So here's the thing. Everything about this place is great, but the one thing that is not led me to leave it a one star review. Music, ambience, drink selection, and food are fantastic. Prices keep the riffraff out, which is fine- as I am there to listen to good Jazz, not EDM or twerk music. I came in at 8:30 and had a seat at the bar, no mention of a cover charge. Upon ordering my second drink at 9, the bartender told me a cover charge would be posted to my account if I opted to stay. So I left. I an stand being nickeled and dimed at an already pricey place. Had they not charged customers already at the bar a cover, I would've stayed and had 3 more 15 dollar Manhattans...I guess they've done the math and found alienating customers with a cheap move like this is more profitable?? read more

This place is definitely classy. I showed up here for the salsa lessons and social dancing. But the bartenders and servers are very attentive and afternoon crowd had cool people. The drinks run about average so if you are trying to look for a happy hour special this spot might not be for you. If you are taking your lady out or significant other and want to impress her just a little bit this is definitely a spot to go. I was cool waking in the afternoon as others like myself sported jeans and a tshirt but later on in the evening you might want to call and check if this place requires a dress code. read more

Made a reservation online for $10 to watch the Flamenco ! They sat me at a easy chair with and end table. This is good for watching the dancers but not feasible for a sit down dinner. Waitress was nice and attentive. I ordered wine and because I did not have a table to eat on, I figured I would order finger food. I ordered the bucket of quail. $12 It was good little the Flamenco dancers were spectacular! The musicians were classic! A great show! read more

I must say Doc you put on a fantastic show. The Old school keyboard/ electric organ was outstanding. I have been around the world and seen many Jazz places and your place was the perfect mix of the old 60s/70s Jazz atmosphere. It was like going back in time for a Jazz show. I had the Filet steak and it was cooked perfectly. I look forward to Christmas performance this year. For anyone who loves an intimate atmosphere with great food and jazz music this is the place to be. String base, saxophone and drummer are extremely talented and gave a superb performance. If I am not mistaken, Jazz, TX is the first "real" jazz club in SA. For those familiar with jazz clubs in New York, Chicago, etc., you will have high expectations. For the San Antonio uninitiated, you may not. Doc Watkins walks a fine line to entice both new fans and those of us who expect the best. In short, Doc has almost hit a home run. Jazz is an intimate space with great acoustics. The small stage lends itself to this intimacy not only with the audience, but also the bands. A simple detail that I caught was how they used a speaker as a seat for the organ. It's almost like this brand new space already has classic seasoning like a lovingly aged iron skillet. Well played Doc! Although I personally miss the days with a little smoke in the mix, this gem is built for longevity. It has so much going for it not only in that close atmosphere, but with great service, solid food and outstanding cocktails. Many dishes are familiar yet have a flair for the unique. The ribeye was excellent with a nice chorizo potato on the side. Not too large or small of portions. The simple salad is just that but the goat cheese puts this in its own league. On the drink side I have to say I fell in love with their version of an old fashion called the ensemble. The old school blocked ice was a nice nod to the old days but limits the size of the drink. I wasn't too sure about that little peach in there but as you drink, it's infusion changes the nature of the experience. It was a win so I had three! On the topic of entertainment, Doc is freaking ridiculous. His energy and play are top notch. I almost had a heart attack when he fired up the Hammond! The band was also solid but they all play to his strengths it seems. I was at an early show (8:30) so I must say it was very scripted and streamlined. This is not what you are used to at old clubs late at night. I plan to go back to a later show and see if the improvisation flows like whiskey! If not, I would be disappointed. Overall, I cannot recommend a visit highly enough. SA desperately has needed this and from what I could tell, everyone felt the same way. A venue like this thrives with lively audiences, good food and drink and epic performers. So far, Doc has nailed it. read more

Some of the musicians we heard were quit talented...others were acting like high school kids but they were seniors on the slide trombone. The female vocalist was amazing...piano good but not balanced and too loud as was the pianists vocals. Drums were good. Stop trying to play Texas blues with a jazz band.. It doesn't work. I love the music, but Stevie Ray was my friend and he would be less than happy to hear this...not guitar, no bueno for his music!!! read more

While I love the idea of this place, I'm not a fan of having to pay a cover charge to go in. The place is a little small but cozy and swanky. There's a dance floor and the bands get the audience out on it. Everyone looks like they have fun each time I've been there. Creative cocktails and nice appetizers. Wife and I stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon because they had free jazz before the night show. All the tables were taken so we had to stand at the bar, no biggie. The drinks were excellent and the jazz was electric. We had a great time for a little while and then we had to get out because we didn't have reservations for the late show. I took a star away because they double charged me at the bar and I had to spend time disputing the charge. We will go back though. read more

Not worth $20 bucks a person was my first thought... but I have to admit I did enjoy the show. We did not have reservations on a Friday night but found a seat near at the bar and slowly made our way down the bar into the perfect position. The club was packed with couples and sold out. Read through most of the reviews and must note that hostess plainly did inform us about the cover charge if we stayed into the late evening show. Was not an issue for us as we'd purposely arrived for an early dinner/drinks. We'd been fans of the chef here going back a couple restaurants, and his menu here, albeit a bit more limited in scope, did not disappoint in the least. To be honest I wasn't really sure if jazz was my kind of music and thought that this place would be a little out of my comfort zone. I could not have been more wrong! I was amazed by not only the live music (particularly how fast fingers can move on a piano) but also the atmosphere, service, food and drinks. There is a lot to like about this place. Great ambience. Great menu. We went on a Beer & Brat night. The German Plate was outstanding! Service was rough. Especially for a place that you expect to buys drinks. A good drinking establishment makes sure you don't have empty glasses. We didn't see our wait staff nearly enough. Five of us ordered dinner. Two received theirs first. Five minutes later two others got theirs. 20 minutes later our five dinner arrived. A table needs to be served altogether. It just feels rude to eat when half of the table doesn't have food. Lastly, the quail appetizer. Undercooked. Made it gross. I am hopeful that they work out the bugs. Absolutely the best place I visited in San Antonio!!!! We went on New Orleans night and sat right up front. The band didn't just play instruments, they were so very entertaining!! My date asked me which was my favorite and I totally couldn't decide. They started out with sweet Georgia brown and the way each member entered into the song was so cool. The music and energy was great! This is a very elevated experience. The salsa band was incredible and sitting front and center you can really admire all the fabulous dancers. This is for sure a date night environment. Extremely intimate and tight space so make sure to make a reservation to make the most of your experience. Enjoyed two tequila based cocktails and the quail bucket and pickled mushrooms. Didn't feel fully comfortable ordering a full entre like I said a very tight space and the cocktail tables don't really allow for you to comfortably chow down on a burger. I finally got to check out Jazz TX, and it did not disappoint. I got in free because I got there between 5pm and 8pm (no cover only applies between Tuesday and Saturday). I've heard many great things about Jazz TX, so I decided to go on a Saturday night to finally check it out. It wasn't too hard to find at the Pearl. It's kind of behind Bakery Lorraine. The entrance is downstairs, slightly hidden. When we went inside it was packed (as to be expected) and we couldn't go to the bar because it was at capacity. However, a table had just cleared in the front so they offered us this great table! We had a drink, enjoyed amazing music, and watched people dancing! This was a great spot, and a must try! The music here is divine. The bartenders are fabulous. I can't speak much for the wait staff as I always sit at the bar, but they look like they're always on their toes! The food is always delicious! I love how it changed with the season! Same with the cocktails! First timers, be sure to ask for a same of their Lillet. It's fortified wine, if I'm not mistaken, with fruit. Earlier this year it was made with strawberries, but once the fall season hit, it changed to blackberries -- just as scrumptious! Also, don't hesitate to come here on your own! Great night out in San Antonio. This venue is in the Pearl District area and is a very nice, intimate setting where you can listen to live jazz music along w other genres. We went when Doc Watkins and his jazz band were performing and it was awesome! Great music with a variety of instruments and songs. Small area for dancing up front. If wanting a table, I would suggest reserving online early, as seats go quick. We showed up early and luckily got bar seats without a reservation, but can be difficult. A bit pricey after adding in food/drink costs, but definitely worth it, one of a kind live music opportunity! read more

Tip: Reserve a table in advance; we were glad we did. Came for Happy Hour on Thursday evening (5:00-7:30; $10 cocktails, $8 house wines, $6 beers) with a group of friends and had a wonderful time!
