Someone is always willing to take the time to help me find the odd screw that I need or the best fertilizer (even if it is not most expense that they offer). Best of all they have an in-house designer (Celeste M. Garvey) who is amazing and will help you select the right color combination, wallpaper or drapes. I prefer to shop local when possible, so I always try Ace first rather than, say, the closer Home Depot. You might end up paying a little more here, but I don't mind. Obviously this is a smaller store, but they usually have what I need: batteries, light bulbs, ice melter, yard-working gloves, plastic tarps, extension cords, hose nozzle, various adhesives, all that kind of stuff. Two years ago I was fed up with my old chewed-up snow shovel and was pleasantly surprised to find a wide selection of new ones in the middle of winter. Bought one of those ice breaking tools that are so satisfying to use too. Recently I was looking for a replacement under-cabinet paper towel holder and couldn't find anything here. Another time it was a specific type and size of sink stopper that I ended up getting online. So sure, there are limits. But they have most of what you need as a run-of-the-mill homeowner. read more

Yes, prices are high, but their focus is customer service and attention. This place is utterly inept at making keys. I had a key made, tested it, and didnt work. Came back to have it made again. That didn't work either. Neither did the third key. Why are you still offering to make keys?? Your machine is broken or your people arent trained. A 5 minute, straight-forward errand turned out to be an extremely frustrating, time wasting ordeal. 2 stars because Miriam at the front counter was very nice and quickly gave me my money back after the 3rd key didn't work. read more

This Ace Hardware is a reliable location for any of your hardware needs. Ace is a national chain that franchises operations locally. I feel it is nice since they stores tailor their assortment based on years of experience in the community, not regional trends. The shop is located right on Northwest Highway in a strip mall with a large parking lot. The store is set up very logically and they are usually in stock on all items. They have all the things that homeowners might need: full paint section, key making, tools, patio supplies and a large BBQ section. They have an awesome assortment of Big Green Egg accessories and a nice selection of lump charcoals. The staff is very friendly and always ready to answer a question. The service is better than Home Depot's, who I feel has good customer service. Prices seem to be on par with the big box stores for most items. Ok store but many items are not being restocked and it's been like this even before the virus. The main ACE website will indicate items are available at this location but then I go to the store and they're not there. At least other ACE locations seem to be larger or are well stocked. This one is... meh. Employees are ok. "Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man." I still remember the old TV commercials. Well, they try to be helpful at this place but seems they never have what I need at the moment when I go there. This Ace is about 1 mile from me, yet I've only come there a handful of times. From those few visits, I've walked away with nothing most of the time. Kudos for having 2-stroke engine oil for my snowblower the last time it snowed, but as I walked in the door, a handwritten sign read "No Salt". Luckily, I wasn't looking for any that day, but it is consistent with their store. That said, Ace simply cannot keep the large inventory of a Menard's or Home Depot, but they can be more informed of what people actually use or need. Last summer, I could not find a small 10-pound bucket of patching cement for some cracks on my sidewalk. The hernia-inducing Sakrete 80-pounders were all they carried. Another time, I was looking for a particular size of wood screw. They had the really long ones, the really short ones, the right length in the wrong thread size, but were out of the popular size I was seeking. Since I gave my local Home Depot a poor review recently, I generally try to avoid going to that one already. Ace could have been a nice alternative being so close to home. Well, guess not. I'd rather go a little farther to the Norridge Ace on Lawrence & Cumberland. At least there I found my cement mix and a lot of the other items this store doesn't carry. Except for some loyal old-timers who might frequent this place, I wonder why people go there as much as they do. read more

I've made a point to support smaller shops instead of the big-box stores, especially when it comes to hardware stores. Our town (Des Plaines) at one time boasted as many as four hardware stores. Now we have none. I like shopping at Olson Ace Hardware in Park Ridge because the staff are so amazingly helpful. They're knowledgeable, know where stuff is and what it is, give good advice, and can find small parts (screws, nuts, etc.) that you'd never find in the big-box stores, or if you do find them, you'll have buy them in lots of 100. The Olson Ace Hardware is my go-to store. Today, Morgan was able to help me replace a sink trap and let me know how to connect my PVC piping. Iverette found me an additional discount as I checked out and was very friendly. Even the guy emptying the garbage on the way out wished me a good evening. read more

Every time I go into this store, there are mice running around and no one around to help. When I see the one manager he's always in paint with some girl and never asks if I need assistance. The only reason I give two stars is because of the cashiers. They are kind and always ask for someone over the radio to help me and get just as frustrated as me when no one shows up. The associates are extremely helpful and the store is clean and well organized. My mother's mailbox broke so I brought it here to see if they could recommend something to repair the hinge. Ted was so helpful and patient. He took the time to find the right screws/bolts that would work to replace the rivets. Not only did he find something that worked, he did the repair for me! It wasn't easy, but he kept at it until it was fixed. I also have to thank Mady, who assisted Ted by using tweezers to hold the tiny nuts in place so he could get the screws tightened. Teamwork! I will also note that while I was waiting for Ted to find the hardware, at least 4 other employees came over to ask if I needed help. Outstanding customer service. read more

Since the Aces everywhere have apparently been forced to reorganize the interiors by someone in corporate, larger stores such as this one are now very difficult to figure out. There is some intrinsic lack of logic in what gets placed where. This has been the case for a couple of years now and when staff has as much of a problem as the customers in locating where something now resides instead of where it had been in the past, it is pretty frustrating. I do not enjoy having to go there because of the new layout. The staff are 50/50 knowledgeable and helpful. Only one rude person, metioned by others already. There is some customer shuffling from one attendant to another but it is done politely. Service for windows still excellent as well as for paint. I did like it better the way it was and certainly liked it better from the service standpoint with the folks who used to run it in the past. New store going to open soon in Des Plaines - about the same floor space. Will have to see and compare. read more

I have stopped into this store several times as it's near my office to pick up one or two items. There is NEVER anyone to help. I'm truly fending for myself every time I go in. There is zero service at this store. One the other hand, there is an Ace near my home in Arl Heights that is teeming w/friendly, knowledgeable employees that greet you as soon as you walk in ("how can I assist you today?").
