Well I have been hiding out in Bay Ridge at what I consider the best little secret South of Manhattan. I love the pizza here, yes the cookies are delicious and the Blueberry Cobbler is so good. But the pizza is so wonderful. Yes PIZZA, with so many sub-par pizza joints near by this place offers a personal pie for about $10.00 which is equivalent to 4 slices. Its made fresh and the crust is so perfectly thin. Amazing that they offer so many types of pies with different ingredients. Ooooohh don't order the Cal-zone with Ham, I mean the thing is huge. The only problem is that either the moisture from the cheese or ham creates a pool inside the cal-zone. Just not prepared correctly. If there was an option to put no stars I would!!!! I had a party this weekend for my father. I brought in a bunch of different cake toppers and requested it to be put together. I met with the owner twice and went over everything. the cake comes out.. its BLANK !!! not only am i annoyed i paid for everything, it ruined the whole surprise. I called on sunday to speak with the owner when they heard who it was they would not speak with me. I was recommended to go there for their charolette russe. I purchased 4 charlotte russe plus 4 rolls and paid $16.10. (Rip Off!) No price list. After my purchases, I couldn't wait to drive home and try the charlotte russe to flash back on my childhood. So I drove back to Long Island and opened the box. What an insult, that they had the nerve to sell a stale disgusting overpriced pastry. The "whipped" cream was OLD, and had a film on it. But even more repulsive was when you got to the cake, it was hard as a rock. It was so stale, that it was not consumable. You couldn't cut it with a fork. What a disgrace that they think that they can get away with such fraud. AND AT THOSE PRICES! I ended up throwing 3 1/2 Charlotte Russes in the garbage. They were absolutely horrible. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY 2 boxes of Entemann's. You are guaranteed fresh products. If it wasn't that I live on the east end of Long Island, I would have gone right back and demanded my money back! They made me a cake for my wedding on 10/8/21. I left the cake topper the night before with their girls. But guess what? They forgot to put it on. All they could say was oh we are sorry. Went to get a tres leches cake. Girl at the register pics one up, the one I pointed to because I wanted pink, she said it's tres leches but the baker forgot to put a sign on it. I always hesitated to enter this bakery because of the name. I mistakenly thought it was 'Jean Genet'; and had something to do with psychodrama. Way wrong. I had a good meal here. There's a wide variety of pastries; the place is very clean and cheerful; bright; good-smelling. Four little deuce tables to eat-in-if-you-please. The service is fun: usually 2-3 cute, young, almond-eyed, pony-tailed brunette girls wearing matching shirts and sporty caps; gossiping and beaming smiles. Very positive: The pizza is unusual and refreshing; distinct from every other I've found in Bay Ridge. I've said many times how *most* pizza in Bay Ridge tastes the same. Not this pizza. It meets a few crucial requirements right-off-the-bat (and therefore needs to be taken seriously): thin crust, sweet--but not too sweet--sauce. JD features a 'la nonna' slice but the pepperoni which goes atop is *extraordinary*. REAL pepperoni. It is clearly hand-cut off some kind of premium meat. It is not the thin, salty, mass-manufactured bland half-dollar slices which you see everywhere else. So-so: The front case claims to hold Italian gelati and I gave it a try. Well, it wasn't gelati; but that doesn't mean it was bad. It was more like a sticky kind of soft-serve; it was much colder than gelato and very gummy. I don't mind because I really wouldnt expect any place in Bay Ridge to offer actual gelato. Jean Danet's version of gelato would still be great for kids; and it was certainly worth at least one try. I love coming here in the spring/summer just for their gelato and pastries. I'mnot sure about the pizza, but their desserts are light and creamy. C'est incroyable!!! Hands down, the best French bakery in NYC! I've been coming here since I was 12 years old and the fellow who owned it lived in back of my grandparents on E. 36th St (in Brooklyn). Though it's been sold at least several times since, they've been smart enough to sell the recipes with it and they haven't changed. I can purchase the same exquisite mocha cake with buttercream frosting and icing that I did when I got engaged 34 years ago as I can now. German chocolate cake, still delicious, comes in a cup now, instead of a cake form. Napoleons are without equal as are cream puffs. Shall we go on? You get the picture and don't forget to take home a lb. of butter cookies as you leave the bakery. The only difference is now Jean Danet offers wood or coal fired pizza and gelato and besides being a patisserie (cake bakery) they are also a bouangerie (bread bakery). I have mixed feelings about this place. If you have been sitting on the wretched R train for what seems like eternity, desperately craving any kind of cake (as long as it has a ton of frosting), this is your place. Located a block from the 77th street stop, it's worth the detour in exchange for quieting your urges. You will have a ton of options when it comes to heavily frosted cakes but unfortunately none is really memorable and a few of them taste almost identical even though they are called different things. Once in a while they are also stale. But again, if you had a rough day at work and you need cake, they'll give you cake (which is a little better than grocery store cake). Now if you have some time (or you're close to 86th street) and you want amazing European-style, fresh-whipped cream and strawberries kind of cake, then head to the small, inconspicuous but oh-so-delicious bakery between Century 21 and Starbucks (going to be nice here and not mention the name...). Everything looks nice in the display case every time I go, but I never remember that I don't really like any of it. There's too much cream in everything and not in a good way. Another disappointing holiday purchase. For Thanksgiving I ordered two pies (among other things). The pies were stuck to the aluminum plate and could not be removed for serving without the crust sticking to the bottom of the plate! For Christmas I paid over $80 in purchases and the Strawberry Short cake was so stale we wound up throwing it out. I am very disappointed and this is the last straw I will not be returning. I think because of Covid they perhaps are not throwing out items when they are past the state of being fresh. I had loved this bakery but prices are too high these days to be throwing food out. I think overall this is a very good bakery, but I have gotten some misses. A piece of cake that was very stale, and a rock hard raisin scone- these issues are due to old product that should be removed. The Linzer tart, the butter cookies, apple pie, all excellent. Also, sometimes if you show up close to closing they try to discourage you from getting anything. And by close I showed up a couple of times 15-20 minutes before they closed and they said they already put everything away. While I was in the Bay Ridge area, I decided to stop by this pasty shop to get a coffee and one of their many cookies/pastries. The server was so nice! She gave me a free cookie with my coffee. I couldn't believe how delicious their cakes and quiches looked in the counter. I noticed a lot of people ordering cakes, and they looked absolutely amazing for about 20 dollars or so. So, I decided to bring it back for an exchange - I paid $27 at a small Bay Ridge bakery, so I kind of thought that if they sold me something I didn't like, they'd be willing to exchange it for something else. Instead, the teenage manager (?) asked me if I had eaten any - which was rather evident by the whole 'didn't like it' statement, and refused to do anything about it when I told her I had. I suppose it is a business's prerogative to not back up their goods, but it's certainly mine to bitch about them online when they don't. TL:DR Cake wasn't tasty, place refused to exchange it because I had already eaten some - which would be the way I found out it wasn't tasty. One star. read more

I forgot the strawberry short cakes have some issues so I ended up ordering it every time since it's my favorite cake. This time I finally decided to write a review. Normally the creams on the cake are soft. Not sure what they used for their strawberry shortcake, it's like biting a piece of butter every time when I tried to eat the cream on top. Service was crappy today too despite the past few times were ok. The girl threw me an attitude when I asked to pay for my coffee and she told me 'we are all busy with other customers'. She could've told me to put down $1.50 since they were all over the place and there was no set location for cashiers. Also, I noticed they never asked if I want to stay or go when I order my pastry, which is fine, I'd just find myself a table and serve myself. It's cheesy, dense, a little moist and not too sweet. 7 layer cake was pretty dry and not that good at all. I won't get it again. Service is not good.I had to wait about 10minutes to order although there was no customer ahead of me. One server was helping someone pick up the cake and the other was just there behind the counter doing random stuffs and told me she would help me in a sec. That was the longest second ever. The best cheesecake in Bay Ridge. If creamy, crust less cheesecake is your thing then you must try it. It's so creamy that it melts in your mouth. The blueberry cheesecake is my favorite. The Strawberry Shortcake is yummy too! Beware: the strawberry shortcake does not come in a slice. Rather, it's the strawberry cake w/ custard and instead of whipped cream, it's buttercream. The Napoleon is perfect if you're like me who prefers custard but not an overkill of it. Just the right amount of custard to the flaky pastry layers. We came in to order a wedding cake kind of spontaneous and had no idea what we wanted. The lady at the bakery was very helpful with whats possible for the amount of people we would have. We very quickly decided on a very simple one tier cake. Then she asked us about flavors and we were not prepared what we wanted and probably a little annoying for the worker. So we decided on vanilla cake, with chocolate cream with strawberries and whipped cream frosting. We originally planned on adding flowers to the cake that we would bring it the day of the delivery. We decided to not do the flowers a few days prior to the actual date we needed the cake and just went by to let them know we are not bringing in any flowers. Also we ordered 25 heart shaped cookies as little favors with our initials and the date. Decided very quick on icing and colors. We had both delivered. The bakery called us to make sure what we were going to do with the cake since we didnt bring any flowers. Asked if we still wanted to add them later. Everyone loved the cake. Great place! - Apricot Roll -- it was alright. It did not taste like apricot. The cream was very stiff. The chocolate on top was good :) - Strawberry tiny cake with lots of whipped cream on top - we were attracted to its cuteness. Once we removed the paper wrapping, we were so sad to see that the cake was only like 1/2 inch high! Lol. It was like a roll cake, but in a different position. Still very yummy, but highly not worth the price - Fruit Tart - delicious! There was this weird hardened white sugar syrup on top that I kept trying to remove! But besides that, it was GREEAT! I loved the shell! :D There are a lot of cakes and [LOTS of] cookies. You can also get your fix of coffee and tea, whatever it is that they served since there was no menu to be found!
