We had a family birthday dinner at the Chop House in Hico. The food was great from appetizers to meal to desert. Service was excellent. Our party had beef, fish and lamb entrees. This place is amazing!! DON'T miss this diamond in a small town. Husband and wife own the hotel and restaurant. Beautiful restored stone and wood buildings. They make, smoke, blend, create everything served. Right down to the bitters in their cocktails. Absolutely sincere and friendly staff/waitress. And the food!! Home cooked and delicious! I overheard a gentlemen telling the owner he had his favorite, the smoked meatloaf, so I couldn't pass it up. And he was not wrong. Best meatloaf I've ever had. Smoked and grilled, could not stop eating. Mashed potatoes were awesome and the mushroom gravy was just as good. Appetizer of the queso dip was ok but what made it good was the chopped brisket inside it. Yum. The french fries are hand cut and fresh. So dang addicting and I could stop stealing them from my son. My friend and I stopped while on a road trip. We had looked online at the menu and it said the Lunch and Brunch menus were available on Sundays. That was not the case, only the brunch menu was presented. We asked and the waitress began listing items available and we asked if she could bring lunch menu. She did, but said not everything was available. My friend got a burger. I had the chop house salad with chicken ($12 additional). The salad listed house-cured molasses bacon, but no bacon was on the salad. There are not many healthy options along HWY 281, but I don't think we would go back because it was too expensive for what we did get. Service from the new waitress-in-training was excellent. 1800's building and hotel. Restaurant is part of the hotel. Old beautiful building. Has full bar and some TVs in bar side area. Service friendly and informative on dishes. For this part of Texas it felt upscale and foodie. Which is a major plus for this area. The chefs definitely are shooting for high standards. My fried chicken was so hot and fresh I could tell it was cooked to order. Crispy and delicious. The mash potatoes were on point and made from scratch. The gravy was solid. The over all dish was pushing the salty side of things. I believe they brine the chicken which contains salt, the batter and sauce contain salt I believe. The gravy was on the salted side and the collard greens were way over the top seasoned with a pepper vinegar base. Which I like a little of that on my greens. Over all balance could be improved by letting the green be the neutral element of the dish. Also I'm not a fan of brining chicken, I believe it changes the texture. Over all I loved it....a lot. My wife's meat loaf was solid and filling. Nice portion. All served piping hot. I really enjoyed the spirit of the menu and the obvious care given to the preparation of the food. This is located in the Midland Hotel in downtown Hico, TX. If someone had told me of a fine dining establishment in Hico, I would have thought they were joking, but this is it. It was lunch so I just had a hamburger, but it was cooked perfectly and came with fresh cut fries. My wife had their brioche french toast, which she said was very good. A block or two off the main highway through downtown, and certainly worth the stop. read more

My wife had the filet chicken fried, it was one of the toughest meats and veins throughout. We switched plates because she couldn't chew it. This restaurant is on the corner of the street inside a hotel in downtown Hico. The area is charming with lots of small shops and a fun Hico sign you can pose with in the center. The restaurant is rustic and peppered with Texas decor that is not overdone. They have a full bar as well if you are in the mood for libations. My fiancé got the ribs which came with an apple, cabbage, blue cheese coke slaw. I got the House Chop Salad that came with Apple, white raisins, avocado and a strip of thick bacon all on a bed of ice berg lettuce and tossed with a blue cheese vinaigrette. The blue cheese flavor was mild in the salad but sharper in the coke slaw. I tried the pimiento croquettes which come in a small pot of creamed kale. The ribs were a little dry and the creamed kale a bit too salty but overall we really enjoyed the meal. The croquettes were especially tasty. The staff were all incredibly friendly. We were seated right away when we arrived around 1 pm on a Saturday. This was a welcome stop in the middle of our road trip. read more

We stopped for lunch in this historic building after a date day in Hico and truly enjoyed ourselves. The ambience is appropriately historical and nostalgic, our waiter attentive without hovering, and the food is fantastic! My husband had the chicken fried beef tenderloin which he said was tender and without a hint of gristle, and I had the fried green tomato BLT with housemade chips. My sandwich was delicious with very flavorful bacon, aioli, and luscious fried green tomatoes, and those chips! I could eat those thin, crispy delights all day long. I also had an 1896 Martini which is fabulous with hints of orange, lemon, and sage. My oh my, so glad I tried that. We will be back to try more delicious offerings on their menu. We traveled to Hico today to walk around and have a nice day with friends & we stumbled on The Chop House. Walking in at 2pm we were presented with the lunch menu and even though it all sounded pretty good there was no steak offerings on it. We asked if they had a dinner menu and if it was too early to order from it and the waitress was extremely accommodating. My wife and I had the Filet with gratin potatoes and our friend had the Ribeye. The steaks were not only cook to perfection but all had a beautiful crust on them. We all three have eaten at very high end restaurants and steak houses before and these were the absolute best steaks we have ever had! I highly recommend visiting The Chop House if you are anywhere even close to Hico Texas but no matter how far away you are it is definitely worth the drive! read more

The staff was wonderful, great ambiance and quick with every order. We had Pimento cheese balls with kale and the brisket queso for appetizer, both were amazing! We fell in love with the chophouse on our first visit and have been back a few times since. The food and service never disappoint. 1. Turkey necks and collard greens. I never would have ordered it, but my husband did and insisted I try it. Amazing. 2. The chili is perfection 3. The wine selection is great, they even have our favorite from a small Napa winery rarely seen in restaurants. 4. The bartenders know their stuff. The cocktails are always on point. I only wish they had blue cheese stuffed olives for my martinis. 5. Speaking of cocktails. Don't leave without trying the espresso martini. It's the best I've ever had. 6. We pass through Hico often. If we are hungry we usually grab something at Sonic, because that is all I thought was available. We were pleasantly surprised to find The Chop House at the Midland Hotel on Pecan Street. This place is a gem. Excellent food. Charming atmosphere. When we had lunch I accidentally left my credit card, which I did not discover until I arrived in Dallas. My husband called the restaurant and they had found it and put it in a safe place until we passed by on or way home. How often does that happen? The people were delightful and I am So impressed with their attention to detail in their work and their honesty. We will plan on lunch at The Chop House each time we pass through Hico! My wife and I stopped in HIco to enjoy a meal this evening and the reviews for The Chop House attracted us there to try. The historic hotel where the restaurant is located has a definite "old west" charm as does this whole little Texas town. Our server was quite attentive and our glasses were never empty. I wish that I could report that the food lived up to the ambiance and the service. We had the charcuterie tray, pork ribs on a bed of cole slaw made with bleu cheese and chipotle. We also shared some smoked meatballs with Parmesan cheese for an appetizer. All the food tasted like it was heavily basted or pickled with a smokey, tart barbecue sauce. The service was undeniably one of the best I've ever experienced. Louann was our server and she was so wonderful. We had the braised turkey necks and fried chicken. Everything was exceptional except the greens were inedible because the were drenched in vinegar. The venue was very beautiful! We were impressed by most everything!
