Steve Jenks is the man to see if you need gutter work done in the East Bay. He's one of the few to use Galvanized Steel for his gutters and downspouts, and his website does a good job explaining those benefits, so I wont repeat them here. I've been using Steve for over twenty years, he's local and an expert and does high quality work for a fair price. He's also an expert and problem solver, so just show him the work, and watch in awe. We had rusty gutters in need of replacement, and the property management firm had a company from out of town ready to replace everything at a very high price, and with aluminum gutters. I immediately called Steve and he did a free inspection, and told me what needed to be replaced, as opposed to ripping everything out, and gave me a fair price. He was also an expert on the Home Owners Association paint schemes, and was willing to paint the gutters to match the authorized patterns, something that was a lot more complicated then I realized. I thought the gutters and downspouts were just white, and he showed me what needed to be done. He works fast, cleans up after the job and delivered on time. He is a gem, and comes highly recommended. Aluminum gutters are not as strong as galvanized - you can't lean a ladder against aluminum gutters for example - and in general they're more susceptible to denting and bending - they'll even bend from strong winds; galvanized won't. Also, so-called "seamless aluminum" gutters are seamless only in straight runs - you can't avoid seams at corners. On my house Stephen Jenks installed 5" galvanized ogee gutters with hot-soldered seams and miters at the corners. He added drip-edge flashing all around (nailed to the fascia boards and sealed with silicone sealer) to make sure no water seeps or drips, between roof and gutter, onto the fascia boards: in other words, water from the roof goes only into the gutters and nowhere else. Expert, meticulous workmanship at a fair price. On time, on bid, with no add-ons. And, at the time of initial measuring and bidding the job, no qualifiers or warnings to the effect that "you may need extra this or extra that, I won't know until I remove the old gutters." There was none of that, no up-selling, no exaggerating, no BS of the type I got from others who bid on the job, just meticulous workmanship and hard, honest work. To be complete I should say that there was one qualifier in the bid concerning downspouts - that if any downspout apparently in good condition at initial inspection from the ground, turned out (from above) to need replacement, that the replacement would be optional for an agreed upon price. It turned out that I did need one (1 out of 7) replaced - about 25' - which he soldered to the gutter and strap-nailed to the house (through stucco) for $100. The whole job came in at less than some estimates I got from people who offered a lesser product and more open-ended uncertainty about installation. The new gutters work great, look great unpainted (they'll darken somewhat with age), and, ladies & gentlemen, they do not leak. One last thing: I don't write a 5-star review unless the work is top-notch. It's true I've written several 5-star reviews on Yelp - not because I'm super-generous but because I'm super careful about shopping around, getting reliable information, and interviewing cautiously before I hire any kind of professional. Behind every 5-star review I write, there may be 5, 10, 15 bids that were not retained. Otherwise what's the point of a Yelp review? 6 months before I hired Steve for the gutter replacement, he came to inspect a gutter on my house that I was concerned about. He told me everything was fine. I was so impressed with his thoroughness and honesty ( he could have told me anything to get more work) I hired him to clean and inspect the gutters on the whole house as winter approached. Steven Jenks is a master of his craft. For several days he worked to replace gutters from my 1920's home in the Berkeley Hills. He did an amazing job!!! You cannot tell they are not original. He painted the gutters before installing them, cleaned up every day before he left, was so respectful of the house and garden as he worked. Steve is a man of his word and an excellent communicator. I have a Victorian house and the roof has many corners, as well as a turret. A few years back I made the mistake of having a roofing company put aluminum gutters on for me and they leaked all over the place. As a result part of my roof was even damaged. I called Steve over the summer and luckily he could get me into his schedule. He made custom galvanized steel gutters and did an outstanding job. The work around the turret was especially difficult and he made them to an exact fit. He's a real craftsman. Because of my prior experience, I spent the first two days kind of "looking over his shoulder" but after watching his work for a while, I was confident that he'd do a good job. He started the job exactly when he said he would, and was there every day until he was finished. When he came out for the estimate, he was very thorough, he checked all of the gutters and made recommendations on how to maintain them. As for the gutter replacement, after he was finished with the job, he went through all the work that was completed and made sure that there weren't any other problem areas that needed to be addressed. I wanted to try a stronger less valuable (at the scrap yard) material called CopperPlus, and Mr. Jenks agreed and lined everything up. For reasons out of his control the project did not happen. We own a colonial revival that retains many of its period details. When one of our original redwood gutters (110+ years old) came down in a rainstorm this winter, we knew they were all at risk and it was time to replace them all. We fretted about replacing them with something fitting for the house. The person I initially found turned out to be a complete flake, who did not show up for the job after several months of scheduling and rescheduling. What a breath of fresh air with Stephen Jenks. I feel like I lucked out in having the fates steer me to him. He is a true old school Alameda craftsman. He focuses on quality, takes ownership of the whole job, and wants you to be satisfied Here is a partial list of what I loved about dealing with him: -- He did a top-flight job . The gutters look great, the joints look tight, and the paint job is nice. At the end of the day, this is what you pay for. -- He's fair. He did not try to up-sell me. Instead of cost-prohibitive redwood ($27/foot), he recommended OG steel gutters with molding. They proved to be an excellent match. His quote was competitive, and the final price came in on target. -- He's knowledgeable. He found a flaw in our roofing that had caused the gutter problem in the first place. He explained it to me and fixed it inexpensively. -- He's dependable. Showed up consistently, called me to keep me in the loop. -- He's honest. I left for the weekend with my basement door wide open, with a key in it. He spotted it, locked it, hid the key for me, and left me a phone message. -- He went the extra mile. I had asked him to paint the gutters for me without much explanation. He came back twice to fix the paint job so that it matched our trim better. -- He's cool. Call around & get multiple estimates I think you will find Jenks Gutters to be reasonably priced, professional, on time, and he returns phone msgs. I had leaky a gutter and I got a flyer in the mail from another gutter company. Their estimate: $600. Called Stephen Jenks for second estimate and BINGO: he did a great job for just $150. Contacted Mr. Jenks to replace a damaged section of downspout on our 1920s craftsman. He did a solid job - custom fabricating a piece of galvanized pipe to mimic the original design - at a really fair price. DO NOT USE JENKS GUTTERS!!!! Stephen Jenks is unreliable, dishonest, and unpredictable. Stephen Jenks had me sign a contract and put his start date in writing. When I contacted him to confirm his start date, he said he would not be starting on that date even though I had a painter scheduled to paint my house the week before Jenk's start date. Stephen Jenks actually canceled the contract at the last minute and left me hanging. It was a real nightmare!!! Fortunately, my painter was able to find H&G Construction (510-295-7840) at the last minute. H&G charged me about $200 less than Jenks, completed the job in one afternoon, painted the gutters to match my home, and did excellent work. Jenks was going to take up to 3 days and refused to paint the gutters. Save yourself a lot of stress and frustration and avoid Jenks Gutters!!! read more
