After numerous years of brutal, intestinal fortitude testing winters - my screens were beat up and torn or full of holes. Snow, ice, wind, hail, it just all adds up. I first went to Menards and then Home Depot and they all said the same thing - we have the screen materials and tool kit but we don't do that type of work. In fact, Menards specifically mentioned Skokie Ace. So I came in and we got what I would consider a fair estimate for 8 of my screens. Now - could I have done this job myself? Of course, and I say that without flinching. The question was, do I sacrifice a Saturday afternoon to replace all of these screens? No, because I could be Yelping. I decided to pay for this work to buy some time. You may disagree but my Cost vs. Benefits analysis led to drop off all of my screens. I walked in and was greeted by Liz who helped me locate the item I was looking for. She was graciously enough to walk me around the store and showed me some items you normally don't find in a hardware store such as winter hats, gloves and socks! The store has 2 levels and carries everything you need and more from a hardware store. You do get a more personal customer service than a big name stores. 2 hour free parking is available on the side street while you shop. read more

Entering the store I was surprised by the strong smell of chemicals, the whole front of store was grass seed and garden chemicals fertilizers etc. I was looking for birdseed, luckily they had it piled on the floor by the registers on the first floor. Made for the exit, only one of the front doors was operational. That door opened in with a handle so I had to drop my bag of seeds to open the door. Won't be going back. read more

Stopped in with a problem I was having with a lamp. The guys didn't just point to the aisle with lamp parts, they took the time to check out the problem then recommended that I leave it for another colleague who could diagnose and fix the problem if needed. I friggin' love neighborhood hardware stores. I love to peruse the aisles, see & learn about items I don't necessarily need at the moment but maybe will one day. In some cases I'll buy it and find a way to use it or, end up gifting it to someone that could use it. This store is pretty big and has two floors! Aisles are narrow since they have more product than they really need. But, this means they got more stuff to see. Two fun finds; a fly swatter with a telescoping arm! and a football themed goal post to hold up a roof downspout. (This was recently on clearance at my usual Ace, so I'm not sure if it is still available.) I say this whenever reviewing neighborhood hardware stores but.. Those small brick and mortar stores found in your neighborhood is usually the first place to start when needing home improvement for your home. These stores always stock needs of homes in the zip code. Everything from roofing to air vent covers, mailbox components, fencing, air filters of any kind, paint, security, etc Scanning reviews here, most are either in favor or not concerning their effectiveness in giving customer service. In my experience it's been both good and negligent depending on who is on shift. I've had youngins eager to point me to aisles / shelves where items can be found. And others that found small talk conversations over hardware use, well, as fun as talking to an empty can of paint. This store is sleepy. You're not going to find the hustle of your local Home Depot and pricing will not be as low as big box chain stores. But, you'll find needs in a jiffy and maybe discover the handyman in yourself. I love this place. I went there to look for sleds and shovels. They have a good selections of shovels but were out of sleds. They saw some in the back office so they asked me to give them a few minutes to verify if those were reserved. The guys went through all of them for me. Unfortunately they were reserved for their online customers. While I left without a sled and feeling disappointed, I really appreciate their good customer service . read more

the store is well stocked and has ample parking. My complaint is I saw a Scott's product advertised on the Ace Hardware site on sale was 79.99 on sale 59.99 online or in store. By far the most helpful group of people I have met in a long time! Everyone works together to help you try to procure the product that you need! I stopped by to pick up Heet for my car (thanks, Chiberia) and Mike (who works downstairs in Autos) was extremely helpful in finding the product but also giving me his honest expert opinion on what it is and what it's for. That's so helpful to me because it's the quality of a bunch of people I can trust- rather than someone who is just there for a part time job. This gentleman with glasses (I can't remember his name) was amazing and found me a pink flashlight and the woman at the front desk was great- because this Hardware Store is not just for men- it's for ladies too! She made sure that this ACE sells OPI nail polish, eclectic salt-n-pepper shakers and random wallets and mani-pedi tools. I suppose they are there in case you break a nail after you fix your wooden shelf! Thank you so much Skokie Ace Hardware! Let me tell you why I love my local Ace Hardware store. The emphasis is on LOCAL. Nothing beats local customer service from people who live in your neighborhood. Liz at the front desk is always goes above and beyond in making sure your needs are met and that you are satisfied. So here's the long story short: I come into this Ace because they have the item I have been looking for everywhere. I arrive at this location at around 8:00 -9:00 AM. I understand that the mornings can be pretty slow, so I found it normal that it was rather quiet during my visit. If I hadn't known exactly what I was looking for, I would not have found it. Upon entering, I was not greeted by any employee. IN FACT NOBODY WAS THERE AT ALL. Anyway, I am quite good at locating things myself, so that part didn't bother me the most. I grabbed all my items and make my way to the register. THERE IS STILL NOBODY IN THE STORE. I wait as patiently as I can, and finally knocked on the back "employees only" room to find someone who could ring me out. STILL NOBODY IN THE STORE. I start browsing the aisles in search of someone, still nobody was able to help me. You would think that someone would be on the sales floor, or that the DOORBELL that sounds extremely loud when the door opens and closes would alert someone working to get themselves out on the floor to assist customers. After 10 minutes of wandering around looking for someone I finally just decided to yell "HELLO"a few times loudly and pretty barbarically . Only after that did someone come out from the back room and check me out. SHE THEN HAD AN ATTITUDE AS IF I DISTURBED HER PEACE OR SOMETHING. OKAY FIRST OF ALL, I SHOULD BE THE ONE HAVING AN ATTITUDE WITH YOU FOR NOT DOING YOUR JOB. Im usually pretty patient so I don't really mind waiting a few minutes or something, but someone should really be on the sales floor at all times when someone is in the store... someone could have stolen a million things and gotten away with it. read more

Ace sold me hand sanitizer that the sales person said it protected against covid-19. $10.00 and does not contain alcohol. They are also charging $2.00 for a paper mask. Total rip-off. Been shopping there for 17 years but no more. I am done with this store. Shame on them. read more

I grew up with friendly neighborhood hardware stores. You know, the kind where the owner was always there and knew every square inch of his store. Somehow, I became conditioned to believe the bigger the better and in that process, almost all the neighborhood hardware stores disappeared. You pull into a Home Depot, Lowe's or Menard's and walk a block or two from your parking space. It's difficult to find what you're looking for and many times when you find an employee they send you to the wrong location a half mile away. You wait and wait in line to check out and generally it's an overall unpleasant shopping experience. I rediscovered Skokie Ace Hardware and am pleased on all fronts. Parking is close by. So far, they've had everything I wanted to buy. Prices are competitive. However, the best part is seeing the same friendly staff every time you go there--just like the old days. The cashier is particularly friendly (I wish I knew her name to share in this review). I've watched the owner replace the battery in an elderly customer's garage door opener. Even the customers seem friendlier than those in the big stores. I've stopped a few for advice and they've been eager to help. We need to support businesses like Skokie Ace Hardware before they become extinct. There's no reason not to support them. They beat their competition and they treat you as if their livelihood depends on it--because it does. read more

I've been to so many big box hardware stores where the clerks are clueless and if you're looking for screws, for example, you're screwed: they are out of half of everything. I am always amazed how well stocked this store is and how friendly the staff is. Liz in particular will help you hunt down just about anything, and has a heart of gold. Nice local hardware store. It is very sufficient for your every day needs. Customer service here is top notch. Everyone I have met here is extremely friendly. Free popcorn does not hurt either. This is not a place to go for big jobs, but it is good if you need a small tool, paint, etc. They send out coupons regularly so watch out for those deals! read more

There just isn't anything to justify the higher cost of everything here--tends to be lower selection and worse quality. I've bought a few small items here because my first thought is always to go to the local hardware store, but this just isn't a good one. It's definitely self help. I don't know anything so that's usually why I go local--not to save money but to get the help I need to do things right but if there isn't that then what? I got 5 keys cut here and 2 of them didn't work. Since I was moving to Chicago that sucked extra. I wouldn't be putting up the review if the keys just didn't work alone, but like... they charge $3 to cut and that's bugging me. That's pretty expensive, just like everything else there when you don't have the extra service or increased reliability. read more

This is the best place get any of your household repair needs. I have been shopping here my whole life. Even since I have moved into Chicago. It's no longer around the corner, but I go out of my way to get what I need, the first time. If you need a key made, don't go anywhere else. They use the older style key machine that actually WORKS!! The ones at Home Depot, Walmart, etc are designed for the morons who use them, and never make accurate copies. The hardware selection (nuts, bolts, screws, and the like) here are top notch. They have everything from the smallest screws to huge structural type bolts. Very well organized and well stocked. I have found several hard to find items here and many occasions. read more

This is the hardware store to go to. They have been consistently helpful, but yesterday's experience was well above and beyond. I needed a tap to repair a bolt hole. I have to tell you this is the first time I have been in the store, I stood in line and waited to check out. I actually saw the woman do four things at one time. I couldn't believe my eyes, when it was my turn she stood and looked at me and said I can't do five things at once but I could do four. I got such a chuckle, I love the store, I just moved into the neighborhood and I will always come back. Today, I went into ACE to see if a funeral could be avoided for my stapler. It was a fairly new Swingline but after I had dropped it, the back was jammed. Reggie at the back register took a good look and tried to get it opened. His colleague also tried but to no avail. But then, as I returned to the back, Reggie used a small tool and found staples jammed in the front. He carefully managed to clear the jam. Then, he put new staples in and got it working. I still can't believe it. A third guy found the wall of staple packages and searched for the right ones. Did you know that there are several sizes?! Reggie and his crew are what hardware stores should be about - friendly and very helpful. Thanks, Reggie, for your perseverance and for saving my stapler from a premature death. My go-to in Skokie for anything hardware. I own a 90-year-old home and stuff breaks. They have the stuff to fix my broken stuff and the help I need to figure any broken stuff project out around the house. Locally owned and operated this is one of the early Ace Hardware stores. This one has survived and done it well. They are amazing at space management and have managed to fit a huge assortment in a tight space. Just had another great experience in the Skokie Ace Hardware. I was in search of a squeegee and other window washing equipment to get the grime off of my balcony doors. Lizzie saw me looking around and asked if she could help. When I told her what I wanted to do she showed me where the stuff I wanted was, but then she told me her personal experience cleaning windows and sold me on a product I would never have tried. Hands down, it was THE BEST recommendation I have ever gotten in a hardware store. The product worked perfectly, just as Lizzie predicted, and it was easy to use and inexpensive. I was a fan of big box stores for a long time. Over time I realized that shopping at the big box stores was like hitting myself in the head with a hammer and that it would feel better once I stopped doing that. So I went to Ace on Oakton in Skokie. Imagine my surprise: nice people with smiles who actually helped. Not only did they help but they seemed happy to be helping. I got what I wanted and was in and out in less time than it takes me to park and walk into a big box store. They had what I wanted. If they didn't have it they would get it for me. But the real shocker was the pricing. I took a very good look at pricing at Ace. It was about the same as the "bargain" I got in the big box stores. I get better service, more smiles, I get what I want, I get in and out quickly, and the price is good. If you want to shop at the big box stores you can borrow the hammer I used to use to hit myself in the head....I don't need it any more....I only shop at Ace. read more

I just went in there with a return. Came in the front door and the sales clerk stared me down without a word (not a good start). Went to the back cashier and the woman was pretty sick of her job. Could hardly get the words out. Yeah, its hot out, but you have a job, get over it. Will go to another Ace where "friendly" is the name of the game. read more

This has been my hardware store since I moved in this area in 70s. They always has real good customer service and every year I come back for root killer, weed killer and special cleaner supply. But , today it is a different story. I bring a root killer to the cashier to checkout, and I mentioned that Home depot is a lot cheaper, can she match the price. Then , she gave me a 10 minutes lesson that they were family business and people come to ACE is for service, on and on.........real loud..... , in front all the customers. And tell me," if home depot is cheaper , go , go there , don't buy it here............" I really like the sale people in the store, they are always helpful and polite. I hope they will improve their business tactics and keep up with their competitor for I don't want them to close the store. read more
