Jose and Monique, owners and primary facilitators, provided exactly what I needed: a very controlled, no-nonsense, small group environment to assist me, the handler, learn how to engage more effectively with my dog. They are a wealth of knowledge and I successfully implemented many of their suggestions. For example, a "softer" approach to the prong collar I was using, and better timing with the remote collar. I now realize I talk too much to my dog and should use more indirect, non-verbal "pressure" to communicate commands to my dog. Jose and Monique of JD Powerhouse offer a 6-week DIY Saturday afternoon basic obedience class. I enrolled to "refresh" my ability to "communicate with" or effectively handle my dog. I have participated in various obedience classes with my dog over the years, so my dog was somewhat trained. She's a 4-year-old, American Pit Bull Terrier, with no major behavior issues. Although, she did not like when other dogs barked at her (or me) and would react for short bursts until they passed us on our daily walks. I was referred to JD's by a colleague. I am so thankful. I was prepared to hear that Piper and I needed all of this work and it would require their board and train but after meeting José and Monique, they quickly instilled confidence in me that Piper and I just needed to improve our communication and some basic skills. What I really appreciate in addition to their expertise, clear direction and upfront approach is that they didn't sell me on what I didn't need. José made it clear very quickly that it would not be the best use of money to board and train my dog, Piper. Instead, he offered me a customized package that would maximize the training and my money. That's badass. I have gone to other evaluations where trainers were trying to scare me into pick the most expensive package by over inflating the concerns I had. Jose is the real deal. Our pandemic rescue dog has gone from lacking confidence to becoming a remarkably more balanced dog in just 30 days. This review is long overdue, guess I've just been busy enjoying my dogs, which was a rare occasion before taking my 6yr old Pit Bull Kooper to JD's Powerhouse K9 Bootcamp! Kooper had some serious issues, not only would he hide and tremble for hours at any loud noise, I had to keep him isolated from other dogs and house gets due to his dog/people/territory aggression issues. It was not a fun life for Koop or us. Thanks to Jose and Monique and their continued support, after graduating bootcamp, Kooper now goes outside during storms, lives with another dog and enjoys spending time with family and friends. If you are in need of any kind of help with your dog, you can't go wrong with JD's Powerhouse K9 Bootcamp. I'm sharing Koops story to give you an idea of the amazing results you get with JD's Powerhouse. I adopted Koop from the Maricopa County shelter about 5 years ago. He was skinny, skittish and scared. I wish I would of known about JD's Powerhouse K9 Bootcamp back then, I would of taken Koop straight to them. During the next 5 years, I tried various training and activities. He did pick up some obedience skills and even learned how to run agility courses, but none of this was helping with his behavior issues and they continued to get worse. His behavior issues went from dog on dog aggression to lunging at house guests and even bit someone he knew for years. It got to the point that I had to lock him up in a room when guests came and forget about letting him around other dogs. I was doing some research hoping to find anything that might help and came across JD's Powerhouse K9 Bootcamp! I attended a few classes and liked what I saw. Its NOT just cookie cutter dog training. Before they begin training they actually take the time to get to know the dog and the dogs issues while building a relationship with them. Jose and Monique accepted Kooper into the board and train bootcamp. Yes, it was hard leaving him there, but it was so worth it and they kept me posted. During the time Koop was away at Boot camp, I took in a stray pit bull while we looked for the owners or another home. I quickly got attached to this cute little girl, however I didn't think keeping her was an option due to Koops dog issues. I talked, Jose and Monique and we decided to introduce Minnie (the stray) and Koop. Minnie went to boot camp during the last few weeks of Koops stay so they could work with them. It was finally graduation day and Kooper was coming home, but not alone, Minnie was coming with him. I was a bit nervous about bringing them both home knowing Kooper's history with dogs. Fortunately, the training did not stop at graduation day, Jose and Monique followed us home and helped get them settled. They came to the house several times during the next few weeks for follow up training. We also continue to attend the client maintenance classes and Minnie goes to play group. It's been 3 months since Kooper graduated boot camp and Minnie became part of the family. There were a few rough spots at first, but we worked through it and have since enjoyed having family and family dogs over and recently took a family road trip that included two night stay and at pet friendly hotel. I am so thankful to a friend who recommended JDs for my dog! They truly care about the dogs and take the time to understand them and build their trust. They also provide resources, through follow up lessons and weekly group sessions, to teach and give practice time to the pet parents so the dog can be successful. JDs helped my dog build confidence and learn obedience and calm state of mind, even though he is a high energy cattle dog rescue who just wants to play or work all day long. If I am ever asked for a recommendation for any dog training or behavioral advice, I will not only strongly recommend JD's Powerhouse Bootcamp, I will insist that they check out their FB page and Instagram at a minimum. If the videos, pictures, insightful information and events posted on social media don't convey the expertise and passion that Jose, Monique, and the Powerhouse crew possess for helping dogs, spending time talking with them will. When you meet with the team and see how they interact with your dog, explain their behavior, and explain how to build a solid relationship with your dog you will be sold. Most importantly, after building a foundation, they will teach YOU how to communicate effectively with your dog. We knew that the issues we were experiencing stemmed from our inability to communicate effectively. After our dog graduated from bootcamp, the difference was unreal. Most importantly, the follow up training and weekly client maintenance classes have allowed us to maintain the foundation that was set during bootcamp. This kind of post-bootcamp follow-up is what sets them apart. It gives us confidence that we are communicating properly with our dog, and we know that we will always have support from the powerhouse crew. On top of all that, it's clear that helping dogs is not just a job to them, it is a passion and a way of life. In addition to training dogs for clients, they take in dogs from shelters such as Mayday Pitbull Rescue to train and help them become more adoptable. Regardless of the horrible past these dogs have had or the behavioral problems they must overcome, Jose, Monique and crew will help them move forward.
