Honestly the best Syrah house I've been to in quite sometime! I say that after spending too many weekends to count wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma County! Jeff Cohn used to be located in Sonoma, but has since moved to Healdsburg, but I still try to visit it when I can. Staff has always been quite pleasant and knowledgeable. Prices have gone up, but everything has across the board in the wine industry, so I am not upset to be honest as this is truly a "you get what you pay for" scenario. As with most wineries since COVID, it's by appointment, but they are happy to take you in on slow days without a reservation, which is great. Parking wise, super easy as there is ample parking and also a ton of food options around for before or after. All and all, a great spot and always recommend! read more

Longtime fan of JEFF COHN wines from Rosenblum to his namesake winery. His variety of Zinfandels from various vineyards are diverse, wonderful, and you are certain to find one you enjoy. I enjoyed his variety of Syrahs more than other makers, and his other blended wines are great value. With new releases, you will enjoy them more with a few years of age. A little bit of patience will be rewarded. read more

The whites were crisp but super smooth which sounds like an oxymoron but after you try them you'll understand. Of all the wine tasting rooms in the Jack London Waterfront area in Oakland, when they were in Oakland, as it seems Jeff Cohn Cellars has relocated to the heart of Sonoma, this may be the smallest and most enterprising of the lot. This was the first stop of a two stop winery tour a friend and I did in the Jack London Square area on a Friday afternoon and the place wasn't busy at all (as there perhaps apt to be as they are only open Friday through Sunday. Winemaker Jeff Cohn has been established in Oakland for more than a decade after coming over from nearby Rosenblum Cellars. Jeff Cohn like many of the smaller wineries, just as those in the Napa Valley, don't grow their fruit locally in the valley, they just have their headquarters and tasting room located there. So it's nice live in a more urban environment like downtown Oakland and still sample the wines that are all sourcing fruit from the same good places that just happen to be making their wines in a warehouse. At Jeff Cohn I learned they like to obtain their grapes from unique vineyards anywhere from Napa to Sonoma to Amador to Paso Robles and they also like to use a lot of concrete vessels to store and age their wines. So it's nice to get a fresh taste of other regions from a winemaker that tries to think outside of the proverbial wine box. On this day there were five choices on the tasting menu. For fifteen dollars we could try a Viognier, a Pinot Nior, two Zinfandels, and something called a Misc. Stuff (from Paso Robles). It was that 2013 vintage from the Alta Colina Vineyard that provided an abundant and intense flavor profile of blackberries and cherries mixed with smoked meats, red cracked peppercorns with faint hints of tapenade. This is a combination not usually found in a combination in a wine. With the strong aromas of wild herbs, blackberry and strawberry jam alongside grilled meats of all things made for a strong flavor that filled the senses. In fact all of their wines were a feast for the senses, their two Zins were both from the Sonoma Valley were exotic in flavor as they were sweet with a little spice. Jeff Cohn Cellars is a great place to kick back and relax while your walking around in the Waterfront area of Oakland. Its homey and unpretentious vibe was a calming presence among the chaos in the city and with some amazing wines that deserve to be sought out by any amateur or aspiring wine aficionado. The tasting fee of 15 dollars for five of their best current vintages is not bad for a tasting room in the city, although if you want that fee waived be prepared to buy not one but two of their signature bottles. The staff is so welcoming that I could envision myself coming back in the future to make a bottle purchase and see what Jeff is cooking up in the cellar. Supporting local vintners this side of the bay is something we should all aspire to do. Jeff Cohn Cellars is just one of many stops that any wine connoisseur making the official "Oakland Urban Wine Trail" must make on a day when they're open. May you return to the heart of Oakland one day soon. read more

Stop #3 on my Oakland Wine Tour! The newest tasting room to hit Oaktown and also the smallest. A nice L-shaped bar with a high top and a large communal table in the corner (that probably seats about 8). Large windows onto the street making it very open and airy. Tasting fee: $15 for about 4 wines, waived if you make a $30+ bottle purchase. The tasting and the wines are definitely a bit more expensive than Dashe and Cerruti, but with that, they were good. I really enjoyed 2 out of the 4 wines we tasted, the tasting room is solid and it was overall a fun experience. At this point, I was a few wineries deep - so specific wines escape me, my b! Go forth and taste for yourself! Ilana/Elana who was (wo)manning the room solo handled the crowd and was quite sweet and very non pressuring to buy wine or even join the wine club, which is always appreciated. We came across Jeff Cohn Cellars while enjoying a nice spring day at the Sonoma Square. The tasting room is steps away, in a nice and intimate setting. We were greeted and hosted by Sally, who has been in the wine industry since the 1980s. She guided us through the tastings, accenting on the subtle elements of each varietal and shared recommendations for other producers and wineries in the Sonoma and Napa Valleys based on our tastes and style preferences. Overall, it was a mid-range tasting ($25 for 4, add $10 for an add'l 2 of their reserve). Tasting fee is waved with 3-4 bottle purchase, regular and reserve, respectively. We ended up parting with 3 (GSM, Grenache, and Viognier), which we are excited to have added to our collection. I love little tasting rooms like this one. The service is personalized, the prices are reasonable, and a lot of times the wine is pretty good. This was our first visit to Jeff Cohn as part of the Oakland Wine Tour and I enjoyed myself. First of all, unless you just absolutely have to go to Sonoma and/Napa (I mean, the wines are great and you should check it out at some point) you should check out the Oakland Wine Trail/Tour. There are some good wineries with people that aren't super pretentious about wine. Like, they're not going to tell you what you taste. Do you taste leather in that Cabernet? Sure, there's leather in it. Do you taste bear hugs in that Chardonnay? Sure, there's bear hugs in that Chardonnay. The point I'm making is that no one will scoff at you if you don't taste what they tell you to taste. Unless you want White Zinfandel, because that's just disgusting. Anyway. The wines from here were very good and they were very well priced. Meaning, I didn't have to make a decision between a bold Cabernet and my electricity bill. It's a smaller setup so you'll probably want to call ahead before you roll in with a tour bus full of people. I don't remember the name of the person that helped us but she was very sweet and very knowledgeable about wines in general. I'll definitely stop in the next time I'm in town. read more

My husband and I went to Jeff Cohn Cellars by accident. We were walking around and saw the Cellars on the corner and I'm SO happy we went inside! For a small winery, they have AMAZING red wines. I'm a huge Zinfandel lover and man, did they impress me with their Zins we got to try today. We had a wonderful time and we highly recommend for anyone who enjoys a good red wine (they do have more than Zin, and they're all great). Regardless, the wines are delicious and definitely high class. They have a great selection - a variety of whites and reds and even a sparkling rose. I was really excited about trying this place with my coworkers but it was a big letdown. The wines were so-so. The tasting fee of $15 was exorbitant. I thought I would at least be able to recoup the fee by purchasing a bottle of the rose, which was the only wine that I enjoyed. Unfortunately, I was told their policy required the purchase of at least three bottles before I could get a credit. Unique high end wine experience. A world of wines outside of the Chard/Cab routine. We asked for a food pairing type reception for 12 and they brought in great charcuterie, salads and flatbreads. Most of all, the wines were special. They focus on small production locally grown Rhône varietals. They also have Zinfandels from select vineyards and a spectacular one from Amador county. We came here yesterday as the culmination tasting room of our Oakland wine tasting experience, to celebrate my sister's birthday. The wines were decent, although pricey for the area and the tasting fee seemed high, at $15. What really disappointed us however, was the service. The woman who served us was unfriendly and seemed disinterested. She also didn't seem to know much about the wines and acted as if she wanted the experience to end as quickly as possible. I had initially planned on buying a bottle there, but after the poor service, we just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.
