Looked as if it was just heated in the microwave as you can see in the picture. But tasted ok. Guac was good. Main dishes were tasteless however. I had a carne asada which looked great until tasting it. I also ordered it medium and it was damn near rare. Super raw and red in the middle. I will try somewhere else next time in town. I've eaten at JL for nearly 20 years. This review is a combined total review over that time. The food is always excellent. Always. Their quesadillas used to be amazing with mushrooms and steak, etc. but, even after they changed them, they are still excellent. That said, service has always been poor. Slow and inattentive, don't expect to be catered to very heavily when you go. If you want good food and don't care about good service, it may rank higher. If not, you won't be happy. That said, as a long-time diner growing up one town over, I know what to expect so it's never disappointing or a shock and the food is always great. read more

I have had multiple bad experiences but tonight was by far the worse. it took almost an hour to even get our appetizer after ordering, and even longer to get our meals. when the food came, my friends chicken was raw in her chicken bacon ranch sandwich. they did kindly removed it from our bill and our waitress was very kind, attentive and accommodating. All of us left left with upset stomaches despite eating entirely different meals. For the price of the food, the quality is horrendous. it's a nice place for just a drink but I'll never eat there again. read more

Wow! This place was on top of their game today! Had the 3- Fajitas for two of us and everything was on point! Also had wings, these were fresh, hot and tasty! The salsa had a little kick! The waitress was quick and very sweet. She sat us down quickly. This place was very clean, organized, tasty and the service was perfect! Stopped in a couple years ago while exploring downtown Hico. Has become a must stop now anytime we are passing through! The chicken flautas are the best anywhere I have had. Chicken is shredded, and has rich chicken flavor vs the chopped bland mush that is in many other texmex places. Yum! read more

Don't. Eat. Here!!! My husband and I decided we would come back here and eat since the Iredell Cafe was closed this evening. We had eaten here over 4 years ago and thought what we ordered was tasty, sadly, we can't say that this evening. We both ordered the crispy beef tacos with rice and refried beans. The meal is just not up the standards of where we normally eat crispy beef tacos in Waco. The beef is pretty greasy, the rice and beans came out cold. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful though but that doesn't help the quality of food. read more

We were pleasantly surprised with our visit tonight. Last time we were here it was over a year ago because we weren't that impressed. However, we had zero complaints. We had chicken flautas, chicken quesadillas, charo beans, combination fajitas margaritas, and Sopapillas everyone said they would order it again so that's a home run in my book! Presentation was also nice, sorry we forgot to take any pictures. Staff was attentive and got the orders right and kept up with any needs we had. Give them a try. Traveling on our way to Fredericksburg we hit up this Mexican cafe on the corner of Hico downtown core. The staff were nice and let us sit anywhere we liked. The chips and salsa were a welcomed change as they were dusted with sw seasoning that paired well with tomato salsa. Cheese enchilada with chili con carne special were filling with rice and beans were well received. I had brisket tacos with flour tortillas, rice, and ranchero beans. I liked the rice the most but the beans were too watery imo. The brisket was a bit oily but were just average for me. I'd like to try their other traditional offerings like shredded chicken and seasoned beef. The very nice server and refills and specials pricing were a nice touch that confirmed we chose the right place for lunch. read more

A little pricey for what you get and if you go in expecting Mexican it is not what you get. I don't even know if I would call the tacos Texmex. The food did taste good. They had the fans on high and both myself and my husband were so cold we could not wait to leave. The service is really slow and when we got there the place was not that busy. By the time we left the place was full. They did not seem to have enough help for how busy they were. Not a lot of choices in Hico and everything just seemed to run at their own pace. Pretty good food but if you plan on getting a fajita chicken salad you're way better off ordering one to go. it's much bigger than if you order in the restaurant. The one they'll give you if you go there to eat is hardly bigger than a house salad that you'd eat before your meal. For $15 I'd expect more. Alcoholic drinks are pretty high too. $8 for a mimosa seems kinda rich. read more

From the time we walked in, we were impressed by this place. The dining area has been updated and is very attractive. We ordered the catfish special. I feel like this is 4.5 kind of place. Everyone at our table was happy with the food. I had the brisket taco which were a solid choice with its flavors. My wife was extremely happy with her carne asada and loved the guacamole. My daughter got the chicken fried steak. We all tried each others food and were really with everyone's food. The salsa had a nice Smokey flavor and overall the queso was solid. Our only real complaint was the queso was a bit runny but the flavor outweighed that. So there aren't a lot of places to eat in Hico and when this hometown restaurant has to accommodate both locals and travelers, all hell breaks loose. "Take your seat at any (dirty) table...servers don't know who you belong to so no table wipe off, no menus, no drinks, not even chips and salsa for an unreasonable amount of time. I hate bad reviews, but at 1:30 on a Saturday, this restaurant was dirty, service was slow, and the food was mediocre at best. We also visited the unimpressive Billy the Kids Museum. I am thinking we will skip Hico altogether in the future. read more
