On a road trip with my family, our van died at Crater lake. I was able to restart it and get it to Bend. I called about 6 auto mechanics in the Bend and Portland area and the earliest they would be able to take my van would be 3 days out. I spoke to Miles at Jays and he said to bring it in the next day. Mel and Miles diagnosed the problem, replaced the alternator and battery and had us back on the road the next day. Mel double checked all the fluids and test drove the van to make sure we didn't run into any other problems. Honestly I was a bit hesitant on bringing my vehicle to this garage after reading some of the reviews but Miles, Mel and the rest of their crew treated me with only the utmost respect and courtesy. read more

The one place to go to install a catalytic converter shield to prevent it from been stolen! Jay's garage was very communicative and on point. Over the phone estimate is what I was actually charged and my car was serviced super fast even though some extra adjustment was needed because my Prius is a 2021. Catalytic converter are been stolen left and right! Usual insurance deductible are about $500 or to replace a stolen catalytic converter is around 2K The cost of the installation is less than the deductible cost so it's well worth it! read more

Extremely dishonest and overpriced. Took my car in to get a quote after a minor accident and they quoted me $700 and were about to order new parts. Whoever helped me was confusing and unclear about what needed to be replaced. I ended up leaving disappointed and unsure if it was safe to drive my car. I'm so mad right now, I need to let people know what I found out before it it happens to anyone else. I took my car to Jay's for an oil change a few months ago. I change my oil at 3000 miles. When my change oil light came on after I had the oil change done the day before, I called and asked them why the light was coming on and they said the guy that changed it must not have reset the electronics. After 3000 miles, I took it to my normal garage to get an oil change and they told me there was no way it was changed 3000 miles ago. It said it looked about double that. I ended up needing an engine flush to clean out the old oil from two oil changes ago! I can't believe this happened. I'm just glad they didn't destroy my car. read more

I can't say enough good things about Jay's Garage Visiting from SEA, our Honda Pilot's alternator gave out unexpectedly as I was entering the city off the 405. Thankfully, I was able to pull onto off ramp into relative safety and get a tow from AAA Immediately, some panic set in. Filled my truck up with their biodiesel and my check engine light came on a couple hours later. Scanned it and got a 'bad fuel injectors' code. Brought the truck in to get it serviced and the catalytic converter had gone out due to the shitty fuel quality gunking everything up. That tank of gas ended up costing me $2400! Took in my jeep for brakes (pads and rotors) 'cause it was really squeaking. They replaced all four wheels and then within the week my brakes were squeaking again. Called multiple times and left call back messages- no reply :( Fast forward to now, 10months later (gave up on Jay's, obviously) the new mechanic shop has to replace the back pads and rotors again. I guess something was missed? Something more than simple brakes? "Calipers" were goofed up? I thought these kinds of things should last longer?? Groupon oil change ends up being a ripoff if your car takes synthetic oil. Groupon for Jay's says synthetic oil blend, but they charge extra $30 if your car takes synthetic! Plus ad says tire rotation included. Two times now, they have not done what they advertise. Don't buy Jay's group on unless you have a car that takes regular oil! BEWARE!!! While this shop tries to claim the neighborhood mechanic, they use the same tactics as all the others. Do not let the nice bubbly girl who makes the calls fool you. They up sell and do not fix the problem the first time. I have taken my 2002 Accord there, which is driven by my grandma and only has 64k miles. The problem is the AC. I have already dropped almost $1k bucks to get this thing fixed. I was hoping this third time, it was a loose bolt. No its now another $300 plus repair. GIVE ME A BREAK. This is a HONDA with half the mileage that should be on this. I was really hoping they would help me out. After hearing about our bad experience, the owner of Jay's got in contact with us (in fact, he tried several times before we called him back, thinking there was really no way he could come up with a solution) and told he was sorry, and unaware of the entire situation. Miles went above and beyond, not only fixing the problems with our car, but also gave us a free loaner car the entire time ours was in the shop. STAY AWAY FROM HERE!!!!! I am not one to write a negative review but this has by far been my worst experience since I moved to Portland a few years ago. I had to fix one part in my car and was quoted a $200 price for everything. Upon my return 1 1/2 days later they said everything was working fine and so I went to pay my bill. $1200 later... Not the $200 I was quoted they had added several additional repairs that were not mentioned to me. I paid half of it not knowing what to do at the time, and they still were trying to collect the other half of the money. By law it was illegal that they did not call me to do any additional repairs to my vehicle before doing so. They were fully aware and broke the law! These guys are crooked! They will try and pinch every penny out of you and take advantage of you in any way possible. You are better going to a place that originally quotes you a more expensive price because chances are that it will end up being cheaper anyways. I would NEVER recommend anyone going to Jay's Garage as they are crooked and WILL take advantage of you. read more

I too am updating my review. I am fascinated by this process. I think it is awesome that the owner wants to make things right but I struggle with the fact that he has to do it so much. Outside of Yelp I had a few people contact me and share their experiences and they weren't that great. My neighbor took her car to Jay's on my recommendation, had a CRAZY experience as well and the owner contacted her to make it right. I think the owner is probably a really lovely person and wants to do good things with his business. He did contact me through AAA (whom I LOVE) and refunded me the payment I made for the Free pre-sale inspection, which I totally appreciate. I have also been the beneficiary of a crash course in auto repair for which I am also thankful. We, and by that I mean AAA and Jay's Garage, have chalked it up to a miscommunication. I am willing to join that bandwagon and offer a cautionary word to future patrons. Get everything in writing and make sure you.... No, just get everything in writing. read more

i was very pleased with the service i received at Jay's Garage recently. I drove in and asked if they changed mufflers and they started working on my car immediately. They were very friendly and informative. The only minor complaints that i have are they went ahead and changed the rusted center pipe w/o asking me first (it needed to be done, but the final bill was $530!) and when i looked over the bill, the cost of the muffler alone was $147 - mufflers can be as cheap as $60. they didnt ask me about using a cheap muffler, which i hear - a muffler is just a muffler, nothing special about that. to their credit, they changed my oil and gave me an hour of service for free, no charge. they seem to have a ton of loyal customers and have been there for about 30 years. they must be doing something right. read more

A lot of people in service industries say things like that, but I absolutely believe that of this staff. This is my second time bringing my car into the shop. As a girl who doesn't know much beyond how to change their oil, going to a shop can be a stressful experience. Not even close to so with the people here. Twice now, I have shown up at their desk in emergency mode - my 2000 Golf wasn't starting. Twice now, Meredeth has made me feel incredibly welcome and cared for. Many more times (at least five conversations I can think of right now), Miles has taken time out of his day to explain to me what was going on in terms a computer nerd can understand and what needed to happen to fix it because he knew I wanted to understand my machine better. When we came to pick up our car, I wish I would have snapped a picture. The staff's genuine smiles after our several week ordeal would tell you what I already knew by then -- these people truly care about the people they work with. After traveling 3 1/2 throughout the Western United States pulling our 34 ft trailer with our 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins diesel we brought our truck in after it failed to start on a couple of occasions. It became clear that we were looking at replacing an expensive part of the fuel delivery system to the tune of over $3,000. Life sucks sometimes. So, I gave Jerry the OK to replace this part. Then, I got a call a day or so later from Jerry. They looked at the situation deeper, not only relying on the engine trouble codes, and determined there might be just a bad sensor in play, only a $300 fix. This was the second of four mechanics I went to on my trip-from-hell. I was about to head back to Los Angeles from Portland, when all of a sudden my car stalled out and died. And died again. And again. And again. Shit. Called AAA, had them tow it to a garage of their choice seeing as I know nothing about garages in Portland. They recommended Jay's, so I said sure. The woman at the desk was friendly and helpful. One of the guys took my car and got to work on finding out what was up. An hour later they'd determined it was an electrical component in the ignition. Saving my life, they managed to call around and find the part (it was almost 4 at that point) and got to work on installing it, as well as some new spark plugs that the guy recommended. Got it all done, and then they were nice enough to wait around while I dealt with a totally insane credit card issue that took almost an hour to resolve, and were totally nice about it. My only thought was the work seemed a little spendy, but all the work was necessary and their customer service made it an experience worth recommending to others. The guy who worked on my car was awesome to the point that I want to go back just to hang out with him. I got a courtesy call the next day to ask if I'd made it down to where I was headed alright, which I wasn't able to return but was very pleased to get. read more

I have been working with Jay at Jay's garage to get my 2000 CR-V to pass DEQ. He knew loads more about this than my long-time mechanic, and knew what the problem was, what to replace, and provided a complete estimate before making any repairs. When I went back to DEQ to try for the 7th time to pass, (two weeks after his repair), I still saw the computer showing Not Ready status on the evap and catalytic readings. I just left his shop, and how did he help me? He made more repairs, all free of charge. Not only is Jay honest, straightforward and smart, but his shop uses modern technology, savvy mechanics, and great customer service--all of which has combined to win my future business. read more

So I haven't actually had a service done yet but I am very very leery as I also was duped by the Groupon synthetic "synthetic blend" oil change. Only to be notified later that yes if your car is the synthetic oil not synthetic blend but synthetic oil drinking type of car there's a lovely little $30 up charge for that. Doesn't make that Great Groupon deal so great anymore.I'm not worried about the tire rotation, Les Schwab will take care of this for me but when I called to make an appointment the guy said to just come on in and we'll check you in and I'm like,"just anytime will do?" I don't need an appointment? So what happens when I show up and they're completely slammed, because I don't have an appointment I just get to sit and wait? I'm scared. but we'll see read more

Beware! I was charged for rerouting an electrical wire to my ignition (a "problem" the mechanic found that I did not mention to him). He bypassed the relay and neutral safety switch and connected the wire directly to the ignition which would burn out the system, meaning I would eventually have to replace it. I had to pay another mechanic to fix it in addition to paying these guys to f it up. Either he has no idea how to work on electrical systems or rigged it so it would break and have to be worked on again. read more
