Food was really authentic and excellent. Stromboli and Calzone were huge and tasty. The rest of the group had meatballs, Spagetti, lasagne, and pasta which were all great. This is a wonderful restaurant hidden away in Hico, Tx. The inside of the restaurant needs many upgrades, but the food was amazing. We arrived 30 minutes before closing and the restaurant was busy and slightly understaffed. Our server did a great job of keeping up with the rush. It was June 5, but I cant remember her name. My eggplant parmigiana was home made perfect. This is a no-frills, old style café with genuine Italian heritage somewhere. In a growing town where you can easily spend $50 for a good meal at one of the two or three really fancy-schnancie places in town, it's nice to know you can get your gourmet in with a $9.95 dish as good as anywhere in Italy! The bread is right out of the oven and light as a feather - although nobody offered butter or olive oil and garlic with it. The salad was plenty big, very fresh, if a little unimaginative. The atmosphere is small town typical with taxi yellow walls and painting prints from a Motel 6 garage sale, but clean as a pin and pleasant. Oh, and the waitress could be Miss Texas. First time to visit and will be the last visit. Ordered the antipasta salad. Lettuce with rolled up cheese and ham and black canned sliced olives. It was a boring sale to say the least.... No peppers, but that was the entire salad. They could do way better as it was a regular salad with olives and a roll up. The other dish was the chicken piccata. I love this dish but here it had no flavor and it was served on Penne pasta.... Who does that? Sauce would have been amazing g if it had actual LEMON in it. And a few mushrooms to give it that umami flavor. It needed garlic and fresh parm and butter and served with vermacelli. We didn't finish this dish because it lacked FLAVOR big time. It was Sunday a week ago and I was driving thru town during the lunch hour and I decided to stop here and eat. Upon walking in, I noticed that this is a simple restaurant that consists of just a medium size dining room that was mostly filled with people. After looking at the menu, I chose the spaghetti your way which let me pick meat sauce for $6.95 and adding mushrooms for another dollar. During lunch the meal comes with a salad and garlic bread. First to come out were the salad and bread. It was a good salad and adequate in size. While I was only given one piece of garlic bread, it was good too. About 10 minutes the entree arrived. I thought it was a decent looking bowl of pasta with a nice tasting marinara sauce. For the cost and amount of food given it represented excellent value. Also my table service was good. Afterwards, I visited the restroom accessed thru the kitchen and found it to be in order. I like this Italian restaurant and would be happy to return. Others in our party ordered Spaghetti with meat sauce and chicken Parmesan and were both good and would get again. The pasta with broccoli and chicken was ok, would not get again. I selected the cannoli vs manicotti because it has meat. It was very tasty but I never found meat in it and inquired if maybe they brought manicotti by mistake. They said since it had spinach that it was cannoli and they don't stuff with a lot of meat- but I did not find any meat. Flavor was great but I only ordered because of the meat aspect vs all cheese. I would really like the dish if it had some meat, wasn't expecting it to be solely meat inside, just some. They never brought bread out, asked when they delivered the meal and they said they ordered it. Nothing came, they never mentioned anything again. Pizza was pretty good. We will return but it's just a learning curve of what to order. read more

Customer service was HORRIBLE. The waitress, hispanic lady, was rude. The moment we came in til we left, she never made us feel welcome. I asked for straws and she threw them on the table. Then when she brought out pizza she rudely asked for us to move things on the table so she could place it down. We never got asked if we needed more drinks and when we finally were ask if we needed anything, she was sweeping with her back towards us. Fortunately the food was good. The building doesn't look like much on the outside, but don't be hesitant. The food and service are excellent! We stopped in during a meandering day trip. It was one of the few places open on a Monday afternoon and was empty. (It appears the locals were using the drive through option.) The waitress brought generous sized sodas immediately, followed by a salad for hubby, rolls and their signature home made bread. All were delicious. H had lasagna and I had a 10 inch pizza. This Casual Italian Restaurant is a real gem for Hico. The service is excellent, the prices are beyond reasonable, and the food is delicious. We saw a group eating Stromboli in the city park and decided that we had to have some ourselves. There was no wait for a table at noon, and our drinks were served quickly. We passed through the cute little town of Hico, TX on our way home to Dallas from a baseball tournament and couldn't resist trying this place. It was DELICIOUS. If I could give this restaurant no star, I would! This was by far the worse customer service ever! Ever! We are on our way to celebrate with family in Plainview. As we all start to get hungry, we stopped at Giovanni's. We are all hungry, a party of 15! I would of thought the staff or owner would be welcoming after seeing how many we were, well that was not the case. As we walk in, we approach two separate tables the lady walked over and said "get up! Please" with a firm and unpleasant tone; that was red flag number one. Then as they put the tables together she's slamming the the chairs as she's placing them where they belong. A chair was left at the end of the table and I figured I could sit there and grabbed the chair and she then says "can I have that chair, it doesn't go there" again that unpleasant tone...red flag number two! (Well excuse me!)... it doesn't stop there, we ask to have separate checks for each family, she rolled her eyes and said "ooookay" like we were a bother to serve. Red flag number 3!! We sat there a bit and looked at each other. They only had two other couples eating there and they also were looking around with a face of confusion. We've never encountered such poor customer service that made us so uncomfortable as well as upset! We were hungry but not to put up with that ladies BS! We went over and had lunch at Koffee Kuo Family Restaurant so far so good, they are VERY NICE & WELCOMING! read more

Hubby and I stopped by one day to have dinner while in town seeing family and now every time my sister comes to my neck of the woods I have her bring me something from there. I have yet to be disappointed. The portions are very generous, I can never eat all my chicken piccata in one sitting, and the rolls are so wonderful. I've waited a bit to post this review since our (awful) meal. I wanted to be fair rather than reactionary. At the time of this writing, there are 4 reviews for Giovanni's: two 4-star and two 5-star reviews. Fellow Yelpers, our meals were nowhere near being outstanding, delicious, or anything gem-like. It might be the very best Italian food in Hico, or even in Hamilton County. But it isn't good. It is so almost-bad that we won't go back. There are positive attributes that deserve mention, however. The service was friendly - one server for the tiny dining room, but she was more than capable to handle the few tables. The food was delivered quickly - not hot, but it was fast. Meals came with small side salads - iceberg lettuce, but fresh and crisp. In contrast, the bread basket raved about in other reviews was blah spongy white bread rolls. Nothing special. The pasta dinners we ordered were beyond terrible. The pasta was overcooked and the sauce tasted bottled. We pushed it around on our plates and decided the log drive home hungry was better than risking a long car drive feeling queasy. I discussed my remarks with my driving partner a long time before posting the review because I didn't want to compare Giovanni's to much better big-city Italian restaurants of Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, etc. That isn't a fair comparison. This is small town Texas. If you live here or nearby, then you know exactly what you are getting. But if you are driving through and looking for a bite to eat before getting on 281 or taking 220 to catch 67, be aware that the pastas are awful. The food is largely disappointing. If it is the only thing open and you are starved - you can handle it. But if you've got any strength left, stay on the road and look for better options. Two stars because, after all, they are doing OK for a small town. If they'd been in a city of any size I'd have given one star at most. We had high hopes, but...just awful. read more
