I have lived over by this Ace Hardware my whole life, but now since I am moving to a new house and adulting with my fiancé, I actually feel I can adequately rate this store more appropriately since we have had to come here often. We have come here on multiple occasions in the past couple of months for paint and paint supplies, and we have had nothing but great experiences from the guy named Spencer. He has been so helpful and always asks questions that get us to where we need to go to color match our paint. He even told us on multiple occasions that if the paint wasn't the right color that he would fix it for us if we came back. Every time he has helped us, it has been a perfect color match or extremely close. We once were getting help from a guy named Bob, but he had no clue what he was doing and when we asked him the difference between eggshell paint or satin, he didn't answer and instead just told us all of the different sheens we could get, even though we could read them off the wall behind him. Then, even though we told him we just moved into the house and they left no paint for us to use, he asked us how long ago it was painted and what sheen they used. Not very helpful questions to ask at all after the info I just gave. He was also struggling with the paint color matching machine, but luckily, Spencer relieved him from helping us, so I will always ask for him when it comes to paint. We also got some keys made here, as well, and I have gotten this done in the past, as well, and it's ways been a positive and easy experience. The cashiers are always extremely friendly, too, and always ask if they could help with anything else. Honestly, most people at this store seem to know what they're talking about (even if they don't) haha. This is a small and convenient place to visit when you need a few small things, rather than going to a huge place like Home Depot or Menards where you'd have to spend a whole bunch of time walking around the store to find what you're looking for. Obviously, Ace may not have as many options as the bigger renovation stores, but normally they always have what me amd my family are looking for when it comes to paint or small repairs. read more

I want to thank Kevin and Morgan for all the help today. I was buying Rust Oleum Floor Coating - a product they started carrying very recently. After previously speaking to someone at Rust-Oleum and a few people at different hardware stores, I've learned that this floor coating isn't easily tintable due to its special formula. A different Ace store told me they weren't able to tint it, so I wasn't shocked that this store said the same thing and were planning on having me take it to the JC Licht store (same owner) down the street for tinting . But it was closed on Sundays. A corporate opportunity for improvement would be figuring out how to tint this before putting it in stores. That said, it is difficult to find the base coat sold separately from the top coat, so I was happy it was available anyway. And since I had the formula - from a big box store (it would seem that would make it easy, but colorants aren't all the same) - Kevin and Morgan did everything in their power to help me. What a terrible business, and what a terrible way to run a business, I purchased some items for about $30 and they do not take hundred dollar bills, this is America ,Cash is king.... I'm sorry you people are not smart enough to look at $100 bill and tell that it is a Fake..... or worse.... You cannot afford one of those gadgets that checks a bill.... I have to revise my original review now that this hardware store is under new ownership, January 2023.. I brought in a key to be duplicated. I went home and the key did not unlock the door. I went back the next day, spoke to a different employee, who made a new copy of the key. I went home and this key didn't work either. read more

Usually, this place has been pretty helpful. But, I had a some keys copied here recently. One of the original keys was not returned. I guess I should've had them done one at a time/per visit. When I realized this, I called later a little later asking about the key, the guy cut me off mid-sentence two say they don't have it. I asked, "Don't you want to know what it looked like so you can go check?" I proceeded to described the lanyard it was on. "No, we don't have it." I'm glad it was a key to a for inside the house and not a key to the whole house. Still, it was disturbing. read more

The store is well stocked however the employees look like they don't enjoy their jobs. Taller gentleman walking around the store cursing about with a MASSIVE STAIN ON HIS PANTS I understand getting dirt and whatnot but to not clean yourself after using the restroom is an embarrassment. which is highly disgusting and shouldn't be allowed several workers in the back of the store talking when I was needing help by the glass cabinets not to mention the female cashier was rude as well she was very irritated and was in a hurry to get me out of the store unfortunately the employee who I enjoy working is no longer at this location and he always went out of his way to focus on the costumers he was working with and gave his time to explain each matter that I need- a huge loss with this "JC Licht" should go back to making paint since they know nothing of hardware read more

When I go in here, I *know* I can rely on them being helpful and knowledgeable, and I always bring greeted by friendly people and receiving excellent customer service. From direction on picking out wood stain to getting my snowblower fixed, my lawnmower tuned up, I know I can rely on this store -- and it's sister store of JC Licht Norwood Park where I receive good advice on lawn care, tools, paint, you name it. I'm glad I have these two stores in my area to shop at because I like to shop at neighborhood stores to support them whenever I can!! SHOP LOCAL!!! I've shopped here spending more than I would at Home Depot or Lowe's for almost everything to support a local business but I'm just done. I had a screen repair which took over 3 weeks, came back with a hole in the screen, and missing a piece of vinyl from the trim. Never got a call for when my screen was ready, so had to call the store on a regular basis. Had I known the job would be done this badly I'd have just contacted my Window installers to purchase a new one outright -- it would have been more convenient than Ace's mail order repair service. The job was done so poorly I wouldn't trust Ace to even attempt to make it right. You could probably go to any other Ace in the local area and experience a much better ran store. read more

This is a great local hardware store. A little bigger than most Ace stores, but still smaller than a Home Depot. Ace franchises out their locations so it is run locally. I find that the operators offer a better localized assortment for Chicago and are always in stock when storms hit. They have a large, very fun, BBQ section and lots of Big Green Egg stuff. I went for a sprinkler and also grabbed a large bag of applewood to smoke for $10. I have had keys made here are they are quick and produce a durable product. The line was long (ten min) so they may need to keep a closer eye on staffing. read more

I had a horrible experience at ACE yesterday with a lawnmower I bought at that store by Harlem and Foster. I put up a review regarding my experience. Thank God I got a call from the owner this morning, her name is Toni. She is VERY NICE.She was willing to listen to me as I explained what I had to go through to return the lawnmower and get my money back. She apologized for what happened to me and said she was going to look into the situation. It's nice when you have someone LISTEN to you and understands your point of view. This by far is the best in class customer service. I had bought a green egg for my husband a few years back-which he loves, the gift that gives-delicious bbq!! The inner shell cracked and green egg has a lifetime warranty on parts. Couldn't find receipt and the store manager and back office went over and beyond to research finding our receipt! Their customer service is top notch and I will always be a loyal client and share this story! Great friendly staff that have lots of helpful hints and know where I can find every little thing from a drain attachment for my dishwasher to chain for my fence to a thermocouple for my furnace. I go nuts in Home Depot trying to find stuff as it is so darn big, I spend an hour trying to find something and one minute to buy it. There is a horrible horrible ACE hardware on Harlem and Diversey. The owner needs to keep an eye on his tall employee who practically chases people out the door with his laziness. Awful. It could be better if he fired everyone and stocked the store better. This is one of the smaller Ace's located in the Foster/Harlem strip mall that is known mostly for the Jewel/Osco and Burlington Coat Factory. It will gladly make keys for you and sells as much hardware supplies as they can fit in this store. It's amazing how much you can pack in a store like this. This place is usually fine but today the employees were absolutely rude! The closing time is 6pm, and yes I cut it short by arriving at 5:55pm which is still within the hours of operation for the store. After I walked in the one employee who appeared to just want to leave even though the business hours dictated that they were still open. I grabbed two rolls of tape and a couple of sharpies and was at the register before 6pm. As I'm walking out the rude employee made a pathetic comment to try and impress his other co-workers. I have been shopping here for the past three years and this will be my last time. The ace on Lawrence which is 5 minutes away is definitely the better, bigger, and so much more professional business between the two. If you have a choice I would avoid this ace and go to the one on Lawrence.. this guy is the reason why most small hardware stores are out of business and people choose home depots, Menards, or Lowes.. once this place ends up closing because of his bad attitude and poor manners he will have no one else to blame but himself and poor attitude... read more

I have seen this hardware store do a 180 in a matter of a few months. I've lived in the Big Oaks Neighborhood since 1991 and I would always try to go to this hardware store over the Ace located at Lawrence and Cumberland, depending on if Harlem and Foster was out of what I needed. I always found good help when I would visit and believe it or not even some good help from some of the young guys that were on staff there in the past. I had built a first name relationship with Mike the Manager who was there for years and was very knowledgeable and respectful, and even more recently with a gentleman named Bob who is also helpful. I often tried to stray away from the staff-members whom I had unhelpful experiences with as well as that one short dorky older guy with glasses who gave both me and my family the creeps. But let me tell you avid yelpers once I was enlightened that this store is under new management and Mike was gone, all of the pieces of the puzzle came together. This place went to complete POTS! An acquaintance of mine John Nolin is a self-employed handy-man who buys all of his supplies for his jobs from this store let me know the latest facts. And from what I was told the owner of this store also owns the new Ace on Northwest highway (maybe all the good and attention went to that location?) well somethings got to give because it saddens me to not want to shop at my local hardware store now-a-days due to just the new poor management I've seen, and an absolute lack of customer satisfaction. I have been shopping at this store for years and ever since the new ownership took over the place has gone downhill. Same goes for the Norwood park store which has the same new owners. The shelves are almost never fully stocked anymore. I have noticed that one by one most of the regular, very helpful employees that have worked here for years have been leaving. Now when you go to this ace good luck finding someone that can actually help you. They took away all of the services that they used to provide such as fixing/re-wiring lamps, changing the battery in car remotes, etc. and they have been raising all their prices, especially keys! All I know is that once these new owners took over, this store has not been the same. I will only be shopping at the Norridge Ace Hardware and I suggest everyone else does the same! read more

I had a great experience at this Ace. I went in with several projects I needed to do around the house. Mike was great! I asked him several questions and he was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what I was describing in each scenario. He talked to me in terms I could understand and did not treat me like I was stupid. He gave me a lot of good advice! He even gave me a referral for a plumber and handyman. I highly recommend him. This place was at one time the best hardware stores you can go to. since last year all i have seen is it going down hill. The customer service has also suffered since the new store opened, the most helpful people seem to have went to the Norwood Park Ace. The former manager who always used to help me does not work there anymore for any reason and I have trouble finding anyone who knows what is going on. A woman that works in the back seems very inexperienced and incompetent, every time I ask a question she has one of the younger kids help, who seem to know more than her.
