooking method or if these large orders (12 pizzas) are now simply too hastily prepared. But next time we cater pizza from Jay's, I am bringing my lunch. read more

Used Jay's for the first time to cater a work event. It was both breakfast and lunch for 75 people. The online ordering system is great. Although it would better if you could place a breakfast and lunch order in one "shopping cart" instead of having to do two orders. That's minor though. The price was perfect! The portions and quantities were over the top. We had so many left overs. The delivery person arrived exactly as scheduled for both breakfast and lunch and got everything set out quickly. The delivery man was very nice and helpful. They even called me after I placed the order to confirm everything. Our order: Continental breakfast (scones, muffins, bagels and assorted spreads), coffee, juice and water. Sandwich trays (assorted meat and veggie), green bean salad, pasta salad, deviled eggs, cookies, water and soda. My procurement rules at work are pretty wonky and I needed an email from Jay's regarding two invoices for the same event. I called and got the email I needed in 30 seconds. Now, that's service. They do pretty well for breakfast as well as lunch. The bagels are just ok, they have good fruit salads and the most adorable mini donuts (Apparently the regular sized ones are much too big for the average person). For lunch, they make some fantastic sliders (regular burger, buffalo chicken, Philly cheesesteak, and vegetarian) as well as a salad that is loaded. Overall, it's pretty great. read more

Neat little somewhat hidden space. You walk down the stairs off of Charles Street and into a nice little deli with salads and prepared hot foods and soups. Things like fried chicken. They even have deviled eggs like my grandma made. Across the street from University of Baltimore...its catering is a fixture on campus as well. A great place to grab a quick bite between meetings but otherwise unremarkable and not unusual, but solid when you want good quality food that is fast ...but not "fast food". read more

What to say about Jay's? Well. It is really nothing special. It is a part of the Charles Street conglomerate that is owned by the same people, and is a decent option if you're stuck in the area (at school...) for a hot sandwich, and their specials are sometimes really good, but it's nothing to go out of your way for. They have a convenience store level assortment of snacks and beverages in addition to their hot food. I usually get the broccoli & mushroom sandwich on a sub roll instead of the bread it comes on. It's almost like a vegetarian cheesesteak. It's pretty decent. Very melty, though, so be prepared for a mess. I also just tried their Maryland Crab Soup for the first time, and they get props for it being homemade (sometimes a rarity around here). It could use a little spice though, so you may need some pepper or hot sauce or something. Their fries, when fresh, are spectacular. It's a little confusing inside. Sometimes you order in the back, sometimes in the front, sometimes at the counter. I never really know where to stand while waiting for my food. You kind of have to feel it out. Service is hit or miss. I recommend calling ahead, or ordering and walking to Starbucks then coming back, because it can take a while for your food. read more

If you've ever wanted to experience the maddening confusion of a Third World airport without ever leaving Baltimore, this is the place for you. All I wanted was three slices of cheesecake. I went to the Order Here sign, and proceeded to be ignored for an uncomfortable period of time. Then I was directed to another counter, where I was also pointedly ignored. Meanwhile, the people who worked there jabbered and yelled at one another, doing their best impression of a World War I foxhole's worth of chaos, all while customers stood around hungry and confused. I gave up after ten minutes because I had a bag of groceries that needed to go in the fridge. I asked to speak to a manager, though I don't know why I was kidding myself. I have not physically been to this location, but I have ordered catering there twice now remotely fro training events we have had there. I have dealt with Kristy. She has been fantastic and great to deal with. I went with them the second time because I was told the food was good the 1st time. The first time I only used them for sandwiches for one lunch. The 2nd time I used them for 2 separate lunches because they had good food and can delivery and set up. For any corporate event in the Baltimore area I will use them. read more

This review is for Jay's Deli on North Charles street right by Penn Station. Now when I think of good Deli, I think of NYC. Practically no other city has been able to come close. Maybe Maimi because of all the New York retirees. Anyways, Jay's definately tries and generally does a good job. They had the required chopped liver, but no tongue. The deviled eggs looked fresh and the hot bar looked really tastey. I like the fact that they have a nice selection of beer and wine, and that everything looked fresh. The chicken who provided the legs for my lunch clearly ran across the Gobi Desert without adequate hydration because by the time it arrived on my plate, it had dried up to dark brown bones and filmy skin. We ordered catering for breakfast and lunch from Jay's for a three day training at my job. Overall, everything went well and I would use Jay's for catering purposes in the future. People raved about the food! We wanted to provide everyone with a variety of options and Jay's was very accommodating in providing different options for breakfast and lunch daily. On Monday we had fruit, danishes, bagels, muffins and coffee for breakfast. I didn't try the breakfast, but I sincerely regret not getting a danish. They looked delicious and I find it hard to resist a good cheese danish! For lunch we had two types of soup (vegetable and cream of crab), salad, bread sticks and cookies. The soup was great! I tried the cream of crab and it was creamy and flavorful. The amount of crab was perfect. On Tuesday we had pumpkin bread, bear claws, and fruit for breakfast. Again, I didn't try the breakfast, but the bear claws didn't seem to be a favorite. We had a variety of wraps, pasta salad, and some type of cake/pie combination for dessert. The wraps were tasty. They weren't spectacular, but I'd eat them again. The cake/pie/brownie thing was very good! I don't know what it was exactly, but it tasted like a brownie with icing, so no complaints from me. Wednesday's breakfast was bagels, croissants, and fruit. I finally tried breakfast and I definitely picked a good day! The bagels were so fresh and delicious. The chocolate croissant was flaky, chocolate-y and soft. Delicious! Lunch was ziti, a second pasta dish (some type of spicy chicken), salad, and garlic bread. The ziti was really good! It was cooked well, flavorful, and super cheesy. The fruit tarts for dessert were way too sweet though. Not my favorite. The service was just okay and honestly was the difference between 3 and 4 stars for me. The service was really good until the last day. We scheduled breakfast to arrive at 8:30, but it was delivered at 7:40. Now, I think it's better to be early than late, but our building doesn't even open until 8! Fortunately my co-worker had arrived early and was able to sign for the food, but I think it's a bit ridiculous to show up 50 minutes early, especially when it's before normal business hours. read more

I've been ordering from you guys for a long time. Lately my ordering experiences have been disappointing to say the least. In the past two weeks I've been told that "delivery is impossible" due to traffic. Another time I was told that it would be an hour and half to two hours as you had no delivery person. Today, I ordered Diet Coke, as I always do and receive Coke. When I called back to get it corrected, I'm told "all the paperwork says Coke". That a lot of attitude. So I headed into Jay's on N Charles because I've had their food at the Bloomberg cafe at JHMI and I'll admit I actually stopped eating at that location BECAUSE THEIR STAFF IS INTOLERABLE. Seriously is customer service non-existent in this city? For working inside a graduate school I would assume the staff in the kitchen would at least try to hide their misery. I was expecting different at this particular location. Boy was I wrong. The only pleasant interaction I had was with the woman who rang up my order. As far as the rest of the staff went I was shot looks of disdain and disregard. Whoever is managing this location needs to have a staff meeting about demeanor and customer service. This place actually deserves 4 stars for the quality of their Reuben and Deluxe Philly cheesesteak sandwiches but I'm really disappointed with their staff. read more

HORRIBLE DELIVERY SERVICE!!!! I placed and order for something as simple as a Cloak and Dagger, spinach salad, chips and a soda are 1:12 pm in the afternoon. After dosing off for over and hour I realized my food had never been delivered. After calling back a good hour and a half later I was told the food was on its way. A good 20 mins after that I called to cancel the order since it's clearly almost 2 hrs late. It was 3 pm when I received my food. I WILL NEVER EVER GET FOOD DELIVERY FROM THEM AGAIN. The sad thing is the lack of communication with letting the person that ordered know there may have been issues with a delivery person. Yet the woman I spoke with was pleasant and helpful yet the overall service was HORRIBLE. Just remembered why I stop getting food delivered. Uninspired box lunches for a seminar. Passable, but it would not have been hard to do better. Every box included mustard and mayo, which seemed odd for a tuna salad. I'm actually trying to write a review for Jay's Cafe at the top of the Bloomberg School of Public Health building at Johns Hopkins. What used to be just the 9th floor cafeteria at the 'Hygiene' building, as it were, is now a bastion of food choices ranging from sushi to burgers and vanilla dirt. Now that I'm a full-fledged student, and practically living in this illustrious building, I have to pay homage to those that feed me there. Jay's is one such place. The food isn't really what I'm here to write about though. It's decent cafeteria food; what do you really expect? It's the view. Notice I mentioned the ninth floor. I didn't mention the wrap-around windows that spoil diners with a view of south Baltimore all the way to the Inner Harbor and beyond. It is truly gorgeous, even on a cloudy day. Today, however, it was quite clear, and the red bricks looked so inviting down below on all the quaint inner city rowhouses nearby. Church steeples, the harborfront, the downtown city skyline...all of it just waiting for you while you munch on your lunch. You don't even have to buy lunch there; you can bring it and eat at the tables with friends, colleagues, whoever. If you do buy lunch, let me know how the salad sampler is. Those balls of egg, tuna, and potato salad look intriguing to this starvin' student! Better yet, you will overhear some amazing conversations about topics like infectious diseases and the latest and greatest public health research. :) For all the nerds out there... read more

My job apparently has a history of having meals catered from Jay's, but the past 4 or 5 times I've had it I've passed and gone and bought lunch elsewhere. Yes, I turned down FREE Jay's lunch in favor of paying out of my own pocket for a sandwich somewhere else. The pizza is lousy, in particular the crust fails on both taste and texture, and is never done well enough. The sandwiches are lackluster. And this morning I actually had a chocolate chip muffin that was made with lemon cake mix. There was, in fact, an array of muffins made with said lemon cake mix: blueberry, cranberry...all terrible. I, and a good deal of the office, have started lobbying to stop buying food from here. And frankly, I'd never spend my own money to eat here. read more

When we called the person who picked up the phone said it would be a $15 minimum order, fine, so we thought. This place was recommended to me for catering a large function. Tried to email Kristy for catering twice on 2 different days (no catering phone number was provided) and never got a response. When I called the main number I was told I couldn't be helped till 2 days later because no office staff available on the weekend, that their computers went down yesterday, etc, etc. So, I popped over to Panera's website, placed my $500+ catering order online, and won't ever contact Jay's again. I'm writing this review for their Johns Hopkins School of Public Health location. For a deli located in one of the world's premiere 'hygiene' buildings, it has given me food poisoning too many times. This is the building my department takes prospective students to for lunch. The view is amazing, but one particularly unlucky recruit most likely spent the night before his interview the same way as me: hunched over a toilet. Today I tested my luck again, and as I write this I am in the clutch of another bout of food poisoning. Stay away if you value your health. I placed an order with Jay's for a continental breakfast for a work-related event for 100 people. Online ordering was easy. I immediately received written confirmation and a telephone call to clarify the order. On the day of the event, the delivery and set up staff arrived a little early (which was great) and started to set up the food and drinks in the conference room. The selections were: assorted bagels, coffee cakes and sweet and savory croissants. Also included coffee and tea - regular and decaf, assorted juices, bottled water, fruit salad, cream cheese, jelly, butter, lemon wedges, ice, serving utensils, eating utensils, tablecloths, cold and hot cups, napkins and ice buckets. The delivery and setup staff were amazing. Kudos to Ayo and Fazle! The food was outstanding- fresh and flavorful. Would definitely order from Jay's for future events. read more

The staff is polite and the food is good but the service is super slow and it just seems really unorganized. Often there is too much staff behind the counter and it creates a lot of confusion and causes the long waits. The owner can be rude to the staff when it's super busy and that's a huge turn off. read more

So I must admit that when looking for a local caterer, I checked out websites before checking Yelp. After calling Jay's, I found the terrible/mediocre reviews here and decided to give it a shot regardless. Full disclosure: I let the people at Jay's know that their Yelp reviews were bad and I was hoping to change that (i.e. give me good service). They certainly rose to the challenge. I catered a deli lunch for about 12 people at my office and found the whole process really pleasant. Kristy was great to work with 2 days out and even helped me edit my order when my budget changed last minute. The food was delivered on-time and spread out without disturbing the meeting in the same room. The food was pretty good overall, especially the fresh fruit salad and veggies. We did classic deli with added fruit and dessert. Everyone enjoyed and there was more than enough to go around. I'll definitely use them again. read more

I was in charge of food & beverages for a corporate event held in downtown Baltimore. This was an event where we were looking to impress the attendees, so quality food that arrived on time was a must. I must have talked poor Heather's ear off checking on our order almost every day, but she was polite and courteous, and always confirmed the order with me. She was a great rep.
