I was so excited to try this place because the food looked so good in the photos! We ordered fajitas with no beans and nachos with no veggies. After receiving the order, I could see they acknowledged the request for no beans/vegetable on the ticket printed but after opening the boxes, there were beans and vegetables. My husband was still able to eat his fajitas, throwing out anything the beans spilled on but i was unable to eat the nachos seeing as there was corn, peppers, and what looked like beans at the bottom. We live in Portsmouth and wanted to try something new but i guess this wasn't the right choice. So disappointing because we thought we may had found a new mexican spot. read more

OK so I've been hearing about this place and against my better judgement I decided to try. First things first. I always check.in to restaurants via Yelp! Well this time when I checked in it was an offer for a free elite. I placed my order for two carnita tacos and a chicken and cheese quesadilla. My order was to go. When I showed the two staff personnel the offer for the free elite that looked at me as if I had two heads and immediately said no! I was like wow! Your business offered this at check-in. Anywho, I get my food home and the carnita taco yeah let's just say bland city. My daughter is who I ordered the quesadilla for. She came out of the kitchen immediately and stated you didn't go to El Ray's did you? I said nope! She said never go back to wherever this was there was no flavor. While in Ocean View, my daughter had heard of a restaurant called Jessy's. We walked into the restaurant to the most wonderful aroma. Jessy's is not only a restaurant, but on one side of the building is a store/bakery. As I am attracted to bakeries, I was ecstatic! My daughter had the fish taco meal, and selected the chicken taco meal. We were very pleased with our meals. Was a little disappointed that chips and salsa was not offered as part of our meals. I had 2 visits recently - both for holiday gatherings with large parties. On both occasions, we enjoyed the private loft space. I was excited to try this Jessy's as I love the hole-in-the-wall VB Blvd location near Oceana. Jessy's Taco Bistro is conveniently located in the heart of Ghent. While I no longer reside in the area, I still love it. I can park, have a bite, see the sights and do some shopping. There is ample parking in a side private lot or along one of the many side streets. The restaurant has a patio entrance and main entrance facing 20th street. Upon entry on both occasions, I was nearly blown out the door by the music. It was LOUD. It was not much quieter upstairs, and I struggled to hear conversation, which was disappointing. Throughout our lengthy visits, service was attentive considering the number of guests. I was a bit bothered that every time they brought another drink, it was so full I ended up with spills on my clothing as the drink was passed over the tables and puddles left on the tabletops. It was very evident that this was happening, but no apologies or offers of extra napkins were ever presented. The food was just meh. I ordered street-style tacos with chicken and rice and Pollo a la Plancha. The chicken was tender, but something was missing in the flavor profile that I get at Jessy's Taqueria. Many friends had the same notion - it was just ok. The rice had good flavor, but was very dry. I did enjoy their guacamole. I'd not go out of my way to return to this Jessy's. Given the atmosphere, quality and price, it just isn't worth it for me. read more

Maybe I'll have to try the burrito or empanadas here? I wasn't too hungry, so I ordered ceviche, but it wasn't enough for an appetizer or a meal, and it was pretty pricy. There is a lot of variety on the menu, but maybe it would be better for them to narrow down or focus on specific types of food because I know they have potential. I tried the Jessy's at Ocean View, and I highly recommend going there instead of here. I've had the birria tacos, and it was pretty decent, which is why I'm giving this place 3 stars. If you get tacos or probably another entree, the portions are pretty big that you'd have to come hungry or save the other half of the meal later. For parking, they have their own parking space next to the restaurant, so it's pretty easy access. read more

This place is located in a cute mall area, the place itself is very well decorated and worth coming here to celebrate a special day. The food took almost an hour to come out, but we ordered appetizers and drinks and those came quickly. Once the food came it was so delicious and it tasted very fresh. I'm not sure how authentic the Mexican food is here, but it's delicious nonetheless. The churros are so good too!! read more

Checked out this taco spot the other night for the first time. I arrived super close to closing time (on accident) however when I came in I was still greeted and taken care of. A young lady by the name of Sierra was very nice and kind! I placed my order to go with her and waited in the inside for my meal to finish. I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaraunt! Super cute and cozy in the inside! I think this would be a cute date night spot or even just go to with friends! My food was ready in 10 minutes - I ordered 2 shredded beef tacos and 2 pork marinated tacos. It was reaallyy good! Also, if you check in on yelp here you will receive a ticket for a free mexican corn! I decided to save mines for later. I plan on coming back here with my bestfriend to eat in the inside - I will use my ticket then. The prices were very affordable for good food. My order came up to $20 for 4 the 4 tacos that I ordered. Can't wait to visit back and enjoy the full experience by eating in the inside. read more

I'm not sure, but I used to come to Jesse's all the time I love the drink & food. I love the ambiance, but this visit was so strange and unusual. Soon as we got in there we noticed a good amount of people so we stood around and waited to be seated when no one came. We went to the bar we were probably sitting down for no more than 10 minutes. This one guy kept coming up to us asking me was I ready to order food? I said no we're drinking.... Me and my friend actually didn't come to eat we came to have a few drinks... We're African American btw JS. As we are sitting down the person who served us left from behind the counter there's another person behind the counter, but none of them speak English. Again the guy comes up to me again and say "so you'll aren't ordering anything? I'm like no we're drinking. He said oh okay and walked away. I felt so targeted like why do you keep asking me Am I going to order???? so to push things forward I ordered some food. I ordered a birria burrito with an extra side of rice. The rice was undone. The birria burrito wasn't folded or closed on the ends. It was very soggy. The meat was tough. The Cosme was flavorless. I'll never come back to this place again and this used to be one of my favorite local spots... PS I forgot to mention that my drinks were super watered down. I had to give my drink back twice because it looked like something was in my cup. There was literally something floating and you can see it sticking to the sides of the glass. Had dinner here with several friends; we had been before and enjoyed the casual atmosphere and the food was good. But tonight we had the worse service ever. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated. It was another 15 minutes before a server showed up. We ordered drinks and asked for chips. Eventually drinks showed up, but no chips. Finally chips and salsa arrived, but no one came to take our food order. We sought out someone that worked there and asked about ordering. Some minutes later a different server came to take our orders. As we waited, other patrons were in and out of the restuarant and we still had no food. We finally found out that our server had not put in our order. No apologies. As the restaurant was clearing out we finally got our food. Of course, after eating no one came around with the check and we finally went to the bar and asked for our bill. It was a nightmare, but actually the worst of it was that no one said they were sorry or asked if there was anything they could do to make it right. A total disaster. Hands down the food was AMAZING and had the service been, well, just GOOD, I would have given it 5 stars. We happened to sit in a section with a new server (which we get), but there was no one helping him. He was super nice, but the service was the slowest I have experienced in a VERY LONG time. It took 25 mins to get our drinks (a draft beer & simple margarita on the rocks & waters at the same time) and the place wasn't very busy. We are super patient and know how hard being a server is, but not keep us updated and just staring off looking for someone to bring water for the first 25 mins was incredibly annoying. We were just glad it was a date night and that we didn't have our kiddos along for the ride. We will definitely be back and hoping for more responsive servers! read more

I enjoyed my late lunch here. I've went to their original location in Ocean View many times but don't know why I never had the desire to try this place out. The space has high ceilings with an eclectic decor. The table I was sitting wasn't balanced so it kept rocking back and forth. That was a little annoying, but from what I've read in other reviews the seats and stuff are from the previous restaurant. For my meal, I ordered the shrimp with rice and added onions and green peppers. It really took the meal up a notch. The rice is flavorful and the shrimps were good sizes too. I asked for the queso cheese on the side so I can add as much or littleas I wanted. They were accommodating to my meal and I appreciated that. My hubs got the fajita and he enjoyed it very much. It wasn't too salty or greasy as we have found at other Mexican restaurants. Now the Verde salsa!! That was sooo good! Very fresh and with the right type of heat. That was a winner! The tortilla chips that comes with the salsa is a little different than what you'll expect. It was a little harder, it does look like homemade chips but I wish it was more on the thinner side. The food seems to be very authentic and homemade down to the tortillas for the tacos/fajitas. I will be sure to come back and try some more dishes! read more

A friend and I tried this place for the first time today. We were promptly greeted by David, who was very friendly, went over the menu with us since it was the first time and took our order. We got the appetizer with the chips and all the dipping options. The chips are some of the best I've ever had and the queso was incredible. We both got the trio, which consisted of a taco, sope, and corn quesadilla, with an option for beans or rice for a side. The food was very flavorful and there was a lot of it. David told us about upcoming events and specials, making me really want to go back and try some of other menu items. I wanted some Mexican food and knew Ghent usually had something good. I don't always like to go to this area because I hate to find street parking BUT there is a parking lot!!!! Great lil place with very casual ambience. There were a few televisions that had some sports on, but I would not consider this a sports bar. There's an outside area that I'm sure would be nice in the summer. I was super excited to see birria tacos on the menu so that's exactly what I ordered. It came with 3 tacos and yes they were very flavorful. They were full of meat and very filling. I had some elote on the side which was also good. The red sangria I ordered was ok. Not the best ever but still good. I'd order it again. Our service was good. They were not super friendly but they were attentive, so that's enough for me. Someone came to take drink orders as soon as we sat down and the food came out really quick. So I'm not a person to really look at prices but I will say I was a bit surprised at the bill. It was a little costly. I'm also aware that everything is more expensive these days but just want y'all to be prepared and look at the prices. Overall, good experience. Wow! My husband and I stopped in here for an outdoor lunch with our four month old on an unusually warm February day after a trip to the zoo yesterday. We were so impressed with the food and service! There is a decent sized parking lot next to the restaurant. We were seated right away on the patio as requested. They have lights strung up which would probably be lovely for an evening date. The tables were all shaded with large umbrellas. Our server brought waters and took our orders quickly, which was helpful as the baby doesn't always last long on these outings. She also brought the check with our meal as we asked for and was prompt and kind throughout our lunch. We started with chips and guacamole. It seemed a bit pricey but we could understand why when we received our hot, crispy chips and a large serving of freshly prepared guacamole. There was more than enough for the two of us to share and a side of well seasoned salsa. My husband ordered the lunch birria tacos with rice and I ordered the lunch asada tacos with rice (you can choose rice or beans). Our tacos came in perfectly charred homemade corn tortillas- the best I have ever had! The fillings were nicely seasoned. My husband's tacos had a bit more fat in the meat than he would have preferred but were otherwise very good. We really enjoyed our whole experience at Jessy's Taco Bistro and will definitely return! read more

I finally had the chance to sit down and eat the food here and I don't know what it was but when I first tried the food I was just so happy. It was an odd but very satisfying experience. Does that sound silly? It feels silly! But my stomach felt SO HAPPY with how good the food was that I was just dancing in my seat the whole time - well that was also in part to the bomb playlist that was playing in the background but still. So I knew that I had to have the elote here, since the last time that I tried it was so long ago that I don't remember when. It was still as amazing as I remember and I'm so glad that I know where to go to get some. Then I decided to try the tacos since I had been craving some. I went with four tacos - the chorizo and then the lamb. OH MY GOSH THE LAMB TACO WAS FREAKING AMAZING. The meat was so juicy and seasoned perfectly my gosh. I think that's what made me so happy. O M G. stop what you're doing and run to jessy's for their birria tacos. My fiance and I stopped by last night for his birthday treat. He was in the mood for birria tacos and mole enchiladas. LET ME TELL YOU! we've tried birria tacos from several local restaurants, and this has got to be our favorite. First of all, the service was great! Even with a packed restaurant! There were 3 servers maintaining each table in such a systemic, yet personable way. The ambiance is cool and eclectic - great for family, friends, grabbing drinks, etc. The FOOD... OMG. those birria tacos were legit. The broth was great, the cilantro, onions, and lime just make it taste so fresh. I love the original Jessy's Taco Bistro and happy to see that they are expanding. This location is very nice and always have a easy time parking (I also typically visit early in the afternoon or evening). Today I ordered their chilaquiles, which is honestly kind of hard to find in Hampton Roads Area. I got the chilaquiles with the green sauce which was very good, not spicy. They give you red and green spicy sauce on the side so you can control the heat level, I really like that option. The egg was perfectly cooked, beans were good and chips also good flavor/texture. I think they could elevate this dish by adding avocado, adding more onions, cilantro and more Cotija cheese. Maybe even some fresh sliced radish on the side (just my advice). It was still great as it was prepared. My husband ordered the Choripollo, which was grilled Chicken with chorizo covered in cheese, served with rice, beans and homemade tortillas. This was his first time ordering the dish and he really enjoyed it. Highly recommend giving the Choripollo dish a try. We dined outside today, it was a beautiful day and not crowded. Service was fast, severs were very kind and quickly refilled our drinks. If you're feeling Mexican-influenced food (because this chain is certainly not Mexican-authentic), Jessy's is about as good as it gets in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. I'd give the finger foods (like the tacos, endless chips and drinks, and other appetizer) a solid 5 stars but any real entrees always leave me expecting more or just expecting better. Pricing is pretty decent for quantity/quality of food and the atmosphere is always warm and welcoming. However, table service is slow no matter how slow or busy the restaurant is so if you want to be served quickly and can accommodate it, I try sitting at the bar every time I go. Definitely take advantage of the happy hour specials if you're around for them! read more

Not sure why the ratings aren't better here.. my husband and I came here from California. I lived there almost my entire life. It's hard to find good Mexican food here.. very hard. I spent the last eight months looking to no avail. Then I heard about Jessy's! I took my friend here for her 21st!! I couldn't drink since I was the DD. I went here a few days later with my husband. Their drinks are Bomb!!! We got there for happy hour and I got a double frozen margarita. It was amazing. I believe I got the passion fruit?? Recommended by the waiter. So yummy! I was in heaven. They're pretty strong! I had their tacos both times and also had a tamale this last time. The salsas are both fantastic. Authentic and fresh. So this is for takeout. I ordered a California Burrito that came soggy with no filling and barely larger than my fist. They usually come sliced stuffed with fresh ingredients, this one came wet largely with melted cheese and a small scoop of meat w/o any vegetables inside. There was almost no filling. If you were expecting a decent to sub-par burrito for $14-15, that's what this costs but it was below sub-par. I would go to Pelon's Baja Grill or California Burrito for takeout moving forward. Even Qdoba what be better than what I was just given. It's almost as if they ran out of ingredients, rolled up a tortilla and covered it with salsa to make up for it. Additionally it came with perhafries as the side. I would just advise never ordering takeout from Jessy's as it is clearly an afterthought and horrible representation of the good food the serve dining-in. What would I suggest for the discerning dinner the flank steak taco amazing grill flavor, the pork taco great beef taco was good but I could do without the pineapple (not bad actually it's just unique in a good way). A few coworkers and I paid a visit today for lunch and it was pretty good. Not sure if we were too early but there were only 6 customers total including us four. No complaints regarding the food or service from any of us. I had the California burrito, which was pretty good. And pretty close to the mission style burrito found in SoCal. They offered both a green and red sauce to go with the burrito which were pretty tasty. My only advice since everything else was great, make homemade soft flour tortillas in house. (that's refried folks), and I mean cmon.. you can't mess that up. So it wasn't half bad for a staple side. I don't care much for salad with Mexican food, but it was sub par. Certainly not crisp, and a bit old, but hey - if you go to a Mexican joint for salad, it's safe to say you've been making lackluster decisions for at least three weeks. Anyway I'll cut to the chase. If presentation is a primary concern of yours, your parade is about to be rained on. But if you're just looking for your gut to be busted, you found the right place. Give 'em a try. Plenty of parking on-street and in a shared lot for today's lunch date with my wife. First time here for both of us. Unlike Jessy's in Oceanview, the restaurant is roomy and clean with a mix of chic decor on exposed brick playing hip, upbeat music. After 1p in cold rainy weather made for an empty dining room. Lunch menu was simplistic with items unseen at most area Mexican spots: esquites, elote, tamal, choribean. More unique and familiar items are on the Dinner menu which can be ordered anytime. Our server Flor was delightful, informative and attentive. We stared with chips, salsa and guacamole followed by flour tortillas Antojitos (1 pork, 1 Steak, 1 shredded chicken, 1 grilled chicken) along with sides of black beans and esquites (sautéed corn with queso, avocado and chili lime aioli). Though we ate them all, we didn't care for the chips as the thick texture resembled baked pita chips; it actual brought some discomfort to my gums near my lower rear molar. Still, everything arrived quickly, fresh made and seasoned with precision; I found the shredded chicken very flavorful, a notch above the grilled. My wife LOVED the pork, even above the steak. I'm not usually a fan of raw onions but it provided an unconventional dressing to the tacos, along with radish and cilantro. Mmmmm, cilantro!Guacamole was very good. Esquites was an unexpected HIT; fresh corn with queso and a hint of heat is yummy...seems like a no brainer now! To top off my lunch date at a new spot, Yelp Restaurant Week granted 30% off the total bill. This made a good meal a very good deal! Just check-in to unlock. !!!WARNING!!! This was the worst dining experience ever. The waitress was very nice, but the food not so much. My friend ordered the taco salad and when it was brought out it had sour cream. He informed the waitress that he did not want sour cream. She offered to take the order back to give him a salad without sour cream. To our surprise all they did was wipe the sour cream off. GROSS. I could not believe they just wiped off the sour cream. Disgusting! What did you wipe that off with ma'am??? Health inspection violation much??? This was my first time here we always pass the place but finally came in on a Saturday for some lunch & margarita's . It wasn't busy at all so we seated w/o issue & were greeted the menu has ALOT of options and the price I would say is between $16-20+ per meal depending what you get . I got the sangria margarita frozen and the Jessy's Fajiatas we shared the meal between us too & it was more than enough and still had some to take w us . The food was SO GOOD, my favorite part was the Green Salsa they brought to the table it just elevated my food so well . They also give you a red salsa too and it also really food if you mix the two . Lets get back to the birria, shall we..... The food arrived still warm.....kudos to Uber eats for that. I had the 3 birria tacos with consommé. The whole consommé thing threw me off prior to trying these tacos because, well, consommé is a French word so why do they call it this ‍. Reminds me of my issue with the naming of PF Chang's Chinese 'Bistro'. Bistro is a French word......meh Again, back to the birria...... The tacos were amazing. The tortillas had a nice sear to give the exterior just enough crunch. The meat was delicious and tender and dipping each bite into the consommé was the icing on the cake. Well, the only thing that made that icing better was sprinkling some onion and cilantro all over that bad boy before the next dip.
