Jay and Silent Bob own this. Silent Bob is a Silent Partner, of course. The Gyro and the attitude did nothing, nor hot dog I got a Hot Dog and a Gyro, and the prices were pretty damn decent. The hot dog was ok, but definitely not something I would ever go back for. The wait time is eternal when they're busy. About 5 people in line ahead of me and about 10 mins to get served and 5 to 7 more for the food. Wasn't expecting that. At least the prices are ok. But my goodness, their Republican, good-old-boy signs are so awful. Proud Republican, met all the Republican presidents, member of Republican party. Most of your customers are dirt poor blue collar NE Ohio types who have barelya spare dollar. They're not interested in your capitalist ideologies. Keep them out of the restaurant, no? The Gyro meat was pretty good actually, and generous in terms of portion and price, but the bread was cold and it tasted sweet which is ew. I mean the bread and veggies on this thing, and the white sauce, were so bad that I gave 4 fifths of it away. Disappointed AF. Picked off some of the meat though. Nom. I ordered 4 chilli cheese dogs with onion and chilli cheese fries with onions. There were no onions and when I called I was told by the cashier that she asked if I wanted onions and I didn't answer. I said I wanted onions so they didn't ask and if they had asked and I hadn't answered wouldn't you ask again thinking the customer hadn't heard you. Instead I got the "you're an idiot, I asked if you wanted onions you should have replied" treatment. I just wanted some onions put on my food. I will never eat there again and wouldn't suggest it to anyone else. Mistakes get made, that is fine but don't act like I am an idiot. Every chilli cheese dog I ever ordered I ordered with onions. I don't think the hotdog was particularly good. It was cheap but pretty small. The chilli on top was just ok. The gyro was not really different from street vendors. Perhaps this location was not particularly good... We ordered our food to go thinking that we would sit outside. When we saw that the outside seating was wet from the afternoon rain, we wanted to eat inside. However, the people in the store said it would cost an extra dollar to sit inside. I thought that was kinda lame. We gave a good tip when we paid. For them to ask for a dollar made it seem like they didn't really want people to sit inside. read more

I've been going to his place for hotdogs my entire life. Anytime I'm back in Youngstown I definitely stop through and grab a few.

There's something special about this place....inside and out. This is a very basic GFS hot dog 70/30 pork/beef....but the time it spends on the flat top gives it a nice flavor. Now I wasn't blown away by this place and it certainly wasn't one of the best dogs I've ever had.....BUT you have to acknowledge that this is a wonderful dive in a "non strip mall" setting where you can grab an everything hot dog for $1.20. I had two dogs inside....went out to my car and said to myself....."OK....one more". I had another loaded dog to go....drove to the back of the parking lot along the fence and had a cold beer with that dog......bliss. The only thing better than the dogs is the character this place exudes. read more

Love the grape leaves. They are not typical. Most places use the pickled grape leaves, and the taste is a little bitter, which is good. But the grape leaves at jays are larger more stuff than any others I have had. And they are tender. They taste like they have been steamed in chicken stock. Really a great taste. And the dogs are great, and cheap. The chili sauce is your typical Greek style chili sauce. Couple hot dogs with chili and onions some mustard. Order of grape leaves. I am a strong fan of this place, although I feel like at any moment this place is going to be shut down by the health department. Aside from the greasy, dinginess and potential from getting Hepatitis just from sitting there.....I enjoyed the food. This is a nickel and dime you place. They charge for everything. My first experience with Jay's was at the one in North Lima that I thought was great so was excited to try the one in Boardman. Not sure where to start my review as i kinda feel like I should give them just one star as the place really does give new meaning to the term "greasy spoon" but their gyro is so tasty that just isn't fair so giving them a solid 3. While eating I watched a steady stream of regulars coming in for their hot dogs for lunch and the guys working knew every single one of them so how can you go wrong? But there's something I learned while being in the restaurant business, if the customers can see the "filth" what they don't see is really bad ! During a recent visit to Jay's my experience was very basic and bland to say the least. The food was very reasonably priced and came out quick...but the overall cleanliness of the restaurant is severely lacking. I took my food to go because I did not want to sit in the restaurant because of its condition. If anything I believe a long overdue visit by the health department is in order. My hotdog was ok and fries way to done. If your looking for low quality food then this is your place...otherwise I would not recommend visiting this place. read more

This place is a Boardman institution, which I respect, but it is showing its age with a very dirty, dingy interior. The gyro I had left a weird chemical taste in my mouth. For those old timers Jays started in downtown Youngstown, I believe around the WWII days. The steel mills were busting at the seams and after work the mill workers dove in for Jays for hotdogs and a cold beer. Jays was a blue collar place for the working man ( no such thing for casual wear, come as you are ) . Old Jay would line up about 6 to 8 hot dogs on his sweaty harry arm up to his arm pit and slap some mustard and ketchup on with a paint brush, people did not care because the dogs were so good. If you had a hangover from too much booze a Jays hotdog was the perfect antidote to rid you from a hangover. I wish Jays were back down town again, truly miss those days! I guess my love for this place is more tradition than having a love for chili dogs in general. My father started taking me to this location in the early seventies. Other Jay's locations have come and gone. Each of them lacked something that Frank and his son still offered. The Boardman location still offers milkshakes made from real ice cream (not soft serve) and the chili recipe remains the same as it ever was. Any deviation from what I'm used to would make this place ordinary. I don't actively tell people that these are the best chili dogs ever. Nor do I try other "famous" recipes in my travels. This Jay's in Boardman is an acquired taste and part of the atmosphere is numerous photos of local athletes who became stars on the professional level. Look at my hame and you might be surprised that I have NEVER had a milkshake across the street at the Arby's. Jay's isn't open late anymore but I challenge you to find another place to get my staple before 10 AM: 2 Famous Dogs and a Shake with fries that I drown in vinegar. The gyros are great too. read more
