Walking into Don Nico's Mexican Restaurant was like entering a fun family home. It was warm and inviting with music playing subtly in the background. I was promptly greeted by the hostess and, upon being seated, the friendly waitress. The waitress was great the entire time! Attentive, helpful, and quick with her service. I ordered the enchilada dinner with 2 cheese & onion enchiladas - one with verde sauce and the other with the sour cream sauce. This came with beans and rice. While the plate was hot, the green enchilada was cold - both the sauce and the unmelted, grated cheese. I probably should have asked to have it heated; but I was so hungry that I just ate it. The flavor of the green sauce was spectacular with just the right amount of spice -- and when it started to have a bit too much of a kick I simply took a bite of the sour cream sauce enchilada. Today I ordered a trio of enchiladas serve with Mexican potatoes, grilled and salsa with onions and bell peppe; the service, the atmosphere, the quality of the food, the convenience of parking, and nice, soft background music (all in Spanish) combine to give the patron an excellent dining experience! Let me say the chips were excellent. This must of led to high expectations because the rest of the meal fell far short. We decided to try Don Nico's due to the 4.2 Star Yelp rating but reluctantly I must share my experience to the people like me that count on these Yelp reviews. The chicken fajita was like cheap processed chicken you get in the frozen section. The shrimp not much better and my friend's enchilada and beef taco was also not close to a 4 or 5 star. I won't detail our disappointed meal conversation comments but on a positive note, I did think the beans and rice were good. The service was fine and restaurant feel looked like an authentic Mexican atmosphere, yet for me, did not hit the spot. Maybe we should have had a margarita first. read more

My husband and I read the reviews on Yelp and decided to stop by for lunch today and Carima our waitress recommended the combo enchiladas, Which comes with a chicken enchilada, a beef, enchilada and a cheese, enchilada with onions and roasted potatoes. My husband had the Don Nico combo. Let me tell you we were not disappointed. We also asked for a single tamale so we could try it because they say they're homemade they have to be the best tamales so if I need tamales I know where I'm going . First, couldn't sample menudo before purchasing which every other restaurant we've been able to see if it was good beforehand. second there was a bug on my plate of street tacos and a big wad of fat in it. We were passing through, so we decided to try this place. The restaurant was clean, and the waitress was very friendly and helpful. She suggested that we try this huge combination fajita burrito. So my 11-year-old son and I split it. Im a big guy, and there was plenty of food for both of us! Everything we ate here was very good. The chips were fresh and crispy with a great salsa. The guacamole we got on the side instead of on the burrito, and it had great flavor. And the burrito was well-cooked, and we both enjoyed it. Tax included, our bill was $11.50. We were in Stephenville for a college soccer match. I found Don Nicos on yelp. We went on a Sunday afternoon. They were crowded, but we got seated quickly. The service was excellent and the appetizer (queso dip) was there in just a couple minutes. It and the chips were very tasty. The menu had many different choices. We got the combo #1 and combo #2. The plates arrived sizzling hot. We both loved the cheese and onion enchiladas and the cheese taco. The guac was also really good. The prices were reasonable. Recently had a family celebration here after college graduation. They were very accommodating to our group. Great chips & salsa, food was good. We had a wonderful server. Queso is just a generic cheese sauce, and the salsa was not made on site (my guess is that San Antoinio stuff from a jar) to me if they cut corners on the first impression I don't know what to expect for the meal. Overall the food tasted like it came from a freezer. I will not go back. read more

Surprise, surprise, surprise......I finally found a good restaurant in this town. I ordered what I always get when I try out a new mexican restaurant. I got the combination plate of enchiladas and a taco. But this plate didn't come with rice and beans, it came with mexican potatoes, and let me tell you, the potatoes were soft, yet firm and very flavorful! The rest of the food was good as well, nice moist chicken in the enchilada, and the ground beef was very tasty as well. Brittany was our waitress and she was very nice and very attentive. I was there again last night and had tried out the Tamales, and they were homemade and tasted very good, I just didn't like the chili sauce that came on the enchiladas or tamale. The guacamole you can tell is made fresh, but the quest is a bit lacking. read more
