He is super sweet to kids and in general and offers a lollipop from his candy jar. He would be a 5 star but cleanliness is questionable. I haven't been to an independent asian hair salon in years, Bc my personal experience is that I would never come out of the salon with what I actually wanted... but this has NOT the case! Blink and you'll miss this tiny salon next to El Pollo Loco. The waiting area has one of those funny 25-cent massage chairs, and a bunch of Chinese and Spanish-language mags. Business is brisk - there are constant phone calls and walk-ins. At most places I just get a boring bowl cut, but here the guy (Jason) is talented and precise enough that I have him do some razoring and layering, so that my hair looks bouncier. Yesterday he gave the young guy before me some sort of spiky punk cut; it looked like something out of the 80s but the customer left happy. My husband likes this place too; they can cut his hair short without making it stick up in the back like Alfalfa. If you don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese, it helps if you come with an interpreter. I've known Jason for 18 years. Back then he was working for another barbershop in Monterey park. He worked hard and saved enough to open his own place about 10 years ago. He has been cutting my hair and doing my mothers hair for most part of last 18 years. He's an excellent hair stylist. I've stopped giving him any instructions and he has never failed me. I especially like the fact that he always takes his time even if he's had many customers waiting. And for the same reason I never minded waiting for him. He just never seems to be in a hurry. He's also super accommodating. If you don't like how your hair looks within a week after your hairdo, he'll be glad to make small changes for you free of charge. He's just genuinely a nice guy. He treats everyone the same whether he's making 5 dollars or 50. His price is slightly higher compared to the other Asian places but def much lower than mainstream American places. 8 dollars for men's haircut (average Asian places are about 6-7 and I pay about 20 elsewhere). If it wasn't for my mother, I would never have thought of coming here to get a hair cut for my son. Not the cleanest place, but they know how to cut Asian hair and it's cheap! Can't beat $7 for a haircut for a child. I have taken my son to Supercuts, Fantastic Sams and other fancy hair salon but none of the hair cuts turn out how the way I like it. These people are quick and the wait is not that long. They are even open on holidays, but call beforehand if you don't live nearby. The drive is a bit far so if I do make a trip out here, I will always take advantage of the delicious food restaurants that are in the area. read more

Unlike some of the other places down the road they are limited to 4 chairs which means the barbers there know their business and you're not likely to walk out with a wonky cut. The place is small and if you don't speak some version of Chinese I'd learn or avoid. Personally my haircut was excellent and well worth it. The barbers deserve the credit. I needed a haircut for a big event. Paying more than $30 for a not-so-good one, I decided to give it a try having someone here to fix it. The veteran Mr. Guan was willing to listen to and understand what I wanted, and gave me suggestions during the process. He trimmed and cut my hair carefully and patiently. It is not a quick one by just with the hair clipper, but also some skills and details with the scissors. I went out of the door with satisfaction. The $8 before tips is worth the price. Frankly I haven't tried the neighbor two barbershops which charge a even lower price $5, but the experience I had @ JC was way better than where I paid $30+. I've been coming here since forever now, Jason (the owner) is the best there is. For $8 its a quick job, but one very well done. Never once had a problem. I've become such a regular I don't even have to say how I want my hair cut, I just say hi and asks for the "regular" cut (In chinglish of course lol) For those who don't speak chinese, it might be a bit difficult explaining specifically how you want your hair. She listened to what I wanted and then exceeded my expectation. 2nd time here, the short asian dude fought to cut my hair and didn't listen at all. He kept saying yes he'll do that but ended up doing it his own way and screwed up my haircut. The two sides were not even the same length... and he didn't follow the hair style I wanted so he ended up cutting more and more without getting anything right. He ended up cutting so much that he can't even try to fix it so less than zero stars if possible. But I'll feel bad giving this place less than 3 stars for the 1st good experience so I'll give them an average with a bonus which will earn them 3 stars. read more
