This woman has rightfully earned the title of reining champ of fresh seafood purveyors. The relationships she maintains with local fishermen and women is evident in the quality of her selection. We were staying in South Thomaston for a month and the owner of the VRBO highly recommended her. We stopped by on several occasions and picked up mussels, clams, and halibut (got lobster straight from the dock and oysters from local oyster farmers). The halibut was so supreme that we ordered 50lbs to take home. She had them flash frozen and we are now completely ruined as far as fresh halibut is concerned :) Great selection of wines and local ciders. The only drawback: the parking lot is bitch to get in and out of (tiny). Stayed in Maine for three months, all over the state. Most restaurants were an epic disappointment.. yes you're cooking it yourself and your wallet will know you were there, but this was worth the effort and every cent! read more

Great fish market that has all the good stuff . Stopped by yesterday and picked up a couple of lbs of halibut . Excellent fish , very fresh . They also have often hard to find halibut cheeks . These are harder to get than chicken lips . Good fish , good prices , friendly staff. read more

While staying in Rockland Maine, several people told us that Jess's Market was the best place to get live lobster. It was a great little shop with so much to offer...wine, beer, snacks, seasoning, and of course so much amazing and fresh seafood. The folks there were super helpful and pointed us towards some great suggestions. We found two great lobsters and took them back to our Airbnb. My husband stuffed them and they were fabulous. We love lobster and get it from time to time in Texas, but now we know what super-fresh off-the-boat lobster tastes like. In other words, we are ruined. read more

Just indulged in a lunch of Jess' beautiful, bar Harbor mussels. They were plump and mild and so fresh. How delicious! Garlic, Minced celery, some slivered onion, thyme and savory, salt, a pinch of red pepper flakes and plenty of white wine and lots of chopped parsley. Served with toast points. As an update I had the chance to get Lobster again from Jess's again and true-to-form it was packed flawlessly and the Lobster was perfect. We rented an Airbnb in the area and found Jess's as a place to get lobster steamed so we could bring it back and eat at the house. We really liked the market. Lots of good wines and interesting products. Friendly staff. Loved watching the interactions with locals. If I lived nearby I'd be there all the time. It's simply the best seafood store in Maine. The selection is vast and also fresh. It has Atlantic halibut in season and when the word gets out that the bluefin tuna is running, Jess's is first in line. Need oysters? They always have Pemaquids and the local Weskeags. They have genuine calamari, the kind you would find in a market in Italy. There are crab and crab legs and several tanks of live lobsters. While Jess's is not a full-service food market you can always get an avocado, or strawberries in season or local potatoes. How about chanterelles? Do you like them? Jess's often has them in summer fresh from the forest. Did I fail to mention a nice selection of wines and beers? Well, they got some of those as well along with some specialty items in cans and jars. The staff is friendly and efficient and always willing to offer suggestions about how to prepare their world-class seafood. The recent highway work on South Main Street has made the road to Jess's an obstacle course but it's well worth the slight inconvenience. read more

Don't know what all the high ratings are for. Went here looking for fresh seafood. I should have known by the bad fish smell when I walked in that things were not going to be good. I've lived in the Seaport in Boston for a long time and I know what a good fish market is supposed to smell like. I expect it to smell fishy, but not bad fishy. Maybe its just because of the time of year? After labor day on the coast of Maine all the tourists depart. Maybe thats why the seafood was not the freshest because only the locals are left to buy it, but when that time of year comes, you have to rotate out the bad stock instead of holding onto it past its prime. Anyways, I bought some scallops, shrimp & squid. The scallops were OK, the shrimp was well past its prime and the squid was borderline. I'm glad I cooked it all up in a Fra Diavilo that evening because if I had waited one day with it in the fridge I would have had to throw it all out. They did have some nice specialty items there and the girls that worked there were very friendly. read more

Great place to pickup local seafood. This was recommended by the owners of the cottage that we were renting as a place to get local caught live lobsters and other seafood. The staff was friendly in helping pick out your order. If you're not up to cooking your lobster they'll cook if for you to take home. Prices were reasonable. Definitely a 5 out of 5. read more

The employees were more than helpful, and we spent less than $110 to receive a dozen lobsters, and they packed them so we could travel about a half hour by car to where we were cooking. Jess's is a wonderful place. I am from San Diego, and my girlfriend is from Florida and we know seafood, and this place is top notch. I recommend this place, and I didn't even look at their giant selection of craft and local Maine beer, plus some awesome bottles of wine. The seafood is what nailed it for me, however, Andrea loved the scallops the most! Not to mention their lobster tank was amazing, and the lobsters inside of it even more incredible. You can buy any size lobster you have a fixing for and you can even pick them out as they are right in the middle of the store grouped by various sizes in tanks with prices listed. Excellent wine selection as well as beer. They have all variety of mollusks and bi-valves from which to choose; depending on the season they may have multiple local varieties of oysters, clams, mussels, crab, crab legs or claws, fresh tuna, salmon or swordfish. Also their scallops are delicious - you should try one raw, they're unexpectedly good this way. Jess's various groceries, home made pastas and other hard to find condiments and sauces. We shopped twice at Jess's for a total of 3 meals. This is an excellent place to buy seafood - not cheap but excellent. The oysters were outstanding, the clamsand scallops very fresh. The swordfish and haddock were also excellent. The service was very friendly and helpful in selecting our purchases. We cooked the swordfish on the weber, and it came out great - had that melting in the mouth experience of very fresh swordish. Only issue was a darn seagull swooped down and stole a piece off the grill when we weren't looking!! read more

Excellent fresh seafood market just outside downtown Rockland on the way to Owls Head. Jess's always seems to have a variety of fresh fish and shellfish on hand. One of best seafood stores I have ever visited. I visit once a week since moving up here to ME about 9 months ago, and this market far and away exceeds all other seafood competition within 20 mile radius. Good example of why: visited recently looking for a pound of cod. Didn't see it, so asked and they said, "oh it's not cut yet, just wait a few min, we'll get it to you" Then sure enough I can see the fishmonger bringing the entire whole cod fish and cutting me a filet. I probably don't even need to add how fresh and tasty it was. Add in a great selection of beers and wines, and this place rocks for anyone looking for seafood. read more
