They helped me pick the best release for my fit, arrows to suit my hunting goals and a sweet bag to hold everything! They customized the bow to fit me perfectly and let me shoot my new arrows to see how everything felt. They gave encouragement and guidance, while tweaking my bow as they saw it in action. First of all, I asked to purchase a dozen each inserts for two different arrows that I provided him. While that tech was looking for the inserts I asked the other tech if he could lower the draw weight on my wifes bow. I said it was at 50# He's telling me it's already at 30#. Sooo...I turn back to the other tech, who has now already installed an insert on my brand new, uncut arrow. I repeated that I only wanted to purchase inserts not have one installed on my arrow. Meanwhile, the other guy who took the bow to the scale to test draw weight (I imagine to try and prove me wrong) says the weight is at 54#. Just like I had told him initially! They refused to drop the weight claiming they couldn't because of the limb bolts stating "It's a PSE thing". Then I'm handed a bag of inserts, which I was way overcharged for. Upon hearing my complaint, I was told that I should be grateful for not being charged for checking the draw weight. Something I never asked for! Fuming all the way home, I discovered that the inserts weren't even the right size! They lost this customer forever. One star for the nice lady up front. read more

I've heard some bad things about Targeteers - that they overcharge for equipment and their customer service sucks. I just moved from the Jersey shore to Harrison new jersey. Even the range is down south have heard of Targeteers bad reputation. Aside from the things that I've heard, I've called and asked for archery range prices and they charge $25 an hour which is ridiculously high. I would never pay $25 an hour! The bullet hole Annex in Belleville charges $15 an hour and they allow you to shoot for a half hour for $10. read more

Thee best bow shop in the area by far. Rob and his staff are knowledgeable in hunting and target applications. I've gotten nothing but grade A service. The indoor range is perfect for getting dialed in. I have 3 set of customs strings for my bows two of which I've purchased from them and they are unique and top quality. If you want a no bull quality bow shop this place is it. Also I just did my first adult shoot and that was an amazing learning experience. Highly highly recommend. Here is my story on Targeteers. About 10 or 12 years ago my Son wanted to try archery, after some research we ended up a Targeteers and walked out with 2 bows. The staff was friendly, patient and extremely knowledgeable. We spent a few years going there constantly to use the range and always had a great time. After a while my Son was growing up and things came up so we stopped going. Fast forward he is now 19 and I also have a 9 year old daughter. My Son decided that he missed doing archery with me and wanted to buy his own bow to get back into it. After he saved some money we went back to Targeteers. This time with the entire family in tow. Very refreshing to see some old faces and some new ones too. As was the case last time they were very patient, especially with the 50 questions from my 9 year old. In the end my Son purchased his new bow, my daughter got one too, I upgraded mine and they were even able to resize my Sons old bow for my wife. Now we have a hobby that we can all enjoy together. In these times of big box stores where customer service takes a back seat to speed, it's great to still be able to go to a great family run business that takes their time with you. read more

Dear Yelp Readers, With the Christmas shopping season just around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to share my Targeteers story. It's a long story so I am going to use terse sentences. I bought a Hoyt bow at Targeteers in December of 2020. With every bow purchase, Targeteers gives a 'one year free service' card. My service card was soon to expire so on a Saturday in December of 2021. I brought my Hoyt bow in for a once-over. While I was there I decided to purchase a Mathews V3X 33" bow along with an 'Axcel' sight, and a Hamskea rest. After the components were put on the bow and the bow was "set-up", I took 15-20 shots with it in the range behind the counter wall. I then gave the cashier my debt card to purchase the bow. My card was declined. It was now 5:25pm and the shop was set to close at 6:00pm. I called Bank of America and sat on hold for approximately 20 min (if memory serves, it was the Saturday before Christmas). After 20 minutes, a representative took my call. I put her on speaker phone and told her the situation. She told me that my purchase had been approved and that the issue was on the retailers end. Rob then said, "The problem isn't on my end. I do thousands transactions on that machine every year." I asked the representative to put me through to whichever department would be able to cancel the transaction so I could run the card again. The representative put me back on hold and after a short wait I was disconnected. It was now nearly 6:00 pm. I told Rob that I would have to come back once the issue had been resolved. He then said, "I'm keeping your Hoyt as collateral." I asked him if he was serious. He said, "Yea, I'm serious. This is a business. I can't sell that bow now, it's used." I then walked to my bow case (with the Hoyt in it) to put my arrows back in the case. Rob then came from around the counter and VERY aggressively grabbed my case off of the floor while I was putting my arrows inside. He then ran off with it and said, "It will be in my office when you come back and buy the Mathews." If I had refused to let him take MY PROPERTY the situation seemed like it could have very well turned physical. As a public school teacher of 20+ years, I would have immediately lost my job for "conduct unbecoming" (contractual clause). I made the decision to not call the police and let the situation resolve without further escalation. I called BoA that Monday and they assured me that the issue had been on the end of Targeteers and it would take 3-5 business days for the money to be kicked back into my account. I called Rob that day to speak to him regarding what my bank had told me and he lectured me about how I "should change banks because your bank is denying you your right to access your money."--Yes actually said all of this. After the money was returned to my account I went to Targeteers and purchased the bow. A short time later I wrote a paper letter to Hoyt, Mathews, Axcel, and Hamskea letting them know them know what had happened and the type of person they have representing them. They each wrote me an apology saying they would speak to Rob. Hoyt, Hamskea, and Axcel wrote me via email. Mathews wrote me via paper letter. I have a screen shot of each of their apology letters. Targeteers sells a massive amount of product for these companies and as we all know, $$ talks, so I doubt much came of it. But you've been warned. Don't go to Targeteers. The audacity for a business owner to strong arm a customer and take their property is absolutely unforgivable. I spoke to an acquaintance who is a lawyer and he told me that Rob was absolutely in the wrong for taking MY PROPERTY as collateral for a future purchase. I also contacted a few shops in NJ and a few in PA. The NJ dealers said there isn't any law that says that if a bow is shot by a customer it is then "used". One shop told me that they keep a floor models on hand for customers to test bows and that they then sell those bow for a discount when the new line of bows comes out. Don't be pressured into buying a bow before you test it. **EDIT** TO MAKE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR. 1) I HAD EVERY INTENTION OF BUYING THE BOW WHEN I GAVE THEM MY CARD. 2) I HAD EVER INTENTION OF RETURNING AFTER MY CARD WAS DECLINED. If you want to be treated well while bow shopping I strongly suggest going to 'The Heritage Guild' in Branchburg, NJ. 'Garden State Bow & Reel' in North Stockholm, NJ. Came here to try hitting a few targets with a compact bow through a 1hr lesson with my buddy. The 1 hr for both of us cost around $60. The range is decorated with a lot of animals. Like it could be Ron Swanson's cabin, The trainer was very knowledgeable and nice. We made the best of it with our lack of skill we did quite well. I'd come back and try the regular bow and maybe one day purchase my own bow. read more

I'm baffled by the negative reviews. This shop has been nothing but professional, courteous, and patient while selling me equipment or while servicing my bow. The place is quite a cool facility, as well. They sell anything you could possibly need related to the sport. Prices are fair and knowledge is unmatched. My father and uncle also insist on only going to Targeteers for anything bow-related. This past summer they did a repair for me in no-time after I had a failure on my bow. I'm giving them 5 stars to offset the ridiculous 1 star reviews. In reality 4 is accurate. Things to remember: They've been around since 1957 which proves they have to know what they're doing. For those complaining about attitudes. These people are not used car salesman. They know the sport and genuinely want you as a returning customer. They don't lay out a bed of roses for you, they talk archery like someone who is serious about the sport. Take notice on most of the complaints, they start out with looking to get something for nothing. The prices are what they are because you get excellent service and more importantly they only do archery. It's not Walmart where they make money back on gum and hairspray. The prices are a little higher but thats all they do (but don't forget the setup which no one else offers). Good luck buying a bow from Dicks for $50 less and then setting it up yourself. It's a decent family run business by people who know the sport and would like nothing more than you giving them a shto prove themselves. read more

Although the staff is very well educated in their field, they are very lazy with helping their customers. They push to sell and that's it. They don't offer you options or products similar to what you're interested in. The older blonde woman working the store is so quick to take your money without hesitation. We used to come here to buy archery stuff for my husband before we found some closer places in the city. They have a huge collection of bows available in the store and all other accessories too. We had a chance of using the free hour shooting as well and we loved the experience. I went in with some questions about bows, hoping to buy one, and was directed to talk to some bow expert. He answered some questions, but he just treated me very coldly, like I was a waste of his time. When I asked to take a look at a bow he said "Not unless you're gonna buy" which was just rude. I ended up just buying a bow online instead. I'd really like to support brick and mortar stores but I'm not driving 30 minutes to get treated like garbage. I walked into Targeteers with the intention of trying out some bows and possibly ordering one. The range that I usually shoot at in NYC always pressures me to buy a bow, saying that I won't enjoy the sport unless I get one. However, they never give me much guidance as far as model, and laugh at me when I ask what fun colors the bows come in. The fellows at Targeteers gave me a ton of advice, and were super patient with my plethora of n00b questions. They wanted to make sure I picked one that I loved for function, feel, and style :) What really impressed me was that when I told them I was unsure of which kind to get, they encouraged me to hold off on buying one, and instead take a few lessons to learn what I like and need. This was so culturally different than what I'm used to at my usual range. I took a private 30-minute lesson right then with John. John inspired me to try out a recurve as well as compound (which I usually shoot). He was very patient with all of my questions, and really guided my form. Some of the other instructors, who were coaching some Girl Scouts, chimed in with pointers as well. The range itself is nicely lit (not too bright) and has flexible-distance targets. The shooting line did not feel crowded, even with a room full of children. I felt very safe and relaxed there. As a woman entering this sport just recently, I felt fully welcomed by the entire staff of Targeteers, and am looking forward to continued lessons, making friends, and soon, buying my own recurve bow from them. read more

I stopped here to check out a crossbow I was interested in buying after finding out it was in stock. I'm new to archery - just building up my poundage and improving form/accuracy - and figured I would like to try crossbow hunting this season until I'm better able to hunt with a compound next year. I went here to be able to handle the bow and see if it was too heavy/cumbersome. Everyone told me this was the place to go and I wanted so much to like this place as it's not far from home and has a range... and nope, unfortunately not. Walked downstairs to the empty store with two people behind the counter, talking with one gentleman standing there. Looked around, waited, looked some more, waited...then finally approached one of them to ask to see the bow. In our short, awkward encounter, they made it clear that they 1) didn't appreciate crossbow hunters, 2) didn't care for new women crossbow hunters, 3) didn't really care if I came back or not. Meh. Oh, did I mention that the salesperson WAS a woman? C'mon - have some professionalism. Not everyone is a compound purist, not everyone grew up hunting in the stand with their dad, and likely no one appreciates elitism from a cashier who sells the same product they're bashing. Targeteers was listed as an approved service center for Tenpoint crossbows so i went for service on my bow. Great attention and expert advice. i ended up buying new bow (you never have enough toys) and the guys there could not have been better. they set my new bow up, took me through all the functions, had me shoot it and i could not be happier. I bought my first bow from them. Roughly 3-4 seasons ago. A Quest Forge, adjustable for everything. A really nice little set up. When I was first looking, I went in there and the sales staff completely blew me off. So, rather than rant on the web, I called the shop and spoke with Rob, the owner. I told him what happened and he invited me back and personally sold me the bow. I was pretty happy and purchased some stuff from them here and there. Once I shot my first deer (last year) I bought myself a new bow. Saved hard and tried everything I could. I settled on an Xpedition. Nice little rig that I love to this day. I don't know if they took it personally at Targeteers that I didn't purchase the bow from them (they don't carry the line) or what but it's been a touch chillier in the place since. I've been back a few times to shoot on the range and what not. Bought a few small items. Whatever. I'm currently looking for a recurve. I am currently caring for a bow that was loaned to me via Jay, thru Rusty, that I like but won't be keeping. However I needed arrows and such. I popped over to Targeteers last Friday evening and spent some loot on arrows and such from them. The arrows were horribly over priced however I figured that with the money spent comes service. Hah. The arrows are overspined. I checked with someone that knows a good bit of what he's talking about and on the Beman website. Additionally, they were shooting a bit wonky (and left). I called and asked to speak to Rob. He did not take the call. I spoke to his daughter and although nice, she wasn't the point of sale for me so he also couldn't help (sweet kid tho). Instead Bill called me back and explained his take on the situation. They flat out refused to give me new arrows as they were cut and didn't care that it was their advice that I followed and it was flat wrong. I asked if they had heavier field points to hopefully soften the spine a bit and was told that they do. Now realize, they know I am not happy and am trying to fix a problem that they created. They charged me for the field points. Targeteers will never get a dime from me again. I tried to give them a chance. I really did. But to actually charge me for the points is just beyond reasonable. Especially given that they are as expensive as they are for arrows. The same arrows, online, are about $50. I paid them $85. So, to repeat, TARGETEERS WILL NEVER GET A DIME FROM ME AGAIN. read more

Came into Targeteers to purchase recurve bows for my son and me. We previously only had experience using cheap bows from big box stores and wanted to get more involved in the sport. We had a great experience working with Tasha! She was so patient with our questions and walked us through the entire process, from establishing the draw weights of the bows to ensuring we were properly fitted for arrows. She presented us with multiple options for accessories like bags, etc and even gave us some tips as we shot with our new bows. I set up a 1 hour lesson for my fiancé and I. Our instructor was Tasha and she was WONDERFUL! Neither of us have ever done archery before and Tasha was so patient and willing to explain everything to us. She was very soft spoken and calming, didn't make us feel nervous or uncomfortable at all. She even let us try two different types of bows and explained the difference between the two. I don't understand the 1-star reviews, honestly. I have purchased equipment for my entire family through several different visits and the owner, Rob, is genuine and honest. He did not oversell us on equipment but let me consider, compare, and gave me the story about which was best value-for-money. We had just gone to a different range and my younger son was so frustrated by his experience that he was nearly in tears. He had been having such a hard time compared to his previous times shooting (rental equipment). We had always intended to get him his own bow, but we decided to get it that day so he would understand that it wasn't him but the equipment mismatch. After getting a kit tuned to him, he was shooting tight groups almost immediately. The store is a family owned business and every one of our visits has been an extremely positive experience. They have spent several hours with EACH of us getting everything perfectly adjusted. Maybe they aren't the lowest cost place (I didn't compare) but the level of service and attention has been really amazing. read more

I am an experienced target archer and brought an old Martin professional target recurve to Targeteers for a much-needed set-up. The bow had not been used in many years, but had been very expensive long ago and it was in perfect condition. So, I was prepared to spend perhaps hundreds of dollars in labor to have it restrung and properly set up, with additional purchase of a new set of target arrows. I respect high-quality labor and materials and I do not fuss about the cost if the assurance is there. Upon arriving at the store, I could not at first find anyone on the sales floor. I had noticed a woman near the back of the store when I first walked in, but she had vanished by the time I got down to the sales floor. Finally, a young man showed up behind the counter. He was very young and did not seem to want to talk with anyone (he didn't say hello, but rather just stared at me for a while). I told him that I was interested in extensive set-up services and a set of arrows; he appeared to not understand what I was asking. There were objects strewn about on the bench and I asked if I could set up my things somewhere. Again, no response. So, with no other place to set it, I placed my bow case on the floor and removed the parts of my bow. I asked for assistance with tools or whether or not they could just take the parts and assemble them as part of the labor cost of the set-up. Again, no response; he simply wondered off. I just packed up my belongings and decided to at least see what sort of shop it was. The woman eventually came out of the back room, but by then I was absolutely convinced this place was bonkers. She confirmed my suspicions when I went up to pay for a small item I decided to purchase (a shooting tab). It took her a very long time and I felt like I was going through the security cordon at an airport. I grew up in Michigan where high-quality archery shops, ranges, and services abound. When I lived in CT, I went to Hall's Arrow in Manchester and it was--and still is--superb, from hunting and plinking basics to championship target archery, all with a warm and helpful style. The people running Targeteers would get an education by visiting Hall's Arrow. I shoot traditional recurve and longbow exclusively, which in MI and New England is very common, even welcome. I just don't get New Jersey. I came to Targeteers because there are so few places that sell wood arrows here in Jersey. The guys at Strictly Archery were better, but still, I felt like I was encroaching on some kind of inner private space and that I would have to prove myself in some way before they would respect me as a customer. Even though I already know a great deal about what I want and need, they just kept telling me that's not what I want or need. I got the same vibe from Targeteers. Trust me, if you're from MI, you already know what I'm talking about. People where I'm from would just walk out the door, which is what I did. Enough. I'll just do my own draw and spine and take my chances ordering from Three Rivers. I don't like ordering arrows online, but I won't drop $100.00 at a place like this. read more

During this COVID-19 Epidemic I made an appointment and brought in a used bowtech to get fully set up, rob and the staff went over the bow fully making sure cam timing was right, tuning on the rest and even making sure to get the right screws. While looking for some entertainment on our anniversary weekend, fishing expedition didn't pan out so we decided to check Archery off my "to do" list. Googled it & found Targeteers had a range. Walked in & were pleasantly surprised by the store, its set up/decor. The staff (young lady) is so nice & after a few ?'s about amateur shooting, we met Joe. Joe gave us an hr. lesson & really schooled us on the sport/craft along with great stories of his own. We had such a good time w/the bow & arrow & most of all Joe. Although I am not a hunter, the game (animals) the owners have displayed is amazing. I love the pictures and the hidden gem so close to home. The practice/lesson offers/price are so reasonable & they have such an array of equipment/items for purchase. We were not pressured to buy anything & were given Magazines by the young lady so we can browse before we buy. read more

Went to Targeteers with a friend who is a regular there. Upon entering I watched the owner Robert treating a customer with children in a very rude way. After he greeted my friend nicely and took care of her purchase he then turned to me. He barely made eye contact and turned me down to practice because I lacked the equipment necessary. I understood. He turned away and didn't even offer to show me any. I had come to the store hoping to be further introduced into the sport and possibly buy a bow. I had already visited a Dicks Sporting Goods and Cabelas but figured I'd check out an actual archery store before making a purchase. I almost felt he had treated me and the customer with children rudely because we had a common ethnicity. I sincerely hoped not and let it roll off my back. I watched my friends for an hour of target practice which was interesting and then took a look around the store. After looking at all bows which were overpriced I asked Robert to measure my draw. He refused unless I paid a $25 fee which he said would be "refunded" once l bought one of his $700 bows. He told me that he had "employees to pay and utilities such as lights to take care of" and he couldn't just "measure customers for free"..... Are you kidding me? If you cannot even measure a customer's arm looking to make a large purchase how do you expect to gain any loyalty or make a sale? You don't buy a $700 dress without trying it on do you? I went back to Dicks Sporting Goods where they were extremely nice and did it for free. Not to mention one can just watch how to do it on YouTube with a standard measuring tape. Overall I don't recommend this place or the rude staff. People most likely use this range because of its location. Poor service, rude and overpriced. He might have made an extra $700 sad today if he cracked a smile... read more

The owner (old guy bossing everyone around) is an asshole. I brought 2 new basic bows ($120 & $160) that I've bought on Amazon (because it was much cheaper than in that store) to setup and the owner has told me: if you have bought the bows from us, it would be free, now it is flat fee $75 per bow in addition to whatever accesories you buy and there's absolutely no alternatives - I have a $400 machine and it doesn't come cheap. I did not mind buying accessories from him and I did not mind paying for their time, but paying 50% of the bow price for 10 minutes of technitian's work is rediculous. Been there a couple of times now to pick up some accessories for my two bows. Granted, I didnt purchase the bows from there, but I wasnt purchasing an inconsequential amount either. Now, I always try to support the local shops. There prices will always be higher than the internet. Targeteers has had a good reputation over the years so I went. My last visit is what has me really kind of ticked off. I have a 06 Hoyt Trykon that I wanted to have custom strings made up for. Targeteers is well known for doing an excellent job of this. I went on a Thursday evening after work to drop off the bow to get re-strung. I knew it wasn't going to take a day, and I was willing to leave it with the shop for about a week. The young lady behind the counter (Cait?) told me that Rob does all custom string work, but was away on vacation. I was told to come back in a couple of weeks. The next day, I forgot that I had to pick up something else, a riser mount quiver....I got to the store in the morning on a Friday...a handful of customers...still had to wait over 15 minutes just to ASK to see a product. Now someone DID attempt to ask me what I needed...but the only people with the knowledge to actually HELP me were too busy to even look up. To top it all off, when I was paying for my purchase, Rob walks in and starts shooting the sh*t with his other customers....doing small adjustments and what not.... I'm thinking...wait...I thought he was on vacation.... Turns out, he really wasn't. On their own Facebook page, over the course of the next week, there were several pictures of Rob at work, at special events there, and other things...he actually WAS at work. Now, if you were just jammed up...tell the customer that. No need to lie about it...Their customer service is actually quite crap....But when you're the only game in town, I guess you can get away with that. I am extremely dissatisfied with the quality of customer service at this shop. I am new to archery and received my first bow as a Christmas gift. I was very excited to go to Targetters for bow adjustments and to sign up for lessons. Upon talking to an older gentlemen behind the counter I began to feel they did not take my business seriously because I did not purchase the bow there. In fact that is an understatement, they were extremely condescending and rude. In addition, their advice was confusing and made conflicting points. I was interested in purchasing accessories, adjustment services, and lessons but left feeling beyond disappointed. read more
