    San Juan Waterhouse

    San Juan Waterhouse

Every November a business meeting takes my husband and me to the Pacific Northwest and each visit…read morewe try to explore a new area. My daughter, who lives in Olympia, Washington, encouraged us to visit the San Juan Islands (and take her with us, of course) this year. I looked at several possibilities and settled on the San Juan Waterhouse because of its location to the ocean, its view of Canada, the fact it had Internet (I thought I might need to work) and its online reviews. We were lucky that our son was also able to join us, so we felt we needed three bedrooms. The San Juan Waterhouse sits on the edge of the Haro Straight. Its water facing wall is nothing but windows, so nearly every location in the house (including the master bathroom) provides an easy view of the water. The house has three bedrooms. The master bedroom is situated so you can see Canada from the comfortable king size bed. The second bedroom is in a room with three walls of windows. This bed is a Queen. The third bedroom has two twin beds and has high windows overlooking the sod roof of the house. The main room of the house has comfortable furniture surrounding a beautiful stonework fireplace (gas) and padded window seats with many pillows for reading and gazing at the water. The kitchen. Oh my goodness, the kitchen! It has everything you could possibly need for cooking (including basic spices) and an amazing Viking stove. I'd never used one of these before and now covet one for my own house. Because my family was not going to be together for Thanksgiving, we had a Thanksgiving celebration two weeks early and cooking the meal was a breeze (and fun) in that kitchen. The kitchen also holds the house's main heat source -- a gas powered iron stove. It really heats up the place -- even the master bedroom which is down a long windowed hallway. The house has two bathrooms. One, as previously mentioned, has views of the water through the windowed French doors. (they have curtains, so don't worry about privacy). This bathroom has a claw-foot bathtub and a separate shower. The second, smaller, bathroom holds a second claw-foot bathtub (no shower). While the house itself is amazing, the best part is the location. The architect took great pains to fit it in with the surroundings and Frank Lloyd Wright slopped ceilings guide your eyes to the beautiful landscape out the windows. The house is situated on a small cove. My son and daughter ventured out during a late-night very low tide and found some interesting sea life in the tide pools. We had one beautiful sunny day and one day with strong winds and violent waves. We saw many gulls, three eagles and two small deer. I am already plotting our return to this beautiful house -- hopefully in the summer next time.

The Heather Cabin appears to have been built perhaps in the 1930's and retains its vintage charm. The Heather Cabin is very well maintained and has everything you need to be comfortable. The cabin is right on the water and the views are amazing and ever changing between morning, during the day, and at sunset. And you can enjoy the view from the picture window bedroom, from the many windows in the living room, and from vantage points just right outside the Cabin. Pictures describe better than words do, so here are some photos from our stay. Thank you, Cabins-on-the-Point. We'll be back.

This maybe be an available space for additional guests for events/retreats who would like a lower cost option or hostel like shared space. There is a theater room, living room with large chess set and a game room. The upstairs has many specialty rooms as well as a ball room. The balconies alone are elegant. The base floor has a kitchen, study, multiple rooms, walk in closets, large communal space and the dining room The decor is fairly what you would expect of a castle on the upper floors, and the basement is definitely more of a hostel/vacation rental vibe. what would I change? I would make all of the spaces be as luxurious decorated as the other floors to match. That way all guest get the castle experience. Maybe put extra work into landscaping. Otherwise it is really a lovely space for events and vacations.

We also had family that was trying to log into work here and there for meetings/calls and we had to leave to go into a town coffee shop to do this successfully. Other than that it was fairly fun and different but because of the WiFi issue we won't return.

We first met the owner, Keith, at the Field Arts and Events Hall Wedding Expo. He was personable, helpful, and very accommodating. He had several suggestions--while open to all of our ideas--for where we could hold the ceremony and how we could arrange seating. He was also open to us returning in the evening so we could have amazing photos taken during the "golden hour" lighting. And to top it off, he even supplied the lavender for our wedding reception centerpieces! And as a side note, there was ample parking for our 100 guests. In the end, we can't imagine how our wedding could have turned out any better! If you're getting married on the Olympic Peninsula, you should definitely take a good look at Flatiron Fields. We could not be any happier with our experience. --CB and Edwina Bell

The lavender fields make for some of the most magnificent and frame worthy photos. The staff is friendly, helpful, and people oriented. I cannot recommend them enough for your special day.
