I love giving my business to this locally owned hardware store. The owner is so nice. He cuts keys and glass!!!! I have a bunch of gallery walls in my home and he even cut glass for many vintage frames I thrifted. Some pieces as small as 1.5" x 1.5" - I really appreciate that he worked with my insane requests haha, great price too. It's nice to walk into a hardware store where the person running it is actually helpful unlike many employees in large corporate hardware store giants. read more

Small neighborhood hardware store that has a very useful selection. I go here for a lot of seasonal home needs (e.g. melting salt, rakes) and misc hardware (fasteners, painters tape). I live less than two blocks from here so they're always my first stop when looking for something hardware-related. Sometimes they have what I want and sometimes they don't, but when they don't, the big box retailers usually don't have it, either, so I can't really complain (I guess I'm looking for really obscure stuff). I bought a replacement deadbolt lock here a few months ago, but it never really had good "action" and sometimes the bolt wouldn't even turn, no matter how I adjusted it. Finally I broke down and bought a replacement one at a big box retailer, which worked great. I took the old one back to Yu Hardware and while they of course weren't thrilled to give me a refund, they didn't balk at it, either. That's good customer service even when they stand to lose in the short term. I really appreciate that. read more

My daughter recently purchased a condo in Logan Square and I have been helping her get settled. We needed some wall anchors & screws for a medicine cabinet and I always dread going to Home Depot or Loews for such small items. Not knowing the neighborhood, I searched for hardware stores near me. Two came up, Ace Hardware on Milwaukee Ave. And Yu Hardware. Not knowing Yu, I went to Ace, only to discover that they are out-of-business. I drove to Yu Hardware and instantly stepped into my nostalgic past. Yu Hardware is a time capsule of the way hardware stores used to look and the personalized service from the owner is a lost experience! I was able to purchase exactly what I needed, quickly and at a fair price! I now need to find opportunities to go back and only wish Yu Hardware was closer to where I live! read more

They can cut glass for windows in minutes. They can replace screens. Even if you have no idea what you're doing, they will get you what you need and explain how to fix it. Stepping into Yu Hardware is like stepping into a hardware store from the past, but in a idealized version of a store from "The Good Old Days". The stock is piled to the tin-roofed ceiling in a semi-orderly jumble of goods, but there is always someone on hand to get you exactly what you need in half the time it takes you to walk from your car to the front door at Home Depot. They thread pipes, re-glaze windows, make keys, and have just about anything you need on hand. Hidden, perhaps, but they are there to find it for you. Please give this business your patronage! It is absolutely the perfect argument for service over price...but they are competitive on that too! read more

I own some condos in the area that I am working on and needed to get some key copies made. This place only charges $1 per key and they have excellent friendly service. Just tell them what you need and they probably have it. Can't go wrong with a place like this. Plus when you go in take a look up, it has the original tin ceiling. Yu hardware is one of the last of the great neighborhood hardware stores. Go into see Mr. Yu and they might explain he is retired , but John or Jose are there and ready to help. Tell them what your project or problem is and they will tell you what you need to solve it. I am always amazed by the amount of stock they have as well as they services they offer. Great neighborhood hardware store, well-stocked for its size. In the era of the big-box hardware stores (H. Depot) and chains that have gotten more like K-Marts (Ace) its very nice to have a locally owned and operated, small footprint, hardware store. I get my picture frame glass, keys, fasteners, and most of my hardware supplies from Yu. I always feel well-served and accommodated. I like places that let me bring my dog inside, since I can run errands while I'm on a walk. read more

Cool in the fact that it's a mom and pop hardware store. Not cool in the fact that when had some glass cut there, the guy who cut it HID the fact that he messed up cutting the edge of the glass by wrapping up the piece of glass before I got to see it. I paid for it. Left the shop. When I opened the package at home one entire side of the glass edge was chipped in like 5 spots. Looks like those guys can't cut glass very well. Not going back there and too bad b/c they are small and local and do need the business. -But bad business manners = equal no returning customers!!! read more

Helpful and friendly. A throwback type of place that knows what they're doing. They make keys that work correctly, unlike some larger places. Well stocked with hardware, you can bring in a fitting or screw and they'll pull a replacement. No more wandering around Home Depot for half an hour and then going home with a 100-count box of screws that you need 3 of. read more

The best place to get copies of keys made. Plus they do a lot of other services that are hard to find like window glass replacement and screen replacement. Ever since I moved to the neighborhood 22 years ago, I have found Yu hardware store to be very helpful. When I enter the store it is like stepping into Chicago of 50+ years ago, but they always have what I need today: keys, paint supplies, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, hardware, glass shelving, and more. Jose and Mr. Yu (and more recently John) are ever so friendly and they clearly know their customers. They always ask about the children who they watched grow up and supplied with lollipops when ever they visited. I wholeheartedly recommend this store. read more

Walking to Yu Hardware from my apartment took 10 minutes, I was in there less than 5 minutes (and got exactly what I needed for under $5), and then walked home in 10 minutes. There's a good chance that I wouldn't have even made it into Home Depot in that amount of time. Plus at Yu Hardware they did the looking for me, and then explained how to use the tool I was buying.
