Can I just say, that you feel like Katniss Everdeen here haha. The instructors are very thorough with safety as well as instructions on how to use the bow. First timers the price is $30 while returning is $18. I highly suggest calling ahead and booking a time slot as space is limited. With that being said, although they have a sign-up/roster limit in place, I still felt like I was standing pretty close to the person next to me shooting. Luckily, it was just my friend but I could no imagine if it was a stranger. This place is byob and you can bring food. We did this but I honestly wouldn't do it again lol. Since you're on a time crunch you barely have time to sit down and drink or eat. I'm knocking off one star because I did not see them sanitize the bows, arrows, or tables in between my session and the session after mine. Be sure to wash your hands! Recently started coming here and have had a good experience so far. If it's your first time, they require you to take a 15-minute Archery 101 course regardless of skill level. After this first session, they provide a coupon for a free lane booking - call to schedule. Then after that, it's $18 each time you book a lane (60 minutes of shooting time). The instructors are alright. They run through the 101 class very quickly, and it feels extremely casual. It's not really a "professional" class, which can be good or bad depending on what you're expecting. I think they might just be very bored? Lol One thing I noticed was that the condition of the equipment wasn't the greatest. Some arrows had warped shafts, loose fletching. And the strings on certain bows were getting worn down. Also, I wish the targets were spaced out just a bit more. It felt like I was bumping bows with the people next to me. If they took more care of the equipment and gave us more room to shoot, the experience would be much better! Definitely worth coming here! You'll have a blast whether you're a beginner or a pro. read more

They make things safe & simple for you. :) They have a variety of bow options...definitely want to try a crossbow next time! :D The only complaint I would have is that with the amount of people we had (even though we switched and paired off) still felt a little crowded to me so I wished there was a little more space between targets. read more

So much fun (although it was a bit pricey). It was a birthday gift for me (one year closer to receiving AARP's magazine... yikes!) and the family had a blast doing the '101' class. Last time I ever picked up a bow and arrow? Probably in high school when gym class would do indoor archery for a week with Nerf arrows and you just knew the jocks were going to peg you when the teacher was off flirting with the cheerleaders and leaving the class to our own devices. Here in Jersey City - you have a quick four-minute intro video to watch, the manager/instructor then gives you a thorough "how to" and you're on the floor with your equipment - ready to have a blast for the rest of the hour. I'm giving them a bonus star because it definitely made my b-day a bit more special... especially when you have know-it-all-tweens and it's their very first time experiencing something. It always makes for a great memory. After the hour was up would I be able to hold my own with the likes of Cupid or Robin Hood or Geena Davis or William Tell? Not a chance. (But hey - I did better than my kids, the Mrs and my mother-in-law... so I have some bragging rights, right?) Next time out: we're heading across the hall to partake in some ax-throwing. (Unfortunately my kids will have to wait about six years till they'd be able to join us for that one.) read more

I've been coming here for about a year and bought the 10 passes a bunch of times. Should just start buying the 20. You can use them on friends and if you by 10 at a time it's $16 per lane instead of $18 and 20 is $12 per lane. To reserve a lane you need to call them that week. The staff is really friendly and relaxed and sometimes won't rush you out or let you stay longer if no one signed up for the next hour. All first time people need to do the 101 class first even if it's not your first time doing archery. The only thing is that a lot of their arrows have their fletching broken but recently they have been good at fixing that. Also the black foam you shoot on was so chewed up that arrows would bounce back off of it but they got new ones a couple of months ago so that's good. I really enjoy coming here, it's a lot of fun. They also play music and take requests. Equipment is included in the price which is great, I used to go to a place in Brooklyn and rentals was extra. They also have cross bows! Just ask to shoot one and they will show you how to do it. read more

Jersey City Archery is such a great time! When you first pull up to the spot, you may honestly be confused as to where it is you're going and what you're doing there. It looks very residential so I was surprised to find this warehouse style building right in the middle of people's homes. The reviews are correct, you do need to take an introductory archery class even if you have experience with a bow. Honestly being someone who has their own bow & target set at home I thought it was fun learning the basics all over again with a group of my friends who never touched this stuff before. Came here with three colleagues as a work outing and we had a blast. The one hour time limit was perfect! The two men working were very friendly and helpful and really gave us a great experience. If you are looking for a date night spot or an activity to go with a group of friends I would definitely recommend going to Jersey City Archery. They have a separate area where you can do axe and knife throwing as well and have a pool table. Note: two individuals from my party cancelled last minute and I was still required to pay for their slots which was a bummer. This is the only reason they lost a star. I understand it takes away the opportunity for others to join but it seemed all posts were filled anyway so it didn't make sense to me why I had to pay for the two unused slots. read more

Had an amazing time trying Archery for the first time. Very challenging but fun activity to try. We signed up for the Archery 101 class as it was our first try, rate was $35 per person. Lennie was our guide and he was a very good and passionate instructor. He took his time showing us archery safety and proper technique. It was just us so this helped out even more (pretty much private lesson). Considering the amount of time Lennie Spent with us and amount of time and fun we each had, I believe it was well worth it. Jersey City archery requires you to take an introductory archery class. I just moved from South Jersey more specifically bricktown to Harrison New Jersey in North Jersey. I've never heard of an introductory class ever until I moved up here. Down South we go to the range we pay for the hour and that's it. When you first start going to these ranges they tell you the rules: never shoot when someone's on the floor retrieving their arrows, say firing before everyone starts to shoot, say clear when you're finished firing, and shoot no more than 6 arrows at a time. There are various other rules but you don't need a class to learn this kind of stuff. You go to the range you practice your shot you can talk to the people around you and ask for help if you need - it's a really cool environment down south! I've been shooting over 10 years and I have hunting licenses in two different states: Wisconsin and Jersey. I don't believe I need an introductory archery class but I guess when you figure out a way to make more money off of people you run with it. If you feel the same way I do and are from the area then the bullet hole Annex in Belleville New Jersey offers hourly range time and you can also pay by the half hour. No introductory class needed and the customer service's spectacular! read more

An archery studio in Jersey City? SIGN ME UP! I'd been itching to go since the opening a few weeks back, and finally got to stop in for a class this past Sunday. The verdict? So. so. so fun. Even though I don't have much archery experience, this was still a great time. In fact, I'm not even sure if I've ever tried archery before. Do darts count? Luckily at JC Archery you don't need to have any experience to enjoy yourself. Each class starts with a 30 minute instruction portion, where you'll learn the basics. Chris (owner) and the other staff member were extremely thorough in their instruction and constantly checked in to make sure that everyone was hanging on. Their top priority is safety, and then of course, that a good time is had by all. This was apparent during the entire class! After the instruction, you have an hour to shoot! Chris and staff continuously checked in to make sure that the entire class was shooting properly. Although it's a bit tough in the beginning, I really started to get the hang of it by the end. I definitely plan on returning for future classes. In the winter there isn't much to do on weekends besides eat and drink, and activities like archery are a nice break from all of that. Whether you are a pro or a beginner, I suggest trying out a class here! read more

Such a fun place to go to with friends! This was my first time trying archery and we had a blast! There was only one person assisting everyone and checking people in which I think should be changed. There should be at least two since there were at least 12 people for that session. He was very thorough with instructions. Although there was a lot of small breaks in between for additional instructions, which I would prefer to be less since it was taking up actual archery time. We started a little late too so I think an extra staff would be beneficial to make sure we start on time. But the place is definitely fun and can be competitive. My name is Brian M. For five years, I was stranded on an island with only one goal: survive. And survive I can with some archery practice! I have been archery instructor certified for almost a year and have probably shot twice in that time...not counting archery tag. It's awesome that I can shoot more often now without having to cross the Hudson River. On Valentines Day, I decided to get my cupid on and check this place out right when they opened. I had the whole place to myself and felt like Batman practicing in the Batcave...when you show up, it's a metal door that blends in with the building...feels like a secret lair. I showed them my Archery Instructor Certification and they let me shoot without taking a class. Despite not paying for a class, one of the employees, John, gave me a few pointers that I would have gladly paid for. I had my pick bow wise and was able to shoot for as long as I wanted to. They had music going and made me knowledgeable of the fact that the place is BYOB. So, you know, next time. Well, I'm the only person I know who doesn't need to take the class, but after that, whiskey and arrows. The staff was great, the ambience was great, everything was great. If you've never shot before, I'm telling you, you'll love it and this is the place to go to. Grab a group of friends and learn something new. They have about 16 targets or so and the price is right. So much fun! We booked two "101" lanes for an hour which included an instructional video and help from the instructor Lenny, who was great. He was super nice and gave us information about the different bows and stances and how to improve our shooting. It was $30 per person/per lane for the first time (although if you check in on Facebook there is a $5 discount) and if you go again it'll be $18 and don't have to watch the video again. My girlfriend and I came for a date and it was great! I had never shot an arrow previously and my gf hadn't done so for around 15 years. The instructor, Chris, was really nice and made us both feel quite comfortable. There was a third person who had his own bow and, though he didn't really follow instructions, Chris was easy-going about that, too. I'll be returning for a second class and definitely recommend the place for anyone looking to try something new. What a cool "different" idea for fun on a weekend (or after work during the week if you have time)! JC Archery has rather broad hours, but you must take a 90 min archery 101 course (90 mins and $30/ person, $5 off when you check in on Yelp!) before attending any other 201 or 202 classes or open shooting. No need to bring anything with - they have it all. The fiancé and I went to the 101 class last night. I really appreciated the clear, friendly directions they gave first focusing on acquainting you with the space (bathroom, small concession area, shop, range), then giving simple but effective safety protocols, followed by a lesson on shooting. Ultimately we spent about an hour shooting 3-4 arrows at a time before being cleared to retrieve them from our targets. 16 lanes were available, though there were only 6 of us in my 5:30pm class. Our instructor was friendly and professional. We did start 15 mins late which was a bit of a bummer, but plenty of shooting time anyway. If you come for open shoot you can rent the lane for an hour at $10 and rent equipment for $15 (or maybe vice versa on the prices). I had a lot of fun and hope to come back again soon. I live around the corner and saw this on the uber app while waiting for my car so decided to look it up. Website is appealing as they seem to offer something for everyone so I immediately signed me and hubby up to take the archery 101 class. We arrived on Thursday at 4:15 to sign waivers etc and another couple from JC showed up too. I thought that it would be cool and intimate with just the 4 of us. When Cheyanne (not sure if that's right) began giving instructions, we were all into it when a family of 5 showed up. I'll admit I was annoyed 1) because they were late and Cheyanne had to sign them all in before we could continue and 2) there were small children present and I wasn't sure how that would change the vibe. Long story short, we all had a blast and the kids added to the cool vibe. We can't wait to go back. On another note, the family of 5 travelled from Staten Island because Gotham Archery in Brooklyn has a minimum age requirement preventing their youngest from being able to participate. The bows are showing signs of wear, and the string on your bows is deteriorating. Please do some quality control and safety checks. We were there for a party of 5 (we've gone there almost monthly), but this time, we were there to celebrate our friend getting engaged. On the 2nd round of archery, the celebrant's bow unraveled, causing his forearm to bruise. The cherry on top was when he got charged an extra $25 dollars for it. The string was already showing signs of wear, and he hardly put any tension on the bow as this happened while he was still in the process of slowly drawing back. The cashier told us he is the only one who used the bow (can you actually prove that?), but it was a full house and he got stuck choosing that compound bow because the others were being used by the party that started before us. We don't plan on ever coming back. This was a terrible experience. read more

I wish I didn't have to write this review but I had a bad experience yesterday at this place. I had very high hopes but I was very disappointed. I've been to numerous archery places far away so I was excited to go to one closer to home. Let me say that you have to take the introductory course even if you have experience, which makes sense since different places have different policies/equipment/setups. That's fine. But to schedule an hour class and have the instructor take so long to start and then cut the class short when he started late waiting for people is a waste of money to me. The instructional portion took 15 minutes so we were only allowed to actually shoot for less than 45 min because he told us we had to stop 5/6 min before the full hour was up. The worst part of this experience was the instructor whose name I believe was Lenny. I get that he was trying to help but his "help" was unwanted and he would come up behind us and just give us tips. That's his job, fine. But he would say it in a condescending way and his tips would make me shoot worse. I was doing well and he gave me one tip then I would do worse. Also, he made me feel uncomfortable as a female because he would touch the arms of some girls and I was genuinely afraid he would try to do that with me. It's COVID and I don't want any person, let alone a man giving me weird vibes, touching me. Overall I would not recommend this place but maybe if the instructor wasn't so bad I would have enjoyed it more. I always love to see more people being introduced to the joy of archery, so kudos to JCA for doing that. That being said... as one of the better barebow shooters in the area (and in the country, since so few of us do this sport :P), I came to take a beginner lesson because I was with a friend who'd never shot, and I found the instructor we had (forgot the name, it was not the owner) a little arrogant. I'll spare you the technical details, but I'll just say I shoot in the barebow discipline which uses techniques slightly different from other styles of shooting. So I'm doing this barebow thing when the instructor interjects: Instructor: You're doing it wrong. Me: I shoot barebow, this is how barebow shooters do it. Instructor: No, that's not the right way. Me: If you look at John Demmer who's the best barebow shooter in the country, that's how he does it too. Instructor: I know he's the top barebow shooter, but he's doing it wrong too. Me: ???!!! Really... it's quite unconvincing when you start to question the top shooter in the country... The rest of the lesson was uneventful. Based on this one incident I would say this range is fine for beginners, but I wouldn't go here for more advanced instruction. read more

Because archery is so badass, or at least Hollywood has brainwashed me into believing this, I was really excited to take Archery 101 at Jersey City Archery. I tried to sign up on my phone, but it appears that you cannot reserve a space in the class online if you have a discount, such as the Yelp deal which I used and appreciated; it's $20 for $30. The class was $35. There's also a Yelp check-in offer for $5 off. Anyway, I called to register instead. Nicole was our teacher, and she was pretty laid-back. But I think the larger class size hampered the instruction as there were probably 12-14 people in attendance. It might've been better if there were another teacher or an assistant. For example, Nicole had to help a girl more with her technique, so we had to wait for the kid to finish shooting all her arrows before we could retrieve ours. Or maybe have an intro class just for kids? The girl seemed like she was getting frustrated, and for one brief second, she had her arrow inadvertently pointed at my back, yikes. Another suggestion I have would be to add more ACs during the summer since it was a little toasty in there. Though I am a bit spoiled with AC. You get to take home your target sheet/bullseye as a souvenir. Super cool. Unfortunately I don't live close by, or I'd definitely be back, but I've already recommended Jersey City Archery to friends in Jersey City and Hoboken. Checking the website, they also have other options such as crossbow, blowgun, camps, and open shooting. Unique and fun experience! read more

My daughter recently moved to Jersey City and I visited her in early May 2019. I started archery when I was young but hadn't shot for many years until recently. My daughter and I were looking for things to do and I found JCA which was nearby. We had a wonderful time in the Archery 101 class. Kat was a great instructor, especially for my daughter as she had little experience except at Summer Camp. Kat was also great to talk to, knowlegable and interesting and we had a great time talking about archery history and evolution. My daughter will likely go back and maybe even take up archery as a sport/hobby. I will definitely return when I visit her. Thanks for being there and keep doing what you're doing, especially Kat!! What a great addition to Jersey City! I've been curious about archery for a while but most of the places that offer it are a little too far from me for it to be really worth the trip. As I was going through yelp, I happened upon this new archery place and was very excited! My boyfriend and I scheduled ourselves for an Archery 101 class the same week! We signed up for a Sunday class at 4:30. We were able to take advantage of the sweet deal on Yelp. We called ahead of time just to make sure there would be enough space for us to walk-in. There were barely any sign-ups for that particular time slot, so we didn't have a problem. However, if you're planning to go on a more typically busy day, I would definitely take advantage of their scheduling system on their website that will allow you to reserve a spot. This place is located in the Heights of Jersey city near Manhattan Ave in what seems to be an old brick factory. We didn't have trouble finding parking but I would expect it can be a little tricky at times, so allow time for that. There's a small sign on the building on top of the entrance. This is the only indicator of where this place is. As you travel up the stairs to the second floor, you come across a large room with a front desk and a receptionist. The room has about 14 or so lanes with targets at the end of each one. They have an assortment of bows that you can choose from when the time comes to start shooting. Our instructor was Chris and he was awesome! He honestly made the experience such a fun one for us. He was funny and cracked jokes but also took his time to make sure we all knew what we were doing and went over technique and safety very thoroughly. When some of us (me) were just not hitting the target, he took the time to review my form and help me make adjustments. The class ended up only having 5 of us which was pretty awesome because we got a lot of one on one time. The Archery 101 class is 1.5 hours long and you spend most of that time shooting. At the end, we were able to take our targets home. A really awesome hour and a half and totally worth the money. Overall, we had a blast and I would highly recommend this as a fun outing for anyone who is interested. Chris made our group feel so incredibly comfortable and I'm sure all the instructors will do the same for anyone who may be anxious. My boyfriend and I are looking forward to coming back for some more shooting time. Really happy this place exists! read more

It was fairly empty but I felt super safe COVID wise. Our instructor taught us how to properly shoot arrows and was very attentive to us during our time there. I'd recommend this place for everyone and anyone! I've gone a few times for archery and love the environment - happy, fun, chill vibes with the space, experience and staff. We've been helped by Chris who's taught me many pointers with not only shooting but maintaining my bow in tip top shape. They have a small shop inside so it's easy to grab any small items you need and even purchase bows. I'd highly recommend taking the intro class too. It's great for a date night or group of friends finding something unique to get into. Recently they've added axe throwing in the mix - it's the same entrance and connected to the archery area which was a nice casual time as well. As a former elementary school teacher, there are several elements that I feel a good teacher has no matter what content or what age they are teaching: -simple to follow directions -a sense of humor -small bite-size pieces of advice or corrections -noticing small improvements and praising you for them -getting to everybody in the room as often as possible Our 101 instructor John had all of these and more! It was a really fun class (where I actually could feel myself improving, albeit minimally) and we had A LOT of time to practice and shoot. This was an incredible experience. I definitely felt like I was Katnis except like her super incapable counterpart. The instructor Chris was really nice and taught us the basics in a quick 30 minute run-through and instantly let us start practicing. The bows were mainly compound bows,but you could ask to use other bows. In an hour and a half, my arms were definitely sore from holding up the bow. Where do I begin? I love archery. I may not be good at it, but i love the sport. What do I love more than archery? My hometown: Jersey City. I moved away from JC in 2004 and was devasted. Back to the review. When I heard that an archery range opened up in my hometown - I was ecstatic. So why the 5 stars? I normally shoot recurve bows, but I decided to try out the compound bow. Let me tell you - Chris over at JC Archery - changed my life. Hahah. Basically watched me and gave me tips. He helped me adjust my anchor and taught me an easier way to put the arrow on the bow. Lastly, Chris was always there to encourage you even when you know you were not on fire with your skillset. I enjoyed my first time and certainly won't be my last. Great atmosphere. Big on Safety.
