So my experience began as group of motorcycle riders with the plan to meet up in Hico. My group drove 1.5 hours so we were hungry. From the outside the place looked promising. When you walk in there is a Cowboy statue that says "please wait to be seated". So you stand there until a waitress tells you to "seat yourself"? I would estimate the busy meter (made that up) to be a 4 out of 10. This was a Saturday afternoon around 2 pm. We sat down and were brought menus, chips and salsa. After about 15 minutes I had to get up and ask someone if we could order. Then we waited another 5 to order. We ordered simple items such as a burger, cheese enchiladas and beef fajita plate. While waiting I ordered the queso which was very good, although not very warm. The chips tasted a day old. It was sad we had to eat good queso with stale chips. The food took exactly 45 minutes to arrive. My burger was I'd say ok. The fries were tasty and it was all hot. My friend compared her enchiladas to that of a frozen Patio brand TV dinner. Before leaving we all took a trip to our respective restrooms. On the door of the woman's restroom was a sign that read "Absolutely NO men in the woman's restroom". Inside the men's restroom was disgusting. I am not making this up when I say there is another sign next to the toilet that reads exactly" if the toilet over flows please turn this knob then notify staff"!!!!! What business writes that? How about I don't know spending some of the money you make to I dunno fix stuff and hire employees to wait on customers. Overall if you are in Hico and want Tex-Mex hit up a Valero cause my guess is the bathrooms are better and the frozen burrito will fill you up until you get to another restaurant. read more

Had lunch with friends here yesterday and loved it. Service was quick, friendly and helpful. I loved their style of layered dip in a large tortilla taco shell. Husband thoroughly enjoyed his carne asada that was loaded with veggies. Friends had Messy Nachos and a combo enchilada plate that they said was delish. NOT "bad" but NOT "good" ... The atmosphere was "commercial" & lacked a comfortable feeling, and mot in the "spirit" of a city so attached to it's past. Of course, it is the only place in Hico to serve liquor-by-the-glass so they do not need to be good, just open. Waited another 45 min without our order being taken before I asked and they took it. 3/4ths of the table ordered soup, after 30 min still no food. Very rustic looking restaurant when you walk in. I was there a bit early for dinner (about 530) and had to track someone down to get seated. Although I could have sat anywhere since the place was empty. There is a general seating area as you walk in (non-smoking) and then the bar also has seating, I assume that is smoking. Service was friendly and just fast enough so that I didn't feel rushed. I ordered the bean and cheese nachos which were good, but nothing to rave about. Then the cheese enchilada dinner -- again acceptable, but nothing to rave about. I'm not sure a place called Jersey Lilly's should be serving Mexican food --- there were other items on the menu, but they did seem to specialize in Mexican food. Horrible! I've driven past this place many times on route to the hill country and I've been wanting to try it and so glad I did so I won't ever go there again. Let's start with the terrible service. We walked in and stood and the entrance waiting to be seating, as the signs said, for about five minutes before I finally started walking toward the kitchen where a stupid girl finally noticed me and asked, " how many?", I said just two and she replied, "sit wherever you want" and she walked off leaving me to return to the "hostess counter" to get some menus. After finding a table we were instantly greeted with chips and salsa and a drink order but that was the last we'd see of anyone for a long, long time. I had to walk to the kitchen and ask how I could order food, the same stupid girl looked at me and said she would ask a waitress to come to our table to which I replied, "great, I'd love to meet her." The waitress never showed up instead we got a busboy who took our order and never returned to refill drinks or chips and salsa...we finished our drinks and chips and salsa because we waited so long. Then the food finally arrived, the "cook" got our order wrong and the food sucked. I feel sorry for the poor people of Hico if this is their only option for Mexican food. The owner should fire the staff, shoot the cook then commit suicide for the disservice he or she has given to the community. I hear the Chop House is good so please go there instead and don't waste your time or just pick up some jerky and wait till you get home. This place sucks! read more

Stopped in on our family road trip and the food was great. Large portions though so in hind sight we should have split a couple of entrees. I had the Mexican combo and everything on the plate was delicious. My husband had the blt sandwich which he also enjoyed. Our kids were pleased with their meals too. One of the filthiest places Ive ever eaten. They were busy. No doubt. But not too busy to fully clean a table or sweep(not just SCRAPS off the floor, but entire freaking meals). After watching some of the "locals" eat and seeing the carnage left behind, we decided this was, in equal parts, restaurant AND thecustomers. Disgusting. Pictures attached. The best Mexican food I have found while my travels through Texas, and I have been to about 20 different towns and cities. You can tell that they take pride in their food, and its fresh. When ever I go to a new Mexican restaurant I always get the staples, I get a taco and the enchiladas, if you can't get those right, then you shouldn't be in business. My favorite part though was the guacamole, VERY flavorful and it just elevated the meal. I would definitely recommend this place, because you can tell that it is authentic, and not just thrown together. read more

I ordered the combo plate with a cheese enchilada with ranchero sauce it was definitely made fresh and the crispy taco was sitting on a bed of rice to avoid a soggy shell! Brilliant! I live in Austin and have lots of amazing Mexican food to choose from and I would put this one in my top 5 for sure! My kids both loved it as well. The chip and hot sauce were fantastic too. When the chicken fried steak came out, I was pleasantly surprised. This *looked* like what a really good CFS should look like. The meat itself was exactly right. But CFS gets it's flavor only partially from the meat. The breading and the gravy provide 70% of that flavor, and it's here that it was lacking. The breading had very little flavor, and the milk gravy had none at all. I had to make generous use of the cute, but not very functional beer-bottle salt & pepper shakers just to give the meat any flavor at all. Come on, guys, you're so close... add some seasonings to the breading, and by all means, switch to a sausage gravy. The price was not out of line for a good chicken fried steak. Unfortunately, it just wasn't a good chicken fried steak. And get your guest-wifi working, or unplug the router. But stop broadcasting a guest-wifi ID with no Internet service attached. read more
