Perfect definition of a greasy spoon. It felt sticky when you walked in. And it's a cash only place. They do have an ATM there. The service was fine. We both got the French toast and their touted scrapple sticks. The French toast was as it should be. The scrapple sticks were terrible. Stumbled upon this absolute GEM! It makes sense how this restaurant has been here for 50 years! No fluff or frills! As soon as you walk in, you're teleported to a diner from the 50's. There's so many nostalgic pieces of entertainment all over the place and its so fun to just look around at everything! The staff were so kind and sweet, it made our visit absolutely pleasant. Classic diner feel with a retro vibe. Tables are so COOL! We sat at the Marilyn Monroe table. Not only were there amazing pictures of her life, but there was a bio of facts about her as well on the table. The food is typical, but you go for the experience! Usually a decent spot for a classic diner meal but today they were off. Waitress was busier talking to her friends than attending to other tables. Cook came to our table as much as she did. Hopefully they're splitting tips. The cashier wasn't much better. I was going to let it slide as maybe it was an off day and I have been here several times with better results. Granted it's a Sunday morning and very busy. I put in my order 30 minutes ago. People around me who arrived after me received their food. Waitress kept telling me it was on its way. My food never came nor did the manager get the cooks to put a rush on it. She'd rather see me leave in disgust. I just don't know how some establishments stay in business with such lousy service. PS. If mid 20th Century Archie & Veronica malt shops and Back to the Future big fin American road steel move your imagination, then Jem's Restaurant in East Norristown, PA, may be for you. What from the outside looks like another shopping center fast food luncheonette constrained by its surroundings to be a boring food dealer, is in fact a real trip down memory lane. The joint is a museum of cultural artifacts from the early days of television, with large posters of Rebel Without a Cause, James Dean, and Seven Year Itch, Marilyn Monroe. Perhaps that's why the room was full with retirees and people over the age of 70 (except for those of us needing to eat and run). This place is the original greasy spoon, for all the right reasons. The double "U" counter separated the kitchen from the dining room. My spinner faced the grill operated by two short order cooks who worked smoothly in tandem. I ordered coffee and Jem's Scramble with feta and rye toast. The full insulated carafe of java set in front of me was a nice touch. I listened to the repartee between customers and servers. It was familiar and entertaining. Most everyone seemed to be a regular. I noted the pile of chunk cut red bliss potatoes and metal tray of bacon on the grill. I watched eggs, pancakes, french toast and breakfast sandwiches being cooked and constructed as spatulas flew. I also saw that the grill was not scaped clean between orders, allowing residue from everything grilled there to build up and become part of the next dish. No judgement. Then, my small Scramble arrived, steaming in my face and fogging my glasses. Smelled awesome and looked like a gently beckoning glistening syren. It was delicious. The eggs held the sausage, onions, peppers and feta in a wet/warm embrace, allowing each forkful to hang together with all elements dancing on my tongue. There was also a hint of everything else that came before, making for a mysterious, yet very pleasant flavor. Maybe that is the house secret to success, or just how it accidentally became an amazing greasy spoon. A great small local breakfast restaurant that I have been missing out at. After I have been to Norristown for about a month now I went to the gym almost everyday next to the Gem Restaurant lol I didn't even realize it. Until today. This place is very affordable and the food is amazing! I ordered one of the "Western Omelette" it taste excellent, I haven't have a good omelette restaurant I like since I left Seattle. The omelette is at the prefect temperature. Every bite you eat the white cheese just melt in your mouth with the prefect blend of green/red peppers to go with the bite. This place is very old school and I like it a lot. I believe the owner who was sitting at the bar area came and greet me. Which was really nice of him and I respect that a lot. I will definitely come back here again from time to times. Next time I'm gonna try the meat lovers omelette or something different! Overall ok, BUT BUT BUT you should know they don't use pure pork sausage in their omelettes. The 3rd ingredient in their sausage (I asked to see the label) is soy protein. We were not expecting this. The food is delicious. Service was horrendous and that was the first time ever we had a waitress there literally roll her eyes and argue. What prompted her outburst? After waiting a few minutes after our food arrived I had the audacity to ask for that extra plate we requested at ordering. The waitress brought a dirty plate, then proceeded to wipe it off at the table over our food. She later returned to give an insincere apology and started arguing again. We have been to Jem many times and NEVER had such poor service. It doesn't matter if the wait person is having a bad day. There is no justifiable reason to take it out on the customers. Landed in PA at 7:00am and stopped by for an early breakfast on a Saturday morning. The dining room resembles an original 80's diner and has a family feel. The menu has a large variety of options, all traditional plates. The food came out promptly and tasted very consistent with what you would expect from a small town restaurant. Service was very friendly. The BEST part of my experience: the owner, Tony, stopped by each table and greeted the guests. We had a wonderful conversation and he shared how he started in the restaurant business. I'm from Los Angeles, and you just don't get this type of attention.
