We started with chips and salsa and the quest fundito. Both were so delicious! The salsa was a perfect spice level (I'm a little spice shy; for the folks who like the heat, the additional salsas presented with our tacos had spicier options!). I've been here a few times recently. The first was when a friend won a drawing for a free taco happy hour event. He had dropped his business card in a fishbowl at the entry host station to enter the drawing. I'm not sure of all the details but 6 of us had 3 tacos. We enjoyed our bar beverages too. My next visit to bring a new employee for lunch. Our server was pleasant and attentive. We enjoyed our tacos and guac. We sampled the 3 house made salsas offered. My 3rd visit was for a late lunch with a coworker. We were promptly seated at a table for 4 even though it was the two of us which was appreciated since the 2 tops are a little small. We again enjoyed our tacos and guac. I had cauliflower rice as a side. All the tacos were full of yummy goodness. They also had a taco Tuesday special available. I made sure to drop my business card in the fishbowl. I noticed they had a place you could drop off letters to Santa outside which was nice for the holidays. We had dinner tonight at Union Taco located on 25th Street in the heart of Norfolk's warehouse district. I started coming here after reading a great Yelp Review and I've been hooked since then. All of the drinks are made with fresh squeezed juice and the bartenders have some excellent craft cocktails that were created on site. That how you know when you've found a place that is special, you can get drinks here that nobody else is serving. Now onto the food, I absolutely adore the Birria Tacos. If you've never had them, you are really missing out. The beef is slow cooked for several hours to allow all of the ingredients to marry and the result is a wonderful beef taco that is tender and delicious. They put the meat into a corn tortilla and then dip it in the juice of the beef. Then they add the cheese and grill it to a golden brown. This is my REGULAR GO-TO taco place in Ghent. I come here every time I come back from a business trip and a welcome home treat to myself. I always order 3 to 4 tacos everytime I am here and their homemade salsa is INCREDIBLY GOOD. Warning though, it does have a little kick to it. I think 4 tacos is the right amount to get full. If you want to try the dessert though, I recommend getting three. You can get it on either a corn or flour tortilla (I always go with corn because they give you two of it). The service is always great there, and everyone is so friendly. It's not just the food that is great here, but the cocktails are very good too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Strawberry Basil Margarita. They have a mini parking lot next to the restaurant, but most people just park on the same street or across the street. This place was DELICIOUS. Came here on a whim with a friend for a quick lunch and it was exactly what we needed. I currently live in Texas so I've had a lot of good tacos - but no seafood tacos like this down there! I got a Tako taco and the Seared Ahi. The Tako had a little bit of a kick with the spicy sauce they used but I still thought it was delicious. The Seared Ahi was really refreshing and tasty as well. I live near Union Taco, and I'm making an effort to support all the small restaurants around me. Sadly, I didn't love this one. Context: I grew up in the LA area, where tacos are heavenly. I'm also Mexican-American who frequents going back to MX to visit family and eat! FOOD: We ordered the queso fundido to start which was fine but it tasted more like Tex Mex queso than queso fundido, it was too watery to be queso fundido. I had the chicken tinga, baja fish, and coliflor taco. Here's my beef with them, the tortillas that they use are too thin so by the time they get to you, it's all falling apart. Either double it up like most taquerias do or get thicker tortillas. LOCATION: The place is really cool, they have so many alcohol options. Parking is on the street, it could get tricky on the weekends. SERVICE: Friendly service! Pretty quick, too! No complaints here. Will I come back? Staff was kind but very inexperienced. This coming from someone who has been a bartender/server and manager for 9 years. My husband got the chicken sandwich and half of it was burnt breading with one small half piece of a breast. I ordered 3 tacos almost all of them full of salt and missing half of the toppings. I also got a bowl of the chicken tortilla soup which came out ice cold. I very kindly let out server know as we clearly didn't even touch our plates other than our first bites. I can tell Union is a dependable option for many, with good drinks and decent food. We got there during HH so were able to take advantage of a margarita and some queso to start. The queso was yummy and came out lightning fast. My margarita was also a nice size for $5 and very good! I got the tinga taco and the bulgogi taco. Both were just...fair. The tinga had zero salt and all heat, so that was a miss for me. The bulgogi had good flavor, but the texture was wrong. It's not supposed to be that dry. So, another miss for me. I would return for some drinks and apps, but their tacos aren't my favorite. I actually have yet to find an amazing taco place in the tri-city area. DM me if you know a great spot that is authentic! They have awesome happy hour specials that include $2 off appetizers and drink specials too good to pass up. We decided to do something totally different and try some veggie appetizers. I've always wanted to try shisito peppers and I've been seeing them around more often on menus. We ordered that along with the thai curry cauliflower. Beware, their appetizers are HUGE and I'd say they're big enough to feed four people! Each had a very unique taste to it that I can't describe. The crispy cauliflower reminded me of hot chicken wings (random, lol) and the peppers would not have been tolerable for me had it not been for that honey! It is really spicy! I don't think I could eat that again but if you're really into spicy food, this is definitely for you! Aside from the apps, I also ordered the baja fish taco and the bulgogi taco. Both also very flavorful. It it weren't for the free chips and the apps I would've finished them but I found myself struggling! I'd definitely be back for happy hour again! Friend suggestion for happy hour and I can't get over the fact I haven't been here before! Didn't make it for happy hour, but pricing was still good. Low lighting with a beautiful liquor wall plus I love the heated lamp at the entrance. I was able to get street parking nearby, not bad for a Thursday night. For 2, we sat at the bar and were immediately helped. Wish I remembered his name, but the bartender was very sweet and knowledgeable when describing the margaritas to us. Typical of a Mexican restaurant, we had chips and salsa (loved the salsa) until we ordered. The margarita of the day -- peach flavored was delicious. The alcohol was there, but it wasn't aggressive. I ordered 3 tacos at first, but had to order another once I found out how good that fish taco was! I loved we were able to mix and match the tacos to be able to try it all. Tacos were about $3/4-$6 at most I believe. The chicken tinga tacos were good and my friend said she really liked her panko shrimp one. Kitchen closes at 930, so beware! The beer selection is quite stingy in terms of craft beer. They were out of one of the very few (like 2 or 3) craft beers on a recent visit. The bowls like the ahi poke bowl, veggie bowl, Union bowl, etc are generous and pretty good. I would like wasabi with the ahi bowl, the 'wasabi creme' that comes with a few dishes is bland and lacks wasabi flavor. The cocoanut curry mahi entree was the most pricy item on the menu at $28. it was pretty good, a generous serving and tasty. Our friend got the tacos. They were so tiny. Three tacos each was barely two bites. As a place that is NAMED for tacos, it is surprising how tiny they are. The presentation just looks sad. They really need to up their taco game. This place holds a special place in my heart because I tried this place out for the first time with my work bestie [at the time], and we fell in love with the food and drinks. I've since returned with different people and groups. The interior is decorated nicely, flexing their tequila selection. Service is fast and friendly with every visit, so the staff gets an A+++, especially when they're looking out for you trying to get in your last round of drinks before happy hour ends. The cocktails are out of this world, and the smoked pineapple margarita is one of my favorite cocktails I've ever had. Sadly, it isn't offered regularly, but you'll surely find a drink to enjoy on the menu. The food is bit pricey, but what can we do about inflation? (Scream, cry, and continue to push anti-work principles in the work place.) Anyways, order the queso fundido for the table. If it survives apps & drink hour, pour it on your taco or entree. I know you can make it at home, but the house guac served fresh with chips and later for your tacos is almost a requirement to add to the bill. I can proudly say I've tried all the tacos on the regular menu, but I'll make easier by choosing my top 3: chicken tinga for picky eater, seared ahi for the seafood lover, and bulgolgi beef for something fun. If you want to play it safe and simple, the carne asada comes with plenty of meat and flavor. I love this place so much, I will not dock a star for the awful parking situation. We also had the ceviche and that was excellent but the portion size was lacking. For tacos we had the carne asada, beef bugogi, fish, shrimp, ahi tuna, chicken tinga. The beef bugogi n the carne were my favorites but I love steak so. The shrimp was good. Definitely request the hot salsas, (they gave 3 different kinds) as they are delicious and compliment the tacos well. They could use some help with service as the food took a while to come out. What a confusing place this is. I'm not sure what type of vibe they are going for here - is this a family friendly restaurant, is it a bar? Is it a simple taco joint or an upscale Mexican restaurant? None of these questions I can answer. Walking in, they have a great look- cool, open garage door, banquet and table seating. Very nice host. We got the Oaxaca old fashioned - just okay. I went 4 days of their soft opening and I'm loving the industrial vibe of this place. They offer everything from tacos to burritos. The liquor menu is intensive with shots/drinks for like $100! The tacos are reasonably priced of $4 to $5 la carte. This gives you an option to try different tacos with that price point. The first round of chips and dips are on the house. I love the thin crispy white corn tortilla chip. It's light and crisp. The salsa was just ok. It was too tomato-y, almost like a marinara texture and taste like it too. The cheese dip off the appetizer menu was yum. It was topped with chorizo and feta cheese. It comes out on a hot sizzling skillet. I ordered a mahi grilled taco. I had heard that this was a delicious taco spot and decided to try it on a Sunday with a group of friends to take advantage of their all day happy hour. There we're some vegetarian options throughout the menu, so that was a plus. We arrived first in our group, so we ordered the house guacamole and classic margaritas for $5. Our little one got the cheese quesadilla and side salad, which was pretty large but she didn't care much for the dressing. Once our friends arrived, they ordered their drinks, which took forever to come and it wasn't even busy. Eventually we ordered our food, which were the seta asada taco, Baja tofu taco, cauliflower taco, and a classic bean taco. For the price, the portions are small and to get the best price on tacos you have to get three of the same. You can mix and match but they are full price, which is definitely not worth it but we wanted to try more than one flavor. Overall, I don't think we'll be coming back. Taco heaven has been found. Took the queen here for lunch today and am currently in a taco-induced coma on the couch wishing I had a second stomach. We started with the birria nachos - absolutely phenomenal The house-made queso and sweet pickled jalapeños really set the dish apart from the rest of the crowd. Next, we had several tacos - I recommend the Carne Asada and Bulgogi tacos, Finally, we should have stopped with the nachos, but we went full steam ahead with the churro sundae. There is always plenty of bar seating when I've visited on weekdays so it's always quick to pop in and out. Service is always very friendly and typically prompt. I typically come for Happy Hour (which has $5 house margaritas, $2 off beer, and $2 off appetizers). Typically I get a draft beer and just order a couple tacos. A quick and relatively inexpensive dinner. I have tried most of the tacos and usually mix and match a couple (fish and carne asada are my faves!). They always come out quickly and are super tasty. They have a decent variety of beers on tap as well as some bottles/cans. So why 4 stars and not 5? Well, I've found service to be top notch when solo at the bar, but a bit slow the couple times I've come in a group (even when the establishment hasn't been busy). Also, the guacamole is a little bland. A taco spot with bland guac makes me a little sad. But, definitely order the chips and salsa. The chips are tasty and the salsa is fantastic.
