I chose The Barking Dog based on its strong online reviews, but unfortunately my experience was extremely disappointing. This was my first time ever boarding my dogs, and I only scheduled this stay because I had an unexpected family death. Naturally, I was already stressed, and this experience made things worse. When I dropped my dogs off, the front desk employee was working alone. While I understand being busy, the entire check-in process was very disorganized and frustrating. After taking my dogs to the back, she spent time inventorying my items, answering calls, and helping other customers--without once acknowledging me or letting me know I was free to go. I stood there for about 15-20 minutes with no communication, only to eventually be told she didn't need anything else from me. During my dogs' two-night stay, I received zero updates--no messages, photos, or report cards, despite those being features listed in their system. As a first-time boarding experience, this was especially concerning and left me wondering how my dogs were doing the entire time. Pickup was just as disappointing. While bringing my dogs out, one of them got her foot stuck in the doorway and was yelping in pain, and the employee continued pulling her on the leash instead of stopping to help. I was handed my dogs quickly with no update on how they did during their stay. The dogs also smelled so bad when we got them, I had to immediately bathe them when I got home. Overall, the lack of communication, attentiveness, and basic care was very upsetting--especially given the circumstances that led me to need their services in the first place. I had another boarding appointment already scheduled for April which I canceled and will not be returning or recommending this facility. read more

Zero stars. If you want your dog to come home sick every time he stays at the Barking Dog and leave you with hundreds to thousands of dollars in vet bills, this is the place to go. I was a loyal customer for 10 years, but ever since the facility was taken over by the current owner, Mitch, a few years ago, it has completely gone downhill. It started with my dog developing strange rashes after boarding stays that required medication to clear up. Then he contracted kennel cough. When I picked him up, he was obviously sick, yet no one contacted me to let me know there had been an issue or warned other customers after I reported it. The final straw was after a 9-day stay when I picked him up and immediately knew something was wrong. Again, nobody informed me he appeared ill. He stopped eating, then stopped drinking, and after multiple vet and emergency visits, he was diagnosed with valley fever. I reached out to Mitch, explained the repeated illnesses connected to boarding stays, and provided medical records documenting everything. His response was that he would do nothing unless I met with him in person -- not even refund the boarding stay. I agreed to meet and followed up multiple times, but after requesting all the records, he completely stopped responding. The lack of accountability, concern, and basic customer service is unbelievable. This owner only cares about money, not the wellbeing of the dogs in his care. After 10 years as a customer, I am beyond disappointed and disgusted by how this was handled. If you want your dog repeatedly exposed to illness, and for management to ignore you afterward, this is the place. read more

I have been a loyal customer of the Barking Dog for 6 years. The owner accused me of stalking a man who is his mentor, a man I know of but do not know. I am a 67 year old mother with heart failure, pulmonary disease and a bleeding disorder. I grew up in Paradise Valley and Scottsdale. I have never stalked anyone . I have no inclination to do either. I am elderly, disabled and have heart failure. I assured the owner that it was not me. He said he had video. That would be impossible as I have handicapped plates on my car and only park in areas where I can manage the walk. If you have a loved one you care for please do not use this business. I used to think it was wonderful. Now, I know how deceitful and cruel the owner and his mentor are in real life. I grew up in this valley and I do not want to see anyone else hurt by them. read more

Dusty loves this place for playcare, and I love it for grooming! Dusty gets pool time every time, he gets a yo-pup treat, and he plays with lots of other dogs. When it's time for a grooming, Zack's our man. He does a great job cleaning up Dusty's thick coat. I'm so glad I found this place! A nightmare. I know PetSmart has a bad reputation but it's much better than this place and I've never had such a bad experience. They have literally 12 pieces of paperwork and then they can STILL deny your dog. What a colossal waste of time. Not to mention the fact they've had multiple kennel cough outbreaks here. The Barking Dog is the #1 doggie daycare and boarding facility in the valley. Hands down. They have zero competition - I know because I tried 5 doggie daycare facilities before finding them - no other facility comes close to their quality, professionalism, knowledge, or care. It's a super clean, smart, and safe system. My dog LOVES it here. He loves the people as if they were his own family and is excited to see them when we walk in the door. I can't say enough good things about this place. I know they have a bad reputation after the kennel cough outbreak, but I truly believe they did things the right way. A lot of people are posting really mean and awful comments about the staff and how the situation was handled. It is my understanding that once a few people mentioned their dogs coughing, they sent out an email explaining that they had to close their doors in order to deep clean the facility and prevent the spread. It seemed successful and my dog hasn't had a problem. My dog did get kennel cough and it lingered for months, but after two rounds of atb and time spent at home away from other dogs he was able to get over it and we got a veterinarians "green light" prior to going back to Barking Dog. I think that some people are blaming the facility more than they are the people who have sick dogs, which isn't fair. If an owner takes a sick dog to daycare, then it's not the fault of Barking Dog... and I would imagine when you have 20+ dogs barking and playing all day long that it'd be slightly difficult for any employee to recognize the 1 sick k9 out of the whole lot. Only my opinion. I have only had one or two times where my dog came home with a scratch or a bump that concerned me, but let's be real... they're dogs! My dog is rowdy, loves to play, so go figure. He is a sheltie and his fur is super thick around his neck, so they have forgotten or missed that his yellow collar is still on before leaving and we find it when we get home. Totally not a huge deal, but for transparency purposes I'll mention that they're not perfect (crazy, right?). The color-coded collars let them know which play group to put them in, in case you were wondering. Otherwise, he is ALWAYS tired and I think he has a great time. The YouTube videos they post daily are proof that my little guy is loving his life when he's at Barking Dog, LTD. I've been taking my dog there for almost 2 years now and it's been awesome. My dog literally perks up and gets SO excited when I mention going to LTD. read more

We have been using The Barking Dog in Scottsdale for a couple of years to board our dog when we travel and for grooming. We have never had a problem before with the care. We thought that they were diligent in their care of our beloved dog. However, I am so upset and sad. Our dog was boarded for 7 nights during the first week of March. He returned home infested with fleas. The poor thing has gone through bath treatments, etc and my daughter's home has been stripped apart to remove the fleas in her home. When I called The Barking Dog to tell them, I received an insipid "I am sorry". But that can happen. The barking Dog does not require an owner to tell them that his or her dog has fleas or that a dog should take a flea preventive medicine. We are dealing with their poor management. Our wonderful dog is suffering and all they can say is things can happen. On top of everything else, our dog was bathed by them right before pickup and they couldn't see anything wrong to notify us. All in all this is a major disappointment by a company that I thought I could trust with our loved one. I WAS WRONG!!!! read more

I love Barking Dog and the staff. Both my daughter and I can't say enough good things about Kim, Ashlie, Sierra and Sage. They have always been friendly and have gone above and beyond. Our dogs are always thrilled to come here and have always been greeted with smiles and kindness. My dog's tail is always wagging coming here. He is 115 lbs and when he doesn't want to go somewhere or do something he is pretty immovable. I have taken my 4 1/2 year old dog to day cares ever since he was 3 months old. We have been coming to Barking Dog ever since we moved here about a year ago. I don't know of ANY boarding facility that can prevent kennel cough. You can only do the best you can which is what they DID! All it takes is for one owner to ignore their dog's symptoms and bring them to day care and it spreads. Kind of like the parent who knowingly brings their sick kid to school and gets the other kids sick. It happens. We all know it does so put the blame where it belongs. Ask your vet if all dog's sicknesses are prevented by their shots. No. Ask your doctor if the flu shot prevents all strains of flu - No. I got the email about the situation, our dog's did NOT get sick and we understood the situation. We experienced a similar situation in the last city we were in about 2 years ago - there was a county wide outbreak and many doggie daycares had to close down temporarily until it was resolved. I missed being able to bring my dog to daycare when Barking dog was closed but I am so glad they went above and beyond to make sure that when they reopened the dogs were as safe as possible. So again, I just want to say how much we appreciate Kim, Ashlie, Sierra, Sage and the staff who look after our dogs. It is not always easy overseeing a bunch of dogs, especially those that like to rough house and I think they do a GREAT job. I can sometimes get overwhelmed with 2 dogs! We are very glad to have Barking Dog to take our dogs to. read more

Took my 4 month old Standard poodle, Zelda to this facility today, for a 6 hrs. I was so impressed, that I wanted everyone to know.. she even got a report card! So sweet.... I was able to tour, and being a clean freak, I was checking everything I could see, it was spotless, in every way... my plan is to give Zelda social time, and prepare her for the long hot summer.
